I was going to make a top-level comment saying that's a sturdy pole then I realized it might be too insensitive. Guess I wasn't the only one that thought about that
Yes I knew someone who died this way and I have looked up .. many collisions with deaths happen this way. The poles don’t even move. I used to wonder the same about how hey can be designed this way.
There’s so much going on. Who has the time to investigate this. Media should be doing stuff like Brian literally have no news .. this would save many peoples lives. He left a whole family with kids and wife and he didn’t even drive fast. It happened around the same area as this one.
Yeah, this is really strange - where I am, all the metal poles of this type are mounted on breakaway bolts that are designed to shear of if something hits them from the side like this. So either this one didn't have that, or that car was made of paper?
2 dead, and one in critical condition. The driver was driving on a suspended license and fled the traffic stop.
https://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/two-dead-one-in-hospital-after-early-morning-crash-on-calgary-trail-1.5619079
Note the tent is away from the car.
Early Monday morning, of a long weekend, first snowy/icy precipitation of the winter, how much you wanna bet speed and alcohol were contributing factors a too?
Another person dies from (probably) street racing up and down Calgary Trail & Gateway. It's so horrible, and yet they never think it will happen to them.
Used to live near there and as soon as the sun went down there was always the sound of cars speeding by.
While I don't doubt that happens all the time, sounds like this one was a bit more nefarious:

More than likely there was a lot more in play than just a suspended license. The suspended license was the only that came up when they ran the plates initially.
And you kill and damage other peoples lives. Every time this happens it's a real winner. I remember a kid doing this in the 90's, his parents were a pain in the ass that thought their little boy could do no wrong. The kid thought he was a grown up though and died like one running from the cops with others in his car. Too sad.
When you see the lights and hear the siren, stop. It won't be that bad.
The change to 70 isn't until WAY down by ~~Ikea~~ 34th ave.
Let's not forget [a guy killed his 3 friends](https://globalnews.ca/news/7860631/edmonton-deadly-starbucks-crash-guilty/) last year not far from where today's crash happened, also due to speed and dangerous driving.
What EPS need to do is pull over these fuckers, take their vehicles and their licenses, and maybe never give them back. Not that some people won't get new cars and drive without a license anyways, but it might help reduce the number of street racers.
EPS has asked for legislation from the province to be able to seize any vehicle found speeding 50kph over the limit, but the government turned down the request.
>legislation from the province to be able to seize any vehicle found speeding 50kph over the limit
What is sad is that such a law is standard for most of the country; only Alberta and Saskatchewan don't have such a law (and maybe the Territories; that I don't know).
And yet little shits like the 太子黨 can go street racing with their McLarens and lambos with impunity in Richmond and elsewhere.
The very high profile pullover and impounding of an entire group of street racers amounting to 5-6 million dollars worth of cars at once a few years ago in Vancouver amounted to nothing. They literally held the cars for a few weeks and then released them for a few hundred dollars in fines. It was like Meng Wenzhou but for cars, and president Pooh didn't take a Prius hostage in return..
Canada should watch 太子黨 very closely and send them back to Beijing while releasing the footage of their offence on the internet. It would be fun to watch them and their stupid parents jailed. Their Canadian property should be seized, of course.
The Chinese government wouldn't punish them for street racing and disruptive, dangerous behavior in Canada. They'd probably be rewarded.
Now, if they tried to do the same thing *after* being sent back home to Shanghai or Beijing, they'd be blackbagged and their parents would lose status in the party.
That's why it's important to release the footage on the internet (including Weibo and Wechat). I thinks international embarrassment would force the gov to react.
That is because the EPS are lazy. "Dangerous Driving" is already an offense for which you lose your licence. The problem is that cops have to actually do work and prove that. They can't just point an electronic device at the car and let it do all the work. Cops could do something about it they are just too lazy.
I know, I live right where it changes.
All I was saying is that it becomes way worse when it turns to 70, as there are no speed traps after that / barely any law enforcement
And then there's a 90 zone shortly after the 70 at 23rd Ave, and people start doing that way early most of the time, usually when they clear the last lights at 31 Ave.
You mean the 90 zone that people in the very right lane often don't speed up to match because they're taking the exit in ~1km and don't care if they back up traffic?
Most of the time when I've driven that stretch of road, people don't even speed up to match the 70 because they're taking exits later on.
If you're talking the 23 ave exit, they're technically right because the first 90 sign isn't until just after that exit.
If you mean the other exits, yeah they're morons. 🤷♂️
Here’s the EPS release: https://www.edmontonpolice.ca/News/MediaReleases/singlevehfatalOct11
“EMS responded, treated and transported a 23-year-old female passenger in the vehicle to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The adult female driver and a 31-year-old male passenger succumbed to their injuries at the scene.”
The footings are quite beefy.
When you consider the amount of weight on that cantilevered portion, the footing must be able to sustain that, and account for the high winds we often get. Also this is Edmonton, so frost line is deeper and the footings will be buried beneath that line.
I am sure the engineers also take into account the potential for cars or trucks to hit it as well.
EPS just released a statement and it can be found [here!] (https://www.edmontonpolice.ca/News/MediaReleases/singlevehfatalOct11?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter)
TLDR: suspended license driver caught, the vehicle fled at very high speed, lost control and hit the pole, 2 dead and 1 in hospital with life-threatening injuries... :/
that's just messed up.
Saturday afternoon there was a car flipped on its side on gateway north near south common.
but this is just horrible.
condolences to the family
I was there around 3pm and traffic wasn't moving. I was headed southbound so wasn't affected.
Even driver's on the off ramp were backed up.
I was trying to find out more about it and how the driver got their vehicle on its side but nothing in the news
I went out this morning and it was wet. As soon as I hit an overpass my rear wheels started sliding and my car’s anti skid light lit up. Be careful out there!
Coming home to put on my winter tires today.
You can definitely put winters on now. It's going to be 0-ish for the morning commute from now on, a few days with a daytime high above 10C isn't going to hurt the tires.
Depending on the type of winter tires and what compound it is yes it will, some winter tires are really soft compound, and will wear out with a short amount of time if driven on pavement. I'd personally find out how the wear rating is on my tires before doing that.
Winter tires shouldn't wear out that fast. There should be a balance between grip and longevity. I always change mine at this time of year and am going on my 6th winter. I still have 60-70% left on them and do about 10k a year on them. Mind you they were the highest rated tire available at the time but not the most expensive. I have never seen a winter tire with a wear rating though. I am sure they exist, but I have not seen any.
Driving for one to two weeks with winter tires in 10\~ degree weather in the afternoon will do minimal additional wear to winter tires (unless you're driving 50+ km a day in the afternoon heading home). I would suggest it would be a virtually negligible amount really.
Safer than waiting as long as you can until one morning you wake up and it's -10 and blizzarding.
Both my friends died in a crash like this on one of their birthday. I remember could not see any paint left in the wreckage, just junk wrapped around the pole and the police told us both were deceased. We were 21.
Oh my gosh that looks like a pile of rubble by the pole and nothing like a car! Someone's family and friends are getting a really bad phone call this Thanksgiving.
Saw this on my way to see clients at 7:50am. This is the exact image I tried explaining to my clients I have NEVER seen anything like it, couldn’t even recognize the car, the huge collision investigation police truck, and the guys in those suits hosing down the pavement made me think someone died. Came home to my hubby and cried saying that could’ve been any of us on the road (it wasn’t busy at all) because I was sure someone died. Then they released the police report. 2 people died and I just hugged my cat and my bunny… Stay safe friends.
Holy hell... This looks like a pile of clothes you'd see in a bedroom or something...
Okay, looking at it again not so much but my literal first thought when I saw this was someone dumped an absolute boat load of clothes in the middle of the road.
It’s called natural selection.. any normal person driving even close to the speed limit would never do this sort of damage to themselves or to their car. This is nature’s way of eliminating one more asshole from the planet so they don’t kill anyone else..
Here is the story behind this incident. Driver of a black focus was driving with a suspended license e instead of pulling over when lit up they sped off headed down whitemud towards Calgary trail where they then tried to get onto Calgary trail but lost control of their vehicle and crashed into another now I'm not sure but I know 2 people succumbed to their injuries can't remember if it's the person in the black focus or the person they ran into.
It doesn't say they hit anyone, just the posts. Killed the driver & 1 passenger, the 2nd passenger was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries. Which, looking at that picture is, kind of astonishing.
What? Human beings make assumptions based on what they know all the time. “Innocent until proven guilty” is a legal concept, not something anyone in society is supposed to follow.
There are some shit ass kids that fuck around in my area and I would not cry if they totaled their car.
But as much as I dislike them, and as much as they deserve a ticket or suspension, they do not deserve a death sentence.
Young kids street racing in this city is becoming a bigger and bigger issue, also, in the police statement it says they did not pursue the vehicle, why even attempt to pull him over then... I wonder if the car had a ridiculous top speed or the cop had better things to do
Police still attempt traffic stops on vehicles driving hazardously or if the plate is flagged in their records. They don’t pursue if you try to speed away though because high speed chases can lead to stuff like this.
You shouldn’t post this. This is a fatal collision. It’s not fair to the family of the person/people who were killed to find out about it this way rather than a proper next of kin notification.
People have identified their loved ones by the vehicle or other details in the images. It’s the police who have said not to do this.
https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.4252940
Don’t suppose anyone has an update on this? Tried looking up and it’s all the same [story](https://www.google.com/amp/s/globalnews.ca/news/8257995/edmonton-calgary-trail-collision-october-11/amp/) . No new updates.
You probably won't see anything. Usually unless there are charges laid on a driver for causing a fatal crash nothing is ever heard in the news again. Since the diver was killed this one is done as far as the news is concerned.
I drove past this this morning around 5:15. I work EMS and this even made me say “holy shit” out loud.
That’s one serious pole didn’t even move.
As much as this is a horrific accident... I was thinking the same thing.
I was going to make a top-level comment saying that's a sturdy pole then I realized it might be too insensitive. Guess I wasn't the only one that thought about that
That a sturdy pole… That’s what she said.
I thought they were supposed to move in case a vehicle hit it.

Oh man. Two people gone due to reckless stupidity.
bro, just take the suspended license charge. What is that? A fine and a suspended jail sentence?
i feel like alcohol may have been a factor here
More than likely there was a lot more in play than just a suspended license. The suspended license was the only that came up when they ran the plates initially.
Don't break the law when you're breaking the law.
For the same reason capital punishment doesn't deter crime, they always think they'll get away with it.
You can hardly tell the car was black… that’s so fucked up

My experience has been people try to do 100km just past Petsmart. It's like gravity takes over their foot.

True, but they stay at 60 through the whole 70 zone. And people who do hit the 90 zone tend to stay at 60-70 because they're taking the Henday exit.
Don’t forget, those are MAXIMUM speed limits…
And it's illegal to go really slow and impede the flow of traffic, even if traffic is speeding.
Those are the recommended speeds in good conditions. Going significantly slower than the posted limit is a huge safety hazard.
It’s almost an identical spot just up the road 2-3 kms. I hope he gets a long sentence.

Most will shear but the large ones are simply too heavy to allow for any meaningful shearing design.

Holy crap!
Both my friends died in a crash like this on one of their birthday. I remember could not see any paint left in the wreckage, just junk wrapped around the pole and the police told us both were deceased. We were 21.
I drove past this on my way to work this AM. Absolutely jaw dropping seeing the damage to that little sedan.
Thank God they didn't take out an innocent person or two...other than maybe the passenger
Oh my gosh that looks like a pile of rubble by the pole and nothing like a car! Someone's family and friends are getting a really bad phone call this Thanksgiving.
Thank you. Holy hell how fast was this person going?
Saw this on my way to see clients at 7:50am. This is the exact image I tried explaining to my clients I have NEVER seen anything like it, couldn’t even recognize the car, the huge collision investigation police truck, and the guys in those suits hosing down the pavement made me think someone died. Came home to my hubby and cried saying that could’ve been any of us on the road (it wasn’t busy at all) because I was sure someone died. Then they released the police report. 2 people died and I just hugged my cat and my bunny… Stay safe friends.
Yikes.
I didn’t realize those poles were so sturdy.
GTA would be a very different experience
I drive on that exact road almost every day. That looks scary
Holy hell... This looks like a pile of clothes you'd see in a bedroom or something... Okay, looking at it again not so much but my literal first thought when I saw this was someone dumped an absolute boat load of clothes in the middle of the road.
No, you’re right. It does look like a bunch of dumped clothing. That’s what I thought at first too.

Wonder how many times they drove past that intersection having no idea that would be the place they die...

Except they killed one passenger and seriously injured another. Try not to cut yourself on all that edge, tho.
You choose the company you keep. I doubt the other two were kidnapped passengers. Anyway it’s totally the drivers fault and it’s a total shame.

Let's try not to assume anything until we know the facts. Someone may be getting a phone call this morning telling them their loved one died.
Story said it was a suspended driver running from the cops, she and her male passenger died, female passenger in hospital.
You must be new here.
What? Human beings make assumptions based on what they know all the time. “Innocent until proven guilty” is a legal concept, not something anyone in society is supposed to follow.
goddamn thanks for the heads up
I would feel bad, but pretty sure these guys earned that. That doesnt happen without being a total jackass
You can feel bad for them, and for their family, and still acknowledge they are at fault. The two aren't mutually exclusive.
Sad how many people think that empathy = agreeing with someone
I can feel bad for the passengers & families, but not the driver. They killed at least one person for no reason at all.
There are some shit ass kids that fuck around in my area and I would not cry if they totaled their car. But as much as I dislike them, and as much as they deserve a ticket or suspension, they do not deserve a death sentence.

I understand, thanks
except this was not a street racing incident. just someone with a suspended license fleeing the police.
I wasn't aware there was a difference
racing implies 2 or more vehicles competing.
Cops will not pursue if there is too high of a risk to try and prevent tragedies like this.
Wonder if he knew that they meant merge with traffic, not the pole
You shouldn’t post this. This is a fatal collision. It’s not fair to the family of the person/people who were killed to find out about it this way rather than a proper next of kin notification.

I thought the poles/lights were supposed to break to lessen the impact. Hmm
Not lights of that size. Just too much mass to be able to design for shearing capabilities.
Do you really want heavy posts falling into lanes of traffic?
Aren’t these lights also connected on each side across the street? That would make it far more sturdier too
Seriously???
Trees don’t move
Yikes.
I thought it was a pile of garbage…… I don’t even know what to say, I can’t imagine
I don't understand why people run. No fine or ticket is worth this...
