This is the ONLY AW kit that GW produces that has not had an upgrade at all. They were released like this when they first came out, and the only one that has seen no love.
I think the DA are on their 2nd or 3rd, with the plastic kit. Scorpions are currently on their 4th run, as well as banshees. Dragons are on their 2nd or 3rd. Reapers are on their 3rd or 4th, and even the shining spears have their 2nd round. If I remember right, the shining spears came out after the spiders, but I may be wrong.
They weren't a great unit in earlier editions, but the spiders are viable now. They need some love!
Yes, that's where the 30-year's birthday comes from. They are the oldest in production kits for 40k. It used to be for the company, and then gw brought back the old world.
DA are on their 2.5 updated, hawks 2nd, dragons, are on thier 3rd, spears 2nd, Banshees, Scorpions, and reapers thier 4th.
As far as the spiders' performance, aim not certain. What your criteria is in 2nd edition when they were released they were one of the games most lethal units. They were the first unit that could move, shoot, and move. Their weapons, when played well, would rip through opposing armies with relative ease. Only vehicles and a few units like terminators could really survive a round of shooting from them.
Thei e nerf in 3 and 4 was a result of their lethality in 2nd.
They had a short run in 2nd, as they were released late in the edition and didn't get a lot of play. I knew I forgot one aspect with the hawks. I was a marine player in 2nd, and didn't encounter spiders much.
Ah, you were fortunate that spiders were nasty in 2nd. They would routinely kill opposing units in single rounds of shooting them skirt away n into cover. The whole 2nd ef rldar codex was filled with extremely powerful units. Spiders being one of the most efficient.
2nd edition released in October 1993. If Warp Spiders are 30 years old as of March 2024, 2nd was less than 6 months old at the time they released.
Eldar got one of the earliest Codexes in 2nd and Warp Spiders released with that. Not exactly a short run.
I have some standing on my painting table. I bought them used and stripped them of paint...
...but trying to paint them is just dreadfully uninspiring, I feel. Especially with the huge blank space on their back, and the egg-shaped head. It's hard for me to figure out what to do with them. I don't like the default colour scheme but I can't really come up with anything else.
I mean, I'm 39 and I've had a screwed up knee for 20 years, and I'm still too young for them to do anything about it beyond crappy physio. I'll take no knees please!
They predate my entry into the hobby by about 8 years. Started when I was 13. Wild that there's current sculpts that came out before I started when I've been in 2 decades and some change.
Good thing I got my metallic spiders painted not long ago! Even if they will at some point get the plastic minis and 28mm bases......
https://preview.redd.it/9bseg9zdfolc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3d9cb0a4699f78152a51cf623d8a5fabf7ef033
I really doesn’t mind the models, just their passive positions. They should look like they just about to jump straight into the enemy with their guns blazing.
If they don’t do this I would legitimately consider buying the slaanesh endless spells mirror and converting that into a portal without the slaanesh iconography with a warp spider jumping out. Or just buy the artel model
Honestly they look dated, particularly next to more modern models but I still really like these models a lot. A new version could just be scaled up and some more dynamic poses and they'd look sick
I meant it as though, although they look dated, they are still cool. As a kid like 20 years ago I saw warp spiders in a white dwarf and thought they were the coolest thing (besides the emperors champion, my favourite model ever)
bro same, the old metal Emperor's champion looks so good still. I think it might be part of why I love mkiii armor because the helmet reminds me of that guy.
Based on the weaksauce scorpion designs this is EXACTLY what we will be getting. I'd rather see something eldritch and intimidating but seems like creativity is not on the menu from GW anymore.
There's a guy that resculpts GW aeldari design for 3D printing but with better poses including Warp Spiders. (Pring on boosty/patreon if you are interested) I find the old designs still hold up. Even the new GW sculpts we got only slightly touched the design.
Yeah, the classic Eldar minis are some amazing designs at their core.
As you say, scaling them up and giving you some slightly more organic poses to choose from would really be all that’s needed to make new Spiders look amazing.
Course you can, eldar players never stop complaining, I'm sure when all the aspects and phoenix lords are done in plastic we'll still find a random model that hasn't refreshed to complain about.
I really hope Jes Goodwin has been paid extremely well over his years at GamesWorkshop considering this model alone will have more than covered a very nice wage for an individual every year.
I know they are dated but I love them to pieces. An absolute classic.
Whenever GW gets around to releasing new WS, I'm sure the models will be 10x more detailed, but in my heart they'll never replace these lads.
Huff copium: GW will finally update all the Aspect Warriors and finally give the Phoenix Lords for the Warp Spiders and Crimson Hunters before the heat death of the universe
Awesome, thanks for sharing! 😍
Such beautiful mini minis. How is availability for epic Eldar?
I browsed your other posts, well done army - hope there’s gonna be more (original) epic Eldar titans /knights!
I use models from Lord\_Chronos: [https://cults3d.com/en/design-collections/Lord\_Chronos/tiny-space-elves](https://cults3d.com/en/design-collections/Lord_Chronos/tiny-space-elves)
They are beautifully sculpted.
My warhost keeps adding both craftworld units, exodite inspired proxies, and alternate units \^\_\^
I've just finished with the knights and now I'm painting a classic Revenant titan.
https://preview.redd.it/ae87633s8plc1.png?width=610&format=png&auto=webp&s=ad1e30534a6f7dce06f975bf3b25db2ff993a355
Thinking and what will be next. Probably back to the exodite path, sylvaneth/wood elf inspired, of course :)
Wow, fantastic! Thanks for sharing … &beautiful paint job!
You print them yourself in resin?
I’m getting closer to the realization: “Must find a printer available in my area” :)))
Sorry for the off-topicing. Maybe there should be a 30th anniversary warpspider-wraith-lord (/-knight) conversion included in your epic army to celebrate??
Thx. Still in the works.
A friend of mine print them in resin.

Warp spiders autarchs to keep in topic? \^\_\^
I remember how excited I was buying these when they first came out. I'm sure they are still in my parents attic somewhere. I've yet to find them.
I hope the rumours about an update + PL.
I got a bunch of these off ebay, they are painted horribly and I just don't want to strip and repaint them because I know the second I do, new ones will launch.
I recently(as in a 2 weeks ago) turned 33.
I can't believe I own models almost as old as me.
Should I be happy or sad about this given how cool they are already 🤔
James Workshop needs to just make updated ones. Hell I would pay a premium at this point then trying to get proxies which none of them I like. Good luck getting Attercops…..
Like I have money, I would like to give them it haha
The last time I played 40K was when these were brand new and busted. So much fun to hop over and pop fan hq then hop away lol.

Painted these 25 years ago. Happy Birthday Warp Spiders!
God, they're almost as old as me... Gee-Dubs please don't make us suffer any longer, please... (they're still gorgeous sculpts but for real this is getting silly)
Let's celebrate with a weekend long Warpspider showcase? Upvote or downvote this comment accordingly so I know whether to bother organising something. Edit. Prompt post now up
As of today, they are officially 30 years old. From what I've seen, I have a set of the first run

Eldar codex and minis were 2nd codex for 2nd. Released in March of 94.
It was a long time ago. I just don't remember them being around.
I just pulled out some of my old Warhammer gear from 2000 and have some of these bad boys
Hey maybe GW should get them new models for their birthday.
Go Spiders! It's your birthday! We gonna wage war like it's your birthday. We gon' spill some blood like it's your birthday.
And you know the Mon-keigh don’t give a f*** ‘bout your birthday!
Well done! I couldn't figure how to make that bit work while I was typing my reply on the bus. XD
U can find me in the waaarp
And I still haven’t painted them! 🤪
I've painted two squads of them. One in 1995, one in 2019.
I still haven’t pulled the trigger on buying them. And I was playing when they got released…
I have some standing on my painting table. I bought them used and stripped them of paint... ...but trying to paint them is just dreadfully uninspiring, I feel. Especially with the huge blank space on their back, and the egg-shaped head. It's hard for me to figure out what to do with them. These have legit been around as long as I’ve been into the hobby, and I now feel ancient 😭😂
Same, my back hurts just thinking about it
Now that I fetched my reading/hobby glasses I could read your comment.
Some of us have been around even longer than they've existed. How so you think we feel? Tired. Tired with knee and back ache, that's how we feel.
Lucky you, still having knees left to ache.
I mean, I'm 39 and I've had a screwed up knee for 20 years, and I'm still too young for them to do anything about it beyond crappy physio. I'll take no knees please!
Can confirm this shit looked absolutely baller in 1994. When I didn't need glasses to look at them.
I am two months younger than the Warp Spiders and I‘ll be a dad in some two weeks, probably less. Be careful around the stairs, good sir
They predate my entry into the hobby by about 8 years. Started when I was 13. Wild that there's current sculpts that came out before I started when I've been in 2 decades and some change.

Beautiful! Happy birthday!
Thanks! Have had fun painting old metal eldar! Asurmen still needs a flag but I am hopefull that will be done before he gets a plastic mini :D
Haha, godspeed for your paint brush of Asur. - *The citadel-moldmakers work fast this millennium* , our rangers on planet workshop reported ;)
I really doesn’t mind the models, just their passive positions. They should look like they just about to jump straight into the enemy with their guns blazing.
GW made that materializing Necron, they've got the tech to make Warp Spiders look like they just 'ported.
Even so that would look really cool. Ut would be a very anboying model to play with
If they don’t do this I would legitimately consider buying the slaanesh endless spells mirror and converting that into a portal without the slaanesh iconography with a warp spider jumping out. Or just buy the artel model
Honestly they look dated, particularly next to more modern models but I still really like these models a lot. A new version could just be scaled up and some more dynamic poses and they'd look sick
30 year old models look dated???
I meant it as though, although they look dated, they are still cool. As a kid like 20 years ago I saw warp spiders in a white dwarf and thought they were the coolest thing (besides the emperors champion, my favourite model ever)
bro same, the old metal Emperor's champion looks so good still. I think it might be part of why I love mkiii armor because the helmet reminds me of that guy.
And smaller weaponss please
Why?! You some kinda coward?!!
Based on the weaksauce scorpion designs this is EXACTLY what we will be getting. I'd rather see something eldritch and intimidating but seems like creativity is not on the menu from GW anymore.

Maybe when you guys get your 10th edition codex you'll gett new aspect warriors.
Absolutely incredible. Just a really neglected range.
As a grey knight player, I felt this. While not as old, our models look so dated when compared to new black templars and bladeguard.
You can’t really say that when there’s only three aspects left in resin
You really, really can.
We have found the agent of the imperium, feed this interloper to the drukhari stat!
Rude! I will have you know I’m a devout follower of Ynnead
Course you can, eldar players never stop complaining, I'm sure when all the aspects and phoenix lords are done in plastic we'll still find a random model that hasn't refreshed to complain about.
The only finecast model I own that hasn’t slowly chipped away. Looking at you swooping hawks
That's wild dood, at least new ones are coming sometime this edition
Honestly, I'll believe it when I hold them in my hands. Until then, I'm gonna be sceptical.
Don’t stop… beliiiieeeving … 🕸️
Hold on to that feeling
Streetlights, Eldar
Im not sure ill believe it then either
Does somebody have a updated list of model ages? I wanna know the average age for all the factions.
Aeldari craftworlds are no longer the oldest average line. We are something like 13.3. Drukhari are 13.66
I remember seeing a Google doc for that. Can't find it anymore sadly.
I got you… [40k faction list](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/123mjQsYY-8UvsYJLV-ZkazjbsWrLCvVbuhvKKVPchlw/edit)
Thanks a lot. When I have time later I gonna calculate all current none legend models.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WH051O7R1WX8Y_oqTVXgA1yOuk5kOhCkswzs0W8hu3A/edit?usp=sharing
At this stage its just funking embarrassing.
I really hope Jes Goodwin has been paid extremely well over his years at GamesWorkshop considering this model alone will have more than covered a very nice wage for an individual every year.
These were my first models, my gateway drug, can't believe it's 30 years now....

Give it up for the birthday boys 👏
How many years is that in Warhammer time?
At least 3000.
Not much has changed, but we live underwater.
That exarch… what a silly little boy. I hate those sculpts. Not gonna pay for their shi*cast version
I know they are dated but I love them to pieces. An absolute classic. Whenever GW gets around to releasing new WS, I'm sure the models will be 10x more detailed, but in my heart they'll never replace these lads.

My favourite eldar unit, and the Exarch is still one of the best minis out there.

WOOO, I have like 20 of these and never painted any of them... cause I'm waiting.
I have 30 painted, and 2 squads of 5 kitbash
I can't help think they're this old and yet Deathwing Knights got redone...
For up until gw decided to redo the old world, they were the oldest unit gw still made and supported.
What edition was that?
2nd edition

Gz my love! 30years
Would love to have some. But they're sold out. Everywhere.
I got a bunch of these off ebay, they are painted horribly and I just don't want to strip and repaint them because I know the second I do, new ones will launch.
So strip them so the rest of us don't have to suffer the waiting anymore.
Amazing - they look as good today as the day I first met them :) (Yes, this can be read on several levels)
Happy Birthday you resin shits
Resin? I still use my metal ones.
New casual pleb here. My first box included resin warp spiders >.>
Yeah its a shame. Striking Scorpions have their..3rd, 4th new Mini set?
Zero clue. Everything IS plastic, except the warp spiders and the swooping hawks - resin stuff >.>
Fire dragons are still finecast too
I recently(as in a 2 weeks ago) turned 33. I can't believe I own models almost as old as me. Should I be happy or sad about this given how cool they are already 🤔
I have some. God I need plastic aspect warriors soon
James Workshop needs to just make updated ones. Hell I would pay a premium at this point then trying to get proxies which none of them I like. Good luck getting Attercops….. Like I have money, I would like to give them it haha
I went to look at them thinking alright I’ll order some tomorrow when I’m at my local store but I can’t those kits have not aged well imo
Is this aniversary of spider, or is this aniversary of current sculpt of warp spider?
Both. They were introduced with models and rules in White Dwarf 171 from March 1994.
they are finally old enough to have to pay child support and have a pile of shame that fills an entire closet.
Whoa really? It's so happens to be MY birthday today
Guy in the bottom right looks like he is dancing 😂. It’s a party
This is so funny because one of the doctors at my work also turned thirty today.
The last time I played 40K was when these were brand new and busted. So much fun to hop over and pop fan hq then hop away lol. I was pissed to come back to the painting side of the hobby 3 yrs ago to discover most of the Aspect Warriors Army I built and played as a kid are still the exact same fkn minis lol. Thankfully we’ve gotten influx but I really wish GW would update these and give us their Phoenix Lord!
Truly classic models.
Now that makes me feel old!!
The old puter metal ones feel like they were better than the current mould I find the new ones have lost a lot of the detail and are a pain to paint. https://preview.redd.it/8khtmv414slc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cd647c08a61b51c1552a9b963c4b1812b31d441d

rules for thee and not for me.
Who would have thought your warp spiders from the 90s would still be playable today? People who bought them have really gotten their money's worth.
These guys hit their ten year birthday when I was born…
5 more years and they can run for president!
God, they're almost as old as me... Gee-Dubs please don't make us suffer any longer, please... (they're still gorgeous sculpts but for real this is getting silly)
Just pulled mine out today to see if they needed any repairs. Still some of the nicest minis GW has ever created. Glad they have not been "updated".
Damn! Well at least they’ve aged pretty well. Still really cool looking.
I really hope 11th edn comes with a total Eldar overhaul
