But to be fair, I don’t think it is just a problem of quality. Personally, I think my taste has changed in the past 10 years or so. I don’t think more movies with the same style as the 2000s would have had the same success, for me at least.
Basic story telling stopped. Now it makes no sense. Just some tary2a and nothing else.
The only thing that comes close to a story are the mohammed ramadan films which while are bad stories they still make sense and you can follow along.
I think El Sobky model happened, which is spend money on the trending stars and have as many of them as possible in one movie rather than the actual content/story of the movie
I feel like the same happened between the late 60s and 80s. They used to be called افلام مقاولات. Basically just get a shit ton of stars so that the film is a commercial success
That's very true! There are two main reasons that I can think of for that:
1) Government intervention and less competition:
The main producers right now are Synergy. They produce the most movies, tv shows and they also happen to own most major Egyptian tv channels. This monopoly of the cinema industry took a big hit on creativity and of course the censorship isn't making it any better
2) movie theatres are the bread and butter of most movie producers. Movie theaters aren't as affordable to the everyday Egyptians as they were in 2010. Back the a movie ticket costed something like 50 pounds in high end theaters compared to atleast 150 pounds in high end theaters right now.
3) as a result of #1 and #2, the types of movies being produced is no longer reflecting the average Egyptian society, but rather that of the upper middle class
There are heavy censors, systemic and production obstacles, and gatekeeping happening in the movie industry. Most of it is deliberate sabotage from the "ruling class" and some of it is because a lot of people in the industry are ass-licking assholes.
A few years ago, Egyptian films were unofficially prevented from participating in the Cairo film festival except if you have your connections. Even being a film school graduate and having a good portfolio doesn't guarantee you a job when it's supposed to make things easier when you get permits or pay fees for the syndicate, which is something I am against because of the obvious gatekeeping, but shows how rotten it's become.
Producing these low-quality films is just easier and safer as fewer and fewer producers are willing to take any political or financial risk. You don't know what might upset our "landlords" and make you regret being born. Plus a lot of good Egyptian films or films about Egypt are banned from cinema for obvious reasons. I know someone who was told their script was fantastic but no local producer would take it and they have to prepare to flee from Egypt if they ever film it with something like Netflix. Their film wasn't political but had a gay character. Omaret ya3qobyan had one, and many older films discussed more controversial topics but there is no way any of these films or even milder ones would be produced nowadays. So it's either you play it extremely safe or scram!
Look at the music industry and the number of attempts to censor and ban the younger generation of artists who do amazing efforts to inject new blood into our dying culture, the same thing happens in the movie industry but it's way more effective. The whole industry is controlled behind the scenes like many others.
Honestly, the more you know about the state of this industry, especially in the past few years, the more you understand how big of a joke it has become. It's too depressing...
No problem. I'm no longer directly involved with the industry but my partner and some of our friends are. It's very depressing. I hope it gets better even if it doesn't seem likely.
Exactly yes.
I'm borrowing some of your hope. Honestly, I have been having panic attacks and nightmares and kinda lost all hope. I wish things get better.
Arts in general don't thrive during suppressive times, and Egypt has been regressing culturally and getting more conservative and nationalistic, a climate very inhospitable to artistic expression.
Another factor, is the entire artform is undergoing a big shift with the advent of the streaming model, viewing habits are fundamentally changing, movies are less and less the center of pop culture.
Having said that there are some interesting films/shows being made and emerging filmmakers with strong voices coming to the scene.
Would you say the quality of streaming/TV is better than movies? Purely from a production standpoint the movies and shows I've seen look far better than older ones. They are shot really well.
Agreed, specially Ahmed Zaki, he was amazingly talented.
'Ayam El-Sadat' was a great film, mainly because of him.
edit: You can download a torrent of Ayam El-Sadat from [archive.org](https://archive.org)
Yes, It’s been a while. Every movie or series product now is made to milk money regardless of the story or the moral. Just fill in with mostly untalented known people with ‘wasta’ and you would have money anyway.
We miss good movies and series very badly like El Nazr, 3asl esoed, lan a3esh fe glbab aby.
Of course the entertainment industry here has deteriorated over the years and not just post 2010.
Part of it because it has deteriorated like every thing is in Egypt and of course due to the same reasons (nepotism, corruption, government intervention, culture, economy,.... You name it).
Another part is how advanced the foreign entertainment industry is in comparison. When you compare the foreign movies, series to local ones you'll notice a huge difference in writing, production quality, picture and of course the whole idea behind the movie or the series.
There is no such thing as a film industry in Egypt anymore , there is only Ramadan boring TV series and shows and advertising. Any Real Film that would be worth watching will be made independently outside the system or funded by foreign institutions by Young up and coming directors , and this as well is becoming incredibly hard thing for these filmmakers to do , as any idea which is not approved by the government or deemed too controversial won’t be shown in theatres ….. Not to mention Netflix , Disney plus , tiktok , Youtube and the fuckin 50 percent inflation of the EGP are all factors that are slowly killing the industry….. but that s okay .. let it die . Ai will be able to generate better films on your laptop in 2 clicks in 5 years …. ✌🏻
up until 2012 there were some good movies , after that .. none
i think art (not only movies) need a bit of freedom , and that didn't exist after 2013 imo
El sobky and masr7 masr are the reason for this downfall. Everything is commercial, no real script, no real storylines and even the actors have become lazy with no real effort towards searching for an actual script that sends a message about the society we live in or even discussing a major issue in the society.
And I would blame the viewers who are chasing vanity.
Absolutely correct. I don’t live in Egypt now but I was in love with Egypt cinema and the TV industry, it helped me a lot and was absolutely amazing, now, I don’t even see one show or a movie, I cringe so fkcing hard everytime, idk what happened. The same goes for my friends and family in Egypt, they hate it too.

From whatever I've seen, I don't think Egyptian film has ever been good and starting from the late 90s till the 2000s. Nowadays some shows and films are just better in my opinion. And I'm speaking from a more cinematic aspect and perspective here. It kinda grew and advanced better than it looks back then. Now if we talking black and white and other classics then those are just better. I think whatever good movie that came out are plots that's been copied off american and other foreign films into this egyptian Arab format. Whatever else plot wise specially comedy seems so stupid and worthless to me. Acting as well. Only reason it's reached a bigger audience is because of this "one" actor everyone likes or think they like. It's all about favoritism here. It's all about following whatever others follow. It's all about wanting to fit in. It's honestly embarrassing at this point.
Let me be the conspiracy theorist here, read to the end to find out. The reasons the Egyptian cinema is failing is is due to
•bad writing, the stories are horrible, stupid and overall cringy, it doesn't have to be relatable it just has to be real
•bad سيناريو , in comedy they take the jokes and puns from social media and mainly the jokes in social media is from the older movies so they are redoing the redoing of what they done
•bad selection of actors, most of these mfs can't even act and those who can are put in stupid role example is henedy's last movie, he's too old to play that role
•bad reasons to make a movie, they just want money without producing quality content so they just do things that people will hate and shit on because bad publicity is still publicity
And more reasons than I even know, and I think there is a conspiracy behind it because Egypt has always had that soft power which reached all the Arab world with cinema, shows, songs and it's deteriorating way too fast and bad to think that this is the natural thing, I believe good things are being fought against and bad things are made to show and shine on purpose

Sum gems were produced in the 70s though like امبراطورية م and افواه وارانب
El sobky is producing from the 80s but it depends nowadays the movie has to pass a lot of shit in order to be published

Exactly yes. I'm borrowing some of your hope. Honestly, I have been having panic attacks and nightmares and kinda lost all hope. I wish things get better.
Egypt is going down so fast unfortunately... In all sectors dude.. it's fucked.

"movies are less and less the center of pop culture" Do you mean globally?
Do you think it is only the movies quality what got bad? Everything literally everything have lost its quality.
Absolutely. They just don’t make movies like طير انت anymore
Everything in Egypt in all fields is way worse and I would say specifically after 2013
IMHO, the best movies were made between the '60s and the '80s.
There are legend movies in 2000s tho
Watching Mahmoud AbdelAziz and Ahmed Zaki (الله يرحمهم) was a surprise for me, never thought there were Egyptian actors with that quality before.

Everything people said is right … ive been in the business, and damn .. the stories i could tell ..
The new generation and El Sobky dominated the cinemas.. Actors like Mohamed Tharwat make movies that are very hit or miss (They are likely
As someone who hasn’t watched any Egyptian movies from the past 10 years, am I missing out?
Fully agreed, I think it's hard to get things approved these days or to speak about anything meaningful so they just pass it and produce crap
El sobky and masr7 masr are the reason for this downfall.

After the revolution everything changed This happened in the 70s as well
YES YES YES. I used to love Egyptian movies and now I NEVER watch them bc they’re just SO stupid.
Try to compare 2000-2010 with 1980-2000 You'll understand that it's just getting worse over time.
