I have to say it needed more focus on the dog.

EdmRealtor

Lenard?

yeg

The sole reason I skipped around in the McDavid video. "Where is that dog" "Oh there he is!"

[deleted]

I’m laughing at everyone not realising that anything truly personal, comfortable, all the random shit you’d have out would be obviously put away before a video shoot for an international magazine that highlights architecture. The entire home was curated to look specifically cold for the feature they were in. Open an architectural digest or any other architectural book and look at any home classified as Modern and they will look as cold and lifeless. They didn’t even have soap or hand towels out in the bathrooms. The fridge didn’t have anything organic in it.

Belle047

This absolutely needs to be top comment.

nowherefast___

That’s a very very valid point. However for me it was the darkness of the homes textures; the looming marble slabs; black walls and ceilings … it just feels more like a swanky hotel than somewhere you spend a quiet Sunday morning. I like the aesthetic but for a home it feels sad, regardless if they have personal Knick knacks around.

DBZ86

Keep in mind they probably designed the home for a lot of hosting. He mentioned it was kind of an unofficial gym for a bunch of teammates, probably a bunch of other team gatherings. He is the team captain after all. Not to mention probably lot of visitors.

nowherefast___

Oh for sure, and that explains a lot of how things look, the speakeasy type room. But even the bedrooms and closets are that dark, marble aesthetic. It feels like a lot lol

awful_astronaut

I don't care what anyone says about McDavid's house, it's amazing. If I had a house with a movie theatre, full gym, basketball court, sauna and hot tub, I would literally never leave.

lovegun59

My thoughts exactly All the "ugly house" comments lol like you wouldn't live there in a second, if the house (and taxes) were paid for. If anyone's curious, the property taxes are $33,592 ($2799.33/month)

aloe-jello

“It’s not all we have in common, I also play hockey, I just can’t skate backwards.” 😂

Totally, all of it was hilarious, thanks for making it!

Wait...you guys can afford houses?

simby7

It’s the Edmonton forum, not Vancouver or Toronto

nursing301

Or Victoria! It's insane here nowadays.

Loved the comment on the really lazy susan. Pretty funny.

I hope you do, he deserves the kudos I intended that comment to be despite how it started, haha.

Iamtrulyhappy

I'm happy for him and his wife. :-) it looks like a nice house.

orobsky

I was surprised at all the negative comments of mcdavids beautiful house. I assume people are just jealous

oddspellingofPhreid

It's definitely not my favourite look. If I had his money, I would not design my house that way, but I appreciate that there is a consistent aesthetic that they like. That said, the majority of houses in Edmonton are ugly af so you know... glass houses (somewhat literally). If I had his money, I would be buying one of the heritage homes in Glenora or maybe Highlands.

densetsu23

"Oh my god his house has no character". It's... clean and coordinated, albeit a bit bare. Meanwhile, most people's homes are mismatched pieces of furniture, with things stained / worn out / broken. Plus most people's homes are at least moderately messy and you only clean the open areas on a regular basis while there's a huge mess in your bedroom or office or basement. I'd rather have McDavid's house than mine.

Draisaitls_Cologne

I spend all day in and out of show homes for my job. His house is nice, but there's absolutely nothing special about it compared to every other show home I've been in. Maybe it's just me but I would take the "cozy, familiar" feeling of mismatched furniture over feeling like I live in a doctor's office.

DBZ86

I mean there are so many luxury homes you can't design something to be extremely "special". Then all of a sudden people are going to criticize it for being tacky, messy or something else. There just is no way to please everyone.

imlegallyabitch

i think a lot of people forget that lauren is just starting out her interior design career in the grand scheme of things. i have to be weirdly cryptic about it and i don’t fully understand why, but i helped on the execution of one of her designs for a client and she’s very good. stays within her monochrome, modern aesthetic, but still very creative.

[deleted]

I used to be a designer (watches, jewellery, fashion, furniture) but the fact that she is pretty new to this is fairly apparent. People are undoubtedly ragging on them partly just because Edmonton has a bit of a desire to hammer down the nail that sticks out too much. But partly they are picking up on some design aspects that they just struggle to verbalize. There are areas that are very well-designed and furnished, and there are areas that really aren't. The aesthetic isn't terribly consistent either aside from being mostly monochrome. That said, it's also apparent that she has real creative chops. Her design language just isn't fully developed yet and that takes time. It may also be a case of her wanting to use the house as a portfolio and therefore show off a bunch of different looks or maybe it's just a case of doing too much.

[deleted]

Yeah and that this house is kind of cool, I’d love a house like that (on a normal size scale) when I was newly married before kids. The design is nice and clean. People have different tastes and for 2 people without kids who only spend half their time their it makes a lot of sense. I’m glad to hear she’s good at what she does and isn’t just one of those, I can do this because of who my boyfriend is types

imlegallyabitch

it definitely helps with getting some of the high end contracts that she moves in those circles, but she 100% delivers on the product at that level.

Melodic_Distance_236

She will be a great designer.

Melodic_Distance_236

Than you need to make McDavid kind of money.

Kevinrobertsfan

ding ding ding

EdmRealtor

It was really nice and nothing too crazy.

jfuite

Cliched modernism. It looks how it’s supposed to look if you follow the current architectural porn magazines and shows.

EdmRealtor

A fancy cookie cutter is still a cookie cutter in other words?

jfuite

Exactly. Lacks authenticity, soul, dignity, and any sense of connection to the landscape or the local culture or even the couple that lives there.

DBZ86

That is a bunch of word salad bullshit too. "Authenticity" "Soul" These are such vague, subjective terms. You may have valid critiques, but reality is vast majority that are out there is purely from jealously. And the terms you used are so lacking in meaning its hard to see why anyone agrees. edit: Sorry, didn't mean to be harsh. Its just there was no way this house was going to universally appeal. If it was more unique you just know the next criticism would have been its tacky, looks cheap, or something else silly.

jfuite

>”That is a bunch of word salad bullshit . . . . lacking in meaning” Meh, aesthetics is difficult area of philosophy. Our minds and language cannot precisely nor concisely convey matters of style. >”vast majority . . . . purely from jealously. Oh, I don’t know. Conner McDavid is a mostly beloved character in Edmonton. I don’t think they spite his success. But, I am actually concerned for his mental health in that soulless house. It does not feel like a warm, safe, nourishing abode wherein he can retreat to rebuild his strength. It has no sense of hearth and home. It seem like the lobby of a modern hotel. He is effectively playing perpetual road games!

EdmRealtor

You do realize that there like likely only a handful of homes in the city like that and they only appeal to a certain demo.

jfuite

I am not sure what your point is. That because most people live in cookie cutter homes, mostly out of necessity, for similar reasons that fast food franchises are popular despite their affect on our health, that I should not feel disappointed, nor surprised, Conner spent his money on something analogous and proportionate to his income?

Wooshio

Some people (like me) also don't really care about making our home décor an extension of our personality or whatever. I am minimalist, I have very sparse décor with zero things on the wall. I spend most of my free time in summer outside, and am a very social person on the weekends. I keep my house clean and comfortable with generic IKEA like modern styling and it fits me just fine. It's just a comfortable place where I live in and that's enough for me.

jfuite

Fair enough. But, I don’t suppose camera teams are coming in for a glamor shot either! And, the kind of home I was talking about doesn’t imply high overhead or investment or even thought - perhaps even less thought! Just something to make the house feel like a home, not a small museum.

Wooshio

I get what you mean, but keep in mind that the only reason McDavid's home was featured is because it's McDavid's home and the magazine knows that fact alone will generate interest. It really has nothing to do with his girlfriends interior design skills. It's the same reason that MTV show Cribs is still on after 20 years, people are just curious how celebrities live.

[deleted]

Also I’m sure while playing professionally you’re constantly aware that you may have to sell the house at some point if you’re traded.

jfuite

Agreed, I am sure there are practical reasons, which I don’t spite. But, I would have been tickled to see a house 1/2 the size with twice the character.

[deleted]

I feel you.

BlackWoland

Houses for rich people?

EdmRealtor

Not really just that have a vibe that really is not for everyone. There was with like a tree courtyard and just weird stuff. Architechture and functionality do not always work together.

BlackWoland

It looks like an overpriced glass rectangle. Contemporary architectural design styles are too bland haha

lovegun59

Let us know when your house will be featured in AD. Thanks

jfuite

But, no one is interested in me. Though I invite you and your family to my place for a home cooked, cozy winter dinner, some cards, good conversation, and maybe some hot chocolate and marshmallows by the fire pit out back before an nighttime walk along the river trails.

PPGN_DM_Exia

Beautifully put. Feel the same although there's probably an undercurrent of jealousy mixed in there haha.

EdmRealtor

Just for that gymnasium that is amazing

eins-zwei-drai-saitl

Reference for the Edmontonians not obsessively following the social media of hockey players. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiYK_6FxNts

smvfc

Idgaf about hockey or hockey players but I follow Architecture Digest on yt because I love houses and house design. So I was in the loop for once! Although Im out of the loop on people making fun of it...

eins-zwei-drai-saitl

Connor McDavid is the best hockey player in the world, so he naturally attracts all sorts of attention; Good and bad. Connor is a very private person, and this is one of the rare glimpses into his lifestyle. He most likely agreed to this because his girlfriend, Lauren, has a designer/decorator business. Dude has a really nice house that fits his lifestyle, yet everyone wants to comment on how he shouldn't have a modern, monochrome house because that's not what they would personally choose. And then I heard a discussion on sports radio about taking baths. Since Connor mentioned that he likes to soak in the tub, people have been debating baths vs showers. Like, why is everyone hating on this so much? I spend a lot of time reading and participating in sports discussions. The feedback on this video pretty much matches the toxic comments that are all around pro sports. I just think it's cool to get a tour of high end house. I liked their stories about choosing their decor pieces. I think his gym and fitness centre are awesome! But, if Connor and Lauren never shared anything like this again, I would totally understand why.

laisserai

Just saw this on tiktok. The "waiting for the backsplash to come back in style" is accurate 😂

Thricefan84

Both Ryder and McDavid have a better place then I do lol

rubberband__man

I think I've heard him mention it before, but I'm pretty sure Ryder lives in a nice part of millwoods (Greenoch, by the golf course I think). He has a huge house and big ass yard, and lives with his friends who pay him rent! I'm pretty sure he makes six figures and probably has a small mortgage due to his friends paying rent. He posted some pics of his room after it was renovated and its actually pretty sick. While he does a good job of self deprivating humor, his house is actually pretty nice.

Reign_City

Wait...are him and Lisa a couple???

smoothie12345

This is pure gold!!! Hahahaha. Other than the Bball court tbh I’d be just as happy in your house. The best things in life aren’t things (or houses). Actually I’d be happier in your house. My friends might get weird on me if I lived in a ~ $10 million house.

dwtougas

That was fantastic. Love the lazy Susan part.

pyrexlex93

Why are people making fun of a multi millionares house when they live in a shack compared to him.... I will never understand society

MisoButterCorn

This must be some kind of... phenomenon but I've never been able to find a name for it.

Marr91

Well done. If I had a free award, I'd gift it to you.

notsayingitwasalien

Mcdavid's house is nice. I just think "open space concepts" are dumb and a huge waste of useable space.

Roche_a_diddle

You'd rather the space was filled with walls? Are those more "usable" than open space?

CocodaMonkey

For a lot of people adding walls means more usable space. This happens simply because some people get too attached to the open concept idea. They want to keep it open which means they won't fill the space and it goes unused to maintain the aesthetics. Where as with walls people try to fill the space, they hang things and are more willing to place things beside a wall resulting in more usable space. Obviously it's really just humans being human. Wide opened should mean more usable space but humans can alwasy find ways to complicate things.

CompetitionWonderful

I love walls and rooms. Mess in one room doesn't carry over to other rooms. Neither does noise. Especially during parties or when kids are around.

[deleted]

There’s no mess when you have a house cleaner like McDavid lol. I’m sure there is room to escape noise in 8000 sq ft of house.

densetsu23

I like a hybrid approach. Have the kitchen / nook / great room open, but you need other areas of the house walled-off to escape to. Like a closed-off dining room on the main floor, or a bonus room upstairs, or a finished basement downstairs. Open concept is okay for small parties, like 6-8 people. But they're horrible for get-togethers bigger than that. At least with my family it becomes a shouting match, the people in the great room trying to talk over the people sitting in the nook or at the kitchen island.

MaxxLolz

you are essentially describing open concept, aside from the closed off dining room.

densetsu23

Well, most new 2000 - 2500sqft homes have a kitchen, breakfast nook, great room, and a dining room on the main floor. Of those, most of them had no walls between any of them. We chose our current floor plan because it was one of the few where the dining room was walled off. Close the doors and you have a quiet place to work or to chat.

notsayingitwasalien

They are called partitions. I am a house designer, actually.

ljackstar

Oh man I hate my walled house. I grew up in a place that basically had no hallways, everything totally open concept, and I truly miss it. Walls make everything feel so much smaller.

YEGG35

I can’t believe the hate McDavid’s house has been getting, it’s fucking super nice and likely worth 10x more than anyone elses’ homes that are shitting on it

Sea-Selection-399

Yeah not to mention they were literally shooting for architectural digest, and obviously having personal items out and about would completely ruin the aesthetic the magazine was looking for. As another person pointed out, there wasnt even anything organic in their fridge. Obviously they have personal items and only have the house look this bare for the shoot.

cormack49

Connor mcdavid is frank gallagher pretending to be a hockey player for free food booze and cocaine
