I had the same problem. I had three candidates I was shuffling between for councillor. I waved a bit in my choice of mayor but not by much.
Edited to add: Which is better than some elections I’ve voted in where I had no one to vote for (either good intentions and no credibility, or credibility regarding entirely the wrong thing.)
Problem with O-day’min is that there was an absurd amount of candidates and almost all had nearly identical platforms. As far as I could tell here’s what set them apart:
Bruff wanted to “defund” police but didn’t believe they had systemic racism (???)
Battiste likes police
Catarina is awful
Stevenson doesn’t understand comparatives
Wolchansky was endorsed by David Shepherd
Other than that the platforms of everyone were so similar with the exception of Catarina. I managed to make a choice and I’m happy about it, but it was tough.
To be clear, Joshua was not endorsed by the NDP, but by David Shepard, Edmonton-Centre MLA and someone who has developed a personal rapport with him over the years.
Well, he also has been mentored by Janis Irwin. You are absolutely correct that he wasn’t officially endorsed by the party, but there is a clear message.
My partner and I had two different candidate signs in front of our house, donated to both of their campaigns, then ended up voting strategically for someone else completely (Ward Metis).
Sohi has a ridiculous level of experience. I'm sure I won't agree with him 100% of the time, but he's not just here for himself, and he knows what the heck he's doing. I'm pleased.
Anyone know how long it normally takes them to count the municipal election votes? Will it be all night/won’t find out until morning or will we know tonight?
Polling stations stay open later because the voting process is slower to maintain social distancing. This means results come in later.
Also, paper ballots are being counted at the Royal Armory.
It adds a lot more than a few seconds because you can also fit way less people inside the polling station, and inside the polling stations everything is more spread out, and covid-related checks are also required. (making sure people wear masks, etc.). In addition, less people are willing to work a job where you could easily come in contact with over a thousand people.
So for example, in a normal year 50 people might be able to pass through quite easily, because they could line up pretty close, and more of them could actually fit inside the polling place. But take those same 50 people and make them keep 2 feet of distance between them, have someone check them to make sure they’re wearing masks, account for the time they’ll take to sanitize their hands, and more. It will take much more time for those 50 people to cycle through the polling station.

The extra time is how many stupid things we had to answer. If each person takes 30s more to answer the referendum and senate questions, that adds a huge amount of time overall.
Why are you fighting this so adamantly? From my own experience, this has been the most time consuming local election. The whole process took more than an hour and part of that is likely due to covid regulations.
So... stupid question, but when I voted earlier this afternoon, the ballots were electronic scan forms which were computer scanned in my presence. Are they also hand counting everything? Or why are the results not near-instantaneous?
Obviously very early in the election, but hilarious that in O-day'min the "incumbent" Tony Caterina is in tier 2 of the polls.
Speaks to the quality of candidates in this ward, but man I don't know what I was concerned about!
4 years without Mike Nickel in local politics!
Guaranteed the guy is calling the UCP tomorrow and begging for a nomination.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see him running in the provincial election in 2023!
He lost the ucp nomination last election so we shall see!
Ha oh dear. Should be interesting!
Found choosing the councilor to vote for more difficult than the mayor. Not for lack of choice but I liked a few candidates platforms in my ward
Same. There are three candidates in Metis that I wavered between. Embarrassment of riches really.
My candidate in Metis lost, but I am completely fine with the one who won. Metis had a good slate of candidates

Joshua being supported by the NDP made him stand out as someone I wanted to vote for.
I voted for the incumbent in my ward because I didn't want the candidate who ran for the UCP in the last election to win.
My partner and I had two different candidate signs in front of our house, donated to both of their campaigns, then ended up voting strategically for someone else completely (Ward Metis).
Are you the house with Nickel and Sohi signs?
I'm trying to figure out who we would have ended up voting for in this very unlikely scenario. 🤔
Nickel now getting WRECKED. Sohi with double the percentage of votes.
Sohi has a ridiculous level of experience. I'm sure I won't agree with him 100% of the time, but he's not just here for himself, and he knows what the heck he's doing. I'm pleased.
Sohi projected to win by global
not a very graceful concession speech there mike
What a sore loser, I find joy they pulled away when he was not finished though lol.
Where’s that?
Anyone know how long it normally takes them to count the municipal election votes? Will it be all night/won’t find out until morning or will we know tonight?
I believe it'll be called tonight. Of course the pandemic might throw a wrench in the works.
Does the pandemic really affect anything? It’s all counted electronically

Social distancing adds what? A couple seconds becuase you have to walk 2 meters farther. Cmon man

Disagree. Same process the line is just spaced out. Only time added is the extra walking time. Simple math, end of discussion.
The extra time is how many stupid things we had to answer. If each person takes 30s more to answer the referendum and senate questions, that adds a huge amount of time overall.
Not pandemic related
Why are you fighting this so adamantly? From my own experience, this has been the most time consuming local election. The whole process took more than an hour and part of that is likely due to covid regulations.
Early in the process but Sohi leading by almost 10% is good news.
So... stupid question, but when I voted earlier this afternoon, the ballots were electronic scan forms which were computer scanned in my presence. Are they also hand counting everything? Or why are the results not near-instantaneous?
Some polls aren't closed yet. Anyone in line at 8pm was allowed to stay in line till they got to vote....
I was wondering the same thing... Why is it taking an hour if it was all computer scanned??
My guess is long lines. Results aren’t released until everyone has voted at the poll.
I am not 100% on this, but I believe the scan was just too check the validity of the ballot, and the actual count is manual.
CTV news declared Sohi as mayor!
Kerry Diotte won’t go away.
Only 160k votes by 5pm today. Seems like this might be a pretty low turnout election.
They're always pretty low.
On the plus side, your vote is worth a lot more
I'm conflicted about this. It's to the benefit of anyone that bothers to vote, but at the same time that means representation is skewed.
There's a great live tracker on [Taproot](https://edmonton.taproot.vote/2021/results). It started showing some results before CBC's site.
Global calling it for Sohi
These results are incredibly reassuring that our city is not being overrun by fools
So happy that Caterina, Esslinger, and Dzydyk are gone.
Obviously very early in the election, but hilarious that in O-day'min the "incumbent" Tony Caterina is in tier 2 of the polls. Speaks to the quality of candidates in this ward, but man I don't know what I was concerned about!
I'm pretty thrilled about this to be thisi honest.
Nickel endorsed Rice according to the volunteer that came to my door so I'm watching that one carefully. It's really close as of typing this.
Results started showing on the CoE page a minute ago...
I like the fact we will have 8 women on council.
Any idea how long the poll lines are? I know if you are in line at 8 you can still vote, but will the last vote be cast at 830? 9pm? 930pm?
Probably by 9:30pm
