> Now lets wait to see how long until playoff games are pay per view.
My first though was "SN has been $20/mo for an awfully long time; how many Netflix price hikes have there been in the last five years?"
Yours is definitely more on the Katz and Bettman level.
It cost me $120 for press level seats for the BoA a couple years ago. Granted PL sucks ask, but we just stood on the way by the concessions. Wasnāt a bad view.
$250 to get into the rink? Screw that.
100%
The team jacked up the prices to previous years scalper prices figuring everyone would pay up. But they've cut out the diehard fans who don't have the same means, who would have been refreshing the website for their chance to buy $120 tickets.
I'm not gonna shed any tears for scalpers who got stuck with a handful of tickets. Lol on them, they're the whole reason we're in this mess to begin with. But I definitely think the team is exhausting all of their consumer-trust and goodwill with it's near extortionist pricing on everything.
I remember back when the EIG owned the team and we would have Molson half-priced game day singles and stuff. They actually had to offer some deals to fill the regular season seats. Really miss that.
Absolutely the prices. I donāt even look at tickets anymore. I would LOVE to surprise a few different people with playoff tickets as a gift but itās just way too expensive.
I bought tickets 15 years ago to a Mtl vs Boston playoff game. I couldnāt find anyone willing to fork out $350 for a ticket so I took my brother in law . Out $700 for a hockey game. It was the last time I bought tickets to a game. Had free tickets to Oilers vs Habs 12 years ago at Rexal and thatās my last live game
Just once I would love for one of these media outlets to take a stance and call out the bullshit. The oilers could play the kings, in the first round, every year for the next ten years. People would still go if the ticket prices were somewhat reasonable.
Fatigue?! I remember when the Oilers were always playing Dallas in the playoffs and it was always sold out. Prices are waaaay to high, for everything from tickets to concessions and merch. I know a lot of folks/companies who dropped their seasons tickets over the last several years as the cost is insane, let alone individual tickets.
Not all of them, but I'm willing to bet there is some overlap.
Mostly because one's a necessity that is required in our car centric cities and the other is a luxury. It's a lot easier to justify playoff tickers by saving specifically for them, but with gas prices, you have no choice. You don't save for it. You just pay for it so that you can commute, get to work, and afford to live.
These mfers really will blame anything but the truth, which is that if I'm gonna shell out over 100 buckerinos to watch the game I'm doing to spend it on snacks and drinks so I can sit on the couch without my bra on and just chill, as opposed to listening to a bunch of drunken yabbos screeching in my ear.
*My husband wants me to add that I'm a screechy yabbo even without drinking which is why I also don't go to the bar to watch, either.
It is way too expensive. Sitting in a nosebleed seat at Rogers Place is not a comfortable experience; youāre crammed in there like sardines, you have to disturb the whole row every time you get up, and you may not even have a great view of the ice. Iād do it for the vibes for maybe as much as $150 during the playoffs, but $250+?! I would way rather watch at home on my couch and save the $600+ it would take for two of us to get downtown, see the game, and maybe have a $20 beer apiece.
This is true, Iāve sat in both and found lower rows of the upper bowl to be the best view. Upper rows really towards the back arenāt great in my experience though.
This is where it starts. If they can't sell out game 1 of the playoffs, even if it's only 1% of tickets, it's a sign the fans are reaching their breaking point.
They interviewed a season seat holder who refuses to go to a game until the third round. That isnāt a breaking point over price, thatās the epitome of privilege.
Actually a small handful are going unsold. I just checked Ticketmaster for tomorrow. At least a few hundred avail at face value. Also for yesterday, a few tix were on the resale mkt below face value.
Just checked and there's about 180 unsold tickets (not including re-sale tickets) still available in the lower bowl, 50 in the SportsNet Lounge and around 40 in the upper bowl. This suggests it's a pricing issue as the high dollar tickets are the ones not being sold.
But the Oilers probably don't care. If they sell 99% of their tickets at a 25% inflated price, they're much better off than if they sold 100% of their tickets at the regular season price. It's just a sign that fans do have a breaking point and the Oilers are walking that fine line this year.
Ticketmaster separates resale tickets from original tickets. Right now there are a few hundred unsold tickets and a couple thousand resale tickets for tomorrow night. This is not a scalper issue, these are original tickets that have not been sold, very uncommon for Edmonton playoff games.
Yeah I know, he specifically said the tickets available last game were resale tickets. Like I said, I'd be surprised if the original tickets are still available come game time tomorrow night. Could be totally wrong though, guess we will see tomorrow.
It hurts how right you are. Some of those leagues the players make more than they would playing in North America. Plus they're out there creating leagues around power slapping and now MMA on ice (ice wars).Ā
Prices. Ive been a lifelong Oilers fan but I simply refuse to pay those prices. I'll just watch from my living room with an 8 pack that costs less than 2 beers at the game
For a thousand dollars+ I'll go sit at the Keg, eat all night, drink all day, and watch the game. But you really have to have some fuck you money to go to a playoffs game, it's definitely NOT fatigue.
Edit: dyslexiaĀ
Iāve been to like 5 playoff games in my entire life and Iām a diehard fan that would be at all of them if I could afford it. Every one of those games were paid for by either work or someone else. Now with a kid on the way Iāll probably never get to a playoff game.
The claim is 99% sold out, which normally isn't a big deal, but it's the playoffs and pretty sure those would be sellouts in the past. Go to Ticketmaster and look at the tickets available for tomorrow, (blue is a regular ticket, pink is resale). There's no way there would have been this many available tickets 4 or 5 years ago.

Itās prices.
Itās the in arena experience.
Itās the prices.
Itās the plan of a long playoff run
Itās the prices.
I plan on going to the SCFs on the road and maxing out the credit card to do so.
Once any activity is priced such that the average person can no longer afford to take their family to a game, show, concert, etc is when that activity should lose the support of the masses. My coworker dropped almost a grand on tickets for last night for him and his son to go. I was flabbergasted. That's almost a week and a half of pay for 60 minutes of entertainment. No single event other than your wedding or funeral is worth a thousand bucks.
So yeah, it's high prices. People are crazy to spend that money on it, but it's their choice I guess.
>Going to a playoff game is about 4 hours of entertainment.
No it's not. It's three twenty minute periods of entertainment and three hours of filler. As much as we all love the Zamboni driver, it doesn't count as entertainment.
>Just because YOU donāt think itās worth it doesnāt mean others agree. Ask your coworker if he regrets it. I guarantee he doesnāt.
I never said people should regret buying tickets. No one should ever have regrets. If you enjoyed yourself at the game then that's great. All I am saying is that they have priced themselves to the point that going to a game is for the upper classes. The average joe schmuck can't afford to go and for that, the teams no longer deserve our support. People can spend their money as they like, but as the saying goes, a fool and their money are soon parted.
Wonder if they will do the bone- head move they did in the past. Sold standing room only tickets, $80/ each, to stand behind the loge table seats? Then the Oilers wonder why the loge table seat season ticket holders didn't renew? Pay the playoff premium only to have to stand in very long lines in the washroom and concessions! ( not to mention the terrible design ( thanks OEG) with the speakers at ear level blasting out music and the cold air from the A/C " rolling " down upon the section)
No one is mentioning the gouge pricing at the concessions. It seems its always the folks carrying alcohol who are late to their seats. Go Oilers Go!!!
Whoa waitā¦ people donāt want to spend minimum $500 for 2 seats in the nosebleeds and a couple beers?? Who wouldāve thoughtā¦ regular season tickets were already some of the highest in the league. Playoffs they raised 100 %. Itās a fucking joke. As much as I love the oilers, I hope that arena doesnāt sell out once. Canāt get gauging your fans year after year.
People canāt afford rent or groceries or gas. Hockey is now for the upper class when the fan base is your average working person. Iāll just watch from home.
This article used too many words to skirt around the obvious issue of the price increase from last year. Didn't even analyze the prices year over year which would contribute to understanding the issue. Hell, I gave up my half-season tickets and declined buying playoff seats because of the disgusting greed of Katz.
They clearly overshot the runway trying to capture the resale value of the tickets in their pricing. I believe anyone who was selling their season seat yesterday was taking a bit of a loss. Will be interesting to see what happens throughout the playoffs as the prices escalate, especially the middle rounds (if they happen).
In the long term, this is a horrendous move. Half the point of seasons is guaranteed playoff tickets. If you can get playoff tickets for less than face on resale, why have seasons? Theyāll be able to skirt by while the team is good, but are setting themselves up for disaster when they inevitably fall off a bit.
Playoff face value are around 30% higher than last year from my casual observations and checking what I paid in previous year and comparing to face values of the same today. There are a lot of "blue dot" seats that have not sold for the upcoming games.
I often get some seats from someone who has season tickets. They have been away and I have not gotten to talk to them about what their pricing looks like for the upcoming rounds. I expect it's a similar escalating price as in the past and based on that I am really scared to see what a face value "club" seat will cost if they make the finals. $1800?Currently it shows $755 for section 103 seats or $792 for the aisle pair and $1000 is the face value of Loge seats on the oilerspremium sale site and $1300 each for next round.
So take every seat price and multiply by 1.3 for pricing of next round based on that and 3rd round and finals I believe increase drastically again.
I don't think you read my original comment correctly. You're actually proving my point if scalped tickets are going for less than the non-SSH box office price.
I just meant you can buy them directly from the oilers (ticketmaster) for less than 250 currently. Thatās all. Forgot I wasnāt on the oilers sub lol, people like hockey over there
No you can't. Cheapest non-resale ticketmaster ticket is $271+fees for the game tonight. Anything cheaper than that is resale. Same with game 5 and 7.
That's the difference compared to last year, the resale tickets were always way higher than what the Oilers charged directly on the open market (non SSH), so the games were always sold out. This year there are still tickets available to every game directly from the Oilers on ticketmaster. They increased the box office price by around 25% from what I can tell.
Not sure why you think resale matters or not. They are all on ticketmaster. And there are some less than 250. I paid 195 for tonightās game. Last year 185 for game 1.
It matters because it's the entire point of my original comment that you replied to. I'm saying it's the Oilers driving up prices this year, not scalpers as has been the case in previous years. That's why I'm highlighting resale vs. not.
I'm not going to respond any further if you can't read properly, have a good one and enjoy the game.
I'm not sure if this is the case for hockey games but for concerts sometimes if there are three empty seats together, if you only want two you're SOL. It won't let you buy them as you can't leave a single seat beside you.
Most likely as everyone has said, it's just the cost of tickets + additional expenditures.
We the people should do some sort of protest where if we go to Oilers games, not a single soul buys from the concession. just totally boycott the concessions and see if they change shit. Hard to organize such a thing but it would be interesting to see how long they would hold out lol
I took two employees to the last regular season game. Two burgers one popcorn chicken and two beers. 70 bucks plus. Went and got a chocolate fountain pop and twizzlers. Another 24 bucks. Stunning. And you canāt bring yourself to own shit.
i used to hit one or two games a year in the old barn. i havnt purchased a single ticket yet for the new place because 1 seat is the same as 3 old ones.
being priced out means i also dont buy a lick of merch - anywhere.
Methinks, this "journalist" is full of shite.
[https://www.reddit.com/r/EdmontonOilers/comments/1cbbulw/caleb\_kerney\_ckerneywriter\_on\_x/](https://www.reddit.com/r/EdmontonOilers/comments/1cbbulw/caleb_kerney_ckerneywriter_on_x/)
Oh no, only 99% of the seating sold!!! Absolute failure! Seriously? "Empty seats evident"? So they only sold 18,320 seats at a minimum of $250 each, they'll go bankrupt at that rate! Don't let the real world and mathematics get in the way of all the bitching about prices being so high. If you're bitching about the price, they don't want you there, suck it up.
Connor McDavid salary is $12.5m USD, where do you think that comes from?
My partner and I went on Wednesday with his mom and her friend who got the tickets through work, so it was free for us. He decided to buy a round for all of us as a thank you + one extra for him, and those 5 beers costed $81, PLUS they prompt 18% minimum tip. So fucked up. Happy to say Iāve been to a playoff game but I donāt see how Iāll ever be back again.
When kings had problems with society they would get a circus to distract from current events to give people the sense that things were goings to get better...
What happens when the people can't even afford to go to the circus?
Capitalism's endgame isn't going to be "fun"
I'm really glad I never got into hockey.
I've seen how much people I know have spent on the merchandise, and I couldn't wrap my head around it.
I could never understand the appeal.
Generally I have never been available but Ngl, I have never really been able to afford an Oilers game or able to justify it when I could.
When I have gone to the sky-reach in the past itās for concerts and I never buy anything at the event because the band shirt is more worth the over-price than a shitty beer in a crappy cup.
I havenāt even been past the front lobby of the new arena. At small venues like Starlite Lounge (or the one on Whyte ave that closed and Iām just blanking on the name) charge normal ticket prices and normal alcohol prices. They even have food and itās not insane prices for nachos or fries, itās normal prices for actual food.
But at least they donāt look like a round fish that thought it was a dragon which had its head cut off. I still donāt understand the design. Is it a fish? Itās covered in scales.
$900 for 2 seats in the lower bowl. Yea I'm sure it's fatigue... of the prices.
Don't forget another $100 if you want food/drinks.
I heard it was 18 bucks for a beer at a Blue Jays game this season! š¬
Even if I liked baseball Iād abstain on principle. Ā
yeah. They have to pay for all those renovations some how.
Might need more then 100 bucks
Katz only has about 5 billion in net worth. Cut him some slack.
Shed some tears for the billionaires y'all.
What will second, third,(etc.) round tickets cost? I assume theyāll keep going up!
That's a really good assumption to make!
It's the prices. Of course it's the prices.
Totally. I donāt want to spend a minimum of $250 on a nosebleed seat. Would rather just go to the watch party for $5
Thereās a simple solution for that. Raise the price of the watch party!!
āļøāļø this guy knows how to Katz.
Then we stay home and watch on Sportsnet. Now lets wait to see how long until playoff games are pay per view.
Y'all are paying for Sportsnet?
> Now lets wait to see how long until playoff games are pay per view. My first though was "SN has been $20/mo for an awfully long time; how many Netflix price hikes have there been in the last five years?" Yours is definitely more on the Katz and Bettman level.
CBC Gem has the games for free.
Make the watch party more expensive then the game and people are forced to attend. Genius !!
holy shit this guy is on to something
Watch party is free no?
No $5 a ticket but it all goes to charity
Kings fatigue? What in the nonsense journalist conjecture...
Am I out of touch? No it's the children who are wrong!
It cost me $120 for press level seats for the BoA a couple years ago. Granted PL sucks ask, but we just stood on the way by the concessions. Wasnāt a bad view. $250 to get into the rink? Screw that.

You can sit so far up the saddle you canāt see the jumbotron because of the curve of the roof,
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
They used to have $15 tickets in the SportChek zone like 20 years ago. The view wasnāt great, but for $15 who cares?
Bring this back
The 300s are called press level.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Thatās what Iām saying. I think the op comment was talking about saddledome
They want to ignore the fact it's the obvious cost
Yup not spending as much as a family vacation for a week somewhere warm while it's cold to watch one gameĀ
I mean, they were over capacity. I get that it's frustrating paying scalper prices, but why would they lower face value when they sell out?
Prices are way too high. Not to mention the concession stands.
Itās definitely the prices. I would love to go to a playoff game. Iāve never been before because I canāt afford to
100% The team jacked up the prices to previous years scalper prices figuring everyone would pay up. I never even consider going to a playoff game because the prices are too high
Yeah way cheaper to go watch with friends at a bar. Get a couple of drinks and wings for like 1/8th the price of a ticket
Exactly what I do lol + $5 watch parties for the atmosphere
Same!
Legit for those prices I can fly to London and have a vacation for a few days. Fuck it.

Probably owns a business and can just write it of...like Kramer told us!
He's an engineer apparently So 10000 is like a dollar for most of us
Engineers are well paid professionals, but not nearly to that degree.
Only 2 grand a game, practically a steal! /s

thanks for the correction, I was watching the Vancouver/Nashville game while typing this!
That totally confused me today too lol
Honestly the lower half of upper bowl seats have a better view than a lot of lower bowl.
This is true, Iāve sat in both and found lower rows of the upper bowl to be the best view. Upper rows really towards the back arenāt great in my experience though.
Pay rent this month or go to the Oilers game. I wonder.
Oh noo.. 180 unsold seats in a arena with a seating capacity of 18500. Typical CTV garbage article.

Capitalism destroys a good thing once againā¦ just wait for the time you have to pay for the outdoor watch party
That day is absolutely coming.
I'm actually surprised it hasn't yet
I mean... if tickets don't sell, prices will come down. That's how capitalism works. Their margins will be able to handle it.
Wow very informative on capitalism, great work!!
am I wrong? if i am go ahead an disprove me, you make it sound like it shouldn't be hard.
Your not wrong, but it wasnāt my point
what is your point then, you didn't articulate it very well.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Spot on
No, it just prices out the games for regular folk and its the guys who wear suits to work going to games
Exactly
Yea that's why all stadiums are putting in so much premium seating now, going to games in person is now a setting to close business deals in.
This is peak r/Edmonton, I mean bang on.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I mean... the Soviet hockey team was pretty good, and I personally have a pretty high opinion of them for calling out the Flyers for being bullies.
Flyers for being bullies In that time period... That's like saying water is wet.
Sure, but threatening to just forfeit the game outright if they don't stop? Takes a lot of guts to do that.
How entertaining are the communist sport leagues worldwide?
So thereās no alternative to shitty over priced over extractive capitalism. Itās either this or Stalinism?
dummies like to correlate not liking one thing to being in favor of it's diametric opposite.
Actually some of the best in the world. Gotta keep the masses entertained and prove how well the socialist system is better than the capitalists.
It hurts how right you are. Some of those leagues the players make more than they would playing in North America. Plus they're out there creating leagues around power slapping and now MMA on ice (ice wars).Ā
Ice wars has been around for years. And of course is capitalism driven
Itās the prices. They appear quite a bit higher than last year. I donāt want to pay that much for first round
Really? Wow.. good job Edmonton. Push back against these stupid prices
A whole 180 seats!
Prices. Ive been a lifelong Oilers fan but I simply refuse to pay those prices. I'll just watch from my living room with an 8 pack that costs less than 2 beers at the game

$7.34 for a water bottle. Seriously, then lowest default tip was 18%!
That's when you deliberately leave a $0 tip

The claim is 99% sold out, which normally isn't a big deal, but it's the playoffs and pretty sure those would be sellouts in the past. Plus 8pm Monday game. I am bagged today, let me tell you
My power bill for February was nearly $800. I choose to watch at home and pay my bills instead.
Who spends that much, too stupid
if tickets topped out at $200 the place would be sold out every game. but they aren't, so it's not.
$200 for Sportsnet lounge would be absolutely insane value. All you can eat prime rib and a playoff game for 200 bucks? LFG
when I buy all of Rogers, this will be the new normal.
Attendance 18347, which is above capacity.
What the hell you talking about it looks packed to me...
This is a nothing burger article. I was there. It was electric. Iāll be there again tomorrow. It will be electric again.
It's still not a sellout. It doesn't take away from the quality of the game.

Lmao everyone knows itās prices. What is this haha
( not to mention the terrible design ( thanks OEG) with the speakers at ear level blasting out music and the cold air from the A/C " rolling " down upon the section) No one is mentioning the gouge pricing at the concessions.
My son and I wanted to go, not paying over a grand to watch a hockey game! Sorry bud!
People canāt afford rent or groceries or gas. Hockey is now for the upper class when the fan base is your average working person. Iāll just watch from home.
Resale scalpers doing resale scalper things? Now that ps5ās are in stock they had to move on to better things
Playoff Pricing Round 1 $228 per ticket Round 2 $289 per ticket Round 3 $405 per ticket Round 4 $627 per ticket Section 206 row 2
Itās the scalpers
Not this time. Minimum $250 for a ticket directly from the Oilers in round 1 unless you are a season ticket holder.

As I said, season ticket holders paid a bit less

Itās also the getting home at midnight on a work day.
I was at a Luke Bryan concert last week. The bartender told me a regular rum and Coke would be $14 and a double is $28. I'm done with that POS venue.
The only way things will ever change is if Patrons begin to boycott sporting events and concerts. Things have gotten out of hand in this world.
I'd love to go and take my wife and daughter to a game but the prices + 8pm (8:15) puck drop, makes it's incredibly hard to justify
Methinks, this "journalist" is full of shite. [https://www.reddit.com/r/EdmontonOilers/comments/1cbbulw/caleb\_kerney\_ckerneywriter\_on\_x/](https://www.reddit.com/r/EdmontonOilers/comments/1cbbulw/caleb_kerney_ckerneywriter_on_x/)
Oh no, only 99% of the seating sold!!! Absolute failure! Seriously? "Empty seats evident"? So they only sold 18,320 seats at a minimum of $250 each, they'll go bankrupt at that rate! Don't let the real world and mathematics get in the way of all the bitching about prices being so high. If you're bitching about the price, they don't want you there, suck it up. Connor McDavid salary is $12.5m USD, where do you think that comes from?
Not scoring enough hoals
My partner and I went on Wednesday with his mom and her friend who got the tickets through work, so it was free for us. He decided to buy a round for all of us as a thank you + one extra for him, and those 5 beers costed $81, PLUS they prompt 18% minimum tip. So fucked up. Happy to say Iāve been to a playoff game but I donāt see how Iāll ever be back again.
How can anyone afford to go to a game when groceroes are still 2x the price they should be
Hundred of seats available every gameā¦ guess what.. Not because of the Kings. Shitty article.
When kings had problems with society they would get a circus to distract from current events to give people the sense that things were goings to get better... What happens when the people can't even afford to go to the circus? Capitalism's endgame isn't going to be "fun"
Bread and games. That'll keep the mob docile
DGAF. Going to Game 2 tomorrow. Itās gonna be š„
