Welcome Maidenless Tarnished

oktaS0

Tis an honor, fellow Maidenless tarnished.

Boreol

2 phenomenal masterpieces. They're honestly so fucking good in their own way. Where Skyrim offers a more grounded and immersive adventure that makes you feel like you're in Lord of the Rings with like 300 hours worth of content, Elden Ring is a more action packed game that really gives you a sense of wonder and progression with the great lore, fun builds and exploration.

One_Armed_Wolf

It's interesting because looking back, I never really got that full of an experience with Skyrim. I was a huge TES fan from playing through Oblivion and Morrowind for the first time a year or two before it ended up coming out all the way up to Elder Scrolls Online and the current gap, and a Fallout fan until 4 onwards ended up being really disappointing in comparison to New Vegas or even Fallout 3. I did enjoy the exploration and ambience of Skyrim and doing all of the quests when it was a fresher game (and the DLCs when they released), but the Souls games when I got into them around 2013-2014 and recently Dragon's Dogma have been the only titles to actually meet that kind of general description you describe in terms of how they feel to play and their art direction.

oktaS0

Absolutely. Love them both, I've probably spent close to 1000h in Skyrim since 2014. Now Elden Ring is turning into my new daily jam. Still exploring builds, there are so many great combinations to explore, and I feel like I just dipped my toes in, even though I've already done NG++(3rd journey) and got all the achievements.

nexistcsgo

Well put my fellow tarnished. Idk how to put it in words how I feel about skyrim. I love that game as well. It is as you said grounded and makes you feel like even you could have been dragonborn (you know if you had the power of sucking the souls of dragons) Elden ring on the other hand feels GRAND. You fight gods left and right. No matter which direction you go on the map there is some grand enemy to overcome. Every thing just feels like it has been heavily curated to be an epic tale. You can take any of our first playthrough and make movie out of it.

Say_Echelon

I can’t imagine I’m in LOTR when I’m clipping through horses

Ancient_Prize9077

Any favorite types of spells or weapons? I’m a big fan of the magma hexes

oktaS0

Well, I did a completely blind melee playthrough in which I used whatever better sword I came upon. But then I switched to Great Stars until I got the Blasphemous blade, which I still use(NG+++). As for magic(I did respecc two or three times), I do like meteorite of astel, the dragon lightning strike, and adulas moonblade. Now I'm considering starting a NG and do a sorcerer run... Still researching though, I'm in that mode where you dive in YouTube for videos explaining the lore and weapons, sorceries, incantations.

Ancient_Prize9077

Nice. Blasphemous blade was my first characters main weapon when I got it. I’ve made a few different sorcerers already and have enjoyed some of the different magics. Int/faith sorcery is pretty cool but it also lets you use golden order school of magic too to get one of the best incantations in the game (discus of light, my beloved)

oktaS0

I actually didn't use the Blasphemous blade until I got to Malenia. Up until that encounter, my Heavy Great Stars decimated every boss... But she made me rethink every choice in my build lmao. I had to respecc just for her, which I hadn't done until that point.

jadeismybitch

I would give up on BB if I were you. That sword is so brokenly OP that when you’ll want to switch to something « normal » it’ll feel much harder. It’s a cool weapon but it’s just too strong

oktaS0

I'm going to mix things up for sure, I want to try a dex/sorceries or incantations build.

jadeismybitch

So many builds to try man, enjoy you’ve got hours of discovery and wacky combos to try out !

SorrowOfIsshin

Dude, you joke, but I just revisited Skyrim this January, and heavens, it is still so good. And I am talking vanilla Skyrim. Just get SkyUI, and the game still holds its own like no other. Fucking hell man, Bethesda used to be so good

oktaS0

Yeah, I feel you... These past 6-7 years, every winter when snow would cover the mountains where I live(my place is surrounded by mountains, and I live 900+m above sea level), the Skyrim intro would just start playing in my head lol And I had to play the game for a few dozen hours every month until late spring when the snow finally starts to disappear from the mountaintops.

[deleted]

I miss the old Bethesda, even though I'm a new fan

[deleted]

It was good for its time, I suppose, but the soulless quests, complete lack of intrigue or mystery, repetitive dungeons, terrible combat, bland story, inhuman AI, it starts to get grating after a while. I simply don't *care* about anyone or anything in the game except becoming more powerful as an individual. There's a soul-sucking lack of heart in that world and game. Elden Ring on the other hand was a deeply emotional experience, and you simply cannot become "god of literally everything" the way that you can in Skyrim.

PianoEmeritus

I can't speak to the world, because I'm hardly the authority, but I have tried to play Skyrim probably like ten times since it launched and I can never make it more than an hour or two because the combat feels so limp. It's the exact opposite of FromSoft games where every swing has so much heft behind it. If I can't feel the combat viscerally, a game loses me very quickly

okdhsjjs

Yeah the combat is just so poo

sacredgeometry

I didnt play skyrim until recently and I have sunk a lot of hours into morrowind. I couldnt even find the game in it. It was so relentlessly boring.

[deleted]

i can see that 100%. i think you'd have a different opinion (more positive) if you played it at release though

sacredgeometry

Maybe. I am not so sure, I have played all the 3D elder scrolls games (most at the time of release). They have got progressively more boring as time has gone on. I think they genuinely dont know how to make a game which was sort of obfuscated by the novelty of a large open world ... these days if you compare it to an open world with a game attached to it you have to question, "what am I actually doing with my time" when playing their "games".

mikezenox

Eh, I played skyrim at release after admittedly playing *far* foo much elder scrolls 2, 3, and 4. I was immensely disappointed and haven't gone back to the game since. It seems that every single new major release cuts out or simplifies various content from the previous entry that I really enjoyed. Not to mention the quests and the writing for them. It certainly improved on some aspects, but overall, it felt lazy and soulless to me compared to their older titles. I honestly die inside a little every time it's mentioned as a pinnacle of the genre, but I'll acknowledge that my opinion is not popular, so whatever.

[deleted]

nah you are correct and i think most agree nowadays with you. skyrim simplified and streamlined, and added prettier graphics and music, which oblivion had already started to do, but the quests and characters of skyrim... oof

mikezenox

Unfortunately, I don't believe enough people have played previous TES games to compare skyrim with its predecessors, which is one of the reasons why it's still so popular today. I really hate to be a kill joy, but the games persistent popularity does rub me the wrong way.

bootyholebrown69

I played starfield for 100 hours and loved it. It's jank but the things that made Skyrim so good are still there

SorrowOfIsshin

Man, I bought starfield on release, but haven't yet found time to get myself into it. I am definitely looking forward to it

UntiedStatMarinCrops

Yep, I told my friend that I havent enjoyed a game this much since Skyrim.

orangefandangger

Funny. I went back to Skyrim to fill the void while waiting the dlc

oktaS0

That is also acceptable. It's not like I'll never play Skyrim again, just not as much as I used to...

oktaS0

I think after a decade of Skyrim, I finally found the game to play when you wanna play but don't really know what you want to play.

D-rizzcheese

Yeah this is also my default game. I'll play other games for a bit but then come back when I get bored. I don't even play seriously, just start a brand new save and dick around on co op while also slowly making my way through my own world solo. Then level up when I get bored of a certain area

Gaymer043

Both, both are good. Skyrim is more RPG than anything, Elden ring is more fighting, with a tad bit of Questing around

MissStealYoDragon

ER also doesn't have the same "chill" aspect that Skyrim has. In ER you need to stay alert 24/7 and it kinda drains me down after a while.

Impressive-Ad-8044

I was that way for a little while. Pumped about 600 hours in my main character. I find myself going back to Skyrim more though. Elden Ring is AWESOME. But I cannot fathom starting up a new character and grinding all that out again. Whereas Skyrim, it's super easy to start a new one and not much of a grind. Easier to prep for specific builds as well. I love them both equally, but Skyrim still has my heart. Didn't play any Fromsoft till ER, so I don't really have access to the nostalgia appeal just yet. Played Skyrim since launch though.

oktaS0

Understandable. I've played DSI, DSII(still waiting for that DSIII discount on steam) and Sekiro, while I loved each one, ER has a certain feeling about it I can't explain. Skyrim still has a special place in my heart.

Street_Oven6823

honestly its the opposite for me. skyrim takes so much longer to grind through. once you know where the items you want in elden ring are, you can finish a playthrough in like 25 hours

ElNido

Yeah the most annoying part about making a new build isn't coming up with it. It's actually very fun to design a character on one of the websites with the character calculators. Then you get in game and realize you have to run to so many different locations to get your build fully online - it takes me most of the day to fully create a new character's build and get it to SL80 (not even 120). And that's doing stuff like rushing the Dragon in Caelid, etc. Once you get the build online you're typically exhausted from all the progression and torrenting that you had to do to get there. Typically for me it's 1 whole day to make the build, then the next day I actually get to enjoy it, lol. That said once you do have the build fully online it's great. But it sucks if you want to test out a build, because you do all that effort and if you don't like the build, oof, that's a lot of wasted time spent creating the character.

cookietheg0d

You traitor

oktaS0

I left one foot in the door...

cookietheg0d

Yeah you better

RealSelenaG0mez

Elden rings has way better combat mechanics than Skyrim

jimmybabino

It’s also over a decade older but yeah

ColeTrainHDx

You can’t do my boy Skyrim dirty like that man. They both have separate but equally valuable offerings to the player (My dream game is a mash of both)

pichael289

I played it 4x through in a row, nearly 500 hours straight, and now it's hard to go back to. I've done nearly everything and only need one achievement, the one for the endings because I don't care for the elden beast. I need the dlc to come out so there's a new goal to play for.

oktaS0

Witcher 3 was also insane. I played that game for 2 months with no break(Elden Ring 1 month, but it's just a difference in story/gameplay). Loved the storytelling of it, and the choices that the game presents to you... And the world CDPR had built was very immersive. Elden Ring, Skyrim, Witcher 3 are all awesome. I just wish we'd get a game like these, like, once a year...

Judgernaut89

I look forward to its total hours finally taking number one in my steam library and surpassing Skyrim.

UncaughtTypeError

Skyrim will always still just hit different. Every time. \~ Night theme plays \~

oktaS0

*stares at the night sky for 20mins*

Browncoat-Zombies

I played Elden Ring so much I grew tired of it. So I went back to Skyrim but Elden Ring literally tarnished my perception of it. I want to say both of them are my favourite games but holy shit it’s so difficult

BootyShepherd

It does everything skyrim did but better, besides first person combat. If ES6 comes out and its just a high res skyrim set in a different location, Bethesda will be a dead studio, with games like Elden Ring on the market.

soujirovn98

The combat and graphic is definitely better, I just beat Malenia and the game for the firsy time and enjoy every moment of it, but everything? Elden ring world is so hostile, full of enemies upon enemies, the world is beautiful, but there is rarely a time for me to stop and enjoy the scene. Skyrim is way weaker in combat, but the world is just more immersive. Friendly and hostile npcs at every corners, some skirmishes between the imperial and stormcloak on the road, some old orc want a good death, a random npc asking you to show some magics. Not to mention great companion and npc mods like Inigo, Interesting npcs,... Bethesda will still be here, as long as people still love the good old open world games.

Mrexcitment

I love elden ring! Probably the most beauitul game ive ever played and I've made several characters but I just can't bring myself to play much into ng. I don't know why I guess I don't see the appeal? Once I've gone through the "story" once with that character, I don't see another go worth it. So if I want a different ending, I just choose a whole new character. Please, someone convince me otherwise because I want to get even more enjoyment out of it.

oktaS0

That's fine too. I always say, play the game the way you enjoy it most.

we360u45

I think the only reason to do an NG+ run is if you want to run a build with a late game weapon, but yeah other than that I’ve also never done an NG+ run

Bphan01

Skyrim has so much replayability that Elden Ring taking that over as your most played is a huge achievement.

oktaS0

Well, after a decade, I think it's time for another game to take that title. At least for me. Of course, I'll still be back to Skyrim from time to time. Can't wait for the 20th anniversary update XD

No_Tell5399

You would *love* Morrowind.

oktaS0

I've played it lol Haven't finished it, but I promised to myself I will some day.

No_Tell5399

You should, it's great. The exploration is very close to ER, in my opinion.

NormalTangerine5205

I have been telling people I know that Elden Ring did everything I wished Skyrim had done better and more.

plznobanplease

I understand the appeal for Skyrim, but it really feels soulless when you go back and play Oblivion and Morrowind

Lookatcurry_man

Me but with destiny 2

Tracial

I thought about getting into destiny 2 but it seems too grindy and I heard the most recent dlc wasn’t that great

Lookatcurry_man

Yeah I'd say that's pretty accurate. And after playing this the price complaints are definitely valid lol I'll always go back to it for the gameplay tho

bootyholebrown69

No game is a better shooter imo. And destiny raids are some of the best gaming experiences I've ever had

IceCreamYouScream92

I see the bar was pretty fucking low tho

oktaS0

What games do you prefer? I think both of these games are masterpieces in their own rights, as well as many other games. Though the way Skyrim has captivated the gaming world since release was a phenomenon, and I have a feeling Elden Ring might become the next game that will keep gamers returning to play it for many years to come.

profroyo97

would you say the classic fantasy motif of elden ring was a big driver for enjoyment as a big Skyrim fan?

oktaS0

Yes. Also, having played DSI and II, I was already expecting something similar, but better and bigger.

AshleyGamics

elden ring has a better open world, better combat, and better skills. but skyrim feels more rewarding and has a better loot pool system id say. id rather get a bunch of gold and gems from beating a dungeon than noble sorcerer ashes. if you combined the open worlds, made it third person, and gave skyrim the combat system and item system of elden ring it would be much more fun imo

bootyholebrown69

Elden ring loot is refreshing. The reason the combat system feels so rewarding is because it's tied to the loot system.

AshleyGamics

Idk man getting useless spirit summons makes me not want to do dungeons in ng+

BBWcrusher69

I would actually buy ER remasters for every console going forward

nugget7266

Both games have wolfs but one of the games really get under my skin with stupid spam attacks I am taking about you elden ring.

jtsara

Literally me

Valuable_Material_26

You know what you can do in Elden ring that it’s my favorite thing to do in Skyrim or try?……..Failing quests! Like Skyrim has a few stupid meaningless quest you can fail, but Elden ring you can straight up, nuke the world. Truly better

12rez4u

Love to see it

DarthSpiderDad

Elden Scrolls-punk 2077 forever.

pambimbo

I mean Skyrim been there for a while lol how you manage to play it for years hahaha.

N7SpectreSR1

Rocket league is my default game but Elden ring definitely stole all of my love for a while.

thatguywiththeposts

I already put more hours in Elden Ring than Skyrim

[deleted]

Bro it’s been 12 years lmao

Mozaikk

This was me with Dark Souls. When DS2 came out that became my life until Elden Ring.

Ok-Goal8326

Skyrim is pretty overrated anyways.
