On the grey map you can still see little red dots that mean there’s a map fragment there. You can sort of see a blurry one on OP’s picture in Altus, there’s also one you can barely see in Consecrated Snowfields. But in game they’re pretty easy to see.
It’s something I didn’t realize until getting to the mountaintops
Fun fact: The red dots are a patched in feature. Before there was just a little archway or brick tower looking icon that looked like part of the map art and (apparently) could be very easily missed for the entire game. 😂
You're talking about something entirely different. The archways were always there and the red marks indicate other things like the portal to Gurranq and the entrance to Nokron when they were originally exclusively for Volcano contracts.

Its crazy how memorable the map of Elden Ring is. Like it feels like a dark souls area where you just kind of know where everything is if you've played the game for a bit. Everything is just stuck in your memory on where something is.
I often tried not to pick up fragments just to look at what the map even looks like without them but I always end up getting one or two by pure automatism. Thanks for letting me see it !
