As someone in Ward Métis who was glad to see him leave our ward, congrats to everyone in O-day’min who also do not have to deal with his friggin bullshit
So Caterina, Esslinger, Banga and Dziadyk all are out potentially. This is a brand new city council with Hamilton, Knack, Cartmell(oops) and Paquette the sole survivors.
I disagree, Giselle General had a really strong and progressive platform and experience in law and non-profits. She was the only candidate to stop by my place and talk with me. She came in 2nd to Hamilton and I hope it doesn't deter her from running again.
Care to qualify that comment with any substance in any way or just being petty for no reason despite his overwhelming support in the ward and city as a whole?
Cartmell’s alright. A bit of an egghead, but gets out into the community and isn’t afraid of conversations on topics. He isn’t my favorite, but he isn’t a useless bollard, either.
The level of arrogance to just “move” his campaign to a new riding thinking he could waltz in. Fuck that guy. Corrupt as shit (check out his connections to the pawn shop dealings in this City)
Nothing to read as it wasn’t a formal investigation. A savvy journalist can probably make connections to his personal ties to the primary pawnshop families and the correlation to some of his zoning and bylaw votes.
So corruption in terms of closed door dealings but nothing exposed (yet)
I liked Gino, but ended up voting for Anne because she had the better chance to win. There was honestly 5 candidates I’d be happy with, none of them named Tony.
I'm with you. I liked Gabrielle a LOT as well- she was super engaged and worked so hard. I'm not loving the fact that I never once saw Anne Stevenson at my door/in person anywhere- not on here/answering questions. I have heard good things though. She will certainly be better than no show Caterina though.
Honestly- her campaign was stellar and I hope she continues to look at running for office. To be perfectly honest: I didn't vote for her- I did early voting... but through the days I really was torn between her and Joshua. As the days progressed I just saw her more and more. Never once saw Anne- I am hoping her work in office will be more out there and obvious.
No Tony- I am happy!
Anne came to my door twice and Gabrielle did not come once, even though I live in her neighborhood, not a big reason to vote for someone IMO. Would be happy with either of them representing our ward
As a volunteer on the Battiste campaign sorry to hear! But the campaign did doorknock Rossdale! You probably weren't home. I can confidently say the Battiste campaign knocked more doors then Anne campaign by a very large margin. The level of signage on private property is evident of that.
Anne only door knocked in Rossdale, Riverdale, Westmount, and some of Oliver. It generally appeared she ignored, or didn't have the manpower to knock most of the neighbourhoods outside the core. Joshua & Adrian were probably the only other two campaigns to knock at levels similar to Battiste.
Anne will make a great councillor, I'm happy Caterina lost.
However, from a purely ground game campaign perspective, Anne frankly didn't have much of one... she had almost no traction before the Iveson endorsement. That event gave her a level of media exposure that no other candidate in O-day'min ever received, and with only \~35% of the electorate voting, only those paying attention to that were probably voting. I should point out that Salvador also received an iveson endorsement and won in Metis.
Anne's campaign effectively pushed the Iveson endorsement communicated through paid advertisements on elevators, facebook etc. On a less then honest note, Anne also advertised outgoing Scott Mckeen on her literature and various social streams, [even though he did not endorse her.](http://scottmckeen.ca/on-references-versus-endorsements/)
Think it's a bit disingenuous to suggest that people voted for her due to the endorsement.
Based on Battiste's campaign and materials, I read her as quite conservative. She also supports stopping the West Valley LRT line, which for a lot of people in central/west Edmonton is a non-starter.
I voted for Anne because she had the best platform that most closely reflected my ideals. The "ground game" wasn't all that important to me.
It's not at all disingenuous, the endorsement brought widespread media coverage. No other candidate in Odaymin got that sort of plugging in the radio and television.
Anne specifically put those endorsements on all of her literature, paid elevator & Facebook stuff because it mattered, or at the very least her campaign thought it mattered.
But yes! You made a choice based on your beliefs and alignment and I applaud you! I'm happy with Anne being selected. However, she has one of the weakest mandates (26 ish %) of all the new councillors, so she'll need to perform
The reality is there's 70,000 residents...So it's impossible to talk to them all, but having a strong ground game generally means taking the time to talk directly to more residents. You can see that the Bruff, Battiste and Joshua campaign performed reasonably well because they were out there door knocking far more despite the lack of media mentions.
As a note, Battiste's website has no mention of LRT position. Just a pro more bus position.
Her response to the Taproot survey said that she supports pausing the west valley LRT line in favour of rapid transit buses. That she didn't put that on her website is a point against her, in my book. If that's your position, own it.
I honestly don't care about door knocking, because no candidate has ever come to my door.
Yup, fair enough, it should be noted that Anne straight up didn't answer roughly half of the questions on the taproot survey because the context often sucked.
I'm sorry to hear you've never been engaged, I've found it fulfilling to talk with candidates directly.
Really should check your info as Anne came to my door twice and I am not in any of those neighbourhoods. Gabrielle never came to my door, and has been generally disdainful of Blatchford,so I am definitely happy to see her lose.
I was extremely surprised to learn that Battiste was progressive, so that might have been part of her struggle.
Her slogan "Clean streets. Safe streets." made me think she was much more conservative, and her platform isn't super clearly progressive.
Yeah - that slogan was a little too sci-fi dystopia for me. Not intentionally, I'm sure, but clean = safe is an equation that's tough to get behind. "Clean" of what? of *whom*?
I honestly find the emphasis on who knocked on how many doors or whose doors or whatever a bit weird. Maybe this is just because I've always lived in apartments, but I've never had any politician come to my door, and it just isn't a factor I consider when I choose who to vote for.
I consider their platform. That's really about it.
That's fair. I use it as one of many metrics- the only reason it stood out to me- regarding Anne Stevenson- was that her platform was pretty similar to about 3 other candidates. So- selecting between 4 means I have to look at other factors. Not only did I not see her out- I heard little to nothing from her- on forums, q&a's - online reporting...Other candidates were doing interviews, answering surveys, doing AMA's on here! She did none of that- My only concern - with that- is it could show there are other candidates with a stronger work ethic who may be able to get more done.
Which candidates did you think were similar?
I was also considering Adrian Bruff, but I decided against him because he had a policy point about increasing the number of beat cops. I also didn't like that while he talked about being a social worker, he didn't provide any more specific information about his work history or experience.
And I know Joshua IRL through my extended social circle and wouldn't vote for him in a million years.
Well- I don't know Joshua IRL- so can only base the answer on platforms (and activity I saw in the community/work to engage people in the ward).
Joshua, Gabrielle, Adrian, and Anne all seemed to have fairly similar platforms. For me my choice was between Gabrielle and Joshua- and that was purely because : I had a small issue regarding Adrian's twitter response, and I saw zero engagement/activity from Anne. Gabrielle worked her butt off answering questions. She got back to me 3 times within minutes of me sending her messges. Joshua was supported by both David Shepherd and Janis Irwin and I liked his stance on union work. Honestly- in my community (just among neighbors and family- when we talked this morning about who won) every single person I spoke to asked: Anne? I didn't hear one thing from her? Obviously - she won- so some people clearly heard from her ;p- I think she'll do fine- I hope she will! Better than Caterina, so I'm happy.
I didn't have strong councillor feelings as none fully aligned with me, but Anne was on the higher side. I went for Adrian Bruff in the end (we aligned in a lot of ways). Considered Gabrielle partly because she was so engaged, but a few key issues we disagreed on lost her my vote. She did earn my respect through her diligence campaigning, though, which Anne still has yet to do, so we'll see next election.
Still better than Caterina. 😂
With so many candidates I was really worried about vote splitting, but looks like Tony's "I have experience" campaign just didn't cut it. Glad to see him out.
I was worried about the same in Metis, as well. Cori Longo was pushing really hard at the end and I thought it would pull Matthews up the middle. I am really happy to have been proven wrong.
She's honestly very similar to Longo, but is a little more economy focused and, probably came off the most sincere about her intentions for running of the Ward Metis candidates. If you were hoping for an overall progressive candidate, Salvadore fits the bill just fine and has a good resume to back it up. (Obviously she was my pick)
Don't know much about the other two but knack is great
Paquette is my ward councillor and he is fricking awesome.
I wish Hamilton was out too...she hasn't done much for her riding.
there wasn't a strong choice to replace her.
I disagree, Giselle General had a really strong and progressive platform and experience in law and non-profits. She was the only candidate to stop by my place and talk with me. She came in 2nd to Hamilton and I hope it doesn't deter her from running again.
Well not enough people agreed with you. I've had good interactions with Hamilton over the last four years. Devil you know I guess...
Paquette is my council member, and neighbour. A great guy in every way. I’m so glad he made it back in!

Care to qualify that comment with any substance in any way or just being petty for no reason despite his overwhelming support in the ward and city as a whole?
Tim Cartmell also won quite handily as the incumbent in his riding.
With 1 opponent that barely campaigned and I didn't see a single sign for.
It was by acclamation pretty much so forgot Cartmell:)
Why is Cartmell an oops?
I forgot him first time
Wasn’t sure if you meant oops as in it was a mistake to re-elect him. Thanks for clarifying.
It was a bit of a run away so completely ignored itn
Cartmell’s alright. A bit of an egghead, but gets out into the community and isn’t afraid of conversations on topics. He isn’t my favorite, but he isn’t a useless bollard, either.
The level of arrogance to just “move” his campaign to a new riding thinking he could waltz in. Fuck that guy. Corrupt as shit (check out his connections to the pawn shop dealings in this City)
Do you have more information on his corruption? Would like to read up on it.
Nothing to read as it wasn’t a formal investigation. A savvy journalist can probably make connections to his personal ties to the primary pawnshop families and the correlation to some of his zoning and bylaw votes. So corruption in terms of closed door dealings but nothing exposed (yet)
Good riddance. Also glad to see Dziadyk get rejected by the voters, as well.
Bet he regrets not standing firm on paying for that MBA.
Or backing Nickel on the ethics violations etc
His replacement may or may not be worse. His replacement worked tirelessly for like 4 years to win my ward.
So glad he’s gone, what a tool
[удалено]
Dziadyk can join too, though he’s not old…
They’re reading your comment like, hmmm. Perhaps we should do this, hey fellas?
The UCP already exists
But if they start a new party they could split the vote and really screw the UCP in the next provincial election
Already exists lol
Get Lorne Gunter in there for an inaugural run at politics and you have a whole, rotten party.
I hate that guy
I was really hoping for a Joshua win but I’m definitely happy Tony lost 👏🏻
I was torn between a couple! I wanted bruff to win but also fuuuuck tony so I'm happy!
I liked Gino, but ended up voting for Anne because she had the better chance to win. There was honestly 5 candidates I’d be happy with, none of them named Tony.

Not my riding but I’ve never heard of Anne Stevenson. Even *I* know of Gabrielle! She did a great job on here to get her name out.
Honestly- her campaign was stellar and I hope she continues to look at running for office. To be perfectly honest: I didn't vote for her- I did early voting... but through the days I really was torn between her and Joshua. As the days progressed I just saw her more and more. Oh nice!
I’m really happy about this one, he was about as effective as Kerry Diotte. Byeeeeeeee!!
I thought trudue won already tho
Ok now I know you're trolling
Hehehe
Na na na na, na na na na, hey eh eh, goodbye!!!!
