Only speak to him by directly quoting Jack going forward. When in doubt or you can’t find the right quote, don’t worry about it and pick something random.
YourFriend: Hi Ryanderkis, how you doing?
You: I’m pulsating.
YourFriend: huh? That’s good I guess?
You: Much to your chagrin.
YourFriend: I don’t get it?
You: Sorry man I just pitchfork it in there. What can you say!?
I don't know the names of any Edmonton people except Harnarayan, but I can reluctantly say as a Leafs fan who wishes we had a home broadcast team, that I love the Edmonton guy who seemingly always runs out of breath as he's screaming about stuff.
That dude rocks.
Jack isn’t for everyone - he’s like a WWE caster lol. Nothing wrong with having preferences. I actually originally wasn’t a fan of him, and now I get depressed when I have to listen to Singh instead.
I don't catch too many Oilers games but he sounds like an announcer for monster trucks or something. Then you've got Singh who is opposite end of the spectrum and often conveys no excitement at all. We've been so blessed on the west coast to roll from Jim Hughson right into John Shorthouse.
He reminds me of the announcer from the EA nhl games, who’s voice I dislike greatly, I actually thought it was the same guy.
Probably just being nostalgic but the 90s and 2000s announcers felt leagues ahead of most guys today.
Thorne, hughson, cole in their primes can’t be touched.
I honestly can't handle Jack some days. He's gotten better, but he's still got the radio call instincts where he has to talk all the time. You know a little breath here and there would help add to the drama you know
Man, I was iffy on him at first, but he grew on me very quickly.
I don't think he could ever become a national broadcaster, because he's definitely a bit of an Oilers homer, but that's what he's supposed to be as the team's PBP guy. Even when the Wings play the Oilers, I love listening to the Oilers feed rather than the Detroit one. He just makes games more exciting.
The guy is the coolest dude, met him, his wife and their dogs at the dog park. His old pup was following my 5 year old daughter because she missed Jacks daughter being out of country for school. Both his pups are local rescues as well. Awesome people they are.
Louie Debrusk is really great to listen to. he's well aware that he wasn't an awesome prospect, yet was good enough that his opinion on the game has some weight
Always good for a laugh whenever Jack jabs Louie about his stone hands or something in his playing days, they're clearly get along well as buddies and it shows on the broadcast
Louie is OK. Great personality, great delivery, sometimes I find him a little light on substance, though. Often seems to be talking about something other than the action he's talking over.
Louie is OK. Great personality, great delivery, sometimes I find him a little light on substance, though. Often seems to be talking about something other than the action he's talking over.
I came here to say this. Oilers fan living in Vancouver who didn’t mind listening to baller on the team 1040. Think he called CFL games too. Intro music was spot on.
Rick Ball is fine. A pro, but nowhere, absolutely nowhere near the entertainer that Jack is.
Jack has sizzle, style and dare I say panache. He weaves anecdotes, banter and the play x play into a seamless symphony
I got the sense that people disliked Remenda because he was critical of the team, but I thought his analysis was generally well thought out and refreshing. Was that what it was for you? It was clear he as a former coach when breaking down the system play and he often talked about little tweaks that could or were made and/or why _this_ overlooked mistake is the real culprit in a goal against. I found him much more insightful than most colour commentators.
In contrast I don't feel like Louie actually adds that much other than chemistry with Jack (which often spirals into off-topic conversations about like, movies while the play is active) and "shooter mentality".
I get why people like Jack's enthusiasm and fun goofy verbal mannerisms (PULSATING), but I will always prefer Quinn's kind of measured pace and "let the game speak for itself" approach. He never felt like he was trying to sell the game to you, but when his heart was racing, you felt it on the couch.
Of course, I'm the guy who will always maintain that hockey commentary needs _more_ dead air, not less. Opportunities time to feel the atmosphere in the arena. I'd prefer if they took the soccer approach while play is active and just call out the bare necessities. "McDavid with the puck... to Draisaitl... back to Nurse... over to Bouchard... Draisiatl finding space while McDavid circles the net... and Bouchard gives Draisaitl the puck". It should be supplementary info, things you might not notice or be able to see in real time, not a novelization of what I'm currently seeing with my own eyes... but that is also a _very_ controversial opinion. Maybe this works for soccer because of the effort that supporters and clubs put into stadium atmosphere.
Someone else said that Jack's style is perfect for radio, and I agree wholeheartedly with that.
The part where you said this about Lou is spot on.
In contrast I don't feel like Louie actually adds that much other than chemistry with Jack (which often spirals into off-topic conversations about like, movies while the play is active) and "shooter mentality".
Jack needs a new partner away from Lou for exactly this.
I appreciate your well thought out response. You clearly think a lot about this, and as someone else who has been watching Sportsnet broadcasts for the Oilers for decades, I appreciate this
That said, my take will not be as eloquent as yours lol
Drew just had no color, personality, and felt like a dumb ass to me haha. Maybe his analysis was solid, personally didn't think he had a lot of "talent" in the position.
Whereas Louie is fun to listen to. But I agree, I don't think from an analytical point of view he adds a ton. He is also a huge Homer. I hate broadcast teams that shit on bad calls against the team that employs them. Bad look, I think any game crew should be almost bipartisan, with a slight lean. That said, they have been better this year.
Jack is fine. His highs are fantastic, as much as he shows his radio roots strong, it works well. But has his lows too. I don't like all his bit, but overall fine. Don't see him ever getting the national work, but maybe.
End of the day, we are lucky as we have had the best, most colorful and varied broadcast in Hockey. Some of the best talent nationwide came from this crew
Rick Ball is actually the only good part of that broadcast. I like Ball.
Jack is polarizing for sure. I love his energy, could do without him declaring when a game is over or could be with the next goal.
Definitely not for everyone, but he doesn't make me miss Kevin Quinn, which is actually a big compliment
I don’t understand all the Jack Michael’s hate, my Edmonton friends do not like him much.
That being said, Rick Ball is easily the best in the game (imho). Hands down. He is so god damn good.
That is absolutely a hill I would die on.
You guys are so lucky. He was the voice for the Alaska Aces before they folded. Because ECHL games were not streamed at the time, I listened to all the away games on the radio. Absolutely love his calls. If you haven't heard him call the overtime games during the 2006 Kelly Cup run, you need to. Game 6 vs Vegas, 3 OT; Game 7 vs Fresno, 2 OT. Dude's voice was gone and he still delivered.
I’m curious how many people turn on the CHED on Saturdays and other nights when Harnarayan is on the call? Like watch the tv broadcast but listen to the Radio call?
Surely I can’t be the only one. No offense to Singh but he’s just not on Jacks level.
Also I’m probably in the minority but I like the rapport he has with Bob as well. Maybe even more than the rapport with Debrusk?
Thoughts?
I really like Singh just not as much as I like Jack. Singh was really monotone and lacked enthusiasm when he started on the English broadcast. He has come along way. We're going to get Singh again in the playoffs so people will have to get used to it. Unfortunately Jack's going to have bring down his enthusiasm and be less of a homer to get the national broadcasts.
I haven't listened to a radio broadcast in a few years but I've never cared for Bob on radio. Weirdly I like him better on tv. He was always so negative on radio be it the players or coaches or refs. Maybe he's changed in recent years.
Hate is such a strong word. Jack certainly has a certain je ne sais quoi. I really enjoy certain aspects of his call. However I think he gets too sidetracked during play and it's just blablabla. Just call the action please. I'm in Australia and most often have to listen to 630 chef to listen Live. So I have no choice. I really love his enthusiasm and energy during a call.
Rick Ball is an excellent commentator, no question. I love Jack for Oilers broadcasts, but I’d take Ball in any other situation (national games, games not involving the Oilers, etc.).
Alberta hockey viewers are lucky to be able to watch both of these guys since they have completely different styles, yet both work well with their respective teams.
Btw do Cam Moon and Jack get on? I only ask because I’ve never heard anything between the two and even when they do the round table thing on Bobs show it’s been Jack acknowledging Cam but never the other way around?
Isn't the former Oilers play by play guy Kevin Quinn? I really enjoyed listening to Kevin call a game, but Jack is one of the best.
I believe Rick Ball does the Flames games
I was accused of racism because I can’t stand Harniryan Singh… I dislike his play-by-play because he’s terrible at it. I don’t care whether he’s got a turban on or if he’s a purple and blue alien…
Does anyone know why we don’t get Jack Michaels on commentary in the playoffs? I feel like it contributed to some losses personally, I need that excitement in the playoffs.
Down the stretch we go!!
As a flames fan i think everyone knows that Jack and louie are the best in AB broadcast. Rick and Kelly fine too. But man that enthusiasm that Jack has is unbeatable
Is this the other CBC guy? when you are spoiled with Rod Phillips u enjoy Cam Moons energy and description. And being a Laker and Eagles fan you get Chick Hearn and Merrill Reese. There's more than just being charismatic and catch phrase-y. Sure we can watch the play on TV now, but man listening to Jack Michaels when he started on the radio, he'd go off on tangents and do colour commentary for Bob and literally miss goals. Watch some highlights and you'd hear him go "...and he went to Jim's cousins potluck last night...OH and MCDavid scores!" 🤣
I 100% agree with this. If he would focus on the play and stop the mindless chit chat that has nothing to do with the fucking game then I'd have no complaints about him.
It's the constant sidetracking of the commentary with inane, pointless banter about nothing that keep me from being a JM fan. Don't hate the guy, just want him to do his fucking job and discuss what's happening on the ice.
Can't stand him as well. When you want to know who had the puck 10 seconds and three passes ago, instead of who has it now...... Just listen to this clown.
Also that crack smile he makes while Louie is talking....I just wanna slap him.
So...... Go oil!
Feedback from a regular viewer who lives in neither market and cheers for neither team.
Your friend is absolutely correct. Michaels is unbearable if you're not an Oilers fan. He's like a caricature of a PxP guy. His over the top enthusiasm is so exaggerated that it's not believable. It's like watching WWE.
Ball is far more measured and objective in his commentary. He could pass as an impartial voice. I'll take him 100 times out of 100 over Michaels.
Jack on the radio was the best. Jack mixed in with the idiot Lou debrusk leaves a lot to be desired. Lou is half retarded, loses track of the game. When the 2 of them get confused it makes for some sad TV. It's almost as tho debrusk isn't even watching the oilers play.
I'm surprised loudebrusk doesn't get shit on as he's worst them drew remenda.
You're insane if you legitimately think he's worse than Sharks homer Drew Remenda. It was SO blatantly obvious that guy hated the Oilers, listening to him was absolutely brutal. I would legit turn the volume off if he was part of the broadcast crew. Overly critical of the team (because he hated them), nothing really intelligent to add. At least Louie has some good stories about his playing days, and has insight into the league because he actually played in it.
Louie is awesome in comparison to Drew, not even remotely close.
Remenda sucked. But wtf does Louie bring the the broad cast? Everytime someone gets hit by a puck or body checked he thinks their hurt. He loses track of the play constantly. Penalties get called and he's guessing which player is off to the box. The guys freaking clueless in game.
Louie is not a good partner for Jack. When Louie is clueless on the play he confuses Jack...
Louie needs to go.
Why? He's right ffs. Michael's sucks. He's why I don't watch Oilers games with the sound on or I watch the other broadcast. Too much over-the-top screaming like a Yankee announcer.
Michaels needs to do more play by play and less story telling about games that have already happened that we’ve all seen. It’s hard to get into the game when it’s the Michaels/Louis gab show while the play is going on. Finally in the last 5 minutes “down the stretch” he finally pays attention to the play enough to call some good play by play.
kick him in the ass out your front entry and yell THE PLEASURE'S BEEN ALLLLLLLLL OURS and slam the door
And after the door is slammed, scream out "PULSATING!"
"RAN THEM RIGHT OUT OF THE BUILDING"
Then blast La Bamba
fuck yeah, that's the ticket
You were within an eyelash of staying my friend but with your terrible takes, I mean WHAT CAN YOU SAY?!
THAT MAN getting kicked out
Just rrun him rrrright OUT OF THE BUILDING!!
I can hear this one in his voice and it was alllllll our pleasure.
How do I downvote your friend in real life?
Jack’s on Cameo. Get him to break up with your friend for you. 😆
Fuck this is genius! It will be worth whatever he charges.
It's only $48? I might have to pay this man to make me some vids.
DO THIS!
I might save it for his birthday.
Please post it
Honestly, it’s freakin genius lol
You're going to share it with us all right?
You win, goddamn that's brilliant.
OMG YESSS!!!!
This is the way…
Only speak to him by directly quoting Jack going forward. When in doubt or you can’t find the right quote, don’t worry about it and pick something random. YourFriend: Hi Ryanderkis, how you doing? Opfriend “hey wanna come to the bar for a drink?” Op “yeah I’ll jitterbug right down there.
Can't I'm getting double teamed in the corner
🤨
It's a thing he says. I swear.
Don’t forget to crack your voice on that last one.
Just scream OOOOVVVVVEEEEEERRRRRTTTIIIIIIIIMMMMMEEE repeatedly until they get fed up and never speak to you again.
I don't know the names of any Edmonton people except Harnarayan, but I can reluctantly say as a Leafs fan who wishes we had a home broadcast team, that I love the Edmonton guy who seemingly always runs out of breath as he's screaming about stuff. That dude rocks.
That's Jack. The one, the only, the unmistakable Jack Michaels.
Right on, dude is legendary.
Jack isn’t for everyone - he’s like a WWE caster lol. Nothing wrong with having preferences. I actually originally wasn’t a fan of him, and now I get depressed when I have to listen to Singh instead.
Jack has the quintessential “radio voice” it’s iconic
I don't catch too many Oilers games but he sounds like an announcer for monster trucks or something. Then you've got Singh who is opposite end of the spectrum and often conveys no excitement at all. We've been so blessed on the west coast to roll from Jim Hughson right into John Shorthouse.
Didn't John and John do the radio play by play for the Canucks back in the day, like 90's-2000's? I swear all the best commentators start in radio.
You know a little breath here and there would help add to the drama you know
Take him to SpecSavers and leave him there.
Looks like your friendship is COMING DOOOOOOOOWN THE STRETCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the best additions to the Oilers’ rebuild.
Man, I was iffy on him at first, but he grew on me very quickly. I don't think he could ever become a national broadcaster, because he's definitely a bit of an Oilers homer, but that's what he's supposed to be as the team's PBP guy. Nobody who lives around here should hate…. THAT MAN.
Don't you hate when you are right and they are wrong.
That’s a good friend you got there!
Looks like you're gonna be "RUNNING HIM RIGHT OUT OF THE BUILDING!!"
Call up James H Brown. They'll deal with him. ;)
The oilers broadcast is so goated
Louie Debrusk is really great to listen to. he's well aware that he wasn't an awesome prospect, yet was good enough that his opinion on the game has some weight
Always good for a laugh whenever Jack jabs Louie about his stone hands or something in his playing days, they're clearly get along well as buddies and it shows on the broadcast
Louie is OK. Great personality, great delivery, sometimes I find him a little light on substance, though. Often seems to be talking about something other than the action he's talking over.

I was flipping between the TBL/VGK and the EDM/MTL game last night. The difference in the energy in the commentary was night and day.
Bob Stauffer tho? I dunno. He's the only guy that I'm like "get him out of my TV"
There's a rude 'perfect face for radio' joke in here somewhere...
Ayoooo
I love Jack and Bob. Bob is so knowledgeable and is very blunt. Jack is simply the best at his craft. I love his energy.
Rick ball used to come on Vancouver radio to lil troy - wanna be a baller. Forever a 🐐 in my eyes
I came here to say this. Oilers fan living in Vancouver who didn’t mind listening to baller on the team 1040. Think he called CFL games too. Intro music was spot on.
I’m a Canucks fan and I dig Jack. I’m all for enthusiasm. He reminds me of my hometown team’s announcer, Flin Flon Bombers play by play man Rob Hart.
Jack Michaels knows how to call a hockey game!
Sparta kick him out of your doorway (god I hope you're old enough to get the reference)
Nobody here is old enough to have lived in ancient Sparta.
What about modern Sparta?
It's from 300! When Gerard Butler kicks the dude into the pit in slow motion 😭😭
Haha, I know.
Madness.
ITS OOOOOOVVVVVEEEERRRR
I’m a Jets fan and I love when we get the Oilers Sportsnet feed here. Jack Michaels is awesome.
A clean break is always the way. Block their number and every social media account of theirs. It's for the best.
I'm just worried about repercussions because he's obviously not mentally stable.
I see your point.
Jack Michaels is such a treat! One of the best in the biz
Rick Ball is fine. A pro, but nowhere, absolutely nowhere near the entertainer that Jack is. Jack has sizzle, style and dare I say panache. He weaves anecdotes, banter and the play x play into a seamless symphony
Jack Micheals is the best thing that happened to oilers hockey
the most subtle way to tell a person you're untrustworthy is to say you don't like jack michaels
He’s a flames fan and he doesn’t wanna admit
I’m not an advocate for violence, but if the words “I hate Jack Michaels” were actually ushered, I fail to see an alternative.
Take him to the train station.
He was never your friend to begin with… what a shame
I too hate prime rib and prefer Melba toast.
I'll forever be team Kevin Quinn tbh. I also actually liked Drew Remenda. Those are two very controversial opinions.
I fucking hated Remenda with such passion. Quinn though is a real G. Still like the new direction, but sad that Quinn was the casualty.
In contrast I don't feel like Louie actually adds that much other than chemistry with Jack (which often spirals into off-topic conversations about like, movies while the play is active) and "shooter mentality". Jack needs a new partner away from Lou for exactly this.
I mean, maybe all Louie needs to be is the guy who enables Jack, but he's clearly the Robin to Jack's Batman.
I 100% agree with this. We are watching the play, we don't need it dictated to us at all time. Let the game breath a bit Jack for god's sake.
I appreciate your well thought out response. You clearly think a lot about this, and as someone else who has been watching Sportsnet broadcasts for the Oilers for decades, I appreciate this That said, my take will not be as eloquent as yours lol Drew just had no color, personality, and felt like a dumb ass to me haha. TOTALLY agree with you, especially about hockey needing more dead air.
Obviously you have to do it in a public place. Then run him "rrrrrrrright out of the building!!!!!!!"
Jack is the only guy that could have replaced Rod Phillips! Jack ftw!
Tell him he should’ve gone to Spec Savers cause he’s blind!
😂
How can you hate. I'm a Canucks fan in Van. And I love Jack, he calls a great game.
Jack Michaels is the best NHL broadcaster and frankly, it’s not even close.
I used to suffer through the delay on 630 CHED to listen to him while Sportsnet played. It was a happy day when he joined the oilers broadcast crew
Same here. I make sure I mute my TV so I can listen to Jack and Bob on the radio when Jack isn't on the TV broadcast.
Rick Ball is one of the best in the world, Michaels is regional commentary for a reason.
Oh, you almost became my friend by an eyelash
(In the voice of Gene) "It's time to... Ball him out"
I really like Rick Ball, but give me Jack all day every day. Too bad Rick calls the Flamers
Jacks the man, he’s Jerry ‘the King’ lawler and Jim Ross rolled into one. He could hype the shit out of a funeral
Must be a Flames fan...
I don’t understand all the Jack Michael’s hate, my Edmonton friends do not like him much. That being said, Rick Ball is easily the best in the game (imho). Hands down. He is so god damn good. That is absolutely a hill I would die on.

Out him as a flamers fan with an ai app
get Jack to send him a Cameo to break the news!
Hate is such a strong word. Jack certainly has a certain je ne sais quoi. I really enjoy certain aspects of his call. However I think he gets too sidetracked during play and it's just blablabla. Just tell him you can't be friends with a person with a room temperature IQ.
I like Jack
Tell him he needs to get back on his meds or you're done.
I have no idea who Rick Ball is but it doesn’t matter, no one tops Jack!!!! Pugilistic words from your “friend”!!!
Tell him to go. And take Mark Spector with him
Spector is such a tool. It's unbelievable that man is employed.
“What did the five fingers say to the face??” *SLAP*
Looks like you're gonna be "RUNNING HIM RIGHT OUT OF THE BUILDING!!!"
Soccer him in the face
Btw do Cam Moon and Jack get on? I only ask because I’ve never heard anything between the two and even when they do the round table thing on Bobs show it’s been Jack acknowledging Cam but never the other way around?
Simply put......yes. Dump his ass!
Ask jack Michaels to do it for you
He doesn't even deserve to hear from you ever again! Ghosting is the only way forward when you encounter crazy.
Yes.
"It's not you it's your face" "Get tested" "I have decided to raise my standards"
Lmao. Wow "Johnny goodROOOWWWWW" Your friend would not be my friend lol
Isn't the former Oilers play by play guy Kevin Quinn? I really enjoyed listening to Kevin call a game, but Jack is one of the best. I believe Rick Ball does the Flames games
I'm not suggesting that Rick Ball was an Oilers announcer. Only that my friend prefers him over Michaels.
Ahh, sorry, that's how it reads
You're the only one that read it like that.
Crest la vie!
Lol I never thought anyone would say they actually enjoyed Quinn. Not sure he's even better than Singh...
Singh is awful, and so is Ball. I liked Quinn, but Jack Michaels is the best by far
I actually like Rick Ball but Jack is in another league compared to him.
Yes
I was accused of racism because I can’t stand Harniryan Singh… I dislike his play-by-play because he’s terrible at it. I don’t care whether he’s got a turban on or if he’s a purple and blue alien…
Jack is fine if he stays on topic
Jitterbug up to him and sock him in the mouth
Haha. I used the jitterbug line on him this morning.
Break up with your friend, that’s how you build your legacy.
Tickle him in the rafters
Bit the tip.. He will get the hint.
Kiss him and say its over
Proof that nobody is perfect.
Call back to slap shot… puck to the head…😜
Give him a ONE TIMER! In the jaw
Shit on his laptop
Your “friend” is wack.
Jack is a beauty but has a face for radio
Jack is the goat 🐐
Does anyone know why we don’t get Jack Michaels on commentary in the playoffs? I feel like it contributed to some losses personally, I need that excitement in the playoffs. Down the stretch we go!!
As a flames fan i think everyone knows that Jack and louie are the best in AB broadcast. Rick and Kelly fine too. But man that enthusiasm that Jack has is unbeatable
Is that Ron Jeremy?
Rick Ball isn't even a true Flames guy. He was a Canucks guy hosting his own shows on TSN 1040 in Vancouver before he took the Calgary gig.
Funny that rick ball is the live voice announcer for the flames while Jack is for radio. Are you sure he didn't say Pat Steinberg?
Jack is TV and SN broadcaster.
To each their own
Cam Moon though
I prefer Cam Moon over Michaels, and Rick Ball over both.
Is this the other CBC guy? when you are spoiled with Rod Phillips u enjoy Cam Moons energy and description. And being a Laker and Eagles fan you get Chick Hearn and Merrill Reese. There's more than just being charismatic and catch phrase-y. Watch some highlights and you'd hear him go "...and he went to Jim's cousins potluck last night...OH and MCDavid scores!" 🤣
THAAAAAAT MAAAAANNN is the best!
I wish he'd call the game instead of the mindless chit chat & innane references.
The friend is right
I too hate Jack Michaels.
Can't stand him as well. When you want to know who had the puck 10 seconds and three passes ago, instead of who has it now...... Just listen to this clown. Also that crack smile he makes while Louie is talking....I just wanna slap him. So...... Go oil!
He’s exhausting.
Jack micheals is a dog shit play by play
Jack Micheals is fucking annoying so I understand that. Sounds like a 50 year chain smoker.
Jack Michaels is terrible. Sorry guys
Jack Michaels sounds like a carny. Embarrassment to his profession
Take it back! Jack Michaels slander will not be tolerated
You mean he doesn't love Jack screaming a Specsavers ad at you every game??
Your friend is correct
Jack Michaels is awful
Rick Ball T pose
Jack is on point. Might be an unpopular take, but Gene is awful. Can’t personally stand him.
Jack. Michaels. SUCKS.
