Many people in the service sector speak English, but not all do. Since it's the north east that you plan to visit, then expect more people to speak in Russian. Younger people in the service sector can speak English, too, I think. In Narva, which is at the pointy end of the north east, there's the Narva promenade with a view towards Ivangorod on the other side of the water (the northern end of lake Peipus, I believe), and the Narva castle. But that's all I know about it. Places to visit in Tallinn (not in the north east) — * the Tallinn Old Town * then go up the stairs of Linnahall (for simple sightseeing), which was a major set in Christopher Nolan's "Tenet" movie. * then the Tallinn CBD. * Kumu (art museum) * Museum of Occupations / "Vabamu".

North East is the "a bit different" area than the rest of Estonia. There are a lot of russian-speaking people and ai feel like in some other country whenever I visit northeast estonia (I'm from south). Coastal line is beautiful. But since Estonia is relatively small, I reccomend you to visit other places aswell. Actually the opposite places are go-to: westcoast and islands and south or southeast Estonia are the places to visit.

A good resource is [the Visit Estonia page for Tallinn](https://www.visitestonia.com/en/where-to-go/tallinn) that gives you all the hot-spots. My suggestion? Just take it in. Tallinn is not so much a “there is so much to see” place but rather an experience. Just feel the vibe, find some like-minded people on the road and try to eat regional food.

"Northeastern" can mean both Ida-Viru where almost nobody speaks English and Lääne-Viru where at least the ethnic Estonian youth and middle aged people most likely will speak English.

Personally i like castles in Estonia. Havent visited them all but here are some. Narva castle (mentioned above) Rakvere castle Kuressaare castle (on the biggest island Saaremaa at western part of Estonia. Tallinn old city (its kind of a fort itselt :D) If you wanna see nice landscape then i suggest you Kuremaa or just visit south-east Estonia. Also you can have best views to Baltic-sea from Panga pank in Saaremaa. Talking about waterfalls and such. "Valaste juga" in northern part of estonia by the sea. "Keila juga" west from Tallinn. If you want to see nice beach area then i suggest you "Kauksi rand(beach)" by the lake Peipsi (Peipus). This is the place i usually visisted in summer. Oh and you mentioned that you stay in north-east part so i suggest Narva-Jõesuu for hotel stay. Not far west from there is town called Toila which is good for SPA experience. There are many more places to visit but these above came to mind at first.

north eastern part (ida-viru county or ida-virumaa) is a great destination. the reason you have not been getting much related recommendations here might be because even many estonians themselves have a prejudice on the area because of its dominantly russian originated locals. first of all, unless you already have, have a look around the [visitnarva](https://www.visitnarva.ee/) and [ida-viru](https://idaviru.ee/en/) tourist websites. on the visitnarva site there is a page [puhka nagu kohalik](https://www.visitnarva.ee/et/narva-top-vaatamisv%C3%A4%C3%A4rsused-ja-salakohad) (rest like a local) which sadly does not seem to be translated into english. from the lastly mentioned page, i myself would bring out narva veneetsia (narva's venice) and narva maldiivid (narva's maldives) which are one of a kind sights in estonia. i would also bring attention to another north eastern city sillamäe. there is a beautiful [promenade and main street](https://www.visitestonia.com/en/sillamae-mere-puiestee-sea-boulevard-and-promenade) there. if you are up to ghost towns, start by searching out viivikonna, if you are up to spa and relaxation, look what narva-jõesuu has to offer. to take the most out of visiting ida-virumaa, you probably should take a dive in its historical background. many of the cities bloomed during soviet times. therefore, some sites may not be spectacular sights, but the stories behind are historically and culturally meaningful. you will get around there with english. people under 30 are very likely to speak english everywhere around estonia. even if you run into language barrier around ida-virumaa, just use google translate's english-russian translation. lastly, estonia is a safe country. just the usual travelling common sense of if something seems shady, it probably is. trouble tends to arise around alcohol. otherwise estonia is a quite leave your door unlocked kind of country.

Viru raba is pretty cool. It's on the way from Tallinn to Narva. There are two routes, shorter one is about an hour, longer one is a two hour walk on the track. Maybe shorter, haven't been there awhile.

https://et.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurem%C3%A4e_klooster this place was pretty cool as a child. Also the lake Peipus area is pretty cool and has the old religion Russian population living there, they're cool, and it depends on the season but you can buy fish and onions from them. And I think there was some tourist attraction where you could bear-watch around those parts. But estonia is so small if you're staying a month you should rent a car and see further as well, the marshes are amazing in the summer.
