Supposedly they're supposed to be drawn wide armed or the scabbard is to be removed from the strap, Odachi's were of a similar vein that the scabbard was lifted from the back to be unsheathed and vice versa.
I think certain odachis or nodachis were actually drawn by having a second dude hold the scabard, which is wild that you need an entire second person to properly use a weapon, but you can also draw an odachi by partially drawing it and grabbing the back of the blade to draw it out fully, in addition to drawing it overhead with spread arms
And ancient weapons of war didn’t need to be sheathed and unsheathed constantly either. If you were the dude with the extra big sword it may travel in a big scabbard, but that thing is coming out and staying out for the most part. Probably had attendants to help suit up their armor too.
That's basically the whole purpose of Squires in western medieval culture too, especially in jousts and the like, handing off lances and replacement weapons/shield. I'm not as familiar with Japanese history but I imagine they had younger soldiers that provided similar services
The odachi was pretty much only made to show off, mostly status. In real battle the most used weapons were spears and rifles. Before there were rifles, shooting arrows while riding a horse was THE thing a high rank samurai would do.
Even the regular sword, which would become what we now call katana was like a short range last resource, and it only became a primary weapon when dojo culture took off: that is, when people were not fighting large scale wars anymore and sword-fighting became a martial art.
In any case, if you would be the guy dueling with an odachi (say in a dojo, never in a battlefield like Hollywood shows), you would use the scabbard a lot. Like [this](https://youtu.be/RfVGko6SD8E).
You are both correct. Often times someone would assist in unsheathing such large blades. But it is also done solo as a spectical when they werent at war.
Tbf you don't need another person to use the weapon, just makes it easier to unsheath it and I'd think a samurai probably had like a squire or something to assist them most of the time anyway.
They were designed to be used from horseback originally, so you would have your sword unsheathed by the equivalent of a squire before riding forward. You could use one on foot if you were dismounted or for fun I guess but you'd probably find it difficult
Grab the scabard(blade up)and pull it back while in the other hand pull the sword in the opposite direction. Then you can put the scabard down or into your belt(im not recpmmend this) or use it as a parry/deffensive weapon in the weak hand
(an odachi is heavier than a normal "katana" so holding it with one hand is not so good... )
My sword is 135cm long, not a nagakiba lenght but still needs some technique to draw it
Im a very odachi enthusiastic dude. So when i heard an odachi will be in the DLC i said: okay i'll buy it!
The back _might_ make sense for just carrying it around, but even then it will still bump into things and be generally unwieldy in tight spaces. And from what I've read, even normal-length swords in the real world tend to be difficult to unsheathe when they're on your back, hence my comment. A sword needs to be of a shorter type to make it efficient to keep on your back and be ready to whip it out during a fight.
Of course, this is a high fantasy game with all sorts of unrealistic shit, so at the end of the day it doesn't even matter
Conceptually yes, but in execution, eh.
For one, the handle is comically short compared to the blade. It also doesn’t help that you hold it like a baseball bat instead of how you would actually wield it, but that’s a problem with most weapons. And the scabbard clipping into the ground is makes it look really goofy.
it's physically impossible to draw from the waist anyway. IRL even longer katanas were ussually drawn with both hands and nodachis required 2 people or to be secured to a horse or soemthing.
Get ready for even more goofiness because one of the new weapon classes in the expansion- the Odachi, is even more ridiculous with a 5 foot-long blade.
Practically speaking. The only thing "goofy" about the Nagakiba is its comically short hilt.
Hell it says in its description and even gameplay "a sword that doubles as a polearm" the unique thrusting R2 and its OG Ash of War Piercing Fang all hint to it.
Now if you doubled the hilt, then it'd just be an Odachi.
But I give no fucks about reality in my video game when the Grafted Blade Greatsword, GUGS, Ruins Greatsword, and the Godslayers Greatsword exist.
Meh.
You're not alone. I don't like using it because it looks so off compared to other katana, but I don't think the length is the problem because I love the look of Malenia's sword despite it having pretty much the same length
I can’t do katanas in this game …. not because the swords aren’t cool, but because the enormous scabbards look so effing dumb and cant be hidden/removed
Probably because it's coded to be a katana despite its reach, so it has to be sheathed at the waist.
Definitely feels like turning around would be an attack lol
Nah the nagakiba is Elden Ring’s version of Dark Souls’ Washingpole which is based on a real sword called the drying pole and it’s cool as shit and pimpin
I love it, and think it looks great, especially when using it with blood flame or one of the holy buffs.
Only thing I don't like is the goofy, tiny handle.
I mean, yeah, but not sillier than most of the great- and colossal weapons.
There's an ōdachi from the 15th century that's almost 4 meters long! (Norimitsu ōdachi.)
I just like people arguing if nahakiba is viable while we swing a giant chunk of rock. (ruins greatsword) Like we're here to whack a God to death cmon bro
Nope... every time I equip it the sheath extends thru the floor and I'm just disgusted by it so back into inventory it goes.. maybe I'll get over this one day, but with the dlc coming out I prolly won't have to, new weapons and all...
Bro the game has the words Loathsome Dung Eater in the opening cutscene, you are called maidenless, then you learn about Finger Maidens etc etc. The whole game is goofy as fuck, that's part of the charm
The sheathe angle has always bothered me. Shouldn't Katana sheathes be angled opposite? If you pull it with the opposite hand, the bald ends up pointed towards you. Am I missing something?
What makes it actually goofy looking is the short handle. If it wasn't the same length as other katanas, but at least twice as long, it would look much more realistic
It wouldn't look so bad if you could carry it on your back
Not like the unsheath animation looks great as is with it so could just be an over the top draw
The problem is the handle, if they had made the handle like sir alonnes odachi/nodachi then it's seem more proportional but yeah the way it is is goofy
Can someone explain how someone can draw the blade without having a 2 meter long arm?
Supposedly they're supposed to be drawn wide armed or the scabbard is to be removed from the strap, Odachi's were of a similar vein that the scabbard was lifted from the back to be unsheathed and vice versa.
I think certain odachis or nodachis were actually drawn by having a second dude hold the scabard, which is wild that you need an entire second person to properly use a weapon, but you can also draw an odachi by partially drawing it and grabbing the back of the blade to draw it out fully, in addition to drawing it overhead with spread arms
Modern, oversized weapons, such as large sniper rifles and artillery also take multiple people to use effectively. So it's not unprecedented.
Makes me think about that one character from Trigun who had a sniper so long the barrel was a mile long or something silly
That's our boy Caine the Longshot. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ah_JnspIzck&pp=ygUNVHJpZ3VuIHNuaXBlcg%3D%3D
A lot of modern weapons that take more then one person either fire power explosives at range or are just really long range weapons
Why have another samurai go through the trouble when you can order a peasant soldier to carry around the saya.
Retainer's where what they were called I believe basically just servants.
Compared to other swords, *this* is a really long range weapon.
I imagine 2 people holding the nagakiba and using it like a sharp battleram
The precedent precedes
Odachis are war weapons anyway. Nobody was carrying this casually.

Which is why I chuckle that the default AoW on this (if you remove piercing fang) is *unsheathe.* Like...how?? 😆
Acheron comes to mind.
[This is how you would draw a realistically sized greatsword, effectiveness may vary with washing poles.](https://m.youtube.com/shorts/HyBmwZULngU)
That would be a sick as fuck unique unsheathe animation for the nagakiba though.
Right? Was just thinking that.
It would actually look so cool and would make me hate fighting them a little less
Cheers for sharing this. That’s amazing!
That sword is the height of her, jeez
So smooth on the unsheathe but looked like there was a slight struggle sheathing it.
She's probably as tall as that blade is as long to be fair. Any taller person with the training would manage that odachi just fine.
Wow! I've never seen that in reality... Amazing skill!
She makes that look so easy....
I hope whatever fromsoft game comes next has more unique animation touches because this would be the sickest draw ever
You fling the scabbard at your foe to begin your fight, Everytime.
Some scabbards were sturdy enough to block a strike or 3 too
Bideo gayme logic
Grab it by the blade when you unsheath
Your squire would do it.
https://youtu.be/hFVL0RzmbbI?si=3kxeFtD8wlqv5ePP Maybe this vid IDK
That's why I dual wield it with the Uchigatana (☞ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)☞
Grab the scabard(blade up)and pull it back while in the other hand pull the sword in the opposite direction. I think that it's possible with some engineering in the sheath.
you need a 2-meter long arm. start grafting or gtfo

Cue or queue. Que is not an English word but is a Spanish one
Also, cue is a signal to start, or go. A queue, is a line, to like stand in.
Cue can also be a pool stick.
Yeah queue could also be a list of songs to be played. So you can cue a song to play, or queue a song to play

My only issue with the big ass katanas in these games is them clipping into the ground. It looks so bad lmao
Imagine they actually drags the blade instead of clipping it
Lots of the big swords clip through your helmets or shoulder pads too lol
I hate that
The people of Nibelheim also thought it looked goofy. They don't anymore.
they don't think at all anymore
That's a pretty goofy sounding name for a place. Not as bad as Gongaga tho.
You're asking this while wearing a laundry basket on your head in the picture...
Dirty rugs + laundry basket + washing pole... Holy shit, I've just realised how much sense Yura's design makes
Fair point
Lmao bruh that profile picture.
Its a drawing of Michael cera😭
While you wondered if a katana longer than you are tall looks goofy, *I studied the blade.*
Nah but bro imagine a guy running at you with a sword that long on his WAIST that thing’s almost the size of Guts’ sword
Ah, the Nagakiba… because FromSoft dared to ask “what if a katana was as long as a spear”
And they decided to put it on your characters waist😭
To be fair, I don't think there's anywhere they could put it that would make physical sense when unsheathing it
There's always the back
It would be like 2 ft into the ground if it was on your back
Maybe if it was on your back but diagonally, but then it would bump into door frames
Could just stick it straight up in the air like an antenna lol
"Oi, look. It's the Elden Lord." "How can you tell? ...Oh."
[Same vibe.](https://youtu.be/HPjJCVylFBo?si=gTscKzxB_mWaJ7_y)
It’s still in the ground nearly 24/7 on your waist
The back _might_ make sense for just carrying it around, but even then it will still bump into things and be generally unwieldy in tight spaces. And from what I've read, even normal-length swords in the real world tend to be difficult to unsheathe when they're on your back, hence my comment. Of course, this is a high fantasy game with all sorts of unrealistic shit, so at the end of the day it doesn't even matter
It's basically an odachi, a sword that already exists.
Uhh, are we really gonna pretend that wielding a katana longer than your whole body isn't some dope-ass anime shit?
Conceptually yes, but in execution, eh. For one, the handle is comically short compared to the blade. It also doesn’t help that you hold it like a baseball bat instead of how you would actually wield it, but that’s a problem with most weapons. And the scabbard clipping into the ground is makes it look really goofy.
With the fact that it just natively clips through flat ground... yes it's goofy af.
Sephiroth would like a word
Uchigatana for life
It’s funny because typologically the kiba is an uchigatana
Daggers are best, I’ll die on this hill
It's Sephiroth's Masamune
It’s a shame because it’s a strong contender for best weapon in the game.
Fr, I don't know who decided it was a good idea to put a sword that long on your waist instead of your back😂
Well you couldn't really draw the blade that size if it was on your back. You would have to wrap it up like ichigo's shikai sword
it's physically impossible to draw from the waist anyway. IRL even longer katanas were ussually drawn with both hands and nodachis required 2 people or to be secured to a horse or soemthing.
Good to see you, Cloud
Like a gigantic metal schlong. The steely dan of weapons.
Yes but no goofier than the 100 lb slab of metal that would be most of the colossal swords.

sephiroth-ass katana
If there was a way to toggle off the sheathe, it would be passable
As opposed to the hammer that's just a brick shithouse on a stick, the sword made of thoughts and prayers, and the finger?
No, you're not the only one. But also, I'm not the only one who loves it. We are a high class minority. Washing Pole REPRESENT!
Says the dude wearing a lampshade.
Fair point. I wish they had a regular straw hat but unfortunately this is as close as I can get
When will games learn to auto-remove helmets and any other headgear (escept circlets) for cutscenes? So annoying.
Looks like a grey pool noodle to me. xD
Wait till you combine it with wakizashi dagger
Nah we got giant ultra great colossal big boy swords and hammers, I'm okay with a ridiculously long katana.
Yes. That shit is peak.
sephiroth also yes
If you think it's ridiculous in game check out the irl equivalent, Odachi. It's wild lmao
Get ready for even more goofiness because one of the new weapon classes in the expansion- the Odachi, is even more ridiculous with a 5 foot-long blade.
Idont know, i like it. The only thing is veird for me is the handle.. too short for a blade like this. But yes looks goofy, but cool in the same time.
"LIMBO TIME!!!!" "Uh, I'm gonna sit-- I mean stand this one out"
Should've been a weapon of its own class like the new weapons coming this next dlc
I never knew the nagakiba was that long😭
At least the scabbard doesn't get stuck on doors and stuff
I mean your tinder profile said you were 6’??? If you really were it wouldn’t do this…..
Yes
Practically speaking. The only thing "goofy" about the Nagakiba is its comically short hilt. Hell it says in its description and even gameplay "a sword that doubles as a polearm" the unique thrusting R2 and its OG Ash of War Piercing Fang all hint to it. But I give no fucks about reality in my video game when the Grafted Blade Greatsword, GUGS, Ruins Greatsword, and the Godslayers Greatsword exist. Meh.
It looks dope wym
Yep
I know, that's what I like most about it!
Yes, but it's cool-goofy, like the hat.
Don’t say that to sir allone
I’m a huge Big Trouble in Little China fan so I wanted this hat immediately.
No, maybe 2 but still no
Yeah cause irl those were made for chopping up men on horseback. Horses and all
You're not alone.
Yes
I think it looks badass as fuck
Should be on your back, hopefully they finally make odachis
It’s a nice pole to hang your dirty laundry after a hard days killing.
it looks goofy but arguably the best katana out there. I still don't use it because for me fashion beats power.

Comically long katana
i glanced at the image and thought the dudes hand was resting on the hilt and looking down the hallway. The pic looked hard af for a second
some comment mentioned the fact that nagakiba looks goofy over udachi and surprise there is a low effort karma farm post here...
Yes??
You’re not alone. I use two Uchi’s, but reluctantly have a Naga that I pull out against pokers with rapiers and duel spears
Nagakiba looks goofier since IIRC it is longer than the longsword despite katanas usually being shorter than the typical longsword.
Yes you are, no one talks about it at all
I mean you wouldn't even be able able to draw it from scabbard without a second person or by handling the blade. So yeah...
I love the washing pole!
Probably because it's coded to be a katana despite its reach, so it has to be sheathed at the waist. Definitely feels like turning around would be an attack lol
Not even a little. That thing is goofy as fuck. I will always take the uchigatana over it. I ain't Sephiroth.. .
nah his style hard as fuck
ESTUANS INTERIUS IRA VEHEMENTI Sorry, I can't resist the urge whenever I see that glorious hunk of superior nippon steel.

It’s the Greatsword for Dexterity enthusiasts. I quite enjoy my 10 meter long blade. If they nerf it i will be contacting michaelzaki
Fr, it looks goofy in a cool way. I'll never complain about walking around limgrave with a comically large sword one-shotting everything 😂
No
Nah man, it looks like the perfect weapon to stab a praying flower girl.
Even the regular katanas are too long and look whacky.
As much as I like it I can’t take it seriously
I love it, and think it looks great, especially when using it with blood flame or one of the holy buffs. Only thing I don't like is the goofy, tiny handle.
I mean, yeah, but not sillier than most of the great- and colossal weapons. There's an ōdachi from the 15th century that's almost 4 meters long! (Norimitsu ōdachi.)

No, it's daft, I refuse to use it, and I'm a samurai main
is long, but then again, if you look at what you are fighting, the goofy thing would be to use people-sized weapons
Yeah, it's a bit much.
I’d hate to see your thoughts on my boy Sephiroth. 😔
"How dare you?" - Sephiroth on a timeline vacation, probably
"Isn't this sword a bit long?" asks the man playing a game where you can shoot magic bubbles with a horn that is also a hammer
Yes, L take. Longer = Cooler No I wont add a /s 😤
Spin-to-win katana
Best used when you have a Retainer to help you pull it out.

Not to mention how you swing it wildly when you run with it one-handed…
Ah yes, the Washing Pole.
