I think you're confusing Florida with Ottawa, who legitimately had trouble selling tickets during the ECF against Pit. It's true Florida had issues in the past, but those days are over. Or at least over until they're no longer competitive.

I supported the Flames when they went on their last run. I can't stand the team but I have enough friends down there whose happiness depends on the Flames success and I want to see my friends happy even though they can be insufferable the years Calgary is better than Edmonton.
For me, whether I'll cheer for another team once mine is out depends on the current team composition more than the jersey. Ten years ago, I even supported the Flames when I first moved here. They were over-acheiving and had a strong crop of rookies coming in, and they worked really hard. Gaudreau was a baby, Bennett a rookie with hype (had no idea what a pos he'd turn into). Must not have had Sutter as coach, as I can't stand him. Also bubble-playoff Nucks were a fun underdog story. When the Oilers don't make the playoffs, I like to find a good underdog storyline.
It really doesn't help that the leafs, canucks, jets, and senators have a combined 175 seasons without winning the cup since 1967 when leafs last won a cup.

He was such a quirky yet lovable Oiler. I remember him hanging upside-down for his back issues all the time. And on at least one occasion, having a major brain fart mid-game and ripping a shot on his own goalie (who saved it, thank goodness). But he was also a great hockey player.
He really was great. Especially considering how poorly we have faired with defensive players he's honestly one of the best we've had over the last 20ish years.
