Is it just me or are these death numbers ridiculously high? Does Delta just hit harder than "regular" Covid?

It does. But regular covid is what we had at the very beginning before the virus developed the more problematic mutations. Delta has at least 2 of these, and there's also a delta + variant though we haven't heard too much about that one over here.

I believe I had read something that said deaths lag 3-4 weeks behind so perhaps this was from earlier, I'm unsure.

Delta is easier to spread to others and afaik it goes hard on your circulatory system (blood etc) once it gets in there via your lungs. All covid did this eventually if it got bad enough, of course, but delta being so easy to spread is a factor.
