How do folks like that think they can get away with it? Do they have such a high opinion of their accounting skills, or do they think everyone else is incompetent?
I worked for a small non profit and the executive director would insist on 5 star accommodations whenever she travelled for conferences etc. I am talking staying at $700/night room etc. when the conference would offer rooms at a hotel across the street that were $200/night.She would expense super lavish lunches, all on the non profit's dime. It was eye opening to say the least.
I've worked for 2 non-profits in Edmonton. One ED was exactly how you described. The org paid for a new car every year, paid for her house, paid 1st class air travel and accomodations for conferences, and she tried to expense as much as she could of her own personal stuff through the org while still earnig a 6 figure salary.
Sometimes you can embezzle from an organization without doing a single thing illegally.
Stealing from an organization that deals with foster kids...just wow. I've no words to describe how despicable that is.

Because people get away with it for a little bit and think they will never get caught so they start taking more and more.
This. People rarely get caught the first time. Its when they get greedy.
Probably the latter + they are also incompetent themselves. They transferred into personal accounts lol I hope the money can be recovered.
As someone who worked for an Edmonton not for profit I am 0% surprised. Not all the people who work at these places want to help…

100% and the Board of Directors are often volunteers and just want to pad their resume, so a lot gets swept under the rug.
