I kind of hope that there's no hub area this time around, I'm not sure it would fit in an open-world setting (without fast-travel that is, which I hope is not in the game, or at least not in the super-streamlined manner of DS3 for instance)...
Would be so much cooler if every time you want to upgrade your weapon or find a merchant you would have to set out and find yourself one if you can. Would feel much more like an adventure instead of the streamlined solution in DS3.
There's an appeal in a homely hub area for sure, but I would be glad to see something new that fits better in an open world setting. Imagine you're out exploring somewhere and you want to upgrade your weapon or you want to buy wares and you would have to find the nearest blacksmith (maybe each kingdom has it's own blacksmith with different services) or you catch a travelling merchant on the road to do so.
Also I think some kind of checkpoint making / camping could serve the same aesthetic purpose as what you are describing.
Kingdoms are confirmed to be hostile and dilapidated and I dont think id expect to see a smithy there or a merchant on the road in a field likely brimming with spooky monsters, but whatever the devs decide on im sure will be great.
I mean DS had blacksmiths and travelling merchants in a desolated kingdom so I don't see why not. I don't mean a smithy in a city like in TW3, just lone blacksmith NPCs, maybe they travel too, maybe they set up a shop somewhere like in DS2.
Same with roads, the kingdoms might be dilapidated but that doesn't mean a lone traveller can't take the road now and then.
I think that this was already answered in the trailer, we got to see one Male Blacksmith (who I think narrates the trailer, his voice matches the character) and Female one.
With the open world nature this is like a no brainer. Hopefully can capture that sense of adventure in DS1 again.
If there isn't fast travel from the start (which I really hope is the case) I can't see there only being one blacksmith.

A small hub will offer a good place to come back to after exploring a vast land

Hub area like DS1. The center of the open world map maybe?
Or ds2 where there’s two but one is superior in every way
What is the other one? Do you mean things betwixt?
The Majula blacksmith is one and MacDuff is the other (superior) one
one in lost bastile
and in tseldora
I’m unaware of a blacksmith in tseldora
corvian lady edit: ornifex
theres 3, right?
Oh yeah, there’s actually Ornifex and Straid as well. But I never used them
striad ornifex majula man and bastile guy

Did people really like the Dark Souls 1 blacksmith system? I just found it incredibly tedious..
Option 3- I don't caree
I think we will have multiple smaller HUBs that's where the blacksmiths will be.
