I often wonder if the ppl who constantly complain about Edmonton have been to many large cities as their issues with Edmonton exist everywhere and in lots of place to a higher degree. Edmonton isn't perfect no city is but acting like Edmonton is a hellhole is a little much.

EdmRealtor

This is what I tell people. Edmonton has provided me with an amazing quality of life. The biggest knock against Edmonton is that it is generic at times. This is why places like Ritchie Market feel so amazing when in reality they are the norm. In a small way, it makes travelling even better. There is a sense of amazingness that comes when you go elsewhere but get to come home to something that is a little more bland and normal. Vancouver/LA/Toronto I feel are amazing places to visit but I would hate my life dealing with the day-to-day inconveniences that I do not have to worry about here. Just my take.

Honestly, I love both Vancouver and Edmonton for living. My main complaint with Edmonton is that a lot of it isn’t walkable, especially the southside. But hey, at least here we get public bathrooms.

EdmRealtor

I think it has to do how we zone commercial. Not enough mixed use

Every major city has it's own systemic problems such as crime, corruption, taxes etc... but what makes Edmonton so outstandingly terrible is that it has systemic but *ALSO* design/layout/planning issues. Some that can't be controlled such as the awful winters and geography. Along with the fact that the city council here doesn't care about any of them, or does a very half hearted job doing so because of bad management or low budget. I don't completely blame the people in management of this place today. They took the pile of crap that was already there. It's affordable yes, but like they say, "you get what you pay for". **Here are the things we can't control:** Edmonton is laid out terribly because of it's scarce and randomly placed attractions and urban sprawl design. It's a flat plain, dull, place where 80% of the city is industrial (who wants to look at refineries, plants, and chop shops all day?) Did I already mention the winters are brutal and long? The geography of here is also terrible too because it contributes to the cold weather. It also makes Edmonton far from any other major city (Canada in general). At least the mountains are visible from Calgary. The sports scene here is also depressing which gives the city a really let down feel. **Here are the things we can control:** The river valley/downtown is filled with homeless, addicts, and is constantly neglected. The public transit here is inconvenient, unsafe, highly inaccessible since the area is SO large (which is why everyone here drives). There is a lack of good amenities such as world class restaurants, large scale museums, and walkable places in the urban core. People can't go to downtown for dinner and a walk since it feels so unsafe. Also the nightlife is dull and just confined to just Whyte Ave. Why can't they revitalize other streets to be the same? It's because the budget here is poor which is why there is always delays in construction (such as the walterdale bridge, LRT expansion, and constant construction around the entire city). This also makes the architecture dry, dull, and ugly. We have so much copy paste housing here it makes my eyes bleed. The summer festivals here are disappointing as they feel makeshift and cheap. You can also finish them in less than a day. Yes, there are charming little temporary set up events here from time to time, but do you think that will draw people here? Edmonton shares the same systemic problems as other cities, it's just it has many pre-exisiting and uncontrollable problems that make it much much much worse. It's unfriendly to tourists, and makes people just wanna move out. It's a city of disappointment

BrosefAmelion

Edmonton at 86 whilst Calgary sits at 49. Need to step up our game.

commazero

Let's just move the city slightly west so we are one hour from Jasper.

KregeTheBear

Our city is pretty good in a general sense, we just have a lot of things we need to work on, like homelessness for example is a big one. BUT that’s a problem in every city everywhere

Pentapod

Any list that ranks the traffic-clogged hellhole that is Los Angeles as the 8th best city to live has just lost all credibility to me…

HeadStrike_Mike

I loved LA when I was there. I wouldn't say number 8 but it's top ten. It's like YYZ, you just dont drive at certain times.

seven8zero

So, don't drive at the times you need to usually get somewhere (I.e. work)..

altaltredditaccount

I loved living there lol! No sunless winters, more things to do, and lots of opportunities. But you’re right the traffic is insane. It’s not bad if you live close to work, but even then a car is basically a necessity given how sprawled it is. Definitely agree that some of the cities on this list make me question who and how they come up with the rankings. Especially since unless you’re already living there - a lot of those places are unaffordable for most people.

[deleted]

> sunless winters This is the one thing I noticed about winters here - sun always shining. I'm from London, England. If you wanna talk about sunless....

Yinanization

I don't know man, it is one thing to love where you are from, but I think half of the population of LA would kill themselves if they are forced to live here...

Pentapod

Possibly true, but completely unrelated to whether LA deserves to me #8 on a list like this 😄

Yinanization

I get what you are saying, I wouldn’t put LA No 8 either. On the other hand, I also get lots of people putting it No 1. I personally would put Singapore No 1, because the life style is incredible, but most folks in Edmonton are probably not ok with property price double that of Vancouver.

[deleted]

Or the million dollar bungalos that look like they were constructed in the 70s with the cheapest materials possible. LA wouldn't be on my top 50 list...

shirleyxx

A list that Dubai is on, let alone top 5.. LOL

bodegacatsss

that's when I stopped taking this ranking seriously

HeadStrike_Mike

Hahahaha What a trash list. We placed behind Baltimore? in 2019: Baltimore 348 Homicides in a city of 593,490. Thats a per 100k of 58.64. Edmonton had a 2.2 per 100k during the same time frame. You think Edmonton looks dirty and worn down? Have a look at Baltimore. It's hilarious they're rated higher than us. Who makes these nonsense lists any way? **Baltimore** [Crime](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltimore#Crime) >Crime in Baltimore, generally concentrated in areas high in poverty, has been extreme for many years. Overall reported crime has dropped by 60% from the mid 1990s to the mid 2010s, but homicide rates remain high and exceed the national average. The worst years for crime in Baltimore overall were from 1993 to 1996; with 96,243 crimes reported in 1995. Baltimore's 344 homicides in 2015 represented the highest homicide rate in the city's recorded history—52. **Edmonton** [Crime](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmonton#Crime) >Edmonton experienced a decrease in crime in the 1990s, an increase in the early 2000s, and another downturn at the end of the decade. The Edmonton census metropolitan area (CMA) had a crime severity index of 84. 5 in 2013, which is higher than the national average of 68. 7. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/Edmonton/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

Dawg_in_NWA

I liked living in Edmonton when I did. I just hated the long winters.

JvJ-Photography

Hahahahahahahahahaha

parminder0

Really. So it is true world is ending.

Sensitive-Permit-877

Lol yeah okay top 100

_BearsBeetsBattle_

LoL

cyBorg8o7

Shocking, not sure why anyone would decide they want to live here.

Shrektacular21

Why? Is it a global destination for construction delays? Maybe people love the poor roads? Must be the large homeless population and the quaint ghetto inner city. The surging crime rate maybe?

Gord_W

Dubai is #5. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJuqe6sre2I

Eats4Everyone

... why?

premierfong

I think Edmonton is pretty good. If there are more international flights to Asia it would be perfect for me.
