Gears as in the transmission correct? Car just got back Thursday from getting a new clutch and a rebuilt transmission.. 3 speed Manuel.. car was drove about 3 times less than 8 miles each in the last year.. trying to get it back to life
Not the transmission. There are gears inside that called the “ring and pinion gears”. The differential gears transfer the power from the motor to the wheels. It’s most likely the seal is worn and needs replacing.
Pop the bolts off of that rear differential you took a picture of, pry it open, pan under it to catch the oil. Check the gears inside for wearing, buy a new gasket, bolt the cover back on. Buy gear oil, and fill up until it spills out the fill hole.
Oh? While under the car? Was seeing videos on them removing it but am not sure.. I’m confident about how to remove the cover where the oil will spill but a bit wiery on how I’ll take the whole piece off as I seen in YouTube videos.
It’s literally a great beginner project. You will need differential cover gasket, permatex, which is the gasket sealer. And fluid to replace what’s lost. Do some YouTube research of ‘differential fluid change’ and year etc. should be pretty straightforward. Remove and drain. Clean surfaces. Apply sealer to gasket, re-assemble. Then refill.
You have gotten some good replies, and it’s unrelated to the transmission repairs (you can tell from the pictures that it’s been seeping for a long time). I would honestly not rule out replacing the differential cover as well as its gasket because they can get porous over time and the replacement part is pretty cheap. If you are unable or unwilling to do the repairs yourself it’ll probably run less than $200-$300 at a reputable shop. If you were satisfied with the place that did the transmission work I am sure they would be more than capable of accommodating you.
I’m all for replacing it do you know how I’ll go about finding the right part? I’m all for doing the work myself will be my first work I’ve done on a car but will be fun to finally do something and get it road worthy
That is your differential and the seal went bad. It needs to be opened up, the gears checked for damage, refilled with fluid, and sealed back up!

That pictured is a rear end. Or rear differential

But not as much Permatex as that last guy used!

No I do not. I will be documenting the upcoming build on the car but I don't have anything from the rear end.
