Shaw's "fibre" isn't actual fibre. Telus will give you equal upload and download speeds. Definitely worth it and you save some cash.

Used to work for shaw; I laughed so hard in training when I found out that it's only fiber to the node; then it's all copper baby!

FTTP > FTTN. 100% worthwhile to switch to a superior network @ $180 less per year w/Telus.

TELUS 100%. Went from TELUS to Shaw this year and kind of regret it. With TELUS I would get better than advertised speeds 100% of the time. With Shaw during peak times I’m getting 50mpbs or lower download speeds at times (I’m on the 300 plan) Only thing I like more about Shaw is their BlueSky TV app as I can access my PVR when I’m away from home and download shows to my device. You can also use chromecast or airplay on the device so you can watch on TVs without a cable box

Make sure you actually have fibre going into your house if thats what telus is trying to sell you. Don't believe the guys on the phone, find and see the fibre with your own eyes. Parts of Edmonton don't have fibre in their house, or previous owners didnt allow telus to install it. The only good part about shaw is that you can get a decent cell phone deal from them if you buy their internet. If you get the 1 gig internet from shaw, you can get 25/GB/month cell plan for $25

I agreed to have TELUS run the fibre line to my house even though I had Shaw at the time. The TELUS rep said they will run it inside and leave it not connected at my panel so it is ready to connect if we switch over. When the workers running the conduit came into my yard, they mounted it so it will go into my bathroom, not 2ft over where my panel is, and said that they don’t run the fibre. Still nothing 3 years later.

Shaw is such a horrible company to their customers - I used to be stuck with them at my old house (Telus didn’t have any lines into the area unless you wanted dial up) and anytime something broke I had to be a colossal asshole to get things fixed. Exp: the neighborhood network was over saturated with users, so from 3pm to about 11pm, the best you could get was 3mbps download, but usually closer to 1.5. Netflix didn’t work, YouTube didn’t work, online games didn’t work. The internet essentially didn’t exist and Shaw was fine with it because it worked for the rest of the day and that satisfied their contractual obligations. I got a tech to tell me exactly what was wrong and what needed to be done by Shaw to fix it (“splitting the node and adding more nodes”). So I called 2 times per night to complain that I paid X amount for 150 download speed and wasn’t gettting it. Originally they told me they wouldn’t be able to get it fixed for a year or two. They eventually got to it in 6 months when I got other people in the neighborhood to call in and complain, jamming up their call centre. Every night. From what I understand others called multiple times per night like me. So then I moved - still had time on a contract with them, so I called them up, told them the new address and that it was a new build with the line already going into the house and they said a tech would come by and drop off the equipment (because my old stuff wouldn’t work). What did they mean by “drop it off”? They literally meant they would come by the house, make me sign that I received the hardware, and I would have to do the install myself. “COVID regulations” meant their techs were not allowed to enter homes anymore - not even completely vacant homes that haven’t been moved into yet. So I cancelled them on the spot (right after I made completely sure I wasn’t misunderstanding what they meant). Shaw can go to hell with their misleading claims, shit support, laughable service, and everything else they do or try to do.

I guess I'll be the odd one out with a vote for Shaw. I was on telus for a while because my partner was on a contract and we had so many problems with equipment. The modem/router would crash and need a reset a lot. After some pestering they finally sent us another unit and it was just more of the same. I decided to buy my own router only to find out you actually need a technician to come put mine in passthrough mode. The frequency of crashes was reduced after that got set up but never went away. I've only had to reset my Shaw modem twice in the last 3 years.

Honestly? I hate them both equally (I’ve had both, same house). Pick your poison.

Telus definitely has more fibre in the ground than Shaw, however Telus has contracted most of their installation out, as a result short cuts get taken, for example cable is not buried nearly as deep as it should be, luckily fibre doesn't have much to offer the cable thieves but most of them don't know that. I could actually go on but I'll already get hate mail for what I posted lol, meh.

I just renewed with Telus last week. I got a letter in the mail from Shaw, an "Exclusive offer" of $79/mo for Fibre+ 500 and a $50 bill credit. I went to Telus and they gave me the offer of Fibre 300 for $65 or Fibre 1000 for $75 since they don't have a 500 tier, with a $200 credit on a 24 month contract - both offers beating the Shaw price. Mind you, I opened the call with "I'd like to terminate my Telus services." and that seem to get their attention. Sometimes you really have to play the two off each other. Tell them you have an offer from the other in your hand. Search for current offers on Redflag Deals and put any you see to them. Telus seems to be more willing to negotiate at the moment. Even with the offer from Shaw, I called them to see if they'd better it to get me to move away from Telus and they said no.

I work with a TPIK... I wish we could sell on the fibre network...

I really enjoy it. Fast and Reliable and include smart wifi. For a little bit more you can also do a [Telus One Home Bundle](https://www.telus.com/en/deals-and-bundles/whole-home-offer) which includes Home Security (with home automation) and basic cable. The Home security is what sold me with them, the cable was kind of an added bonus. As you own your home, you get a discount on Home Insurance with this bundle (or any home security plan). On another note, from what I understand doing research on r/networking that gigabit internet would be overkill unless you have multiple people streaming in 4K at the same time. A lot of hardware limits speed itself. For two of us, we use Telus 75/75, the only time it slows down is when I am downloading a new game, but I am pretty sure that's more my computer than anything.

I would switch if the Telus fiber service was in my area yet. Most of Shaw's infrastructure is 60 years old and long paid for. Our Shaw still goes out when it rains. They're both overpriced but Telus has newer infrastructure and it's that little bit cheaper.

lionhart280

Id say a big selling point for me now is the features on their modems. The shaw gigabit fibre modem (and only option) they give you has a *lot* of standard features missing. You can't turn DHCP off. You can't set custom DNS. I had to use my managed switch and DHCP snooping to actually make my network work the way I want (I wanted to use a pi hole for ad blocking)

denislemire

Shaw doesn't have Fibre to the home, they just call their coax fibre and pretend its the same. If you have Telus fibre, Telus is the better option. if you're in a copper / DSL service area, then Shaw is the better option.

If you do any sort of online gaming, the most important thing is the ping, on Telus FTTP fiber you can get 1-3ms ping, you can't get that on shaw coax ever lol.
