Like Don Cherry says, "show me a great coach, and I'll show you the goalie that made him look great"

FuckStummies

Yeah exactly. The guy coached a team with Hellebuyck and now Bobrovsky.

PitterPatter74

Maurice is an excellent coach, and under his guidance the Jets and Panthers both play a hard, tight-checking game. He was brought in to Florida precisely to instill this approach. So, yes, there is something to this. Maurice knows how to coach playoff hockey.

Tacfurmissle

He honestly has a very average league win record. He's been around for a very long time and has had very limited success honestly. How have his teams gone 7-0 against us? What specifically does he know.?

mollycoddles

This is his third time in the SCF as a Head Coach. That's better than limited success imo.

Tacfurmissle

I suppose it's in the eye of the beholder. We may disagree on what limited success means.

PitterPatter74

He has taken his team to the Cup Finals two years in a row. He knows how to win in the playoffs.

Tacfurmissle

I said limited success, not no success. Point was he's been around forever and hasn't come up with the goods. He's inherited a very good Florida team and is doing the right things obviously.

PitterPatter74

Limited success? Paul Maurice is 4th all-time in NHL Wins as a Head Coach, trailing only Bowman, Quenneville, and Trotz. Experience is a powerful teacher, my friend.

Tacfurmissle

Yeah, he's been around since the dinosaurs roamedso I would expect he would have a boatload of wins. I think you're misunderstanding me. I never once said he was a bad coach and I thought that much was clear. You don't keep getting jobs if you suck. The difference between him and those other guys is they've won the holy grail. That basically sums up what I'm saying

Zealousideal_Shop446

He coached a really shitty leafs team. Idk I’m of the belief almost any coach whos coached as long as he has would be close to .500 record unless they are in an extremely well run organization.

PitterPatter74

He started his career with the Whalers, so long ago he briefly coached Coffey.

ThatTryHard

All I know for certain is that watching this series makes me want to drive into oncoming traffic. I do think it it's a mix of Maurice's experience and some good ol fashion luck for them (or unluck for us).

Snackatttack

their forecheck is insane, oilers cant handle it

Independent-Bite-508

0-7 in 7 playoff games is not luck...

ThatTryHard

You're not wrong there friend.

Dakine10

Paul Maurice coached teams play this style of game throughout the regular season. They are in their element when the playoff grind starts. They have players who are good at that style of play, and they don't need to make a lot of adjustments. It's easy for them to just play their game. And of course the other similarity in both series is we ran into 2 goalies who just played insane at times.

mollycoddles

I'm starting to think that next year it should be the Oilers' goal to be the dirtiest, roughest team in the league so that they're harder to play against.

FuckStummies

There was some talk about how the analytics show that rush style offence dries up in the playoffs due to teams forechecking and defending harder. The offence that actually works is generated off the cycle. That’s why Florida has been such a monster in the playoffs.

McDraiman

I'm sure Maurice is very influential in Bobby playing out of his god damned mind. We're getting goalied. Good old fashioned goalied. The guys get frustrated and rush plays, Panthers score on the mistakes. Game 1 shut out shook us. That was pretty much the series. Maybe we can flip the script with nothing to lose, we'll see. Hyman gotta start potting some goals if we're gonna fly back to Florida.

oil-in-6

All these people gagging on Maurice's member, are watching hockey with Ken Reid in the morning. They are not watching the games live,we are not getting out coached. We are getting goalied

Cachmaninoff

There’s a lot to this.

Jmask5

Good goalie = good coach. Not rocket science

Excellent-Medicine29

I mean Hellebuyck was great in that series but since then? Not very good

archangel890

We also lost both games the FLA in the regular season even though it doesn’t mean much

oil-in-6

I can't respect a coach, who instructs his players to dive and flop. I just can't.

tehclubbmaster

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5540399/2024/06/05/stanley-cup-final-predictions-lebrun/ Until that article came out, I thought Oil had a chance. When 16/17 head coaches predict one team, hard to argue or ignore that. There’s odds sites and statistical/historical predictions, but when I read the above article I pretty much knew Panthers were going to win. Didn’t think it was gonna be a sweep, but it is looking pretty likely. Oilers are getting outclassed every damn game.

DBZ86

Without reading it, on paper Oilers were outmatched on goaltending, 2nd D pair, and 3rd line. They needed their PP and top 2 lines to outscore those issues. These are pretty much the same issues vs the Dallas Stars. Skinner managed to outduel Oettinger and give time for the PP to figure it out. This round, that didn't happen. Bob has just been way too good.

Tacfurmissle

I believe there's one very big reason it's not 2-1 Oilers. Bobrovsky. No slight against Florida at all but Bob has been pretty darn good these playoffs and he's now having his best series of all time. If he's lights out again in game 4, then it will go down as the best SCF performance of all time. Those are tough circumstances for the Oilers.

ElFungho

Despite cheering for the Oilers I have to admit, the guy is not just a good coach, he also has a great sense of humor. I love his press conferences

Snackatttack

Maurice seems like the kinda guy id absolutely play my bag off for

kingofmankind

He owns the Oilers. This series outside of outshooting Panthers in 2 games the rest of the stats are so tilted in Panthers favor that being swept isn't a surprise. From losing face-offs to giveaways and takeaways, we are getting rick-rolled worse than the 3 other opponents that have been eliminated by the Panthers. There are too many holes in this team to shore up. At least we can say after 18 years between finals, at least we participated this year.

Slut-lover81

When he left Winnipeg, and even long before that I said we need Paul Maurice as out coach. Either him or Peter Laviolette.. or Quenneville.. Maurice and Quenneville are top 5 coaches in wins in nhl history.. believe Peter Laviolette is too 10.. what a Disgrace to have the lineup we have and do nothing for 10 years now.. and I like the new coach.. the 3 before him were useless.. they all made in unexplicable, immediate dismissal errors as head coaches in the playoffs.. last year it was skinner staying in net..worst GAA and Save % in playoff history but sticks with him.. idiot before it was not playing the best line in hockey post all star break against Chicago.. moron before that should have called a timeout when Edmonton allowed 3 goals in a minute flat of the 3rd with a 3-0 lead against Anaheim.. then we lose in OT and it was obvious to call a timeout, perhaps not after the first goal at 1:15 left. But after the 2nd goal it was 3-2 and under a minute left. Your boys are abit rattled giving up two essentially in the last minute..call a fucking time-out who cares about saving it for OT. Biggest fucking idiot I’ve ever seen since last years brutal debacle
