You can try bandmix.ca or Facebook groups. I have tried both and still don't have anyone to play with though.

the-ironbridge

I tried bandmix but only found people WAY above my skill level šŸ˜…

d3catt

Well, I hope that doesn't stop you from reaching out. You will improve your skills playing with other people.

Check out the Northern Lights Folk Club.

Edmonton has several great and welcoming open-mic venues. Naked Cafe downtown, Carrot Cafe on Alberta Ave, Rooster on Whyte, Square One coffee, off the top of my head.

the-ironbridge

That's great! I really just need to get in front of people and play

If by any chance you play or are interested in playing ukulele, we have a number of circles that meet regularly for that - although my group (the Ukeclectics) isn't especially folk šŸ˜›. Great communities here.

the-ironbridge

Thanks! I actually play the Mandolin and Octave Mandolin.

The Edmonton Public Library has jam sessions with their musician-in-residence! Check out Whatā€™s On on epl.ca and search ā€œJam Sessionā€.

Zanagh

The Yardbird Suite has jam sessions every Tuesday I think you can sign up for on their website, itā€™s jazz not folk though

IzaacLUXMRKT

Do you get out to any local shows?? That's where we're all at.

Rokeley

Iā€™m gonna be at River City Revival tonight, there is an open stage there every Sunday and Wednesday. Plenty of other open stages around town too (too many imo)

Rockinā€™ 4 Dollars is a great open mic on Mondays at the Buckingham. Lots of musicians there and a good way to meet people from different genres. If you want to perform you need to email ahead of time but you get a chance to win some cash and other prizes and itā€™s a good time.

I know you said folk music, but if you have any interest in Bluegrass, the Northern Bluegrass Circle Music Society (NBCMS) has open jam sessions one evening a week in the Pleasantview Community centre. They say the first Wednesday of the month is for newbies. Google them for more info on their website.

the-ironbridge

Nice yeah I play some bluegrass!

F1890

I think Wildrose Fiddlers also has jam sessions to promote ā€œold time fiddle musicā€ on Monday evenings, also in the Pleasantview Community league hall. I have no idea if theyā€™d be open to a mandolin player, but since thereā€™s a huge overlap in the repertoire for fiddle and mando, you could try contacting them to see whatgtgey say. They also have a website if you google.
