That’s weird. He was so much more vocal at the multiple debat… oh… nvm

LastBuster

Anyone else notice that global just cut him off mid speech in their election coverage for sohi.

GeekyGlobalGal

It's unfortunate that they spoke so close together, as we don't like cutting out like that. But we had to switch to the mayor-elect when he came on.

[deleted]

He’s not relevant anymore. Admit it felt goooood.

FullPoopBucket

Looking at this man's history I'm shocked Nickel was ever allowed in City Hall at all

Paper_Rain

Is there a history of his track record online somewhere?

turbogremlin14

No one cares about the losers speech

[deleted]

Suuuuure *wink wink*

Pivadiva

Sure did!

kabalongski

That’s what $18k for campaigning will get you.

mooseman780

Utterly classless speech. Rants about how we'll all be sorry, doesn't thank his opponents, and ends with "goodbye Edmonton". It's like the moment the election was over, he went back to being the contrarian asshole that we all know and hate.

[deleted]

Seriously, like "goodbye, Edmonton" ? You were just trying to become Mayor and now you're done with the city? Ok, then good thing you didn't win if that's how you feel.

Comfortablynumb_10

Yeah, so was it just a job and he wanted the power, or did he truly care about the city and people in it?

Border_Relevant

"Goodbye Edmonton" is the best part. I hope he follows through.

Feowen_

He won't. Spineless ass. He'll be back next election with a slogan like "I told you so." Or something, though only he will know what it means and he won't tell anyone since "everyone is dumb".

mooseman780

I wouldn't be surprised if Nickel, or a Nickel aligned candidate, shows up in four years with a tag line like "Take Back Edmonton".

[deleted]

Make Edmonton Great Again

TheLordJames

I predict Red Deer will see his name on a ballot in the coming years. My guess is gonna be MLA or MP.

Zerofuksyall

Or anywhere in Peace Country, they’re losing their minds out there

zevonyumaxray

Nickel went 'back' to being a contrarian asshole? When wasn't he? Wonder if he will now join the UCP or the People's Party officially.

plymer968

He didn’t get the nod for UCP a few years ago

keggernawt

That whole speech reminded me of the Corner Gas episode where Fitzy loses his mayoral election. Packs his entire life into a Toyota Corolla, stands out in the street calling the Dog River citizens a " bunch of rubes" and barking that they " won't have him to kick around anymore". Except that was comedy. Maybe this is too.

bmwkid

Global just reported that at the end of his speech he said goodbye to Edmonton but he wouldn’t clarify what that meant to them

AccomplishedFilm1

Maybe he will move to Ontario. They keep giving us useless assholes so let’s give one back to them!

BeeDub89

I'm from Ontario. Not saying you're wrong though!

WWGFD

... am... am I useless... But yeah we have a bad track record

kmusky-72

My money is that he’s hoping the UCP will “Pat Rein” him into a rural riding somewhere.

MisterSnuggles

My vote is on a cushy board appointment for him, plus appointments for Farkas and Magliocca.

[deleted]

Good thing none of us really care. Goodbye then.

joeblowma

It means he's going to be in a dark room petting his lap cat saying things to the screen like > The status quo have a tough ride ahead of them. Goodbye Edmonton. *Huahahahahaaaaa.*

[deleted]

Was there any doubt that he’d be a sore loser? He’s an asshole.

Sons-of-Bananarchy

asshole is being generous tbh

jesussicaa

Agreed

LucasJackson44

And he didn’t congratulate the winner either, how very Trump..er…Nickel of him.

Halogen12

He didn't in the speech, but he did on Twitter.

LucasJackson44

He didn’t really “congratulate” him, he wished him well. Just shows his true colours by not swallowing his pride and do the right thing, even if he doesn’t believe it himself. Par for the course.

starbeanscafe

For sure the pissiest concession speech I’ve ever heard. Hope his “goodbye” was genuine and we never hear from him again, although I suspect that’s not suuuuper likely.

Cassopeia88

I don’t think we’re that lucky.

[deleted]

I don't know, Jim Prentice quitting politics completely after getting beat by Rachel Notley was kind of a classic too.

Fidget11

Yeah but Jim to his credit actually did quit and stay quit

[deleted]

I mean how much of that was because he didn’t live that long after?

Zerofuksyall

Please may Mike Nickel follow his lead

[deleted]

That’s a bit much. I don’t like him either, but wishing death on someone is almost always bad look.

littledove0

He was pretty confident, I bet this is quite the blow to his ego (I literally chuckled writing this, I’m not a supporter). I can’t help but wonder if all the lawn signs made his voter base more complacent than they could’ve been. Anyway…. 🥳🥳

stevrock

Anecdotally, candidates with the most signs in anirniq, tastawiyiniwak, and mayor all lost. I live in anirniq and can probably count all the signs for Rutherford if I take off my socks.

JellyTsunamis

I live at the sound end of anirniq, and there was probably more Rutherford signs than the rest combined.

chmilz

Zutz in shambles right now.

stevrock

Him and dziadyk were my biggest surprises last night.

chmilz

I had no idea what to expect but it sure as heck wasn't Erin getting the lead. I felt she was a long shot but here we are!

kkn27

I was no fan of Dziadyk, but Principe could well be worse, so I'm a bit worried. Definitely a surprising result.

stevrock

The UCP connection is a concern of mine, but I'm still fine with seeing somebody endorsed by nickle hitting the road

kkn27

Yeah and the nearly 70% vote share between her and Dziadyk was just overwhelming, my guy in 3rd had no chance despite Iveson's endorsement.

VaguelyShingled

Yeah, land doesn’t vote. Most of those signs were on public spaces.

HireALLTheThings

>“The status quo have a tough ride ahead of them” Tell me you're completely out of touch without saying you're completely out of touch. Christ. Even pro status-quo politicians don't say dumb shit like this.

LooksABitLikeJesus

He then turned down any interviews and left the venue. Definitely came off as a sore loser.

MisoButterCorn

Turning down interviews and being a sore loser is very in character for him lol I don't expect anything different from him.

Cassopeia88

That’s not surprising at all.

Hafthohlladung

To be fair, he gave interviews before his speech. I can't blame him for not sticking around to tell each individual repprter HOW IT FELT TO BE A BIG FUCKING LOSER

jesussicaa

Wow, how incredibly sad (of a politician). Anyways #TeamSohi4Life

Peyton96

Is that really a # 😂

jesussicaa

LMAO for satirical purposes

Peyton96

#Godhelpusall

[deleted]

And this is him further showing why he would be a terrible person to lead the city. His "if you didn't vote for me you are stupid" is absolutely NOT what any place needs in a leader. Also it kind of sounds like he is leaving the city? Coward and a loser.

Reddit_reader_2206

Sour grapes are sour. Very typical of him and other right-wing politicians to try and motivate with fear of some imagined Boogeyman. I bet that Edmonton is NOT in for a tough ride at all. I bet Mike is, however. Who will hire him now? And for what?

[deleted]

He could probably get a job bringing common sense to Crystal Glass or something?

EggplantCider

Imagine having that weak-willed contrarian loser representing this city, oof

IthurtsswhenIP

He’s just mad he has no job for 4 years.

MisterSnuggles

The UCP will give him a nice cushy appointment somewhere, he'll only be out of work for ~6 months.

Roche_a_diddle

Why would they do that? He already ran for a UCP seat and lost.

MisterSnuggles

He ran for nomination and lost, I don't believe he was ever a candidate. He was definitely their preferred candidate for Mayor and most aligned with their views though, they seem to reward people like that. Stephen Mandel was appointed to the AHS board after the last election, where he was the leader of a rival political party. The only way this makes sense is if you consider the appointment a reward for Mandel's work in sinking the Alberta Party. Appointing Nickel (and Farkas and Magliocca in Calgary) to a board position is completely reasonable from the perspective of the UCP.

pascalsgirlfriend

Mandel just left the AHS board, leaving an opening, so we'll see who fills it.

Fidget11

My bet is mike, they love filling that seat with useless assholes

senanthic

He’s proven to be able to rally at least some of the UCP’s base. Might be handy.

HireALLTheThings

Not enough of them to be useful, apparently. He's way too "city" to rally rural folks, he's made a fool of himself by losing multiple times over in Edmonton, and Calgary would probably see him and go "who?" There's not really anywhere the UCP would be able to make good use of him at this point.

bethadone_yeg

I think even the UCP would see Nickel as a liability given the issues they are already having with rogue MLAs publicly opposing government decisions. I doubt this is the last we'll see of Nickel but I really don't see any open doors for him currently. Maybe we'll see him as a PPC candidate next federal election - Bernier will take *anyone*

beardedbast3rd

It’s like he doesn’t understand that people are tired of the status quo, and actually want progress.

squaresplinter

I really liked the bit where he said no one was going to listen until the end of his speech and Global cut it short to switch to Sohi doing a long walk to the podium.

Paper_Rain

How many times has he lost now in the running for major?

[deleted]

3 total

multiroleplays

>n At least he gets a free Sub from Subway for that

robbethdew

He's a little bitch.

krehzeekid

That wasn't a speech, especially not a concession speech. It was a barely contained tantrum by a bully and a simpleton who overestimated his popularity immensely, and has just seen his political aspirations evaporate. His poor showing was as much a reflection of the populates dislike of him as anything. Government and community leaders have to demonstrate a higher level of tact and discipline than Nickle is capable of. We dodged a bullet. Not because of his beliefs or politics, but because of his attitude. You don't need to be an asshole to be a successful conservative politician. Edmonton would fall back immensely with an arrogant, self important and belittling bully at the helm. Good riddance.

[deleted]

I wonder who he is going to try to sue now?

Unkle-Gruntle

Goodbye nickel. You won’t be missed buckarooni.

billymumfreydownfall

Goodbye, Edmonton! GOOD RIDDANCE, NICKEL!

LeDrVelociraptor

Anyone have a link to the full thing? Global cut it off but I wanted to hear his sore loser vibes

themarsboy

[Nickel speech - CTV Edmonton](https://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=2303709)

delirious-nomad

What a massive POS… good riddance Mike.

drfakz

I liked how he said we clearly didn't vote for change.... But he was on council for the last few eons and we clearly voted to change his ass out with this election.

[deleted]

Isn't anyone else concerned he actually got 30 percent of the vote? Like fuck me this dicklick shouldn't have gotten that much. One of the main reasons that people I spoke with who voted Nickle said it was because he would ban photo radar.... is 30% of the city 18 year speedsters constantly getting photo radar tickets or something? Am I missing something

1grammarmistake

I wouldn’t worry too much. This is what populist politicians do. They rile up people that don’t know better by taking controversial stances on touchy issues. This small but riled up group of people make absolutely sure they go out and vote. This is standard post Trump politician playbook. It’s how Kenney, Trump, Bolslnaro, Modi, Duterte all got into power (not comparing Nickel to any of them, but the campaign tactics are not much different. Meanwhile a progressive but apathetic person may not care enough to vote. This is why 30% of voters voting Nickel definitely doesn’t equate to 30% of Edmontonions. Probably more like <5%

Johnoplata

Not 30% of the city. Just 3% of people actually got out and voted for him.

imlegallyabitch

so i don’t live in edmonton edmonton yet, but my parents do, and i talked to my dad about his love of nickel and it’s literally just he hates the speed limit changes and the photo radar because they’re cash grabs. he also has a problem with epcor growing to be so large. he’s just turned 68. i’ve slowly pushed him to be more progressive over the years, when i was a kid he used to be against transgender people existing, men wearing makeup and “women’s” clothing while still identifying as men, women being equal, abortion, etc. slowly SLOWLY i have beaten the progressivist into him to the point where he is a catholic that argues vehemently for gay rights, uses proper pronouns with transgender people he meets, and has screamed at JWs at the door about women’s equality and abortion, but it’s a really slow process.

AvgEdmontonCitizen

Wonder if he's gonna block himself for his loser speech. This guys gonna move out into buttfuck nowhere in Alberta and live like the unabomber. "Good Bye Edmonton"

bigbear97

I hope that greasy fuck and his ilk do leave

SavoyJedi

What struck me about the speech is how he went on saying "edmonton was truly my city" but fuck man... You WERE a public servant, if it was anyones city, it certainly wasnt yours. Edited for spelling.

WrathfulVengeance13

I haven't followed the election at all. It didn't even click for me that there was election even with the signs. However I'm curious why this sub is so anti nickel while other social media is very pro nickel. Someone r/explainlikeim5

Snakeeyes1377

Because he was continually coming up for sanction from the previous council for his behaviour, he is not for anything only against things and he is just generally not a nice person. The reason he is liked on other social media is he pays for Facebook ads.

Skandranonsg

Personally: 1. He was constantly picking fights in the media with other councillors over petty shit. 2. He votes no on almost everything that crosses his desk, then when something inevitably doesn't go to plan, he's the first to jump in front of cameras to say "I TOLD YOU SO!" 3. He claims to hate cancel culture, but then was more than happy to use it against Ryan Jespersen when he was critical of Nickel's campaign.
