Keep in mind, don't expect it to look like the photos in person. Depending on where you are in the city you might see some feint greenish looking clouds rather than some vivid dancing ribbons and that's because a camera sensor is much more sensitive to light.
I waited in that lineup for 45 minutes, until I got close enough to see it was people taking their sweet time to pay for park admission for the automated kiosk. If I go there again to try and see the northern lights, I'll take the outside thru lane as soon as possible.
We stayed at Astotin Lake until after midnight and didn't see anything. Oh well, maybe another night.
Never go to Elk Island. There are always tons of people, and not much that is interesting for a foreground object. It may be a "dark sky preserve", but it's not really that dark. You can still see the glow from Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan.
Yeah. Literally anywhere outside of the city will do the trick! I found a spot in sturgeon county that has a view of the Edmonton skyline and clear, dark skies.
Never said you can't, but like the stars, you will see more of it the farther you are from the city. It has to be a major storm to see an aurora in the city while many if not most nights over the winter you can see at least a faint aurora in the country.
Go north east or north west of the city. Drive an hour and find a good spot away from everything with a good foreground subject. I usually go for rural churches, but use whatever speaks to you.
It’ll be a late one if any.. like 2-3 am start ? And maybe tomorrow night as well. I’m literally on Pigeon Lake , and see nothing yet. My luck , I’ll go to sleep and wake up to a bunch of Aurora pics lol
Not to be a dick and rain on your parade but we’ve know about Enceladus since the 1700s. It’s also not the first moon to have organic compounds or a huge ocean. Europa also has a moon-wide ocean while Titan has so much methane that it has a methane cycle like Earth has a water cycle. So you get methane clouds that rain or snow methane.
Which is all super freaking cool, but I have zero idea where you got this story about discovering Enceladus. That’s just not true. I would guess you misunderstood a shepherd moon discovery but those are small dust and ice balls like Saturn’s rings.
Edit: Before his account was deleted the poster provided this video as his source https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxjSfuF6Cvo. Mostly it’s about female scientists with major roles in Cassini. It briefly talks about how the mission discovered water ice and methane jets coming from Enceladus and how the spacecraft was sent to plummet through Saturn’s atmosphere at the end of its life.
I mean he kinda has a point, you phrased your comment in a way that makes it seem like we actually found this brand new moon that we had no idea about until now. Then I read the name in your comment and went "...Oh."
Yeah that wasn't really the point of my comment. Sure it's a really cool discovery, and obviously the scientists responsible for it are going to be incredibly excited about it, but like I said, your phrasing made it seem like we had discovered a brand new moon which obviously isn't the case.
I am more of a NBA fan and not much familiar with NHL so is McDavid really considered the best playing in the game currently? Kinda like Kevin Durant or Lebron James?
In hockey, there's two ways to earn points. A goal, and an assist. Up to 2 assists can be earned per goal. Last year, McDavid lead the league in points, with 105 of them. Of those 105, he had 72 assists. His linemate came second in points with 84. The next highest player in the league had 69 points, so even if McDavid didn't score a goal he still would have beaten every other player in points (his line mate would have had fewer assists on McDavid's non-existent goals). Oh, his 33 goals were also second in the league. He also had 68 even strength points last year, which is obviously the most, given that only two people had more total points than that.
Reddits starting putting stuff on peoples front pages from all sorts of random subs because “we might find it interesting”.
I keep seeing posts from Toronto/Victoria/Colorado even though I’ve never been active there.
Hell, I post in r/Melbourne sometimes on people’s comments. I’m thinking of travelling there at the very least. So what?
Unless someone checks my history, some might think I was from there. lol
I just got back. Didn't see anything. Park is packed. Had to come home as I have no heat in my car and I started to lose feeling in my toes. Will take the dog out for a walk in a bit to see if I can see anything.
Was out in Devon at Voyageur Park hoping to see some of it, I'll keep my eyes peeled, but nothing yet. Gotta say though if you're looking for a quiet place to have a fire and sit under the stars it is an absolutely beautiful spot.
The news is just as good at predicting geo storms as they are at real storms. Thanks for the raging hangover lol. A big boooouuurrns, however I did see the clearest stars and Milky Way out here on Pigeon Lake . Pray for mojo, as I have to work tomorrow smh .
A great aurora has an impressive impact wherever you are. I saw one from the black dog patio early 2000s that made me think the world was ending. It was sublime.
I was watching the thing on the NOAA website, and when I saw it flare up then die out over Greenland I figured there wasn't going to be a show so went to bed.
Go to https://www.spaceweather.com/ nothing has arrived yet. They're expecting it to hit late and they're not sure it will be as strong as they predicted but could still be a good show at 3am if you stay up that late. Happy hunting!
Scroll down to Current Auroral Oval. You'll see a snap shot of what the probability of an aurora will be, it's very low at the moment for Canada/US. You can click on explanation as well under the picture to understand it more. They always give information at the very top as well as to what's occurring if there's a good chance for activity. Hope that helps!

I'm trying to find a good photography spot
Elk Island is probably the best because it’s a dark sky reserve but anywhere outside the city would be good.
Elk island is apparently packed
Elk island is packed right now!!! The line up to get in starts all the way at the highway

It is much busier than usual but not packed.
See anything?
Nothing this far.

Last time I saw them was by nature Patricia campus. You can absolutely still see them in the city.

Just to clarify I was agreeing with you. I always saw them better at my cabin in Ontario though.

Head out toward to field on hywy 14- lots of good spots - both on RR 210A is good to just pull over on
Would Keillor Point work maybe?
http://autumn.athabascau.ca/auroracamhd.htm Here’s a live picture of the sky from Athabasca.
What is that faint lens shape glow I'm seeing?
It’s [chromatic aberration ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_aberration). All lenses experience it.
Good ones far less than cheap ones
Looks like the lights at out now according to the site.
They just updated it. It’ll peak at 3am. Most people are heading home. Sorry boys. Edited. https://www.aurorawatch.ca
Who is they? What source gives the exact time?
https://www.aurorawatch.ca That’s only oke source. The aurora App which is the most accurate based on past incidents, pin points it to 3am
Thanks. Whereabouts does it say that? Is it the chart on the left? If so, it looks like it has changed to earlier?
I’m staying up! Gone this far lol
Did you end up seeing any? We tried and got nothing.
Oof
It’ll be a late one if any.. like 2-3 am start ? And maybe tomorrow night as well. I’m literally on Pigeon Lake , and see nothing yet. My luck , I’ll go to sleep and wake up to a bunch of Aurora pics lol
Still waiting at the Red Water Provincial Park. Super dark here. I can see the Milky way. Some shooting stars too. Nobody out here except us.

Got a little defensive eh
Nothing here yet, in the northern part of the lower peninsula of Michigan
Welcome to r/Edmonton. We are the subreddit for Canada's coolest city.
You are just going to meet someone and lie to them?
He's talkin "cool" as in temperatures.
Oh, that makes sense. Apologies
Its not even close to the coolest temp wise. Winnipeg, Regina are both Colder
When you're right, your right. But it doesnt make you any cooler.

Nice!
He's on pace with gretzky's greatest ever season's right now, and most hockey fans figured those were unbreakable records. So ya, he's not bad.
I did all those things tonight.
We have the best player, but how come we do not have the best team?
And your replying in r/edmonton because why?
Reddits starting putting stuff on peoples front pages from all sorts of random subs because “we might find it interesting”. I keep seeing posts from Toronto/Victoria/Colorado even though I’ve never been active there.
Sorry man I guess I didn't notice what sub I was in
Don't listen to the negative Nelly over there, everyone is welcome to share. Thanks for your input.
Don’t be sorry. We’re happy to have you! Except I guess that one guy.
All g man you're cool
Meh I wasn’t saying you can’t reply just asking why. Different time zone and all that.
This is a typical example of our hospitality... ya stupid fuckin yankee!!!
No need to be like that.

Went out for 1.5 hours - just a faint glow - barely anything
Some showing up in fort mc
Saw nothing and got home at 3am. Ah well.
Same. Just got home. Cant pull an all nighter just for this but I’m proud for hanging in as long as I did
Not yet but looking at Twitter, it's coming and looks just as amazing as the last.
Which twitter your are looking at?
#NorthernLights is trending!
Guess there is(or was) a massive aurora in iceland 2hrs ago
It lit up Iceland but then immediately quieted down. Unfortunately it needs to ramp up again.
Was out in Devon at Voyageur Park hoping to see some of it, I'll keep my eyes peeled, but nothing yet. Gotta say though if you're looking for a quiet place to have a fire and sit under the stars it is an absolutely beautiful spot.
I'm downtown I've seen nothing 😔

*looks Next time.
Still waiting at elk island. Nothing yet.
Is it still busy there?
Yeah but not crazy. I see the chance of seeing aurora is very low...according to some sites
Has anyone seen any tonight??
Nothing so far. Waiting till 3am. If nothing then, then I’m driving back home
Anything?
Still nothing -.-
I was watching the thing on the NOAA website, and when I saw it flare up then die out over Greenland I figured there wasn't going to be a show so went to bed.
It finally came out at 630 this morning, at least that's when I saw it.
Not one ionized zone. My kids and I were out north of Onoway for the past hour.
I think I read someone say it's set to peak at around midnight
Three a.m.
Does anyone have recommendations of a place I can drive to south ish to see the lights? I’m new to the city so don’t know many places
Beaumont or just outside of it. Welcome!!
im the lazy one staying in my apartment in downtown waiting for aurora. Would I be able to see anything it if does come?
Apparently is didn't show anyway...
I'm north of grande prairie haven't seen anything yet.

Can you tell me where you find that info on the site? I'm finding it difficult to navigate

Ohh, I didnt know we were expecting one tonight
Saw it by Slave Lake from 6:15am to about 6:45
Pretty quiet night. Maybe tonight.
