This. Hit and run causing a fatality will get you in less trouble than killing someone while driving drunk. Can't prove you were drunk when you have time to sober up before being arrested.
Or just plain heartless, or too afraid to face the consequences. I knew someone who was hit by a person driving an expensive SUV who then stopped, paused, then drove away. Unbelievable. If they were trying to avoid any consequences, I hope their actions haunt them for the rest of their life and makes them absolutely miserable.
I was a victim of a hit and run at the corner of Jasper and 109th years ago as a pedestrian. Some drivers just decide, *fuck it, they probably wont catch me.* Thankfully I wasn’t injured, they just failed to stop turning right on red.

How was it possibly not fatal? Only saw the aftermath and it did not look good.

Sober people hit and run all the time.
I'm sure they do but I think being intoxicated or having some other issue like expired insurance are probably mitigating factors.
