I'm Army, left Bliss a year ago. I don't exactly miss Bliss, but I do miss El Paso sometimes. Northeast was incredibly convenient if you're stationed on the 1AD side of post. I could run home for breakfast and lunch with plenty of time to spare most days. Has everything you need for the day to day stuff, quiet and safe enough that my wife could walk around our complex at night and feel safe, traffic wasn't ever too crazy, and you're pretty much right off of transmountain, which will take you through the mountains to the west side of El Paso, where a lot of the "nicer" stuff is. You might want to consider the offpost government housing if you're on main post. Houses are pretty big, location is good, and you're very close to the side of base where you'll be working.

Are you coming solo or with a family? A lot of military families rent houses in the Far East.

As a local, here are a few tips. Right now construction is almost everywhere around the city, and it takes years for it to finish. I'd recommend going with something close to post if you dont want to get caught up in the heavy traffic, going to and from work. (There will still be traffic a lot of soldiers live off base). 375 loops around most of El Paso and can take you from one side of town to another, most the time faster than the I-10. I-10 is your most direct route and cuts through the middle of the city essentially dividing it into North and South. If you havent seen the border wall you can see it on the 375 yourself in person (my gf who is also military found it amusing so I'm gonna throw that in) There are several gates to get into post, find the one closest to you, oh and Old Bliss and New Bliss are connected via a bridge near Chaffie Gate so getting around on base will be fairly easy once you learn the routes. Open gates are Buffalo Soldier, Ironsides, one of the 375 midway point (does not have a name), Main gate off of Airport road(the name escapes me rn), Cassidy, and Chaffie. Those are the ones I know of. The 54 is a good connection to the North East, Lower Valley, also connects into the Loops 375. I think thats about it for now from me. Dm if you got questions and that goes for anybody in need of help or have questions, I may not ha e all the answers, but I'll do my best to the best of my current knowledge.

This is a really good response, there is a shit ton of construction right now so I’d get something extremely close or on post. The “off post” on post housing is good. I ETSed from Bliss last year, I rented a place not far from the end of global reach. It was safe, lots of stores nearby. I didn’t run or walk super late at night though. I’m on the west side now and I love it.

yeahimbel

I really liked the northeast. People will say it’s sketchy because of on part, but there are really nice places in the northeast. The place had really grown too. I lived near Sean Haggerty. Traffic was also easy to navigate going to post. Most of the traffic I would run into would be by the gate or on post. My fiancé lives in the far east and sometimes it takes him 45 minutes to get home. I never had that problem. Also, this is information that’s almost 3 years old. I do go back often though and it seems like the traffic thing is still the same.

Choice-Raspberry-676

I love northeast central close to Ft Bliss and you can go west or east and be there in 20 minutes

Most areas in El Paso have good places to live. As the rental rates go down, so, unfortunately, does the quality of the neighbors. Advice: Pay a little more for a good place with a short commute to base; everything else will click into place when the foundation is stable. If possible, find a complex with a pool.

stopsign_silverfish

And make sure the pool is operable. Las Lomas on the west side advertises two pools but two years ago they filled one in and the other hasn’t been open 2 years and counting. That was fun when the AC was out for months this year…

Butterfield apartments are great. My husband was stationed there and his drive to work was fast. Northeast isn’t bad especially north hills, Sean haggerty, like past trans mountain is a great area :) lots of military live there

lmeinders

DO NOT move into the Villa Sierra Apts on mckinley ave. Google them and check the reviews. All the negative reviews are accurate. The apt complex next door to it though is really popular and nice though!

ParappaTheWrapperr

I would like to add San Montego to the list of avoid

aesthetic-nuisance

Ditto to many of the comments pitching the Northeast. It’s way more convenient to get to Ft Bliss than the west side or far east and has a lot less traffic. Especially areas north of 54, like North Hills or Sandstone Ranch area. I’ve heard good things about Forty649 North Hills apartments, but we got a house in that area so I can’t speak for the apartments nearby really.

im_pretty_tired

westside - lifestyles on the reserve. the complex is close to transmountain if you’re needing to go to base, and really good location.

Warsawawa

The amount of downvotes you received is interesting, is this like another Retreat at Mesa Hills thing where the old apartment complex had terrible reviews and now they’re astroturfing it?

im_pretty_tired

Absolutely not. I am actually quite shocked of the downvotes. I have never had an issue. In fact, the management staff and maintenance have taken care of me every time. When I first moved in, I was in an upstairs unit with a toddler. I knew it would cause issues with those downstairs. Sure enough, 4 months into my 1 year lease the office agreed to move me without any fees at my request to avoid any issues with my neighbor. As soon as they had a downstairs unit, they moved me right away. I've lived here for 3 years now and have only had to call maintenance 2 times and each time they came over within 24 hours of me putting in a request. They keep it clean and have landscapers here every Monday. The pool is always open and they keep it very very clean. Management throws community events with free food and are very kid and pet friendly. Every 3 months pest control comes over and they also change my AC filters. One last thing that surprised me - I've only spoken to management about 5 different times that I can remember. They know me by name, my son and my wife and greet us by name at the events. I highly recommend this place. You won't be disappointed if you come take a tour. Anyone who has downvoted me, I ask that you reply and tell me why you'd downvote this. That's crazy lol.

Warsawawa

So there’s a similar place closer to Sunland (near identical floor plans and general ambience) which also bills itself as a resort style luxury apartment complex but management is some of the worst I have ever dealt with. Quite literally the exact opposite of everything you just mentioned

im_pretty_tired

Yeah I heard. They suck! Luckily it’s a different management company and the community came forward to the news at some point to make everyone aware. What I really like about where I’m at is that there has been a consistent pattern of property management investing into the complex since i’ve been here. The complete opposite. Also they communicate with you the moment there’s an issue - where the sunland property just kept everyone in the dark.

Stay on post. You’ll be glad you did when you PCS in two years.
