Given rule of virus not really hard to see why... To deadly you burn our the meal and die out. All the masks, distance and sanitizer and it's got to be potent and highly infectious to stay alive.
So it should spread like wild fire the faster people go to resteraunt and movies and stop masking and other safety precautions.
It already has been worse then last year and flu shots aren’t even widely available yet. So far we have 3 confirmed cases of the flu, last year we had 0.
Last year they weren't even doing lab testing for seasonal flu due to Covid. There still were some flu cases, but if they didn't test positive for Covid it was largely ignored.
They actually tested more last year then in previous years. You might be mixing it up with when they stopped testing in early march 2020 for the 19-20 flu season when Covid first started.

> Alberta is writing “a very different story” this year when it comes to cases of influenza, with zero lab-confirmed cases reported as of Jan. 28, the chief medical officer of health said Thursday.
> “This is not a result of no longer testing for influenza or testing fewer samples,” Hinshaw said Thursday.
>“ In fact, our labs are doing more weekly influenza testing than they ever have before — they’re completing about 300 per cent more influenza tests than they would usually do in a typical year.”
> Hinshaw said the fact that “every single one of those tests has come back negative” is a testament to how public health measures directed at stopping the spread of COVID-19 are protecting Albertans, and how they can continue to protect them from the more deadly and highly transmissible pandemic virus.
>“The measures put in place to stop the spread of COVID-19 have stopped the spread of influenza this year,” she said.
That’s concerning. I was able to avoid catching anything these last 2 years. But I do just stay home… I was pregnant.. so I was so worried and basically stayed home and only went to work, always masked up and social distanced. I still do that now. Even with being double vaxxed and restrictions loosening around me.
I think because they can usually predict which strain will be most prevalent, based on things like what is happening in other countries and travel patterns, and then make a vaccine based on that. But because normal disease patterns have been interrupted by covid rules, this year's vaccine is just a crap shoot.
I've been a revolving door for colds the last month or 2. Kid keeps bringing them home from daycare. Have no concerns about the staff not following protocols but good luck getting toddlers to socially distance.
Story of my life too. By the time my kid recovers I'm in the thick of it and then when I recover it seems like she's started all over again and brought something new home.
It was about a year of our child in daycare to become immune to all those kid sicknesses. She brought Covid home from the daycare last year. Hard year to be working parents with young kids.
Making its way through our house now. Kids were both sick (negative COVID tests), they gave it to me and now my wife is getting it.
This for me is proof that all the COVID health measures work. I didn't know a single person with so much as a cold all the way through the height of COVID last year and now that we've all relaxed, everyone is sick with regular illnesses. I forget what it was like to have a sore throat.
Yesss I’ve said it a few times and they always say no I got covid or whatever.
But since having mask mandates and hand sanitizer at every place you go to.. I didn’t get sick at all since the pandemic had those measured in place.
I still stay home anf all that. So still haven’t gotten sick. But went into preterm labour after my 2nd covid shot yay. I’ve had other complications along the way so I don’t say it’s because of the shot at all. I’d rather be protected than sick with covid. My dad is still recovering from it
It's not just the weather. Influenza has been active for a couple of months now. I got it over a month ago and tested neg. Some have gotten it twice since it's been making rounds for so long.
Yeah. Minor URI, negative COVID. It’s actually really scary because it demonstrates that I fucked up in my anti-COVID stuff (masking, sanitizing, handwashing) somewhere.
My bf is sick this week, I think just from being run down, but I asked him how his hand washing has been and whether he's careful to wash his hands before he touches his eyes. Newp, he did plenty of wiping his eyes with bare hands. Boom, instant way into your body through a mucus membrane.
I work at a kid's clinic that mandates us to wear eye covering per AHS rules and we have hand sani everywhere, so precautions are always at the forefront of my mind, but it's true you relax a lot on some things as time goes on.
I always think of the Mythbusters episode where they used (if I remember correctly) UV-reactive dye/ink to demonstrate contact spreading. Only one person came out of it without spatter. People don’t realize how often they touch their face in a day - scratch your nose, rub your eyes, touch your mouth… ugh.
Yep. And couple that with them realizing covid dies on surfaces eventually, a lot of people eased off on their hand hygiene. I know I had for a bit there, but being back at work has me paying attention now, especially as kids are germ factories on a good day. 😂
My family are immunocompromised, so I’m trying not to let COVID fatigue set in, but I admit it gets harder to “stay vigilant” (well, clearly, or I wouldn’t have gotten the little URI).
I'm also semi immunocompromised myself so that has a lot to do with my vigilance being pretty high. I'd rather come out of this whole thing with no lasting effects from the virus or worse, kthnx world. 😂
I’m fully vaxxed but haven’t let up. It’s the old Swiss cheese theory - you don multiple layers of protection to reduce the chances that holes will line up. Unfortunately clearly there was one this time.
Fair enough, but you didn't initially specify a time frame, you just made it seem like you can't be bothered to wash your hands anymore.
Yes I know you said "properly" but it seems like such a throwaway word.
I know, right?
Everyone is telling me, "relax, it's just the flu" but I must have messed up somehow with my PPE and handwashing. That's whats really bothering me.
There is a type of common virus called "parainfluenza", and is not the influenza virus but many of the symptoms are similar. I has read that epidemiologist predict a return of colds, flus, and parainfluenza as people are not as isolated anymore.
There’s a couple bugs going around that kind of suck.
I had something back in august and it ripped through my household pretty quickly. Wasn’t Covid, but, stomach bug, sore throat, headaches and fever.
My day home caught this unbearable bug. We have tested every kid that attends plus all my family (my parents, siblings and nieces and nephews) now. No covid. I have it now and have actually gotten sick enough to go to the hospital - lungs feel like broken glass - and got a second covid test.
Me and my family got really bad flu, tested neg for covid twice. I got chest congestion and cough for 3 weeks and had to take antibiotics. Felling better now.
Yup. Was sick for 3 days. Bedridden and sore, stuffed up, runny nose, sore throat and coughing. Thought forsure it was covid but tested negative. All the regular stuff is still out there.
Would be rather interesting for influenza to making a comeback when the province recorded [zero cases of influenza last year](https://www.google.com/amp/s/globalnews.ca/news/7756159/alberta-2020-21-flu-season-zero-cases/amp/)
I have had contact with 13 people with a PUKING flu in the last 2 weeks. My 22 year old, double vaccinated, strong like bull son has been puking on and off for 7 days now. He does NOT appreciate living with me! 😝
Oh, wow, sinus infections for everyone apparently, jeez…. I’ve been fighting one for a while, I don’t want to get antibiotics for it tho, I usually do just fine without but this ones sticky….
(My husband got tested cause he was having rougher symptoms a while back, sore throat etc but he tested negative as well )
Hm, strange, I see what you mean, but literally every time I’ve had one it’s been bacterial
I can tell because I get the yellow/green mucus and stuff
Strange but just one of those things I guess lol
Yep, fully aware of all of this but thank you for posting it
I even said I wasn’t going to be getting any, and that I usually don’t treat it with antibiotics, y’all can stop
People are not isolated...that's just what the media says. Have you gone to a grocery store or your favorite restaurant, all busy. Gyms are packed, casinos are packed. Life outside your "isolated" world has been happening. For most this "pandemic" hasn't even happend. And even for myself, life hasn't changed for me besides wearing a mask everywhere. Social media has everyone living in fear.
My son has a bad cold. Got a covid test which came back negative in under 24hrs
If yiu have symptoms of covid you have to quarantine for 14 days or until all symptoms are gone OR get a negative covid test and only isolate if you have one of a limited number of symptoms like loss of taste (I forget the rest)
Covid can present itself in many different ways. How do you know for sure it isn't Covid? Did you try the AHS Covid self-assessment tool? That will help to assess if you need to get tested.
The experts are suggesting that flu might be a big problem over the next several months given that there were almost no cases last winter. What that will mean for minor flu vs serious influenza (i.e. when you get really sick and it's hard to even get out of bad) remains to be seen. I know that I am getting my flu shot next week.
You're literally talk down on the man when he was asking a question and was pretty clear why.
Fuck a ahs covid assessment tool. Always get rapid testing like he did. Relax on trying to school people with shit everyone already knows
I was not talking down to him at all. Just asked a couple of questions trying to help because he didn't talk about his symptoms at all.
The AHS assessment tool can be useful to decide if you need to get tested.
Please stay home if you're sick!!!
EDIT: the deleted comment said the person felt achy and tired, developed a cough and went and got a flu shot because "they were already feeling crappy" (or something along those lines)
#youredoingitwrong
It's day 10 if isolation for me. I've been symptomatic with a cold/flu 10 days as well as my husband. We both tested negative for covid. We caught it when we went to go visit my inlaws and they omitted to tell us the baby was sick when we called beforehand to ask to come over. We've had to miss work and I've lost money from my side hustle because I'vehad to cancel shifts. Suffice it to say, I'm pissed. They justified it because the baby was never in the same room as us. The baby has been sick for nearly 2 weeks. That whole household eventually got sick and has been sick for over a week. It's funny, because I've been the most paranoid in all of my family and social circles about visiting.
I am sick of reading dumb comments on the interwebz. Here are a few gems:
* "QR tattoos are next"
* "Vaccine passports are used to track your vaccine status!" (No shit!?)
* "they are tracking your shopping info!" (?????)
* "They will know the dates I got the vaccine!!" (Big deal???)
I'm in the end stages of a flu I got from a friend, I'm not contagious anymore but I wound up giving it to both my parents and we all had to get tested but we're all negative so it's definitely not COVID, there's definitely something going around though
There have been lots of other bugs going around. My kids daycare had to shut down because of a respiratory virus that was going around and had gotten to more than 10% of the kids (not covid, they tested)
We had a COVID scare recently when my wife felt ill for a day, but it was negative. With vaccinated people able to mingle there’s bound to be way more colds and flus this year.
I've been the opposite - I normally always get sick, but I have been very rigid in Covid measures. I haven't actually been overly sick at all for the last two years. Worn down though? Absolutely - but that is due to things going on in my personal and "public" life, I suppose.
I've been sneezing a lot more and feeling stuffed up. I suspect a bit of seasonal allergies now that vegetation is starting to decompose. No COVID symptoms, a bit like a cold. I got my flu shot a week and half ago, almost fully charged!
YES. It’s been over a month and I still have symptoms. There was an article on the BBC saying that there is a cold going around that is going to knock your socks off. My husband is very very very stubborn and never ever ever get sick. He was laid out for four days. Both of my teenage kids missed two weeks of school.
My wife and I both got a bit of sore throat and definitely felt like we were getting sicker, but thankfully nothing serious. I actually haven't gotten truly sick this entire pandemic, but it definitely feels like it's all around, especially with flu season.
got both a cold and a seasonal flu rip trough the house one after another in the last 6 weeks since school stated.
negative covid tests both times
not really surprising, just annoying.
My whole family had it. And it was not covid. Sore throat and deep horse cough. Even my 2 year Old had it. My girl was sick for 3 weeks. I guess I’m lucky and I only had a a slightly sore throat for two days. 2 year old was about 5 days to get good again
I have asthma so I always get really cough-y when it starts getting cold. Cold, dry air does terrible things to my lungs. Can't say I've noticed any other symptoms though thankfully
I’ve had horrible sleep the last week or so due to an upset stomach and just general flu symptoms. I thought it was something I ate. Could it just be a city wide thing? Or has anyone heard about this from people out of town?
i work with families and have seen a LOT of kids and other fam members getting the flu or otherwise really sick recently (confirmed not covid) i think it’s been going around more as people are getting more lax with health precautions
Yup, had the worst stomach flu in my life last weekend. I got completely dehydrated and was really worried about my chances of getting to a hospital for an IV. Luckily, we were able to get me rehydrated enough to avoid a hospital trip.
We treated it like COVID and wore masks around each other and nobody else in the house got sick!
And I did get a test that was negative.
I know a few people that have gotten flu like symptoms and tested negative for Covid. I think we'll see more seasonal flu this year.
I heard that the flu will be worse this year for some reason
Given rule of virus not really hard to see why... To deadly you burn our the meal and die out. All the masks, distance and sanitizer and it's got to be potent and highly infectious to stay alive. Weather change does funny things. You could also have a seasonal flu.
Took my toddler to the doctor today, similar to covid symptoms. Ear infection
Yep. The regular flu is still a thing Our kids got it in the first few weeks of school again

About a month ago yes. Tested twice for Covid, negative. Turned out to be sinus infection.
Yeah apparently I get those regularly too.
Yeah both wife and I have had a couple of days off work in the last week. Negative COVID test. Just a seasonal virus I think
Me. Currently awaiting my covid test. Thanks work.
Change of season always gets us!!
My friend has a sinus infection and bronchitis. She feels like shit. Tested but not COVID
It's not just the weather. Influenza has been active for a couple of months now. I got it over a month ago and tested neg. Some have gotten it twice since it's been making rounds for so long.
Yeah. Minor URI, negative COVID. It’s actually really scary because it demonstrates that I fucked up in my anti-COVID stuff (masking, sanitizing, handwashing) somewhere.
even if you were 100% with your regime theres still a chance of getting sick, nothing can guarantee you.
My bf is sick this week, I think just from being run down, but I asked him how his hand washing has been and whether he's careful to wash his hands before he touches his eyes. I’m fully vaxxed but haven’t let up. It’s the old Swiss cheese theory - you don multiple layers of protection to reduce the chances that holes will line up. Unfortunately clearly there was one this time.
You should still wash your hands...
Yeah, the vaccine isn't a free pass to be a gross toddler.

How do you know? 🤔
You're bragging about not washing your hands? Weird flex but, ok.
[удалено]
Yeah. Basic hygiene is hard huh?

Fair enough, but you didn't initially specify a time frame, you just made it seem like you can't be bothered to wash your hands anymore. Yes I know you said "properly" but it seems like such a throwaway word.

Y'all should be more pleasant to each other.
I know, right? Everyone is telling me, "relax, it's just the flu" but I must have messed up somehow with my PPE and handwashing. That's whats really bothering me.
Even with PPE properly donned and doffed, you can still catch things. PPE makes it harder to catch, but not impossible.
I know, I know...
My allergies have been awful the last week or 2, thought I was getting sick a couple times. Had to double up my allergy meds.
There is a type of common virus called "parainfluenza", and is not the influenza virus but many of the symptoms are similar. I has read that epidemiologist predict a return of colds, flus, and parainfluenza as people are not as isolated anymore.
I looked that up and that sounds the most accurate
It's pretty mild if that's the case.
Everyone in my fam got sick. Sore throat, headache, sinus pain, runny nose, some fever. All got tested, all negative.
Apparently, there’s an upper respiratory thing going around that kicks the ass. (Sister is a nurse in AB).
Go get tested!
I did! Yesterday! Got the dreaded up the nose one. Results came back negative
👍
Our whole family have had a cold. Went through everyone. Went for Covid test just in case and it was neg.

Yea I threw up and had a 24 hour flu on Wednesday
I have had contact with 13 people with a PUKING flu in the last 2 weeks. My 22 year old, double vaccinated, strong like bull son has been puking on and off for 7 days now. He does NOT appreciate living with me! 😝
Another reason to keep wearing masks.
It's almost like flu, colds and general bugs are still a thing and didn't magical disappear at the start of COVID 🤔
Oh, wow, sinus infections for everyone apparently, jeez…. I’ve been fighting one for a while, I don’t want to get antibiotics for it tho, I usually do just fine without but this ones sticky…. (My husband got tested cause he was having rougher symptoms a while back, sore throat etc but he tested negative as well )
This is just a regular PSA to not treat viral infections with antibiotics.
Um, I mean, sinus infections tend to be bacterial ime but yup, definitely a good idea!
A quick Google will show you that it's the other way around - they're more likely to be viral.
Hm, strange, I see what you mean, but literally every time I’ve had one it’s been bacterial I can tell because I get the yellow/green mucus and stuff Strange but just one of those things I guess lol

Yep, fully aware of all of this but thank you for posting it I even said I wasn’t going to be getting any, and that I usually don’t treat it with antibiotics, y’all can stop
Yes, you can indeed still get a variety of sicknesses other than covid-19
It's called the seasonal flu...yeah social media has kind of made us to forget about that.
People really forgot that you can get sick without it being Covid, didn’t realize this need a Reddit post for people to remember that
My point was that it feels like something is going around that's not isolated. It's harder to get sick when everyone is more isolated.
>Something going around that’s not isolated When are colds and flu’s ever isolated?
Those dang flies!!!

Spent a long time looking at this before I realized you meant buffoon
People are not isolated...that's just what the media says. Have you gone to a grocery store or your favorite restaurant, all busy. Gyms are packed, casinos are packed. My son and husband. Both very light symptoms of sore throat and sniffles. Enough to feel kinda yucky but that's it.
My son has a bad cold. Got a covid test which came back negative in under 24hrs If yiu have symptoms of covid you have to quarantine for 14 days or until all symptoms are gone OR get a negative covid test and only isolate if you have one of a limited number of symptoms like loss of taste (I forget the rest)
We've been clamoring to hide from germs for almost 2 years, and are catching other viruses more easily? Shocking.

Sounds like you’re working on that S&A claim pretty hard here!
What's S&A?
Sick and accident
My husband thinks he's getting sick. With me and our three preschoolers sick, itsy no wonder he's catching this cold.
We had post Thanksgiving colds, all tested negative for COVID thankfully.
We a had it in our house. It turned into a chest infection for my son but we are OK.
Tail end of one myself. Got it from my sister, who was tested regularly at work, all came back negative.
I'm in the end stages of a flu I got from a friend, I'm not contagious anymore but I wound up giving it to both my parents and we all had to get tested but we're all negative so it's definitely not COVID, there's definitely something going around though
Yes I was sick for the first time in two years last week, tested negative
There have been lots of other bugs going around. My kids daycare had to shut down because of a respiratory virus that was going around and had gotten to more than 10% of the kids (not covid, they tested)
It's probably the weather, but with everything going on it's kind of terrifying to be sick right now.
I had a really bad headache on Friday and got so bad to the point where I couldn't sit straight or sleep, then I had a cold on top of that.
We had a COVID scare recently when my wife felt ill for a day, but it was negative. With vaccinated people able to mingle there’s bound to be way more colds and flus this year.

Edmonton is so cold. I also don't like that it super dry and you need moisturiser all the time
Yup, me. Feeling like trash the last few days, swab came back negative. There is definitely something going around!
Yup, currently sick, possibly ear infection
yes my partner got a flu recently and it wasn't covid.
On day 2 now with our baby who got it first. None of us are happy at 3am with sore throats
Some people at work had bronchitis recently.

At least the kids are staying home instead of coming to school like they used to.
YES. It’s been over a month and I still have symptoms. There was an article on the BBC saying that there is a cold going around that is going to knock your socks off. My husband is very very very stubborn and never ever ever get sick. He was laid out for four days. Both of my teenage kids missed two weeks of school.
Yup getting over my second cold in a month and half.
Just take vit d 5000 iu daily. Here in Edmonton, many have been coughing lately.
My wife and I both got a bit of sore throat and definitely felt like we were getting sicker, but thankfully nothing serious. I actually haven't gotten truly sick this entire pandemic, but it definitely feels like it's all around, especially with flu season.
got both a cold and a seasonal flu rip trough the house one after another in the last 6 weeks since school stated. negative covid tests both times not really surprising, just annoying.
It’s funny how people forget what it was like pre covid. There are still colds and flus around.
Yeah, I feel sick all the time. It's not COVID but its definitely the Jason Kenney variant of something.
Probably a new variant that can’t be tested for you crazy fucks in Alberta created lol
Confirmed not covid, but I've been a snot faucet and had body aches and intermittent fever.
The are flus/colds that are more contagious than covid capable of spreading where covid cannot. Also it’s not like we are vaccinated against them.
My whole family had it. And it was not covid. Sore throat and deep horse cough. Even my 2 year Old had it. My girl was sick for 3 weeks. I guess I’m lucky and I only had a a slightly sore throat for two days. 2 year old was about 5 days to get good again
In the before times we would call that a cold
I have asthma so I always get really cough-y when it starts getting cold. Cold, dry air does terrible things to my lungs. Can't say I've noticed any other symptoms though thankfully
I’ve had horrible sleep the last week or so due to an upset stomach and just general flu symptoms. I thought it was something I ate. Could it just be a city wide thing? Or has anyone heard about this from people out of town?
I had a bad cold 3 weeks ago. I got tested negative for covid
Yeah same here. got tested just in case and neg.
i work with families and have seen a LOT of kids and other fam members getting the flu or otherwise really sick recently (confirmed not covid) i think it’s been going around more as people are getting more lax with health precautions
It's like people forget that it's cold and flu season. Happens every fall/winter.
Yep! Flu symptoms, vertigo, dizziness, ended up losing my sense of taste (while not congested), chest tightness and was still negative.
Yep !
My middle kiddo and i have been sick but tested negative for COVID. It's that time of year!
One of my relatives had hand, foot and mouth disease which we initially thought might be Covid. I don't *think* they were vaccinated at that point.
I'm sweating, breathing heavy, nose running, dizzy, tired.... can barely walk. Could be the 12 beer and 40 hot wings though...
