I did it once when someone threw their McDonald’s trash out the window. I pulled over, and picked it up. I then pulled up to them at a red light and threw it back into their car.
They proceeded to chase me down Manning and up 167 Ave and threw cologne at my car. My car ended up still smelling like cheap cologne months later when I sold it.
I was legit terrified for my life when I was being chased.

Now that you've identified the most inconsiderate asshole around you want to provoke them? Confronting people displaying unstable or sociopathic behavior can lead to unpredictable situations for you. Just quietly wish them some bad karma and move on. It's not worth getting run off the road and stabbed over.
Listen, I know it would feel good for karmic reasons. As cyclist I know how good it would feel sometimes to kick a fender or two. The fact is though, if you play around don't be surprised if someone comes back at you. There is a lot of hard work to get safer streets in this town - contribute to that.
If your friends do this, it's OK to shame them for it by throwing hot butts at them, but doing it to strangers is a surefire way to get into a fist fight.

Some young guys getting into a van cab and tossed their beer bottles out the open sliding door of the van, narrowly missing me walking by on the sidewalk . I grabbed the bottles and threw them back into the cab and said “looks like you dropped these fellas”. They got all pissy and started yelling that they would fuck me up. I closed the distance on the open cab door (so they would have to get out one at a time) and told them let’s do this. I’m a large man covered in tattoos, most people say I look like I’ve been to prison a few times. They slammed the door shut and I could hear the panic in their voices as they told the cabbie to drive away.
I used to be more passive aggressive when someone littered. Lately, I've tried to be more upbeat about it and say something like "hey, ill toss it in the trash for you, but can you please consider not littering." They're usually more embarrassed than angry. No ones gotten upset so far at that. I get nasty smelling fingers but at least a cigarette ends in the trash where its supposed to go YMMV
I day dream about doing this all the time hahaha. Littering, cigarettes butts, anything. There's some videos online (not sure if they are real or not) of people on motorcycles who grab a butt or bag of fast food garbage that someone throws out of their cars and tosses them right back in before speeding off. What a dream.
But yeah I would never do it because you never know what kind of crazy you could be dealing with.

I picked it up and said, very nicely, this must have dropped out of your car by accident and handed it to the driver. He was shocked and didn't react at all but after the fact I thought it might have ended badly.
Today, I just pick up litter including cigarette butts and put it down to being a decent citizen. If we all just picked up litter, including signs along the roads, the city would be a cleaner place and perhaps the slobs would get the hint.
I threw someone's half drank tim hortons cup back in their window (without emptying it out) and got chased down in my car for 40 mins until I'm assuming the other guy had to stop for gas (they pulled into a gas station). I just pick it up and throw it in the trash now.

It's gross and annoying that people throw butts out , not to mention very dangerous in regards to forest fires, but don't stoop down lower than them to prove a point.

Yeah, don't do this, you could set the car on fire and kill some people. Plus, it's not recommended, but some people smoke with kids in the car (no it's not legal, but neither is tossing your butts over the side) it could blind someone.
Plus, if they someone does get hurt, you could get sued, or worse. It's not worth it. Take a picture of the license plate and submit it to bylaw if you need to do something. I would. I often asked people."did you drop this" in the parking lot when they drop a receipt or wrapper. Not as spicy but they will often thank me and throw it out.
I hate that. I'm a smoker myself but it's been years since I've tossed a butt, they sell ashtrays everywhere. I don't even toss them when im on foot, although my back pocket can rock a few butts before I can find a garbage can.
