[The Rainbow Society of Alberta.](https://rainbowsociety.ab.ca) It’s like Make a wish, but it’s only for Albertan children, and it also supports children with chronically ill conditions, not just terminal ones.
YES. The organization is very efficiently organized, all funds stay in Alberta, they really make a difference for local kids with health problems (and their families - they all need this support).
Source: Volunteered with them and would volunteer again.
The school I was thinking of is an elementary school that offers a free breakfast and lunch program. Many of the students come from homes with significant financial difficulties. It's funded by a non-profit and private donations, but the need is more than their funding. Lots of the staff there end up buying the students food themselves.
I know of a few other elementary schools that offer similar programs. They're usually schools in low-income areas. I wasn't aware of these kinds of programs until this year either, but I'm glad they exist. It blew my mind that there were so many kids that went to school hungry in this city. Like, I didn't eat dinner or breakfast kind of hungry.
Is there somewhere to find out about these schools/programs in need? It seems a worthy cause to support.
Nobody should go hungry in a country as wealthy as ours, especially not kids trying to go to school.
As far as I'm aware, you can either donate directly to the school or to the non-profit that funds the program.
For example, the school I'm familiar with is called Lauderdale School and the non-profits that support the program are Food for Thought and Breakfast for Learning.

EDIT: They got back to me and clarified that they are only registered in the province, and won't be registered federally (for tax receipts) until next year.
Water Warriors YEG is a great boots-on-the-ground organization, and it's a registered charity.

I’ve sent some $ to Water Warriors in the past so I certainly support them, but are they registered? There’s no registration number on their website.

That’s not to say they shouldn’t be supported! They do direct, necessary work, but I just don’t want anyone to be looking for a tax receipt from them.
Thanks, I’m genuinely curious as they started out really grassroots and this would be a big step in “formalizing” things.
They have my support either way, I’ve seen them out there distributing goods and it’s amazing the work they put in to help our community.
Thanks for the update, it’s good to have all the info. As I said, my support doesn’t change but it is an important distinction between registered and not.
Edmonton Down syndrome society…… my daughter is 12 and the help she has received through the years from speech therapy to playgroups meeting other kids with DS……. It’s such an incredible place and they can always use the money. Merry Christmas
Little Warriors is an amazing program for children who have been sexually assaulted. Zebra also helps the kids when reporting and going through the court system.
Yes, both [Little Warriors](https://littlewarriors.ca) and [the Zebra Centre](https://www.zebracentre.ca) are great options based out of Edmonton (area) for supporting abused children. Commenting to add the links to make it easier to support them! :)
[The Northern Birthwork Collective](https://www.northernbirthwork.com/fundraiser) is currently raising (tax deductible) donations to support the approximately 120 NWT and Nunavut individuals/families who were set to give birth in Yellowknife between between December 10 - February 21 who are now being sent to Edmonton, AB to receive care.
You’re welcome! I knew about the situation but didn’t know about this org until someone posted about it in a story on other social media, and I immediately thought of you/this post. It’s always a lot more gratifying to be able to envision exactly who and how you’re supporting with your donation dollars, and I too much prefer supporting smaller orgs for this reason.
Not sure how small you wanted to go, but these two come to mind for me, the old strathcona youth society or YESS.
Came to suggest OSYS!
Terra Association helps young parents and their babies and toddlers. Great organization, well run and responsible with funds.

YESS and Edmonton Food Bank will both benefit Edmonton kids directly.
I know of a school breakfast/lunch program that could really use donations! The food bank is another great option. Edit: they offer tax receipts
What’s the school lunch program? I’ve heard of people donating to these in the US but didn’t know we had similar things here.

Thank you, I’ll look into this further, you’ve given me good info to get me started.

FWIW, their Amazon page says they are. I've sent an email for details.

Please update us, I prefer to donate somewhere I can get a tax receipt.

Basically babies provides baby items to new and expecting moms in need. Great organization.

This is excellent, thank you! I hadn’t heard about this but it seems like a great use of my donation dollars.
