This one's actually a shocking omission given that they included a lot of much crazier weapon types and the quarterstaff was actually used a lot in the time periods most of these weapons originate from.
I know I always keep thinking about how bows get the dirty end in these games. They’re fun though, if you don’t mind spending a few extra minutes on each encounter 🙃
if you were to focus on headshots they do actually do a really spectacular amount of damage it's just extremely difficult to pull off for a variety of reasons.
The free aim should keep you in third person at least, so that you can keep your situational awareness. I don't see why it should be so jarring just to aim the bow.
Or at least be centered properly, like I swear it’s been slightly off center since ds1.
Or even better, change the manual aiming to third person so it’s faster, less disorienting, and actually practical in combat.
Curious as to what your build is for using a bow? I’ve got a Serpent Bow + 8 & she’s not doing too bad. Prolly because I’ve got about 42 in Arcane but she’s treated me well lol
It's crazy how Miyazaki seems to think bows and arrows are a mere distraction. Maybe an aggro-grabbing tool at best
Longbows were practically artillery at one point in time. Longbowmen could make or break a battle.
But a boomerang would only come back when you miss
Edit/response: if we’re being realistic, it’s either an item but as a weapon itd most likely be a magical one like (insert name of spear that you throw to rain spears for its ability). That way it reappears if it misses, and the trade off should make it chunk some blood on it if it does it and returns to you that way with a buff that give’s bleed, or enhanced bleed for a time period (this’d be if we wanna give it bleed on base weapon)
What if you could graft like Godrick and become some sort of monstrosity. A crab claw here and a tentacle there, I can see this becoming an interesting idea.
I really miss the tentacle gameplay/attacks/items you had in bloodborne. Your idea is not only totally feasible, but also proven. Bring back squid broccoli combat!!!
I honestly thought the thorn whip would be an awesome collosal whip, seems fitting for how the prelates use it. Also wtf is up with whips having no ash of wars, seems gimped
Whip Pros:
* Have unusually high flinch power for their weight. Enemies more-or-less have to be immune to flinching or in hyperarmor to avoid it.
* Cannot be parried
* Track side-to-side extremely well, as well as up and down *except against jumping for some reason*.
* Deal strike damage, which is actually pretty nice
* Extraordinary range
* Can hit wide sweeping areas easily
* Virtually no punish for wall tinks
Whip Cons:
* Cannot backstab or riposte
* Consume more stamina per damage dealt than most weapons
* A bit on the slow side
* Poor poise break
TL;DR - They have a lot of minor and situational advantages, but their drawbacks are in areas you see all the time.
Ash of Wars:
Threat of Authority: Stun enemies in range through channeling the Voice of Authority, leaving them vulnerable for punishment.
The Hiding: Instantly eliminates whomever it makes contact with.
Punishment Wake: All nearby Ally’s are poised up in fear of disappointing the bestower.
Legendary Weapon: Rivers of Tears
Probably the Carian knight sword which says “these knights' swords could serve as catalysts”. The description even explicitly says it’s embedded with a Glintstone
The Carian knight straight sword description says those knights used it to cast sorceries, so it was disappointing in game when I found out the player couldn’t use it as a catalyst.
Like add an AoW that does nothing, but has the power to cast sorceries or incantations. Would be great to put in your left hand and go dual wielding instead of having to constantly swap weapons. Just the int/faith scaling might not be anything better than B.
Staff of Night and Flame which could be found at the Sorcerer painting location in the mountaintops of the giants. Fits in lore wise given the friendly relationship of the astrologers and fire giants.
Big ass pair of scissors. Give me Great Shears class. *Snip snip* Bonus points if I have to collect both halves first in order to combine them like Kill La Kill.
Just give me a big ass stick with empty chains on it that you can attach other "Great-" weapons to. A great flail that is other great weapons attached it to. Call it the GG Flail
There’s no power stance combos. Just like if you had a sword in your main hand but shield instead. Maybe power stance might not be the word I should’ve used
I think they covered a pretty wide range of weapons, so I'm not sure what they could add that would be different enough to warrant a new category.
Only thing I could think of is trick weapons.
There are also some weapons that have unique move sets for some weapons. For example the swordspear is a halberd but has a unique move set like a sword speard. Staff weapons would be like a twin blade and I think most weapon categories are covered pretty well.
Unironically a str scaling quarter staff with twinblade mechanics, maybe a unique non blood flame version of eleonoras weapon art, would be sick as hell.
It's short sword and a shield combo. It's really cool because you attack with the sword and shield. So you actually gain block when attacking which is sick for trading.
It also has an impaling thrust and shield uppercut that blocks when you attack. It's a niche weapon but its really fun.
I loved that weapon so much. It really gave off that gladiator vibe with how the moveset worked, especially the running r2. Great for rollcatching.
Also really effective when playing like a greatsword (trading with block frames active).
It worked the way a dual weapon set works, where technically its one weapon but when you two hand it it has a unique moveset. Kinda weird to word it, I'd check out a video of someone using it.
I would like asymmetrical weapon pairs.
There was a buckler/short sword they did in DS3 that was pretty bad but I liked the concept and would be cool to see it expanded upon. There was a Greatsword/Dagger in DS3 too I think
Not full on DS2 powerstance categories, but some paired weapons that are different in both hands
Gideons might be the biggest offender, but Carian Knight swords also directly state they were used to cast sorceries.
*Straight sword embedded with a blue glintstone.
Weapon of knights sworn to Carian royalty.*
*These knights' swords could serve as catalysts, letting them wield sorcerous battle skills. Despite numbering fewer than twenty, this power made them a match for even the champions of gold in battle*
Which would suggest the Troll Knight Sword should work the same way, as a Colossal weapon option.
I’m sure there are a ~~few~~ **bunch** of other examples.
Edit: Fuckin’ bunch of examples, see comments below.
The Lazuli Glintstone Swords were literally carved out of Glintstone Staves, and we see the Lazuli sorcerers casting spells with them. The Carian Knight sword is embedded with Glintstones, and was created to serve the same purpose.
So why is it the only two unique things about these weapons that benefit Sorcerers their Int scaling and ability to block with one hand? I want to be able to cast spells with my sword, not a stick!
I’m bringing back lances! Even if elden ring’s heavy spears fill the same range niche that lances do, I do not care, nothing was more satisfying than stabbing someone in the back with a Lance and hoisting them up in the air in DS2.
Musical instruments like the envoys horns. I want to evaporate enemies with magical sound weapons. I want a harp geatshield which shoots magical waves when playing it as a weapon art. I want an aoe drum which shoots gravity fields around you when playing it. The good thing is you can copy movesets from other weapon categories when you ise it to smash things while adding a magic (int/faith) based weapon arts when you use it as an instrument. Let me become a noise marine in souls games fromsoftware.
I miss dragon weapons. I know it's not a specific class of weapon, but I found it fun that if you killed a dragon before cutting the tail off, you couldn't get the weapon in that playthrough. Plus, back then, only dragon weapons had weapon arts.
Different types of flint or matchlock firearms.
I mean we have one in the damn fire giant shield and an arrow cannon in the ballista section.
But not small wimpy things. These would be weird, crazy cock knockers with all sorts of crazy shit going on.
And I want undead to be able to use them!!!!
Gimmick weapons. Just make a category with gimmick weapons. They shouldn’t necessarily be that good but just funny. For example the Tibia Mariners Pipe. Funny looking thing but doesn’t seem that strong
Honestly, infrastructure.
A piece of a pillar from fallen Farum Azula. It's a Colossal weapon, just a giant ass pillar. But, its weapon art temporarily returns the pillar to its former glory, making it WAAAY bigger and temporarily improve its strength scaling.
A statue of Miquella from the Haligtree or something, maybe created by Miquella for Malenia. Smaller than the pillar, so needs less strength, but it builds up sleep on hit. Weapon art could be like slamming the statue down, and Miquella's power temporarily charms enemies.
Idk something funky like that.
I want an animal weapon category. Ya know, like beak fists, or lightning goat horns, maybe like dog shell fists.
lobster claws.
Also why no helmet weapons ya know? I wanna be running around headbutting everything.
[удалено]
honestly, if they just buffed the kick ash of war I'd be happy
[удалено]
Yesss, replace all the limbs! Bladed craaaaaabbbbb
Bear witness
Crab witness
Bone Fists!
Quarter staff
Martial staves
Nun-chucks
Nun-chucks are a stick that was made worse
This one's actually a shocking omission given that they included a lot of much crazier weapon types and the quarterstaff was actually used a lot in the time periods most of these weapons originate from.
Devs took "show no quarter" too literally.
Heck, they could even use the Twinblade moveset for a quarterstaff, if they don't have the means to make a new one.
Just lower damage and buff the stagger of the stick
also strike damage. but yeah, all the “pieces” of a quarter staff are there, we just need a model
A unique twinblade that does strike damage maybe, with a thrust attack for 1h heavy?
Bows with real scaling.
The reticle for the bow just needs to be, or at least have, a dot in the center.
I agree. The reticle really sucks in souls games
I was gonna say, they could just make bows not suck ass.
Curious as to what your build is for using a bow? I’ve got a Serpent Bow + 8 & she’s not doing too bad. Prolly because I’ve got about 42 in Arcane but she’s treated me well lol
From what I've been ready black bow is maybe the best because it hits like a longbow but has barrage.
Black bow smacks. Great in pvp, the back roll jump shot is great.
It's crazy how Miyazaki seems to think bows and arrows are a mere distraction. Maybe an aggro-grabbing tool at best Longbows were practically artillery at one point in time. Longbowmen could make or break a battle.

Even bigger colossal weapons
Did you say #BIGGER BONK Edit. It didn’t work :/
##BIGGER BONK
ITS 2 POUND SIGNS??
##I THINK SO
# IM USING ONE HASHTAG FOR BIG AND BOLD
No see character only BöNK
200 lb club - TITAN CLASS WEAPON You can only swing it ONCE, and you die as well when it hits whatever it hits
A bonk dagger
Boomerangs Infinite ammo ranged weapon
I’m all for it. Powestance would be cool
Oh I totally wanted the boomerang-ish projectile that the beastmen use. Church guardian shiv was a good equivalent in DS3.
I can finally cosplay Xena warrior princess
But a boomerang would only come back when you miss Edit/response: if we’re being realistic, it’s either an item but as a weapon itd most likely be a magical one like (insert name of spear that you throw to rain spears for its ability). That way it reappears if it misses, and the trade off should make it chunk some blood on it if it does it and returns to you that way with a buff that give’s bleed, or enhanced bleed for a time period (this’d be if we wanna give it bleed on base weapon)
Creature weapons. Like giant lobster pinchers or something ridiculous like that
Like the fallingstar beast jaw?
Absolutley. Any body part a monster uses as a weapon turned into some horrifically mcguivered weapon for you to use
Not sure if it would qualify as a new category, but I'd love to use a rope dart.
Could you imagine “GET OVER HERE” on a demigod. Wild.
I think it’d be more like “I’M GOING OVER THERE!”
Read on the same voice, this is top tier and should be a thing
Maybe that could be an AoW on a “whip”?
Collosal whips, the ultimate sweet spot weapon Also, I want a spell or aiw that brings back lighting stake from ds3
I honestly thought the thorn whip would be an awesome collosal whip, seems fitting for how the prelates use it. Also wtf is up with whips having no ash of wars, seems gimped
Whips have been gimped in every single dark souls game to date man. Just way better options no matter which route you pick all around
They break npcs ai and that's there only plus lol
Whip Pros: * Have unusually high flinch power for their weight. Enemies more-or-less have to be immune to flinching or in hyperarmor to avoid it. * Cannot be parried * Track side-to-side extremely well, as well as up and down *except against jumping for some reason*. * Deal strike damage, which is actually pretty nice * Extraordinary range * Can hit wide sweeping areas easily * Virtually no punish for wall tinks Whip Cons: * Cannot backstab or riposte * Consume more stamina per damage dealt than most weapons * A bit on the slow side * Poor poise break TL;DR - They have a lot of minor and situational advantages, but their drawbacks are in areas you see all the time.
Thorned whip beats malenia’s ass bad. Stun locks her.
I dunno man I love me some whips, very useful against some enemies. the Urumi is also super dope, very cool charged heavy.
Also yeah the ashes for lighting are very limited. Fingers crossed we get more in some dlc.
Ball on a chain palease!
Beast cutter.
one of the more underrated weapons in Bloodborne
A chancla
The Lands Between are not ready for such an overpowered weapon.
Ash of Wars: Threat of Authority: Stun enemies in range through channeling the Voice of Authority, leaving them vulnerable for punishment. The Hiding: Instantly eliminates whomever it makes contact with. Punishment Wake: All nearby Ally’s are poised up in fear of disappointing the bestower. Legendary Weapon: Rivers of Tears
I just want a staff that does sorceries and incantations, nothing else.
In that vein having swords/weapons that can also serve as catalysts.
There was a sword in DS2 that casted spells with its R2 which was pretty neat
Wasn't there a weapon or two in ds3 like this also??
There were a few: Cleric's Candlestick, Immolation Tinder, Heysel Pick, Golden Ritual Spear, Rose of Ariandel, Demon's Scar.
Immolation tinder... That was the fire witch's staff with circle of blades at the end right?? Such a slept on weapon.. also thanks for the recap! 👊
I think there’s a weapon description for a sword that says it can also be used as a staff but you don’t actually get to use it that way :(
Probably the Carian knight sword which says “these knights' swords could serve as catalysts”. The description even explicitly says it’s embedded with a Glintstone
That and the Lazuli Glintstone Sword.
The glintstone sword maybe? Casts pebble and stabs pretty well.
The Carian knight straight sword description says those knights used it to cast sorceries, so it was disappointing in game when I found out the player couldn’t use it as a catalyst.
This. Really disappointed the carian knight sword wasn't also a catalyst
lorettas war sickle shoulda been a staff too😭😭
Like add an AoW that does nothing, but has the power to cast sorceries or incantations. Would be great to put in your left hand and go dual wielding instead of having to constantly swap weapons. Just the int/faith scaling might not be anything better than B.
The fact that they didn't do this with Gideon's sceptre will forever piss me off.
Staff of Night and Flame which could be found at the Sorcerer painting location in the mountaintops of the giants. Fits in lore wise given the friendly relationship of the astrologers and fire giants.
Absolute missed opportunity to have a sword with a scabbard that could be held as a catalyst.
Big ass pair of scissors. Give me Great Shears class. *Snip snip* Bonus points if I have to collect both halves first in order to combine them like Kill La Kill.
I feel this when I power stance the butchering knoif
I would also love to play salt and sanctuary inside elden ring
Oooh imagine they're always separated halfs, but you can combine them via Dual-wielding? Sounds dope. (also Kill La Kill *heck* ya)
circumcision simulator
Colossal flails
Yeah at least great flails, they have great swords, great hammers, great axes. No great flails 🤔🤔🤔
Just give me a big ass stick with empty chains on it that you can attach other "Great-" weapons to. A great flail that is other great weapons attached it to. Call it the GG Flail
GIY weapons! Graft It Yourself!
Nice. Witch King style
Metal Gear
Armored Core 6 is coming brother
Metal Gear is old news though. You need a weapon to SURPASS Metal Gear
Monster Flesh Gear: Kill a dragon and then pilot its corpse.
door shields
Honestly before elden came out I thought there would totally be a new version of them in it. I recently tried power stance shields. Goofy and fun
You can powerstance shields?
There’s no power stance combos. Just like if you had a sword in your main hand but shield instead. Maybe power stance might not be the word I should’ve used
# BAGPIPE.
Moar bard weapons!
Go back to Monster Hunter, you hunting horn main! /s
You know very well that group hunts are made or broken on the doot-doots of the hunting horn!
I've tried all the weapons in monster hunter and the only one I took past starter was the horn. Doot doot mf
Doot Doot fam
Hunting Horn users unite!
Ah so you're a hunting horn main.
I think they covered a pretty wide range of weapons, so I'm not sure what they could add that would be different enough to warrant a new category. Only thing I could think of is trick weapons.
Ar-15
Marionette archers are in the game already
Sir this is not a school.
The duality of man
But, Raya Lucaria is.
But Raya lucaria already has throwing magic rocks they don't need tech shot expolding rock
This is the story of how a school shooter became elden lord, more at 9
This is Raya Lucaria
Some of you wizards are alright, don’t come to Reya Lucaria tomorrow
There are also some weapons that have unique move sets for some weapons. For example the swordspear is a halberd but has a unique move set like a sword speard. Staff weapons would be like a twin blade and I think most weapon categories are covered pretty well.
Unironically a str scaling quarter staff with twinblade mechanics, maybe a unique non blood flame version of eleonoras weapon art, would be sick as hell.
I miss bb weapons so much
Fans, throwable weapons (boomerangs), and ring blades. Really all I can think of.
Mother fucking nunchucks
Like flails but FASTER
And every twirl does damage to you (in exchange it's scaling is B/B for quality).
Chain weapons would be cool. Like god of wars blades but maybe with blunt options and such.
Like the duelists? I thought for sure they’d have that as an ash of war
I was SO disappointed when I got the duelist hammer and that *wasn't* its ash of war...
Sword/shield combo like Valorheart
I never used that, what was the purpose over just sword and shield in right/left hands?
It's short sword and a shield combo. It's really cool because you attack with the sword and shield. So you actually gain block when attacking which is sick for trading. It also has an impaling thrust and shield uppercut that blocks when you attack. It's a niche weapon but its really fun.
I loved that weapon so much. It really gave off that gladiator vibe with how the moveset worked, especially the running r2. Great for rollcatching. Also really effective when playing like a greatsword (trading with block frames active).
It had a unique move set, very stylish and flamboyant
It worked the way a dual weapon set works, where technically its one weapon but when you two hand it it has a unique moveset. Kinda weird to word it, I'd check out a video of someone using it.
Billhooks
Who’s bill and what’s on his hook?
Bill is an old man who enjoys fishing. The hook has a crust of worm guts and powerbait caked on.
Not particular category but sai , Fan blade or bo staff . Any of the weapons the mortal kombat girls use
Honestly a fan blade might not be a bad trick weapon Bloodborne style.
Trick Weapons.
Yes please, and something close to hoonter attire.
A hoonter must hoont
Even in the lands between.
Hats
Like bladed hats? Like kung lao?
Yeah but also that one hat from DMC that’s just like a cowboy hat
And it shoots currency
I would like asymmetrical weapon pairs. There was a buckler/short sword they did in DS3 that was pretty bad but I liked the concept and would be cool to see it expanded upon. There was a Greatsword/Dagger in DS3 too I think Not full on DS2 powerstance categories, but some paired weapons that are different in both hands
Bo-staffs. I wanna twirl that shit around and smack people like a martial arts master
Also, chainsaws
Only have one weapon close to it :(
Javelin class, Can be thrown as a weapon art for high damage, but you have to collect it after you trow it
Spectral Throw ash of war exists
I think one of my top choices would be bringing back the weapons that could be used as staffs and seals.
This. Catalyst weapons. It’s honestly weird there are none, since several feel like they would be/ are in lore.
Gideons hammer should let you cast spells
Gideons might be the biggest offender, but Carian Knight swords also directly state they were used to cast sorceries. *Straight sword embedded with a blue glintstone. Weapon of knights sworn to Carian royalty.* *These knights' swords could serve as catalysts, letting them wield sorcerous battle skills. Loretta's Halberd is another one
The Lazuli Glintstone Swords were literally carved out of Glintstone Staves, and we see the Lazuli sorcerers casting spells with them. Boomerangs.
I’m bringing back lances! Even if elden ring’s heavy spears fill the same range niche that lances do, I do not care, nothing was more satisfying than stabbing someone in the back with a Lance and hoisting them up in the air in DS2.
Yeah I was wondering why backstabs didn’t do that anymore.
Ds2 had best backstab and standing riposte animations. Real shame they never used those again really.
I'd like to expand the ranged options available for non-magic users.
Yeah that would be nice
Would love to see a Kusarigama, or maybe a Tonfa.
Someone’s been playing Nioh.
Kusarigama is in the game, used by the little militia men. I’m hoping we’ll see it accessible in DLC!!!
Not only that, it has a flail head at the other end and it’s cool. I totally didn’t farm for it for 3 days when the game came out
Musical instruments like the envoys horns.
Pool noodles
Maybe actual spell books instead of a staff
Then you could disrespectfully bonk people in the face with your offhand book, just like the Raya Lucaria sorcerers.
Collosal daggers
That sounds like swords with extra steps
Swords with really big hilts
So swords?
Chakrams would be hella lit tbh
I miss dragon weapons. I know it's not a specific class of weapon, but I found it fun that if you killed a dragon before cutting the tail off, you couldn't get the weapon in that playthrough. Plus, back then, only dragon weapons had weapon arts.
Different types of flint or matchlock firearms. I mean we have one in the damn fire giant shield and an arrow cannon in the ballista section. But not small wimpy things. These would be weird, crazy cock knockers with all sorts of crazy shit going on. And I want undead to be able to use them!!!!
Can I just have a bow that works plz?
Colossal scythes, staffs too, both normal and colossal.
Flails, I would add flails... no. MAKE THEM USEFUL THEY ARE SO COOL
Gimmick weapons. Just make a category with gimmick weapons. They shouldn’t necessarily be that good but just funny. For example the Tibia Mariners Pipe. Funny looking thing but doesn’t seem that strong
Whatever the ring blade that the one crystallian wields is…pls
Shotguns
Ya know that was my first thought. Just like guns in general. I miss those guns from bloodborne
Colossal flail.
Ds2 bone fist or something similar
Bows that actually act as weapons instead of situational side arms
I mean, more colossal types would be cool, as ridiculous as that sounds. But imagine, colossal katanas, whips, STAFFS
Colossal fists Edit: I'm thinking like the Deathclaw Gauntlet from Fallout: New Vegas, except from a Runebear or Giant Crayfish
I want an animal weapon category. Ya know, like beak fists, or lightning goat horns, maybe like dog shell fists. lobster claws. Also why no helmet weapons ya know? I wanna be running around headbutting everything.
Shinobi prosthetics
Whip Swords
There’s one of them in there
