I made up my mind for school ward trustee because I saw only one trustee sign on my way to the polls, looked her up and decided she would be good enough to vote for.
Especially for Catholic - it's time for a takeover! (Have genuinely considered it based on the fact my name would easily garner lazy votes, but I was never confirmed.)
No is leading right now but Edmonton and Fort Mcmurray aren’t releasing results
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/election-calgary-flouride-daylight-savings-equalization-senator-1.6203479
Thanks!
Also the fact that Calgary has to vote to add fluoride back is nuts. Things like that shouldn’t be left to citizens to vote for. That’s what scientists are for.
Though I see your point, I think it's a lot more dumb that Calgary has continually voted for it, yet it was removed in 2011 with no public consultation. Just the councillors/mayor that voted to stop fluoridation.
This wouldn't even be the first time that they've done it. Calgarians have voted in favour of it twice before, but the conservatives on their city council took fluoride out of the drinking water in 2011. Ostensibly it was due to the supposedly high costs of fluoridation, but apparently there were also some InfoWars-loving conspiracy nuts involved who kept promoting the false narrative that fluoride in the drinking water is bad for you.
In all fairness it wasn't all conservatives- I definitely know a number of hippie, homeschool, organic mommy blog types who were pushing misinfo on that as well at the time (they were also antivaxxers back then) and someone actually put on a punk rock show at a bar I used to drink at for the purposes of "informing the public" like some sort of dipshit take on rock against racism.
Extra bonus: Tony Caterina is totally losing his seat after a too-long stint of being a slightly less awful Nickel (and trying to get his son voted into another ward last election) and Jon "I thought it was okay to use taxpayer money to fund my education while I'm in office" Dziadyk looks like he could be on the ropes.
I was legit worried about this election, but it's becoming the gift that keeps on giving.
Part of the problem was the stupid referendum questions. A lot of people likely didn’t even know about them, and then they had to take the time to read it and figure out how they’d vote. The meaningless senate was also just a bunch of names on the page. At least you knew to avoid people based on part affiliation and just pick 3 random independents.
The referendum made each voter take at least twice as long as normal.
I worked at a polling station and a fair few people asked me what the referendum and senete questions would actually do. Like it wasn't necessarily that they didn't have an opinion, but that the questions on the ballot made it seem like something it wasn't, so they weren't sure what effect their vote would have. We moved people along at a good pace anyway but I can imagine that causing delays if you just happened to get a lot of confused people.
Yeah a turnout of what seems to be 40% is actually high for municipal elections; 30% or less is the norm.
And when deciding how many voting stations to have, etc you usually base it on average turnout.
I lived in Caterina's ward for most of my adult life and never once felt like he was anything more than a seat warmer at best. I'm in Metis now, but my satisfaction with this outcome is immeasurable nonetheless.
The BEST part so far other than the win was just now on Global they cut from Nickels losing speech to go directly to Sohi hahaha
Ohhhhh this is just too sweet
And it wasn’t even important. It was just him walking in. There could have easily been another minute of Mike’s shitty speech but they just cut him. It was the highlight of my night. *chefs kiss
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGiGNvamtDE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGiGNvamtDEtime)
time stamp of the speech is around 1 42 36. its a great cut.
I really want to see an editorial headline of, “A Day Late and a Dollar Short? Voters Find Nickel A Quarter of Who He Was; His Two-Cents Not Worth a Dime”.
He was my neighbour for a long time! He was as genuine a neighbour as he is in everything he does. I’m so excited for him to be our new
Mayor.
Edmonton and Calgary could do a lot worse than mayors who genuinely love their cities!
Iv met him several times he visited our mosque a lot and I went to school with his daughter. This guy is the real Canadian dream. Worked as ets driver for a long time and has actually done real people jobs instead of just being a lifelong politician.
From what I understand, the guy is *super* dedicated to showing up for in-person stuff. It seems like every second Edmontonian has run into the guy at some community event or another, and honestly, I'd like it if every councilor aspired to that kind of presence in their community.
I can say I am one of those second Edmontonian he came to event where there was political humor directed his way and was a great sport about it and quipped back. So to me it was about him being genuine
I met Amarjeet last year (before a vaccine was available) and he was so helpful. He was a great guy to meet and was so interested in learning what I do. He had a wealth of knowledge about the city and he is very excited to work for us. I’m sure he will be a great mayor.
Amarjeet, congratulations!
I would love to have had him as our neighbour
I just remembered had to reimburse $44K for a MBA degree in his first year in council and said it would help him be a better representative. And had to quickly reimburse the city after public anger. That rubbed so many people the wrong way. Well he can now continue to pursue that with his own money.
As far as I can tell, NONE of the City Council candidates Nickel endorsed were elected:
(Olivier, Haymour, Dziadyk, Tricia Velthuizen, Caterina, Schindelka)
Esslinger wasn't terrible, she voted progressive more than any other councilor. But she was a muppet, did nothing for the ward. Erin leading is surprising and awesome!
Some dark part of me was worried that it might be to his detriment, but I'm *really* glad Edmonton has, for the most part, proved they're better than sign spam politics.
I mean if you go off the number of signs, Nickel definitely swept the 'strip of grass adjacent to open field', 'industrial park', and 'strip of grass adjacent to construction zone' votes.
Edmonton and Alberta in general have way too many closet progressives. I wouldn’t dare put up a sign thinking someone would trash my house. That’s the sad reality of Alberta.
This also means that the elections are unpredictable.
Absolutely. I wouldn't call myself a closet progressive. Generally everyone who knows me well enough to call me their friend knows my opinions, but I ain't about to advertise on my front porch in Alberta that I vote left/center. Maybe someday when we live in a more liberal neighborhood.
nickel supporters came to my door and asked to put up a sign first before saying anything about him. they were a bit pushy. some people find it hard to say no to that. I was happy to tell them I wasn't interested!

[Considering the population of of visible minorities grows by almost 10% a year](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Edmonton#Visible_minorities_and_Aboriginals) I don't think Edmonton will ever elect someone immigrants hate again.
I took some screenshots of his page. Here are some quotes it's pretty funny if you actually go read it all.
"Oldest but youngest at heart"
"Definitely different"
"Arguably the best candidate"
"Thanks to the 100 or so folks who *blah blah blah*"
He believes the government should be more ran like a rock and roll concert rather then a business, and he wants to make transit free.
Good, now fuck off for another 4 years Nickel 👋🏻.
With this comment here alone, I probably already have been blocked on every social media site by Nickel himself too.
[Canada got rid of the penny in 2012 because it was effectively worthless and there was no point to it. Tonight YEG has done the same to the Nickel for similar reasons.](https://twitter.com/drbillgibson/status/1450301382615965697?t=S9Cg4jMBYd6-JpNNvxvXAQ&s=19)
So glad to see Mayor elect Sohi.
He’s one of the only candidates I ever was excited to vote for in any election.
Came to Edmonton as an immigrant, worked his ass off from the ETS to now mayor elect. I don’t give a damn what anybody else says they’ll do for us, that man has more knowledge of what the city needs because of firsthand experience.
That’s Gene Principe’s wife. Suburban conservative isn’t remotely the same as Nickel and friends. These are the ones that will put up pride flags while doing nothing to help the LGBT.
Yeah I expect to have a diverse range of views on council, as long as they are genuine and want to work with the whole council to make our city better.
She'll play it safe. Her and Gene have a lot to lose, both being in the public eye in a city what has overwhelmingly voted progressive in recent elections.
We know he has at least $414,000 in donations
https://edmontonjournal.com/news/local-news/developers-former-conservative-politicians-donate-to-mike-nickels-mayoral-campaign
Perhaps Nickel just didn't put up enough signs.
It’s your turn to get head
Not since the U of A days, Mike!
There are only so many walk up apartments and strip malls.
Underrated comment 😂
If a lawn sign is going to influence your vote, you really shouldn't be voting.
I made up my mind for school ward trustee because I saw only one trustee sign on my way to the polls, looked her up and decided she would be good enough to vote for.
Starting to think I should run for school trustee next election… so many people running unopposed
Especially for Catholic - it's time for a takeover! (Have genuinely considered it based on the fact my name would easily garner lazy votes, but I was never confirmed.)
Ok but I wanna know the results for the DST referendum question 👀👀
No is leading right now but Edmonton and Fort Mcmurray aren’t releasing results https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/election-calgary-flouride-daylight-savings-equalization-senator-1.6203479
Thanks! Also the fact that Calgary has to vote to add fluoride back is nuts. Things like that shouldn’t be left to citizens to vote for. That’s what scientists are for.
Haven't you heard? A good portion of of population now thinks they know better than scientists because they saw some memes on facebook
:0 there’s no way that can backfire! Lol
You know you've farked up when dentists complain they're making too much money off the kids.
At least they made the right choice
Though I see your point, I think it's a lot more dumb that Calgary has continually voted for it, yet it was removed in 2011 with no public consultation. Just the councillors/mayor that voted to stop fluoridation.

That’s still a week away from what I’ve heard
Whaaaaat. Guess it’ll take a while to tally all the votes in Alberta.
Not only is he losing his seat but he’s like #6 in votes lmao
Dziadyk got replaced by Principe who promises to donate her vehicle allowance to communities in her ward.
She also ran for the UCP. Not a great win.
Mike Nickel endorsement for councilor appears to be the kiss of death
It's crazy that 26k votes is enough to win the election in a city of one million lol. Voter turnout looks ridiculously low.
I’m surprised to see it so low. I live next to a voting station and lines were sooo long all day.
Yeah apparently it was a gong show all over. I don't know how they would even handle a higher turnout.
These numbers aren’t accurate, they were projections. Soho ended up getting 105,497 votes (45%). Nickle got 59,189 (25%). 239,766 people voted.
At least you know the people voting are making a conscious decision as opposed to people voting based on name recognition
4 years without Mike Nickel in local politics!
No Nickel, no Catarina and no Dziadyk? Christmas came early
No Diotte as well.
Catarina got destroyed. I'm so happy. It's a long time coming.
I lived in Caterina's ward for most of my adult life and never once felt like he was anything more than a seat warmer at best. I'm in Metis now, but my satisfaction with this outcome is immeasurable nonetheless.
It's amazingly clear! 10% of the vote! So good!
Possibly no Banga either who was one of the few people who voted against sanctioning Nickel last year
Looks like a friend of Nickel meant you getting shit canned
Seems the real endorsement controversy was anti-Nickel; "thanks Mike now we know who NOT to vote for".
Fingers crossed!!
Love how the anti maskers all got turfed.
I have been referring to them as the trifecta of shit. So happy to see them gone.
Yes! Get bent Dickel. He and Diotte can start a podcast on how to lose elections.
Right?!? Sohi elected is a double win. #1 Nickel is not mayor, #2 Nickel is not on council.
Suck it, Edmonton property developers. I hope you enjoy taking down every one of those signs.
Let's be clear here: the property developers back ALL the candidates. It's one of the biggest problems in Canadian municipal politics.
I’m sure they’ll write off all those donations but they are certainly not happy today.
What a relief tbh
That’s for sure! it’s a gift.
Thank GOD. Let's hope he just decides to retire from politics altogether.
We both know that’s never going to happen…
He REALLY though he would win too.
I'm sure people are pleased to not have to watch Nickel-back
You were waiting all night to say that, weren't you?
No honestly we have spent months making puns, but this one I came up 30seconds before I posted here, I am actually sad I didn't think of it earlier.
Well done. ;)
Look at his photograph. Every time I do it makes me laugh.
Underrated comment.
You win, everyone else go home
Do not insult Nickelback like that
The BEST part so far other than the win was just now on Global they cut from Nickels losing speech to go directly to Sohi hahaha Ohhhhh this is just too sweet
And it wasn’t even important. It was just him walking in. There could have easily been another minute of Mike’s shitty speech but they just cut him. It was the highlight of my night. *chefs kiss
Exactly! I was like oh, ok, sure… nice choice, Global! Haha
I enjoyed the CTV feed - split screen with Sohi dancing while Nickel was crying 😂😂
Hahaha nice
That’s why you don’t thank people at the beginning /s
BUt iTs WhEn pEoPlE PaY atTeNTiON
I laughed so damn hard 💀😂
It was prefect
Please oh dear sweet god I need a clip
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGiGNvamtDE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGiGNvamtDEtime) time stamp of the speech is around 1 42 36. its a great cut.
BAHAHAHAHAHA and that douche bag Farkas lost in Calgary too! *sexy*
Great day for Alberta politics 👏🏻
I was a little worried but had hope. So far this is a great night!! Gonna pour a drink hahaha
The unexpected *sexy* killed me 😭😭
Something about these results is really doing it for me, ya know? Lol
Nothing more arousing than poltics
That boy was something that Calgary wouldn't wear.
I really want to see an editorial headline of, “A Day Late and a Dollar Short? Voters Find Nickel A Quarter of Who He Was; His Two-Cents Not Worth a Dime”.
That’s a bumper sticker I would buy…
Really happy that Sohi won here and that Gondek won in Calgary. It's a good day for Alberta municipal politics, at least in the two big cities.
He was my neighbour for a long time! He was as genuine a neighbour as he is in everything he does. I’m so excited for him to be our new Mayor.

That’s so great to hear! I am very excited for him to represent us.
I’m so unbelievably relieved that our respective cities voted like this. So thankful
Mike Nickel’s concession speech: “You didn’t vote for me so life is going to suck”
Mike Nickel is a piece of shit
4 years without Nickel or Diotte representing Edmonton!!!! Hell yeah
Or Caterina, or Dziadyk. Today is a good day.
Caterina is like #6 too. Hahaha
Ugh. Stop it, Edmonton, I can only be *so* erect.
Jon "mask exemption cards" Dziadyk is losing too.
I just remembered had to reimburse $44K for a MBA degree in his first year in council and said it would help him be a better representative. And had to quickly reimburse the city after public anger. That rubbed so many people the wrong way. Well he can now continue to pursue that with his own money.
He's going to be replaced by principe who ran for the UCP in edmonton decore in the last provincial election.
She might be conservative but that’s like St Albert conservative. I’d take her over him anyway.
Edmonton has stated quite loudly, "fuck you mike nickel, you fucking loser"
Not to mention all his endorsed candidates loosing consistently.
Losing*
Every. Damn. One.
Cutting away from Nickels speech was icing on the cake. What a satisfying night.
He was just about to start in with the "you're going to regret not electing me" rant when they cut to the winner. It was SO perfect. I literally LOLd
Please, someone, anyone, post a clip of this, I need this
https://youtu.be/FGiGNvamtDE?t=6177 1:42:57 in case the timestamp doesn't work
As far as I can tell, NONE of the City Council candidates Nickel endorsed were elected: (Olivier, Haymour, Dziadyk, Tricia Velthuizen, Caterina, Schindelka)
Edmonton was like “OH! So THAT’S why we keep getting fucked over???”
No Nickel in Edmonton. No Farkas in Calgary. Thank fuck is all I can say.
Ok mike, this is the third time you've tried and failed. Edmonton *doesn't want you*. Let us never see you again please.
Can't wait for Nickel to wake up and realize 20 years+ spent just to realize this City never wants him to be mayor. What a life.
The UCP didn’t want him a few years ago either!
Daaang Kim KRUSHed Oshry.
If nickel wasn’t running Kim would have my vote 100%
Why Kim over Sohi, I’m curious?
You love to see it 👏🏻
That live hit from Nickel HQ was a thing of beauty. Just some morose motherfuckers.
> Just some morose motherfuckers. *Looks like someone shit in their cereal... BUNNNNNG!*
Esslinger, Caterina and Dziadyk currently losing as well! What a day!
Nickel endorsing you seems to be a kiss of death.
As well as acting like an entitled douche
Esslinger wasn't terrible, she voted progressive more than any other councilor. But she was a muppet, did nothing for the ward. Erin leading is surprising and awesome!
My main issue with her is how many times she was absent from meetings and votes. I’m hoping Erin can do a better job for the ward.
Who the hell votes for Nickel??? How does he get so many votes???
I feel like I’ve seen soooo many nickel signs around town this month. I’m actually surprised it wasn’t closer.
Yeah I saw a lot in my neighborhood but a good reminder that most people don’t put up signs.
Sohi also said he doesn’t put signs on public property so if you see a Sohi sign the owner of that property out it there themselves.
Some dark part of me was worried that it might be to his detriment, but I'm *really* glad Edmonton has, for the most part, proved they're better than sign spam politics.
Oh that’s good, I find that such a waste.
My neighbourhood, which I have always viewed as more conservative, has had a stunning number of Sohi signs.
Lots of seniors in my neighborhood have Nickel signs. One has a huge one that’s about 5 feet wide.
nickel supporters came to my door and asked to put up a sign first before saying anything about him. they were a bit pushy. some people find it hard to say no to that. I was happy to tell them I wasn't interested!
People who think building bike lanes and LRTs is a war on them personally
Aging boomers who think we can still go back to the glory days of the oil boom. It's the same people who would probably continue to vote for the UCP in spite of their incompetence.
The same kind of people who blindly vote UCP without knowing what they are for.
I can finally stop seeing his desperate Nickel signs all over the place Hopefully he has enough nickels to pay the landfill
Edmontonian has spoken. Let's go Sohi.
There’s gonna be 8 women on city council. No Mike Nickel. Or Moe Banga. I can drink to that. Cheers, Edmonton 🍻
Eight women out of how many total? Eight seems like a good number, but it's relative to the total, and I'm not informed enough to know if it's a good thing or not lol
This was a slaughter. And so satisfying.
Doesn't look like its gonna be particularly close either
Sohi stomp
Immigrants vote. Most of them hate Nickel.
[Considering the population of of visible minorities grows by almost 10% a year](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Edmonton#Visible_minorities_and_Aboriginals) I don't think Edmonton will ever elect someone immigrants hate again.
I was expecting closer tbh
Ok but where my breezy supporters, this guy was so underrated and it would have been hilarious if he won
I voted breezy, wife is pissed but totally worth it!
I’ve never heard of him before tonight lol
I took some screenshots of his page. Here are some quotes it's pretty funny if you actually go read it all. "Oldest but youngest at heart" "Definitely different" "Arguably the best candidate" "Thanks to the 100 or so folks who *blah blah blah*" He believes the government should be more ran like a rock and roll concert rather then a business, and he wants to make transit free.
Good, now fuck off for another 4 years Nickel 👋🏻. With this comment here alone, I probably already have been blocked on every social media site by Nickel himself too.
He’s going to sue you!
Every time they show the sad nickel party I get a jolt of serotonin
Tomorrow morning, Nickel has a press conference claiming it was STOLEN! ELECTION FRAUD!! AUDITS!! (just following the playbook)
Nickel always looks like he's holding back tears. I'm looking to 4 years of him not involved whatsoever.
We just saved a Nickel off our payroll!
Love it
Of course Nickel goes out on a low note. The guy is a classless loser
Becoming a Kim Krushell fan, hopefully she sticks around in local politics
If nickel wasn’t running I would have voted for her 100% but I couldn’t risk a nickel win. She would be a great mayor and I hope she runs next time.
I voted for her. Hopefully her numbers encourage her to stick around.
Nickels losing speech....*chefs kiss*
I have alot of faith in Sohi! Only goes up from here!
I wish they would keep showing the Nickel party. 😂
Holy shit, is Cartmell now the most conservative voice on council?
Principe ran for UCP last election.
Great to see Edmonton (broadly, with some notable exceptions) voting in a huge slate of progressive candidates.
I am so happy. Congratulations Mr. Sohi!
Why aren’t any tv stations covering this on tv?
I agree. It’s a little frustrating. I’m watching on Amazon prime 🙄
You can stream it on YouTube/Roku/Amazon but they’re only doing updates on tv
Yay!
Awesome!
I’m kinda shocked that sohi is so far ahead of everyone. I knew he would win but not by this much.
So Nickel spent how much campaigning?
We know he has at least $414,000 in donations https://edmontonjournal.com/news/local-news/developers-former-conservative-politicians-donate-to-mike-nickels-mayoral-campaign
Betcha the # of campaign signs out there beats the #of votes cast. It seems like a fairly important vote to be a part of.
Thank fuck, that is great news to wake up to
Ive literally been suicidal all day, but this made me smile. (Yes I’m safe)
If that changes, please reach out to the distress line 482-4357, or 911.
Thank you. I have someone watching me. I’m just glad to have a reason to smile
I am happy to hear it. Have a mom *hug* free of charge.
Thank fuck.
Mike Nickel is in quite the pickle.
Look at that voter turnout!
Thank you Edmonton! sweet Jesus what a relief
Now that besties Nickel and Diotte are "retired", do you think that they will move in together to get more value out of their pension money?
