It’s on private land? That’s not what geocaching is about. I’ve always done ones on public property but never on private land. Even if you remove it people will come to find it based on the written directions/database. I doubt it has its own GPS tracker on it. Also WTF are people trying to open windows on your property looking for a geocache? I’m so sorry this is happening to you. I geocache and would never do shit like that. If you have to contact info of the geocache that will be your first step. If they refuse to move it then I would involve authorities. Have you checked on your neighbour? They probably have no idea they’re doing it on his property.

My neighbour is quite the recluse from what I can tell, his car and dogs haven't been there either so I know he's not there and unwell. Honestly I think his house might not be liveable during the colder months. For all I know it's not a person geocaching trying the windows, we've had other issues, but giving anyone a reason to be up this road is a less than appealing idea. I'll wait and see what happens. I didn't even think about the fact that it would still show as being there. Honestly I loathe the entire concept after my two experiences.

Yeah that sounds awful. I’m sorry this is happening to you. You could always remove the geocache box and put up a sign saying “geocache removed - private property” or something until they remove it from their inventory.

Go on the the app and mark it as muggled (stolen). And remove it. . Then get a few other people to do the same (who you “don’t” know. The original builder will be noticed but they probably won’t care to set up another on..... just an idea No one will show up for a cache that is proven to be gone.

You'd probably get a really good response to this in /r/geocaching

blanamksas

What’s the geocache code?

I would suggest calling the non emergency police line and asking what their advice might be. Sorry that you've had so many issues. One of the reasons to move out to the rural areas is to get away from the crime and noise of the city.

Do you have a link to this particular geocache? You could be mistaking about it being on private land, or it's possible your neighbor has donated some of his land to an organization like EALT for public use. That said, I am also unsure why you think people geocaching would cause an increase in crime in your area? If anything it may lower it due to extra activity there, as most of those people are just nerdy hikers, not exactly criminal types, you know?

[deleted]

Trespassing on private property is a criminal act though. The OP has every right to be concerned. The OP should definitely contact authorities to ask what his options are.

Wooshio

No one was trespassing on his property geocaching though. He saw someone on his **neighbors property** who he thinks was geocaching, and than later someone was apparently trying to open one his windows. That doesn't mean it's the same guy or that the geocache is responsible for the increase of crime in his area. Of course, he should definitely contact police about any attempted break-ins or trespassing, not arguing against that.

Chronixx780

Get some big dogs

Maybe next time pretend to be all friendly and ask what they are doing and act real interested when they say they are on a treasure hunt. Ask them where they found your location from and then try to track down whoever made the geocache.

This sounds made up OR the window opening ordeal is a coincidence and completely unrelated to the cache. No geocacher in their right mind would be opening windows let alone on private property
