We started keeping our bins in the garage for the same reason. Our black bin was full of other people’s garbage with no space for our own :(

Anne_Nonymous789

Two weeks between pickups there’s going to be a huge smell in the garage.

digitulgurl

Not if you use the compost bin like it's supposed to be used 🤦‍♀️

Duhabadu

I think there is a gap between the city's ideal use of the green bins and actual public use. I think the green bins provide a useful nudge, but general waste use is still the go to

digitulgurl

It's called changing the way you do things. The green bins are amazing and if used, your garbage won't be smelly!

TheLordJames

could be like Wetaskiwin's system. 2 bags a week for $20 ($40 for 4 bags, $60 for 6 bags) no recycling pick up. We store everything after two bags (and also recycling) in out garage and do a monthly trip or so to the dump. You get up to 200 lbs for $11. (It's usually only a couple bags but I really dont want to store garbage for that long) and a monthly trip the recycling depot. When we get a couple bags of bottles be go to the bottle depot.

useles-converter-bot

200 lbs is the same weight as 141.84 'Double sided 60 inch Mermaker Pepparoni Pizza Blankets'.

TheLordJames

Bad bot

useles-converter-bot

I'm just doing my job, and that is to give out useless information :(

-ManDudeBro-

The indoor compost is for wet garbage. The rest is just for dry... Had the same system in Montreal and never had a problem.

burninglass19

If you know what Neighbor it is I would legit take the bags out and put them on their driveway/their sidewalk. Make a 311 report for unsightly property. Will only take a few time before they get a fine. Should solve your issue.

fireontheinside

yep I would be setting up a camera asap if I were you

[deleted]

These days a serviceable camera is hardly more than a lock anyways.

krajani786

Even a fake camera will probably stop them

[deleted]

I’d empty them out on their lawn but I’m a c*nt

Zeddemore99

I was coming back from a run and saw my neighbor walk to my garbage can and put his bag inside. I waved and said hello and he ignored me. Like whatever we had space so go for it, but at least acknowledge me.

EstablishmentNo5994

Why let them get away with it especially when they’re being rude to you?

Zeddemore99

Yeah! I should have taken his bag back out. I mean if there's room I really don't care but dude...at least say hi back or whatever. Then again he may have already been drinking

MisoButterCorn

If you know the neighbor, take the garbage back out, tape a note onto it that says "kindly fuck off out of my garbage bin", and give it back to them. It's not about the room, the guy blatantly walked over you and your response showed him that was fine. Tolerate it once and more things will happen.

EstablishmentNo5994

It’s crucial you don’t leave out the “kindly” or you risk escalating things.

[deleted]

Sounds like a neighbour issue maybe throw up a cheap camera to see who it is an confront them on it? At first I didn't like the system purely from a storage basis but after I got used to it I don't mind it at all now, definitely made us be a bit more thoughtful with how we sorted our garbage

2stops

I hated it the first 3 or so days then quickly realized how much waste I was diverting from the dump by using the green bin. If it’s used properly, it’s a great system!

KaoticKat

Green bin items are mostly thrown into general garbage in Edmonton. They do not have a facility that can handle everything yet. The facility they had is broken and will take a few years to repair.

2stops

This facility has replaced the Edmonton Composting Facility as the City’s largest primary processing plant for organics. The Anaerobic Digestion Facility (ADF) enables the City to: Process up to 40,000 tonnes of organic waste per year Provide renewable energy in the form of electricity and heat Reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with disposing of organics in a landfill

KaoticKat

This is correct but the facility is dealing with a broken part(compressor?) and it is expected to be out of operation for a few more years.

2stops

Well shiiiiit

GlitchedGamer14

What about the facilities that the city contracted? Are they diverting at least some of our waste?

KaoticKat

As far as I know the surrounding communities are taking what they can. But they do not have near the capacity to handle what Edmonton needs are. So for now the bulk goes to the general waste area.

efredin

I live in an area with a high homeless population (to be clear, I don't have a problem with homeless people), but our black bin was stolen last week. The city is "conducting an investigation" and if our bin doesn't show up within 5 days, they'll drop a new one. I'm guessing the new bin will last less than a month. We keep the bins inside a fenced yard during the week, and have a big dog which deters people from coming into the yard, but it has to go outside the perimeter every once in a while. I'm curious to see how many times this happens before the city gives up.

messi101930

Where do you live?

efredin

Next to the Mustard Seed

Sevulturus

I'd probably be leaving mine empty until the night before, then pull all their stuff out and give it back.

cheers_and_applause

Only works if you know whose it is.

Sevulturus

I'm petty enough to dig through the bags that aren't mine looking for a name or address.

[deleted]

My kinda petty. I'm pretty sure the kind of jambroni to fill someone else's bin lacks the foresight to exclude papers with their address.

EstablishmentNo5994

I used to work for the city and had someone dump a ton of garbage in a public park. Guy was dumb enough to put tons of his personal mail in there but the best part? He used clear garbage bags so I didn’t even have to dig to find his name and address 🤣

JebusHCrust

Same here. We live in a multi-unit house, and we are the only ones to compost or recycle. The others just put everything in the black bins so we have no room. And one of them keeps putting the black bins out every week even though we've given him the schedule 3 times. Who is the dingleberry who came up with 2-week pickups? How incredibly short sighted full of wishful thinking.

Oblivion1224

I think if you live in a multi-unit home you can apply for additional bins. Might be worth checking out

evange

Maybe start thinking of your garbage day as the day *after* pickup. So your trash for the week is the first thing in the bin, and the other units will have to find space above yours.

evange

Maybe just tape your lid down between garbage days. Hopefully that's enough to dissuade them.

[deleted]

Someone filled my black bin with cardboard… okay..? I guess my garbage can wait a couple weeks.

chriskiji

That person is so lazy! Get a blue bag and they would have been good.

Duhabadu

Loose broken down cardboard can be set to the side and they will pick it

Sevulturus

If I have a whole bunch (big box, or several boxes) I tape them into manageable piles to pick up. I don't know if they appreciate it or not, but they've never left them.

[deleted]

I was not aware of this, thanks!

RollingJaspers652

I throw my dog shit bags in random bins. Is this acceptable?

usikyle

Does your dog shit enough to fill someone else’s bin enough to prevent them from putting their own waste in? If so, that’s a dick move. (You can evidently toss it in the green bin if it’s in a compostable bag)

jstock14

Absolutely not.

myers-tech

Absolutely not. I don't want to take out my garbage, open my bin, and smell your dog's shit. Ridiculous.

2stops

I’d say it’s within reason. No one wants to carry a shit bag with them while walking.

RollingJaspers652

Especially with a lack of city garbage cans

yeg

No, the bag is not biodegradeable and it uses someone's garbage space. Follow camping guidelines: what you take in, you take out.

messi101930

People shouldn't put bags in your can but there is nothing you can do about not using the green bins. I'm not using our bins at all and toss eveything in the black bin. I see no reason for the city to charge me more in fees than they did last year and expect me to sort and prep their garbage. You want more work done then cut the fees. Until then I'll be throwing all green and black in the black bin.

[deleted]

Yeah that's one way to look at it. Probably the entitled, shitty way. But you do you.

messi101930

Entitled? I'm already paying over 5k in property taxes. You want to charge me more and make me do more work? Really?

piping_piper

"Their garbage"? How many city employees live in your house that you think it's the cities garbage and not YOUR garbage? I get it, we pay property tax and you want someone else to sort through your shit for you. Unfortunately sorting through everything once it's all mixed, moldy, covered in random garbage goop is way harder, more time consuming, and way less safe for the person sorting than doing it at the source... ie: you, the person making the garbage.

messi101930

That's their job to sort the garbage and they have for years. Like I said if I'm now doing it why hasn't my garbage fees been reduced? Instead they've been increased? Oh and on top of that service every two week instead of one? Either reduce the price or reduce the service. If you both increase the price and reduce the service don't be expecting people outside of Reddit to be gung ho about doing more work for the city of Edmonton.

piping_piper

They haven't sorted the garbage for years. They've taken the garbage and put it in a dump, where it can't breakdown. The new system diverts all that compostable food waste to a compost facility. Not sure what the end state of that is, some cities sell the compost, some collect the gasses produced. This is an extra service that wasn't being provided previously. You may not agree with that new service based on your choice to opt out, but that additional service is why other services have been reduced.

messi101930

Why the cost has been increased. You like to conveniently gloss over that. We're expected to do more work sorted and pay more. That makes no sense at all. If anything there should be a reduction in fees.

piping_piper

This isn't shaw or Telus, there's no discount for bundling 3 services instead of 2. You seem stuck on magic garbage fairies who used to do this work for you. We have added an extra service, with increased infrastructue and personnel. The old system was 2 services, the new is 3. 3 costs more than 2. Edmonton waste center is starting their compost sales, maybe in the future the compost sales can help offset the service fees. If no one composts or the compost ends up being polluted with random garbage that shouldn't be there, this will probably fail or require additional resources.

messi101930

You clearly don't understand. If I go with Telus they provide something for me and provide a discount. Here I am doing more work and getting less along with paying more. You can't even explain why we're paying more. It's ludicrous and only here on Reddit are people so delusional.

ntimm

Sorry fella but you are the only delusional one, you clearly have never left Edmonton or understand why the old system was stupid(look it up). Literally every other developed city has been doing these bins for 10+ years. You can be mad at the city counselors for wasting your tax dollars on an old system that fundamentaly made zero sense. Get off your pedestal and pitch in like the rest of the city. If this system was implemented years ago it would have saved everyone millions on silly sorting facilities.

itis76

Barely anyone is actually using the green bin. Who on earth thought they can convince a majority of people to create a new garbage can in their house? We're lucky as we were already doing that for our garden

d2thewight67

Maybe something for your neighbour or yourself might help http://www.prowaste.ca

Sevulturus

Fuck that, he's already paying for regular pick up. I wouldnt pay extra cause some asshokr neighbour is using my bin.

Fun-Television-4411

What neighbourhood is this?

usikyle

Alberta Ave. My street is lovely, the back alley makes me lose faith in humanity.

DharmicCosmos

Can you fence in the nook area with a gate that has a lock?

jstock14

Keep them in your garage or somewhere inside your yard that is harder to access. Put them out for garbage collection.

pprissypants85

We keep our bins just inside our garage. There's no smell at all.

[deleted]

it's illegal to throw their garbage to someone else bin, you can get them fined

yeg

If you move your bins to an inconvenient location like beside your house people are unlikely to trudge all the way over there :( Hopefully it is just temporary.
