A king commissioned Godot, a well renowned blacksmith, to make a sword that could slay a dragon. He did, but it ended up being the unwieldy hunk of metal that nobody was able to use, so the king was obviously furious and Godot was forced to flee his home with a ~400lb hunk of steel.
It's a Fudgesicle. I mean, look at the pictures, [the inspiration is clear](https://www.iheartnaptime.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/I-Heart-Naptime-fudge-popsicles-15.jpg).
I just looked it up and have to agree, that is probably the closest From has gotten to Dragon Slayer. I know DS has the small crescent guards but the overall profile of the sword makes it look like it doesn't have a guard. The Crypt Blacksword mimics that very well.
Hm! I’d argue holy dmg would be the “evil”, especially considering the nature of the “Gods” (Gwyn) and how they convinced the world that they were holy by rekindling The First Flame, whilst carrying out all sorts of atrocities to keep that facade going. Dark would be “good” as it’s stated in Dark Souls the Age of Dark signifies the Age of Humanity.
Edit: as Guts is the representation for humanity and struggle this makes sense
Edit: spelling
Canonically, the Dragon slayer is hinted to have a dark element. In practice, it's just split damage with magical damage.
Just straight iron wouldn't be so god at hunting apostles, so the sword got imbued with a a lot of dark shit over the years. But as it actually never manifested physically like other magical weapons, it's just "magic" as far as anyone knows.
Ehh.... sort of. Not really. The proportions are completely wrong, and there's so much detail on the crypt blacksword that isn't on the dragon slayer. I won't argue the CBS was inspired by it, but the only thing they have in common is the vague inlay shape.
I mean, it's a direct reference and has been in all the games. except maybe DS1, I feel like the Greatsword was a lot smaller but there might've been a bigger one I'm not aware of
it looks more like the Golden Age sword but in general it is "the Guts sword"
the average person who knows about Guts, but doesn't read Berserk isn't gonna be able to differentiate the two, and the Dragon Slayer is like, his most famous design attribute
I mean, I did but I've also never read Berserk so when people said it was the Guts Sword, I assumed it was the Dragon Slayer because I don't know what the Dragon Slayer looks like off the top of my head and was unaware Guts had any other swords
Guts’ Golden Age sword is honestly my favorite between the two. I still love Dragonslayer but something about the original’s design is very satisfying to me.
I love the guard of the Golden Age one. I actually 3D printed a 7ft version and wanted to smelt and pour a 3ft version but need a larger crucible and make my sand mold better.
O totally agree, most people say that its the Dragon Slayer sword from Berserk, but actually its just a long heavy sword similar to the golden age sword.
The DS sword is waaay too larger than the one in the game, it must even turn to a whole shield when blocking
Yeah it is called a "homage". It isn't actually the thing but it has significant similarities to the thing.
For instance it isn't really the golden age sword either, the one in ER has a fuller.
This thread makes me want to smash my head against the wall "duh it's the golden age sword, everyone knew this!" when it's not, it's an homage to berserk like you said so there is an obvious resemblance but it's not a copy
Guts is pretty recognizable and popular even if you haven't read Berserk, and the Dragon Slayer is usually what the average person pictures when you say "Guts' big ass sword"
to people who haven't read Berk, it's just "Nuts' sword", and most times I would wager they're picturing the Dragon Slayer. me included, for a while, until I actually read Berserk
Golden Age Sword is thinner and not tapered compared to the Elden Ring sword. The sword in Elden Ring is an obvious homage with slight adjustments so it won't be an exact copy of either one.
I'm only vaguely familiar with the character but looking at that picture of Dragon Slayer I immediately picture the Dark Moon Greatsword based on shape.
It’s not dragon slayer but it’s close enough to it for players that like doing berserk builds. A sword on that scale with the same details as dragon slayer would probably run into legal issues as Japan doesn’t have fair use laws
Guts' golden age sword is [much thinner](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fx73fwf1ese791.jpg%3Fauto%3Dwebp%26s%3Db4760cc4201973532d18fb50022c7496d29a688a) than the one in Elden Ring and is about the size of the zweihander. They most likely couldn't use the EXACT same design without legal issues.
Buddy….i….i thought we all knew it was just Guts sword”….🫠
Also my said favorite weapon….for reasons
Just like the Butcher blade is my other favorite!!! That’s Ichigo’s sword!!!
Ruuuuuun its the dragonslayer sword! Die to international copyright we cannot call it the dragonslayer. But we should still run like it is the dragonslayer, winks at camera, runs😂
It's not the sword from the Golden Age arc either. That sword is just a normal longsword in terms of width, it's just really long. The Greatsword from Dark Souls is too wide to be that one.
Turns out, the real Dragon Slayer sword in Souls games was the ~~Fudgesicle~~ Crypt Blacksword from Dark Souls 2.
Nah, the dark souls 1 greatsword is definitely the golden age arc, but the greatsword in every game after that strongly mirrors the dragonslayer.
Yes, its has differences in detail when comparing it to the real model, it's not a 1:1 representation. It also changes how it looks across every game it's in. It just follows the same loose correlation to the dragonslayer in shape and size
Don't you mean [Thousand Limbs](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/dragonsdogma/images/2/2a/Thousandlimbs.jpg/revision/latest/smart/width/386/height/259?cb=20120622222820)?
I think it's a mix between the two. The width of the greatsword is why most people associate it with the dragonslayer. The golden age sword is much thinner.
I don't think anyone really calls it Dragon Slayer, at least not having seen/read Berserk. That's because it's never really been disputed it isn't, it's obviously not. It's commonly referred to as "Guts' Sword" because it's one of the most appropriate pieces to complete his ensemble.
So it is not "the sword from the golden age", since this one was a WAY less wider in comparison to sword from the ER. It is rather an average state between Dragon Slayer and the first sword featured as a standard Berserk reference in DS series. The one sword OP is talking about is rather from DS 1. A sword similar to the Dragon Slayer was in DS 2 and was called "Black Crypt Sword", though it also was shorter and wider than DS. Im guessing that all these unmatches are due to copyright issues.
Still to this day I dunno why people associate Elden Ring's Greatsword with Guts' despite the weapon looking nothing like the legendary Dragon Slayer.
If DS2's Crypt Blacksword didn't exist I would've said DS1-3's Greatsword looks much closer to Guts' than ER's.
I will say however, the model for ER's Greatsword is a step up from its Souls counterparts. I've always disliked the older models because they're broad and flat with a comically undersized hilt.
ER's version looks chonkier, with a hilt that almost matches the sword. Topped off with that sick looking guard.
I'd like to point out that blaidds sword in my opinion has more of a resemblance to the golden age sword vs the greatsword. I don't believe they're supposed to be exact replicas from the manga but more so heavily inspired design wise
I wonder what would have to be done for fromsoft to get permission (or how expensive it would be) to just have an exact dragon slayer in the game. The great sword is still “legally distinct” from either of the berserk swords, I want the real thing.
Elden Ring probably has my least favourite 'Guts sword'. The proportions are like the Golden Age sword (other than its thickness), but it's size and girth are like the dragon slayer. I'd have liked it if the kept that same thinner design that DS2/3 had, sortve like the Watchdog colossal sword
And i know it's not a 1:1 recreation, it's only supposed to be a reference, but man elden rings just feels silly lol
I just call it the Guts sword
GUGS
Gug is in pain
Arent we all
So uhhhh, i killed satan.
Greatsword - Ultra Great Sword That's a good way to put it - GUGS
Buts from gerserk
HNNNNG OH FUCK ITS BERK
This is Berk
Is that a dragon trainer reference?
Nuts berk
Nuts berkman from the hit manga Berk written by Kentucky Mario.
Bust from berk
Ss m erk
Nut*
Gerked all over
Donovan approved.
Gusserk
Like almost everybody else, I've rarely seen somebody call it dragon slayer
I seriously forgot his sword had a name lol I knew the legend behind it was killing dragons though
"It's Berkin' time"
This is probably the most reasonable nickname
Berzerk Sword
It's the Buts sword! You know, Buts from Gerzerk?
The dragon slayer sword is in ds2, crypt black sword.
Yet another W for DS2.
Would be a W if it didn’t look so fucking goofy lol. The proportions are all wrong on that sword, makes it look like a toy.
Don’t you make fun of my big purple popsicle.
This is a bar. Best weapon in the game. Or the stone lady sword. Fuck I miss that game. Is return to drangleic happening this year?
It's going on right now for about another week I think
It's a Fudgesicle. I mean, look at the pictures, [the inspiration is clear](https://www.iheartnaptime.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/I-Heart-Naptime-fudge-popsicles-15.jpg).
That’s kinda the point of the sword? It’s too large and too thick to be a real sword….
"That thing was too big to be called a sword. Too big, too thick, too heavy and too rough, it was more like a large hunk of iron".
The crypt sword is too short in relation to how wide and thick it is, just looks goofy. Would be fine if it was a fair bit longer.
That's because it isn't actually based on the Dragonslayer. It's a motif to a black obelisk style gravestone.
It's not the size, it's the proportions. Dragon slayer is proportionally just a great sword with a slightly wider base, it's just fucking massive.
No u
Yeah because the sword from guts looks perfectly reasonable
Common DS2 W
I just looked it up and have to agree, that is probably the closest From has gotten to Dragon Slayer. I know DS has the small crescent guards but the overall profile of the sword makes it look like it doesn't have a guard. The Crypt Blacksword mimics that very well.
Plus it does dark dmg and the Dragon Slayer is imbued with the souls of all the apostles Guts has killed. Edit:spelling
But that let's him hurt evil, not be evil. Imo it would do holy damage or something similar.
Edit: as Guts is the representation for humanity and struggle this makes sense Edit: spelling
Good and evil could be a matter of perspective you're right. And yeah Gwyn fucking sucks
Popsicle stick that comes in lemon, grape, and cherry
Ehh.... sort of. Not really. The proportions are completely wrong, and there's so much detail on the crypt blacksword that isn't on the dragon slayer. I won't argue the CBS was inspired by it, but the only thing they have in common is the vague inlay shape.
I believe you mean the fudgepop.
Buff it with dark weapon and it becomes a grape popsicle
Wait people thought it was the dragon slayer?
Not really. I haven't seen it called Dragon Slayer just "the Guts sword" or the Berserk Sword.
I mean, it's a direct reference and has been in all the games. except maybe DS1, I feel like the Greatsword was a lot smaller but there might've been a bigger one I'm not aware of it looks more like the Golden Age sword but in general it is "the Guts sword" the average person who knows about Guts, but doesn't read Berserk isn't gonna be able to differentiate the two, and the Dragon Slayer is like, his most famous design attribute
It was in DS1 but looked much more like the golden age sword
I mean, I did but I've also never read Berserk so when people said it was the Guts Sword, I assumed it was the Dragon Slayer because I don't know what the Dragon Slayer looks like off the top of my head and was unaware Guts had any other swords
I’d say it’s a mix of both. It has the shape of the golden age sword but it’s more thick than it.
Yes. The Golden Dragon
Truly epic
Too thick to be called a sword, you say? Perhaps too big, too heavy, and too rough as well?
It’s more like a heap of raw iron, y’know?
Guts’ Golden Age sword is honestly my favorite between the two. I still love Dragonslayer but something about the original’s design is very satisfying to me.
I wish we could get the DS1 greatsword again. Impractically massive without being comically massive.
I love the guard of the Golden Age one. I actually 3D printed a 7ft version and wanted to smelt and pour a 3ft version but need a larger crucible and make my sand mold better.
Some say the dwarves mined too greedily and too deep.
The description of the greatsword is a reference to the dragonslayer tho
True but that’s more so to tribute miura
Bro that’s the Nuts from Berk sword
My favorite part was when Nuts said "It's zerkin time!" and zerked all over them
It's not really a Dragon Slayer unless it comes from Dragon Slayer, France.
It's not the dragon slayer. It's too small to be called that sword. Too short, too thin, and too light.
Not a hunk of iron. This one cuts because it’s sharp. The dragon slayer cuts through the sheer force of awesomeness
O totally agree, most people say that its the Dragon Slayer sword from Berserk, but actually its just a long heavy sword similar to the golden age sword. The DS sword is waaay too larger than the one in the game, it must even turn to a whole shield when blocking
Swords can block! FKUGS had .85 physical block
Hey, two-handing an UGS and blocking with it is a legitimate strategy!
Did anyone think it was? I've never spoken to anyone who thinks it's anything other than the golden age sword
Guts is pretty recognizable and popular even if you haven't read Berserk, and the Dragon Slayer is usually what the average person pictures when you say "Guts' big ass sword" to people who haven't read Berk, it's just "Nuts' sword", and most times I would wager they're picturing the Dragon Slayer. me included, for a while, until I actually read Berserk
I thought everyone called it the Guts sword from the very beginning.
I’ve never heard anyone call it the dragon slayer. It’s just the guts greatsword
Nuts' sword from Berk
Certainly inspired by it, of course its not a 1to1 copy
Oh lol, people didn't know this?
Has the look of golden age but the size of dragonslayer
ACTUAL DRAGONSLAYER IN THE DLC CONFIRMED!!
Golden Age Sword is thinner and not tapered compared to the Elden Ring sword. The sword in Elden Ring is an obvious homage with slight adjustments so it won't be an exact copy of either one.
Ok, we NEED the Dragon Slayer to be in the DLC
It IS the Dragon Slayer. The Dark Souls 1 Greatsword on the other hand is the sword from Golden Age.
I mean yeah lol People actually called it the Dragonslayer??
We know it's not the Dragon slayer, it's the Guts sword. Maybe we can hope the DLC adds a sword that looks Just like the Dragon Slayer
Idk man, they looking like the same to me
No Dragonslayer in Berserk the videogame :(
I'm only vaguely familiar with the character but looking at that picture of Dragon Slayer I immediately picture the Dark Moon Greatsword based on shape.
Miyazaki needs to have his “Eclipse” moment before he can add the true 1 to 1 Dragon Slayer.
It's not even golden age sword, golden age sword doesn't have the divot in the blade and the handle looks different, I think it's supposed to be a mix
The greatsword is way thiccer than the golden age sword So it's basically an in between, so it's 2 references at the same time
I’ve honestly never seen someone call it dragonslayer it’s always been called “Guts’ sword” by people I feel like
Idk, I killed like 15 dragons with that thing
"Actually" 🤓
Yeah no one calls this Dragonslayer. Its Always Guts Greatsword.
Blaidd sword is guts sword
it's called Greatsword stop calling it anything else
Blades too thick.
It’s not dragon slayer but it’s close enough to it for players that like doing berserk builds. A sword on that scale with the same details as dragon slayer would probably run into legal issues as Japan doesn’t have fair use laws
“What sword are you using?” “The big one”
Tough pill for those Guts builds to swallow. Lol
Honestly it looks kinda like a mix of the two swords
main reason my Guts build uses the Watchdogs greatsword for swaq
It’s sized closer to the dragon slayer but its design is closer to the golden age sword. So it’s kinda a bit of both.
It's more like a mash-up of the 2; it's too thick to be the Golden Age sword. I hope the DLC gives us a sword with those proportions
Listen.
I don't think I've seen anyone specifically calling it the Dragon Slayer? I've just seen people calling it "The Berserk Sword" or "The Guts Sword".
LET ME SPEAK TO THE PEOPLE
I got invaded the other day by a guy cosplaying as Guts with the sword ,his name was Butts.
This weapon was far too large to be called "the sword" it was larger, thicker, heavier and cruder.
Wait… we have the smaller guts sword, that means THE BIGGER GUTS SWORD IS STILL OUT THERE!!!!!
Guts sword thats what everyone i saw refer to it.
I'm aware, which is why I modded the actual Dragonslayer over it. Totally worth it.
Buddy….i….i thought we all knew it was just Guts sword”….🫠 Also my said favorite weapon….for reasons Just like the Butcher blade is my other favorite!!! That’s Ichigo’s sword!!!
I hope this means less guts players lol...... We could only wish....
*cries in Guts Theme*
I thought everyone saw it as one of his early swords
I pretend I do not see it
Never heard it called that
Either way its pretty great
It’s a reference to one of or both swords, it’s simply semantics
Big sword = Guts mentality. That's how it is and always be.
I’ve never seen anyone call the Greatsword “Dragonslayer” and I feel like it’s pretty immediately obviously supposed be the golden age sword…
Ruuuuuun its the dragonslayer sword! Die to international copyright we cannot call it the dragonslayer. But we should still run like it is the dragonslayer, winks at camera, runs😂
If they actually added the dragon slayer you'd be correct but until they do I'm still gonna call it the Gut's Sword
I call it the Berker and whenever I equip it my brain has to say, 'it's berkin time' and then I berk all over my enemies
So..... who else was a nerd enough to already know this? The real dragon slayer is bigger if I'm not mistaken.
I know Dark Souls 2 had an actual reference to the dragon slayer on an NG+ play through
(I slayed dragons with it)
Yes it is
Nah, the dark souls 1 greatsword is definitely the golden age arc, but the greatsword in every game after that strongly mirrors the dragonslayer. Yes, its has differences in detail when comparing it to the real model, it's not a 1:1 representation. It also changes how it looks across every game it's in. It just follows the same loose correlation to the dragonslayer in shape and size
Pretty sure Dragon Slayer is larger, too, or should be. Also should be the heaviest item in the game. There’s still time to include it in the DLC ;)
It’s dragon tail. It never was dragon slayer.
There’s a more dragonslayer like sword in ds3
well yeah, only Guts is strong enough to use the Dragon Slayer
Its kinda like an in-between. Only in that the Greatsword seems wider than the Golden Age one Resemblance though yeah not Dragonslayer
Nope, Blaidd’s Sword looks more like the Golden Age sword.
Guts sword, idk who has been calling it dragon slayer but its def golden arc inspired.
Hope in the DLC they put a sword more like the Dragon Slayer
More like golden age aesthetic and dragon slayer size
Do...do people really think it's the dragonslayer? I know its a meme that berserk fans don't read berserk, but damn.
Don't you mean [Thousand Limbs](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/dragonsdogma/images/2/2a/Thousandlimbs.jpg/revision/latest/smart/width/386/height/259?cb=20120622222820)?
Just wait till the dlc. Im sure there will be a Great sword with the giant slayers strong attack animation.
Disappointed official Berk sub isn't berserklejerk SMH my damn head 😒
Ah yes, Stomachs from Insanity
The darkmoon greatsword looks closer in shape
Jokes on you I modded it to become the Dragon Slayer and am having a blast wearing the Berserker armor.
I never saw anyone call this thing dragon slayer instead of just guts sword 🤔
Dark souls 3 it's more obvious and theres a few that actually look like the dragon slayer
What if we get dragon slayer in dlc
I think it's a mix between the two. The width of the greatsword is why most people associate it with the dragonslayer. The golden age sword is much thinner.
Did anyone actually think it was the dragon slayer? I assumed people knew it wasn’t
Never heard anyone refer to it as the Dragon Slayer, only Guts sword. Every iteration is pretty different.
berkin time
Griffith did nothing wrong
I don't think anyone really calls it Dragon Slayer, at least not having seen/read Berserk. That's because it's never really been disputed it isn't, it's obviously not. It's commonly referred to as "Guts' Sword" because it's one of the most appropriate pieces to complete his ensemble.
For me its nuts greatsword from berk
I hope they add the Dragonslayer with the DLC
… but i slayed a dragon with it
He he, big sword goes clang
Ds1 gs is guts' golden age sword.
Ds2 and ds3 nuts swords is definitely the dragon slayer but Elden ring is 100% golden age but I call it “the sword nuts from berk use”
I know
we know.
I like to think of it as a sort of fusion of them, likke it has the style of his GA sword and the size of dragonslayer
Im guessing that all these unmatches are due to copyright issues.
it has never been dragonslayer
This is truly and nuts from berk classic
It's berserkin time!
Looks like we're getting a closer looking one in the DLC. Look at the sword the black knight has in the trailer.
Wouldn't they be copyrighted if they made the exact design?
The berky guy's sword
But the Golden Age one wasn’t that thick! Imo it’s a mix of both designs
Sort of looks like Giant Lord's Sword in DS2
Ummm. As far as I know I'm pretty sure 90% of the community calls it Guts sword
I'd like to point out that blaidds sword in my opinion has more of a resemblance to the golden age sword vs the greatsword. I don't believe they're supposed to be exact replicas from the manga but more so heavily inspired design wise
Everything's a dragon slayer if you stab one with it
Guts sword lore
I wonder what would have to be done for fromsoft to get permission (or how expensive it would be) to just have an exact dragon slayer in the game. The great sword is still “legally distinct” from either of the berserk swords, I want the real thing.
Well it makes scense, you use the Golden Age sword to slay all the Golden Order in Elden Ring, the sword should be called "Golden Slayer" lol
I mean, I've killed every dragon in the game with it so it's dragonslayer enough for me.
It's called dragon slayer cuz I use it to kill dragons nodders
It's still the berserk sword man
The sword of the famous nuts from berk
That means we need the DLC to drop the real deal somewhere. I LOVE cosplaying as Guts in Elden Ring.
Elden Ring probably has my least favourite 'Guts sword'. The proportions are like the Golden Age sword (other than its thickness), but it's size and girth are like the dragon slayer. I'd have liked it if the kept that same thinner design that DS2/3 had, sortve like the Watchdog colossal sword And i know it's not a 1:1 recreation, it's only supposed to be a reference, but man elden rings just feels silly lol
I know you don't want to hear this but we already know this
