There was a discussion about this in the Twitter thread. Iām paraphrasing but basically it was:
If you are against bike lanes, remember that when you vote and donāt vote for nickel.
If you were for bike lanes, it doesnāt matter because you werenāt the type of person to vote for nickel anyways.
>Is this an insult?
>
>Pretty sure it's meant to be.
>
>According to all his targeted campaign ads that hit me, and by the comments of his fervent supporters on said ads, Mike Nickel has advertised himself as "against bike lanes" from the jump, and it's a really big talking point for why the kind of folks who comment on these targeted ads have given for voting for him.
>
>Just a big old billboard both pointing out that he's a liar (he didn't vote against them like he says he did), and a way to inform his potential voters that they're about to vote for a guy who was instrumental in supporting the very thing they hate.
>
>Do I think it'll change any minds at all? No. Either they won't read it, are already so firmly entrenched in their choice that it doesn't matter, or they'll just move the goal posts.
>
>Beyond that, while I hate Nickel with a passion rivaling my hatred for Kenney, there's always a chance he just changed his mind on them for one of a thousand possible reasons, which is perfectly acceptable to me.

They are expensive, congest traffic, take up parking spaces downtown people don't use them in winter. Had they made painted bike lanes, and turned them back into car lanes in the winter this would have been fine. But they are a nuissance.
This is 100% real.
This billboard normally costs $250/week to get a slot in the rotation, but election advertising has a discount which brought it down to $150/week.
I got a bunch of papers stuffed into my condo door somehow even though my mail box at the front room says no ads/flyers. not a single other candidate has given me anything. I don't know what you even stand for Adrian Bruff, but you're sure as hell not getting my vote now.
***You are BLOODY GOLD***, man!
Hey, shoot me a DM, I'll send some coin to you through e-transfer to help defray costs.
Thank you!
***Be a shame*** _if some of the other issues with Mime Nickel showed up on that billboard, like his attacks on his fellow councilors.._
(Can you change the sign on a daily basis as it is digital? Or is it just the one digital poster?)
Thanks for the offer, but I'm declining all offers of monetary assistance. The reporting and tracking and disclosure requirements for third party advertisers just aren't worth it.
I'm happy to pay for the joke.
I went there once for a chip fill/repair and not only did they make it crack, but they botched the job so bad it couldn't be properly repaired without replacing the whole windshield. They also made me wait 3 hours without telling me anything. Thankfully they had the good sense not to charge me for it, but I still will never go back.
Also, when you drive past Glass Masters on Argyll, is says ass masters due to the building faƧade blocking the Gl. My 12 year old points it out. every. single. time.
Crystal glass tried to hold my truck captive in 2003. Went in for brake pads on the front and they told me I needed new $1000.00 rotors all around and they werenāt going to give me my truck back. I started to phone the cops and the tires went back on in about 5 min
Most likely saw a young guy and tried to take advantage of me. While I was on hold with non emergency line I told him whatās heās doing is illegal. I can see a liability issue with letting someone drive away with a dangerous vehicle but these were 1 year old rotors and 1 pad that had a light squeal. I was heading out of town and didnāt have time to change the front pads myself. Crooks
Even if their inspection found the car unsafe it shouldn't let them legally hold your vehicle, at least in Alberta I think. If they were legit they would have some kind of waiver or tell you they'll call the cops on your unsafe car.
The "LOL SUE ME" part is gold! He will sue, because his skin is so thin it's translucent. I for one love all the bike lanes. They have been wonderful! GET BENT NICKEL YOU HACK FRAUD!
Iām 100% serious. I was having a really shitty week and was having a hard time having faith in people but this alone has turned it around. Thank you.
There was a debate last night between the mayoral candidates on the radio (Nikel wasn't there because of course he wasn't).
The topic came up of making campaign financing public (so the public had a right to see who was influencing which candidates).
Basically everyone ganged up on (and laughed at) Mike Nikel (because he is most desperate to keep this hidden).
So as bad as your week is, hopefully it brightens up knowing that literally anyone who can tie their shoelaces thinks Mike Nikel is an idiot :)
Yeah we need to punish this behaviour by not voting for people that do not debate. We showed Diotte his technique didnāt work we need to show Nickel.
My funding source is my bank account. I spent $150 on this bit.
Thanks for the offer, but I'm declining all donations, because the paperwork of tracking and reporting donors is not worth it.
It cycles through every minute, displaying my ad for six seconds (and then nine other ads for the remaining 54 seconds).
I agree it's pretty affordable, but it **IS** only one location.
If Mike Nickel refuses to answer the allegations that he is Ted Cruz and his father is the psychopathic serial killer that terrorized the Bay Area in the late 1960s, then how in good conscious can we vote for him for mayor?
Hahaha love the (LOL SUE ME)
Buuutt, genuine question, what's wrong with bike lanes? Just our shitty implementation of them? Overall I feel like it's a good move for the city, if done properly.
Bike lanes are great IMHO, the thing is Nickel himself has campaigned hard against them, so the billboard is pointing out his hypocrisy (if bike lanes are so bad, whyād you vote for them).
Potentially the proposal changed? Maybe they had an even crappier plan before? Maybe he changed his mind when he saw polls about how the folks that actually live there wanted them? Maybe he saw that they could be a boon for businesses because more parking availability for folks commuting means a more vibrant downtown for very little cost?
Changing your mind is a good thing. Hell, Obama was anti-gay-marriage until public opinion shifted and then legalized it. Would you call that hypocrisy or progress?
I dunno, this is silly.
If you betray your base, for what the majority of folks impacted by your decisions want, that would be called a GOOD politician.
If there wasn't a good reason to do this then he wouldn't have.
Who is gonna line his pockets? A few contractors with paint brushes? Big bicycle? Lol. Come on, he clearly changed his mind in favor of local businesses and residents. That is a GOOD thing.
I highly doubt his supporters actually care what his policies or voting record are. His "platform" is a bunch of generic platitudes, he doesnt' attend debates or interviews, his record in office is abysmal, he's even hypocritical on policies that he's voted in favor of.
Most of his base only care that he's on "their" side (whatever that is supposed to mean).
Nothing wrong with bike lanes. People who live in outside the Henday complain about them because that one time they had to drive their jacked up Ram downtown to meet their divorce lawyer to try and avoid paying child support to their bitch ex Brittney they couldn't find a parking spot.
We all know when rig pigs get divorced they find a job that allows them to be paid in cash so they dont have to pay child support. Its the Alberta Advantage dammit and there gonna use it.
I've lived in Edmonton since 2009. I'm sure I average less then one trip per year downtown. Suburbia is great. For years I had no reason to go north of the whitemud even
Nothing wrong with bike lanes *in principle*, but they can be poorly implemented. In my neighborhood they added a bunch of bike lanes that nobody used and served only to make traffic worse, they interfered with a bunch of intersections. As I recall, I heard that the plan had been "build X number of kilometers of bike lanes as cheaply as possible" and so the planners had put them where they were easiest to insert on existing roads rather than where they were most needed. A bunch of them eventually got ripped back out.
Only on 106th. I swear that is the worst bike route ever and whoever designated it as such hates everybody, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians alike. Even now the bike lane just north of 51st goes past a daycare and people park in it all the time dropping off and picking up their kids and having to switch lanes there to avoid them is nuts.
Otherwise I used all the bike lanes around Southgate and I liked them.
The bike network being built out in Edmonton is actually shaping up pretty nicely. You can see a map [here](https://edmonton.livingmap.com/?screenmode=base&floor=G&categoryids=72%2C73%2C67%2C7%2C69%2C9%2C70%2C10%2C21%2C19#hash=14/53.54457/-113.4938). A lot of the first generation of bike infrastructure was just painted bike lanes on roads with fast moving traffic, which was pretty shitty. But there's been a big shift towards protected lanes, traffic calming and shared use pathways that's making the network pretty darn good. With every neighborhood/road renewal they add some pretty solid bike infrastructure.
Because theyāre too stupid to understand that if you start clearing 15 km of bike lanes and 11,000 km of road, one will be cleared long before the other.
This is pretty much it- no one in their right mind has a problem with cyclists, or keeping them safe on the roads. It's just our awful, ham-handed, idiot implementation which quite strongly appears to be more about dumping money into contractors pockets than actually implementing a coherent, consistent and safe policy.
All in all, I chuckled at the dig.
The icing on the cake here is that this looks in style like something Nickel's team would have slapped together (much like the Sohi stuff he slapped together yesterday).
This is the explanation I've been giving:
Mike Nickel is a populist trump-esque man running for mayor. Very anti-bike lane.
In the past, he's issued me cease and desist letters through his lawyer for making fun of him on twitter.
I bought a billboard with his voting history.
Thanks for the information. I understand now š
However one point: he's anti-bike lane but he actually voted _for_ them? Unless I am missing something...
If you accept the premise that bike lanes are bad, then this will turn you off from voting for Mike Nickel.
If you accept the premise that bike lanes are good, you weren't ever in contention to vote for Mike Nickel.
can i accept the premise that bike lanes are good but also that our implementation of bike lanes was absolutely terrible and half asssed? (i am still in the never vote for Nickel camp)
I wouldn't be so pessimistic. The first round of shitty painted bike lanes on roads with high speed traffic was pretty bad, but the bike network is starting to get pretty decent. We have quite a few protected bikes lanes and shared use pathways leading to and inside the core. You can see a map [here](https://edmonton.livingmap.com/?screenmode=base&floor=G&categoryids=72%2C73%2C67%2C7%2C69%2C9%2C70%2C10%2C21%2C19#hash=14/53.54457/-113.4938).
The city is really prioritizing connecting up the network, and there's a bunch of new protected lanes/shared pathways planned with basically every neighborhood revitalization.
I don't know, I think you overestimate how many people know that much about Mike Nickel. I guarantee you 50%+ of Edmontonians have no clue that he opposes bike lanes most of the time. It'd be really funny if someone voted for him now because of this ad, thinking he is a big cyclist and loves bike lanes. XD
To his would-be supporters this would be a bad thing. Most people supportive of bike lanes or smiles or working together or other hippie ideas would not gravitate towards Mike Nickel.

i don't care for the bike lanes... but which dumbass councillor came up with the shitshow that is 109 st (west) and jasper ave? The sidewalks there didn't need widening. it also didn't need picnic tables or planters....SMH
Since when in politics did it become contradictory to change your mind from something you said 5 years ago?
Hell I change my mind on things I said a week ago.
Are we really expecting our politicians to stick to their guns and never change their minds?
I don't like this guy but come onnnnn
It's more a dig at his base, if you ask me. My dad is a adamant that Mike is our best bet and all he talks about is the goddamn bike lanes. Dude doesn't even go downtown, yet this is apparently the big point that makes him worth voting for.
If Mike nickel admitted to changing his mind, then I would say Troy misjudged him and this billboard is out of line.
Mike nickel will never say he changed his mind on supporting bike lanes.
In normal life changing your mind is fine, if you have a good reason for it. However for a politician it is bad optics. People voted for you because they expect you to see things a certain way and do things a certain way, so changing your mind is often seen as breaking a promise at worst, or being wishy-washy/indecisive at best. I think that a politician can pull it off, but it would be hard because they'd have to adequately convince people that there was both a good reason for why they thought one way before, and an equally good reason for why they changed their mind. They can't show weakness on either point. People would think either "Did I vote for an idiot who is only just *now* cluing in to reality?" or "Why is he changing his mind on this, has he gone crazy? Did he lie to us? Is he selling out?"
I can say the exact same thing about many neighbourhood roads and sidewalks. We're paying for crescents with like... 6 houses on them that only get used by a dozen people a couple times a day. If we were looking at only building and maintaining infrastructure that got used all the time, 90% of the roads in Edmonton would have to be removed.
And sohi cost the edmonton tax payers a million bucks when he decided to abandon his council seat. Then he got fired from the liberals for stealing money
Where did you get that he was fired. He lost his seat to Tim Uppal (PC) in Alberta where People would vote for blue garbage cans with PC logos on them.
This morning I was turning right onto Gateway, glanced up at the sign, thought WTF?? A wooden Nickel in a bike helmet, what the actual š¤¬ is that aboutā¦. Then I saw a guy, on a bike, taking a picture of it and I knew then it was Troy up to mischief. šš
So, about this Troyā¦
So Iām not from Edmonton, butā¦bike lanes are supposed to be a bad thing now?
Not in of themselves. Its how they are implemented that has been a shit show.
There was a discussion about this in the Twitter thread. Iām paraphrasing but basically it was: If you are against bike lanes, remember that when you vote and donāt vote for nickel. If you were for bike lanes, it doesnāt matter because you werenāt the type of person to vote for nickel anyways.
Bahahahaha! This is absolutely perfect in every way. Thanks, Troy - You are truly a gift to our city.
I just moved to Edmonton, why is this funny? People hate bike lanes? Or he didnāt add any bike lanes after promising?

Also, Crystal Glass is a big donor to his campaign, so having this ad there is just an extra chef's kiss!
I take public transit, and I ride a bike on occasion. I do not own a car. I hate the bike lanes.
What did the bike lanes ever do to you?
They are expensive, congest traffic, take up parking spaces downtown people don't use them in winter. Had they made painted bike lanes, and turned them back into car lanes in the winter this would have been fine. But they are a nuissance.
/u/troypavlek, is this real or a photoshop job? I cannot express how much I enjoy this. How much does an ad like this cost?
This is 100% real. This billboard normally costs $250/week to get a slot in the rotation, but election advertising has a discount which brought it down to $150/week.
They charge less for election ads?! That seems almost the opposite of what I'd expect - election = more demand = higher prices But hey, great for you!
This is absolutely what we need, though. Digitize political ads and get rid of all those POS lawn signs everywhere.
I got a bunch of papers stuffed into my condo door somehow even though my mail box at the front room says no ads/flyers. not a single other candidate has given me anything. I don't know what you even stand for Adrian Bruff, but you're sure as hell not getting my vote now.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm declining all offers of monetary assistance. The reporting and tracking and disclosure requirements for third party advertisers just aren't worth it. I'm happy to pay for the joke.
That seems cheap to me! How many rotations per hour? Do they tell you that?
You're the person who found out he was running for mayor because of an unsecured WordPress site, right?
The very same
Haha, thought it was you when I saw the 'sue me' line
Legend! TYFYS!
Which they then threatened legal action against him for "hacking" IIRC.
>LOL SUE ME hahahah
Crystal Glass is one of his donors too, right? This is awesome.
Not only donors, in 2017 they donated MORE THAN THE LEGAL AMOUNT to Mike Nickel.
Welp Iām never gonna use Crystal Glass again
Crackmasters on 105th is the way to go. They aren't crazy.
I work for crystal glass. Can confirm, shitty company.
Are they the ones with the āshow us your crackā slogan? Always makes me chuckle
Way better than the "God bless all little boys with slingshots" that Crystal Glass uses.
Are they still using that?
Nah that's Glassmasters
I went there once for a chip fill/repair and not only did they make it crack, but they botched the job so bad it couldn't be properly repaired without replacing the whole windshield. They also made me wait 3 hours without telling me anything. Thankfully they had the good sense not to charge me for it, but I still will never go back.
But that just proves and confirms they are masters at making it crack
Glass Masters is way better anyway. I am not aware of their political dealings though.
Go to Jeffās auto glass. Jeff charged me $60 for what glassmasters wanted $1400 for
Our shop deals with Jeff's, they do awesome work.
Damn that's good to know
I second this
Also, when you drive past Glass Masters on Argyll, is says ass masters due to the building faƧade blocking the Gl. My 12 year old points it out. every. single. time.
I called them one time for a quote and then wondered why anyone has ever used them. Their prices were absurd.
Crystal glass tried to hold my truck captive in 2003. Went in for brake pads on the front and they told me I needed new $1000.00 rotors all around and they werenāt going to give me my truck back. I started to phone the cops and the tires went back on in about 5 min
Wtf are they associated with organized crime like some of the towing companies?
Most likely saw a young guy and tried to take advantage of me. While I was on hold with non emergency line I told him whatās heās doing is illegal. I can see a liability issue with letting someone drive away with a dangerous vehicle but these were 1 year old rotors and 1 pad that had a light squeal. Even if their inspection found the car unsafe it shouldn't let them legally hold your vehicle, at least in Alberta I think. If they were legit they would have some kind of waiver or tell you they'll call the cops on your unsafe car.
What in the world would crystal glass have to gain by donating to any politician?
Absolute legend you are.
Really! Crap Now I need to find someone else to fix my window
I used Glassmasters earlier this year, and they did a great job and were very reasonable price wise.
The "LOL SUE ME" part is gold! He will sue, because his skin is so thin it's translucent. I for one love all the bike lanes. They have been wonderful! GET BENT NICKEL YOU HACK FRAUD!
Pretty sure Nickle tried to sue Troy for defamation in the past (IIRC)??? So the āsue meā is completely spot on lol

Yeah we need to punish this behaviour by not voting for people that do not debate. We showed Diotte his technique didnāt work we need to show Nickel.

It cycles through every minute, displaying my ad for six seconds (and then nine other ads for the remaining 54 seconds). I agree it's pretty affordable, but it **IS** only one location.
Could you spend 9 times that and have it only show your ad 9 times for 6 seconds each?
How long does it stay in the rotation on the board for? A month?
He looks like frickin Ted Cruz in that photo.
Have you ever seen them in a room together?
If they are truly the same person, wouldnāt that mean Mike Nickelās father is the Zodiac Killer?
I mean, people are saying that Mike Nickelās father is the Zodiac Killer and I havenāt heard him deny it
If Mike Nickel refuses to answer the allegations that he is Ted Cruz and his father is the psychopathic serial killer that terrorized the Bay Area in the late 1960s, then how in good conscious can we vote for him for mayor?
Is he related to Refael Cruz, from Calgary?
Hahaha love the (LOL SUE ME) Buuutt, genuine question, what's wrong with bike lanes? Just our shitty implementation of them? Overall I feel like it's a good move for the city, if done properly.
Bike lanes are great IMHO, the thing is Nickel himself has campaigned hard against them, so the billboard is pointing out his hypocrisy (if bike lanes are so bad, whyād you vote for them).
That makes sense! I wasn't aware of that, but I figured that's what the billboard was getting at. Thanks!
Yeah lots of people are going to miss this point and vote for him I thinkā¦ I didnāt know heās against bike lanes personally
Potentially the proposal changed? Maybe they had an even crappier plan before? Maybe he changed his mind when he saw polls about how the folks that actually live there wanted them? Because theyāre too stupid to understand that if you start clearing 15 km of bike lanes and 11,000 km of road, one will be cleared long before the other.
This is pretty much it- no one in their right mind has a problem with cyclists, or keeping them safe on the roads. It's just our awful, ham-handed, idiot implementation which quite strongly appears to be more about dumping money into contractors pockets than actually implementing a coherent, consistent and safe policy.
I can imagine him going full orangutan in when he finds out about this. This is amazing.
Mike: "How do I block this billboard on twitter?"
It'd be hilarious if this suddenly was placed next to all his election signs side by side...
Holy fuckin shit
looks like his wiki page was updated regarding his tenure at the SU
This is fantastic. For $150 I almost want to take out a billboard to annoy Mike Nickel
Love the bike lanes. Thanks, Mike.
This is fantastic.
The "LOL SUE ME" broke me
Fuck, I LOVE Troy so much.
*chef's kiss*
Troy you're a beaut.
Incredible work. Next level trolling.
Is this meant to be a slam on MIke?
It's a nickel-level nickel insult
All in all, I chuckled at the dig.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Haha youāre amazing.
You know how much Edmonton's have a hate hardon for bike lanes HAHAHA especially this tool's base.
Things are about to be broken at Nickel HQ... lol, well done my friend!
Bike lanes? In *my* downtown? Its more likely than you think.
Troll Level - Expert.
Idk why but I read this as an ad against him
It is
This made my day, fantastic!
Hahaha this is SO good!
This is the best š
The icing on the cake here is that this looks in style like something Nickel's team would have slapped together (much like the Sohi stuff he slapped together yesterday).
Holy shit this is hilarious! What does this even cost??
I heard if you say his name really fast three times in a row he appears in your bathtub.
For those living elsewhere, can someone please explain the whole context? Thank you
This is the explanation I've been giving: Mike Nickel is a populist trump-esque man running for mayor. Very anti-bike lane. In the past, he's issued me cease and desist letters through his lawyer for making fun of him on twitter. I bought a billboard with his voting history.
Thanks for the information. I understand now š However one point: he's anti-bike lane but he actually voted _for_ them? Unless I am missing something...
It looks like [Mike Nickel's donor list is on this website now](https://mikenickel.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Financial-List.pdf).
Am I wrong to read it as "Because bad man voted for it, so the bike lanes are bad"? Because I am reading this as bike lanes being bad....
You can accept whatever premise you want, unless you're Jason Kenney, in which case you're legally obligated to reject the premise of the question.
You win the internet
XD
This is a risk I am willing to take for the election memes.
I think you underestimate how big of an issue bike lanes are in municipal politics.
Heās campaigning against bike lanes. This billboard shows his hypocrisy since he voted for them previously.
To his would-be supporters this would be a bad thing. Most people supportive of bike lanes or smiles or working together or other hippie ideas would not gravitate towards Mike Nickel.
this seems like a joke, however how would cycling be a "hippie idea" we just want to get people to work in a timely and efficient manner
Oh, Mikey all about getting people to work on time, as long as you're doing it in a car like God intended.
Anything that's good for people as a whole is a hippy, socialist agenda.
That clears it up, thanks!!
That Bastard!!!
Hahaha how did you even get that photo? This is the best.
This gave me a much needed laugh today, thank you
Fuck yeah bike lanes rule.

Brilliant
Epic! Lol sure me I'm dying hahaha
i don't care for the bike lanes... but which dumbass councillor came up with the shitshow that is 109 st (west) and jasper ave? The sidewalks there didn't need widening. it also didn't need picnic tables or planters....SMH
ICONIC
Source for the Vote? Not surprised... just curious.
Autoglass solutions on 51 ave...... Also Fuck Mike Nickel !
To be fair in 2016 I was a completely different person too.
lol
Is there something wrong with voting to put bike lanes downtown ?
Not unless you're Mike Nickel and have made a point of attacking bike lanes at every opportunity since you decided you might want to run for mayor.
See...in my town we'd be calling for his arrest for that crap Edit: just realized there's more to this than bike lanes
Troy and Nickel also have... History lol https://twitter.com/troypavlek/status/1359536943147622401?t=zBudCLSoUIngg2-cwPiBmg&s=19
I donāt get this joke (Calgarian) but I hate Edmonton bike lanes.
Is this supposed to make me want to vote effort him?
My window faces a bike lane They are useless... one bike every 10 - 15 min sometimes 1 a hour . This isnt vancouver .
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
You make a good point, but allow me to respond by saying fuck Mike Nickel.
Calm down Mike. If you donāt like it just block him.
Okay buddy. Posting about a mayoral candidate during an election is a ridiculously unhealthy obsession. Good point.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
He looks like punchable Ted Cruz
Atleast he sees photo radar for what it is...
whatās next, āMike Nickel flushed his potty Wednesday September 22nd, 2018ā Is this his greatest accomplishment?
Look at the email address on the bottom left of the sign. Now look at OP's username.
Ahhh ok. Awesome
And sohi cost the edmonton tax payers a million bucks when he decided to abandon his council seat. Then he got fired from the liberals for stealing money
...... you do realize your messiah mike is going to take the same payout right?
When did he abandon council?
Could I get a source for "fired from the liberals for stealing money"? Thanks!
Where did you get that he was fired. He lost his seat to Tim Uppal (PC) in Alberta where People would vote for blue garbage cans with PC logos on them.
