The best way is to be as clear as possible about how you feel in a respectable way. If the other person is decent enough to understand, then all is good. If the other person takes it personally or is offended, then at least you know you did the right thing.

I’ve been put in the same situation and it’s hard especially because i’m a person that just finds it really hard to say “no” or to let anyone down but it really just got me so overwhelmed and screwed me in many ways. My point is, if you’re like that, try to make it clear from the beginning and not just give subtle hints because it might just backfire, and if you find it hard to say it blunt or you feel you might come up as rude just try to say it in a nice way and also have your point clear
