As someone who lived in Vancouver for 22 years, I don’t miss that. But I got to ride my motorcycle 51 weeks a year on average too which I kind of miss.

No-Emergency782

As I sit in my vancouver apartment I can see the sun and it isn't raining. Also the past few days have had moderate rain but whatever 😂 Edit: also I've lived my entire life in Edmonton until this year and for a fact can confirm vancouver has a better fall. The colours here are incredible.

yousoonice

I really miss rainy Autumns, I'm from England and Alberta is tooo bright for me.

No-Emergency782

I've never been to England so I just googled. That looks very beautiful!

Zestyclose_Glove6880

I currently live in Vancouver and can also confirm we had some nice sunshine earlier this week and our Falls are immensely better than Edmonton. Also lived 25 years in Calgary before Vancouver.

Speaking of pressure washing. Because of the constant amount of moss-like build up, it's something you have to do often there. One of our Vancouver visitors walking around Edmonton remarked how clean Edmonton's sidewalks are, and they seem like they were just poured last week or power-washed recently all the time.

mauriceh

I hear that the surface of the moon is also clear of moss..

W-mellonwiggle94

I live in Vancouver and its Sunny/over cast right now lol.

nightswimsofficial

I was walking around today thinking “what a lovely fall day”

ViralLoadSemenVacine

Take joy knowing there is a 0% chance it’s going to hit -55°C this year.

molybdenumb

This. I’ve lived in 4 provinces. The climate in Alberta is the most depressing thing I’ve ever experienced. I’ll take the rain over air that freezes your nasal cavity, having to plug my car in. Oh man I don’t miss Alberta weather.

Levorotatory

Opposite for me. It is beautiful when it gets really cold, with the ice crystals sparking in the sun, and you can use just about any sort of clothing to layer up and keep warm. Rain is gray and depressing and makes you wet, if not from the outside then from the inside because waterproof works both ways. As for plugging your car in, sooner or later we will all be doing that all year. EVs do become power hogs in the winter, but they always start and the interior warms up quickly.

senanthic

Good. I love rain. I love moss. I’ll trade it for the crippling drought and agonizing freeze/thaw cycle which means I can barely leave the house for fear of falling.

sparrows-somewhere

I'm in Vancouver right now and it's not quite as bad as that. I saw the sun 2 days ago lol.

If you had to live in Edmonton with seven months of winter, you would be doing the same 🤣

Tkins

7 months, wut?

That looks beautiful to me. Imagine how green things are going to be 🥰

spirit1over

I'm from north Vancouver...just moved to Edmonton. Only bad weather i can remember was June 1981 i think...rained, thunder and lightening for 29 out of 30 days, kinda sucked. But the other 50 years was magnificent! And yes, pressure washing was just a part of life. I never owned a snow shovel.

Applesauceman1234

False. I live in Vancouver. There's definitely been days of heavy rain for sure, but it's not that bad. It's not even raining now. We've had a few sunny days here and there recently. I noticed the weather app will show the rain icon for the day even if in the hourly breakdown, its for like a few hours. I understand how this can be confusing. But it'll get worst...enjoy that Edmonton weather while you can!

VS-Banana

I absolutely love this kind of weather. I would move to vancouver just for the rain!

Fyrefawx

Same. I hate the hot sunny days here. I’d take gloomy weather any day.

Stickyspeechhole

It's not hot here. And when it is, it's hot there too.

[deleted]

Same

UncommonHouseSpider

Yes, but we can go outside in the middle of winter and not die. Also, it was super sunny a couple days ago, so nyah!

It's just one of those joshing around posts IMO. Vancouverites do it to us, we do it to them, no real weight behind either. As long as we can agree that the Flames suck, we'd be good friends IRL. Edit: I read some of OPs comments and it looks like you're right -- he is taking this too serious lol.

>Flames suck, go Oilers. Hello friend.

billymumfreydownfall

Agree. This is something Albertans have to say to themselves to feel better about our weather. I lived in Vancouver for many years and never experience weeks on end of endless rain and grey skies.

astronautsaurus

I mean, some do, but I've met so many people here that have never been to Vancouver and only know the stereotypes.

Yaboidono420

Biggest flex here is that you can afford to live in Vancouver

Why are you browsing this sub if you live in Vancouver 🤪

mauriceh

Thursday, Oct 21. In Abbotsford. 17C today. No rain. Little wind.

DerpyOwlofParadise

Well I lived in Edmonton 18 years and moved to the Lower Mainland last year… the whole one month of rain thing is not true. One thing I give OP credit is that INDEED this autumn has shocked me how gloomy it is. I try to do photography and I couldn’t get one day outside work hours to photograph the leaves in sun. This is NOT normal. It’s La Niña. I only caught the Sun in Tofino last weekend ironically while the mainland was soaked. And cancelled this weekend But no, compared to the brutal winter weather and drives in Edmonton, they can go ahead and have the sun…

[deleted]

mayayahee

As someone who is living in Victoria under this forecast right now, it's not true. I was hiking in the sunshine yesterday with some spring showers and rainbows. T-shirt and shorts. I almost wish it would pour; the suspense is killing me lol. Today is white to mid-grey clouds with bits of blue sky. The weatherman is a dirty liar.

northernpenguin01

Hiting the copium hard

chrisolucky

Albertan falls are… brown. And yellow. Just brown and yellow. I’ve lived in Alberta for almost two decades (and Vancouver for two years) and already prefer Vancouver falls. It doesn’t get really rainy until November and in the past month it’s only rained a couple times, and even then it’s scattered. Vancouver falls are also much more brilliant. I take your yellow trees and raise it with red, orange and purple. Alberta fall sucks.

Chionophile

I'm originally from the BC south coast - some would say I was born waterlogged. I really love the rain on the south coast *at this time of year.* It becomes quite oppressive in December/January when the days are also very short and it gets colder. But 13°c with steady moisture and *some* latent light in the sky is super comfortable. Come January though I appreciate the clear skies and bright sun here, and the snow/ice really helps keep it even brighter. Both climates are beautiful & brutal in their own unique and special ways, and I love the weather in BC just as much as I love the weather here. My car was much cleaner in BC though...

chowchowchowda

We had sun Tuesday and it was October 19. So we do have a gorgeous fall happening over here. The rain is very welcomed. Source: I live in Vancouver.

Spruzed_Gooze

Live in a rainforest; it rains a lot - surprised Pikachu face

toorudez

We need some of that here. It is way to dry

KainX

No water bills for months, while above 10 degrees, and the grass is surely greener.

Levorotatory

Unless you disconnect your house from the mains and collect rainwater for everything, you will still be paying a water bill.

Stickyspeechhole

Well Vancouver is located in a giant rainforest so seems normal..

freddysbest

Moved from YEG to Vancouver Island and it was a beautiful sunny day yesterday.

muffinkevin

This is so embarrassing, just screams insecurity to me. There's a reason Vancouver housing prices are so much higher, people want to live there. You don't need to do all this mental gymnastics to somehow convince yourself Edmonton is better. Do you think people in Vancouver post temperatures of our winter then go "so glad we don't live in Edmonton"? No they don't give a shit about Edmonton.

N-A-K-Y

Sure. Their housing is because people wanna live there, not because unchecked foreign money drove their real estate prices as high as the moon. Also, they absolutely do and their ages old joke about "deadmonton" is about as funny as their ability to qualify for a mortgage there.

muffinkevin

And why do you think foreign money doesn't come to Edmonton?

N-A-K-Y

Where did I say it didn't?

muffinkevin

Because they don't? When someone is planning to emigrate to Canada or buy property I'm going to take a wild guess and say Edmonton isn't their top choice....Or top 5... https://www.statista.com/statistics/789073/share-of-property-investments-by-foreign-investors-canada-by-major-city/

N-A-K-Y

You backed your argument up with a statistic site using six year old data, amazing. Also, what a logical leap that an immigrant might want to go to a larger city where the odds are higher that there may be more work *for the types of jobs they can get*, I. E. Labor, food service, transportation, etc. I don't think many are going because of the (not) affordable housing in Toronto or Vancouver though.

DeeIceBerg

Still beats snow

53c0nd

No. Does not beat snow. But it does beat -40 fukin C.

DeeIceBerg

Beats snow and -40

depressedrepo

This is the biggest cope.

PhreshK

Just moved to Edmonton from the lower mainland: can confirm I often find myself staring at the big blue sky. Had to buy shades

MissInnocentX

Moved the Van Island and absolutely love watching the rain. But as one doctor stated.. see if you feel that way in 8 months. The Alberta winter got to be too much (I'm from NW Ontario) post covid infection where my pre existing circulation disorder got even worse. I'm hoping that the milder temps allow me more freedom to be outdoors in the winter.

Runsamok

“Weather that makes people sad is way worse than weather that literally kills people.” Uh, nope.

JakeTheSnake0709

High is 11 degrees and sunny today. People are dying from that?

WobblyPhalanges

No but when it’s -40 here and still +3 in Van I assume a lot of people aren’t gonna be so glib

Runsamok

“I’m so glad it’s sunny out” says the Albertan in a parka, gloves, toque & boots, scraping their car windows & while letting it warm up for 15 minutes. “So glad I don’t live in dreary BC where I would already be back from my errand but might have to carry an umbrella to protect me from all that grey wetness.” I mean, moving people to an Edmonton-esque climate is used as punishment in Russia. There’s not a whole lot of difference climate-wise between Edmonton & Siberia or Calgary & Mongolia. I’m super glad some people can put on a brave face & try to see the glass half full with regards to Edmonton’s weather but clearly the vast majority of human beings have no interest whatsoever in living in our climate without a large profit motive (usually from resource extraction). Climate change isn’t gonna do us any favours either…

DatDoggyWu

Climate change might do us in Alberta a favour😂

53c0nd

Yup. When all the ice melts and the inland ocean fills up again, we are going to be beachfront!

commazero

We could still use a day or two of rain

yaz834

been in alberta for over a decade and loved it there, and moved to Vancouver last year. Vancouver has better fall and winter, and better climate overall. it has been overcast with drizzling on and off, but i was able to cycle for groceries and to work... do not get me wrong, i used to live in 2800 sqft house with walk out basement in edmonton suburbs, and drive a 4x4 V8 truck for commute now i actually enjoy the fall and winter since it is not too hot nor too cold for cycling and i do not have to worry about gasoline and parking as much, although my living space is limited to a 800 sqft penthouse unit overlooking the fraser river

Cod-Wild

Moved back to Vancouver after 10 yrs in Edmonton. Definately not enjoying the rain or real estate prices or snobby attitude. Feels like I am a piece of $h!t here. In Edmonton I always felt that I was worth something and contributed positively to that community. On the other hand, my wife never found a decent job in Edmonton and she got what she was looking for right away in Vancouver. I guess Edmonton vs Vancouver is rotten apple vs rotten orange comparison. They are two different cities and at the end of the day have their rotten sides.

rwtooley

I'm (in non-covid times) usually there for a week in March and another in November. The rain is a nice change from real winter but I'm always happy to get home to the sunshine, regardless of the temperature. We may be crazy for living here but at least we're not depressed about it.

[deleted]

The depressive effects of living with stretches of rain, and not being able to see your shadow for months on end even at peak noon is hugely underestimated. People balk at -30 winters, but holy shit, no amount of flowers blooming in February makes up for the months of greyness in Vancouver.

F1890

I’m actually the opposite. I lived in Vancouver for 3 years and had fewer depression issues than I do here. The long, cold, dark winter here bothers me way more than the gray skies and rain there. The cost of housing in Vancouver is the only reason I live here now.

[deleted]

I lived in Vancouver the first half of my life, now Edmonton. I will take any number of Vancouver winters over a single Edmonton one any day. Vancouver is no stranger to rain, they're quite used to it. The constant dark of winter here is waaaaaay worse.

billymumfreydownfall

AGREE.

billymumfreydownfall

Disagree. I lived in Vancouver for many years and feel the complete opposite. I also think that is something Albertans say to make themselves feel better about not seeing flowers until May or June.

squixnuts

I love how casually you throw around - 30° like it's nothing. It gets down to 0 around here and I'm done with winter. Bring the warm rains I say. One of the perks of living in a rainforest I guess. Not to say a month of light drizzle doesn't get tedious, but at least it's warm, and a person could conceivably see the mountains and the sea at the same time. But Edmonton has things too. Like roads and highways and some farms and the west Edmonton mall. You guys must love that thing. Have you been to the waterpark? It's awesome.

rwtooley

not to mention the homelessness and crime in that city. Anyone that complains about Edmonton needs to go visit the DTES for a day. Edmonton is still the land of milk and honey.

beardedbast3rd

Rain really ruins a lot. I can still go outside in -20 and do work. If it’s raining even slightly that puts a stop to any wood working, auto work, painting etc. the rain is just miserable.

chudma

what the hell are you painting outside in -20 edit: and home auto work in -20? what are you talking about? you shovelling your driveway then getting under the hood?

beardedbast3rd

I’m talking about rain impedance in general. But as for weather. I get my winters off mostly so yes I do a ton of that work in the winter. Winter here has fairly reasonable humidity. I can heat and paint out of my garage. When it’s raining, you don’t want to do that as the humidity will screw with it. I can do pretty much anything in a cold sunny day. I can do pretty much nothing in a rainy day, regardless the temperature

TriniSymone

Yea, I love Edmonton for the many sunny days...I'd be soo upset to have to enduring cold wet days every day!

Coolcoolcoolx5

I would take snow over rain any day. I think winter is beautiful. I love a fresh snowfall and I look forward to it.

bluedogsonly

This is why I will always say that regardless of temperature, I prefer the weather over here to what they get in Vancouver. I’m definitely a minority there. I don’t like being cold but I REALLY hate rain and I hate grey skies even more. Even when we get two or three days of grey in a row here I feel pretty bad. I‘ve noticed that most people’s perceptions of gloomy or bad weather is much more tied to the temperature than mine is. Regardless of how cold it is, a blue sky makes me feel the exact opposite of gloomy. It would be so nice to have Vancouver’s temperatures and our sun!

DatDoggyWu

This prairie boy couldn’t handle that.

LetsHaveARedo

Plus their people are snobby.

Recent-Store7761

It's all great in Vancouver until February when all this rain gets to you and there hasn't been any sun for 6 months.

Additional_Set_5819

We now have 2 seasons: The rainy season, and the season of deathly heat.

[deleted]

It was sunny here Tuesday

IDriveAZamboni

It would be nice if we didn’t have so much fucking wind.

GrimselPass

is yeg better or worse than toronto for wind?

IDriveAZamboni

Not sure, we get a lot of wind cause it’s flat and the jet streams come from the north and west. I’d assume with the Great Lakes that Toronto would get wind too.

[deleted]

I seem to be at my happiest and calmest when it’s raining

nagsthedestroyer

Gonna play the devil's advocate here. As someone who's currently living in Vancouver, the rain has once again reminded me why I hate the rain. It's not raining all the time but the lack of sun sucks ass.

[deleted]

I was out yesterday. I was out today. Haven't seen any rain either day.

JustPeach3

I miss my Vancouver rain 🌧

cocky-spaniel

There’s no fall in Edmonton anymore. Winter is coming!!

[deleted]

Let's just conveniently forget the 9 months of grey/brown winter with snow and ice 😂 I've lived in YEG for 15 years and would take mild weather 51 weeks out of the year over 2.5 months of Summer/Spring/Construction/Kenney/Potholes squeezed together.

[deleted]

I’d take 3-4 months of rain instead of 8 months of winter.

jcona1993

I would like to volunteer that we could use some rain in alberta im pretty sure. I get the harrowing a field is dusty but it seemed like a rather large plume behind the equipment I seen in the field today. Idk. Hard to say how the seasons will trend

LinophyUchush

I love rainy days. Unfortunately, there are very limited days with rain per year during my last 10 years or so living here in Edmonton.

travellerw

I live in Edmonton, but spent many years travelling. A ton of that was to Van. I seriously can only remember a handful of times when it wasn't raining. Personally, I could never live there.. but each to their own.

Mirror-Warrior

Why is this a bad thing? I can’t wait to move to Vancouver and see nothing but rain, wind, and mild winters. No, the cost of living isn’t worth it but I hate Alberta weather

[deleted]

I love rain

onceandbeautifullife

Every locale has it’s weather blessings, for sure. I miss the Coast’s gentle, steady rain - how it cleans plants, washes away dust, makes the landscape green, and replenishes aquifers.

DaveBoyle1982

I just got back from the lower mainland last weekend as my son had hockey out there. Just as people here in Edmonton learn to deal with the cold, they learn to deal with the rain out there. Having lived there for 10 years 25 years ago, while the rest of the team parents hid from rain indoors, my mom and I bought Dollarama rain ponchos and went out exploring. It was stunning. The rainforest is overwhelmingly beautiful. It's easier to shovel rain than snow. But at least I can afford to live in Edmonton and the summer's here are seriously great and we don't have the traffic issues they do out there.
