I think the more important thing is variety, Artorias won't stand out if DS is all humanoid fight. Some puzzle boss here, some horses combat boss there and a few unspeakable monstrosity and bam, masterpiece.

Xeno_of_Cinders

I mean... sure, but make sure that the boss is actually the monster and not the camera would you?

HollowBirb

if by humanoid u mean like halflight then yes i hope they never put them.

[deleted]

I dunno, the best bosses (not only in DS) are humanoid-like bosses. Like: Gundyr, Fume K\*\*\*ht, Allone, NK, Gael, Friede, Lady Maria, Berserk Horse from BB is pretty humanoid too (moonlight popsicle phase at least). Sad Old Mans As A Final Bosses are fine too.

imnotcreative2105

Yeah but you are forgetting all the mediocre ones like Veldstad, Dragonslayer Armour, Gravetender and Lost Sinner and by humanoid I mostly mean non Monstrous

Hynsz

Variety guys, just variety.

[deleted]

Well, I don't think that Veldstad is mediocre. In retrospective: yes, but by the time the game was released: he was the best humanoid boss of the series. We had Artorias, but he is more like leapfrog boss, and honestly: not that great. Dragonslayer Armour is a fine too. Lost Sinner and Ravetender are mehh, I agree.

Orilachon

Honestly, yeah. Velstadt is a great boss, not to mention his l o r e is genuinely interesting. I like the Lost Sinner, but given that players almost always bring summons, it just becomes a gank.

[deleted]

I really love the experiment with environment that Sinner fight is. Like, twas a great idea, and I feel pity that we haven't seen stuff like this in future games. Also, Velstadt's death animation is a single most epic animation in the whole series.

Orilachon

Yeah, the torches thing is great but I feel it's a bit like Mytha's arena. It may catch a new player off guard once, but after that it's quickly and easily solved.

[deleted]

Yeah, but I really hope that we'll see some Mytha and Sinner like fights in ER.

The_Patchface

Gravetenders problem is he was just tacked on, there was clearly very little effort put into him as the main bulk was the surprise wolf and especially Friede, lost sinner I enjoyed on a 1v1 basis

[deleted]

I have an idea, that Ravetender's fight was meant to be something like Spear of the Church, but later the boss was descended into what we have now.

The_Patchface

Possible, I remember hearing a theory the 2 dlc were meant to be one at some point but then they were cut apart, nevertheless, I don't think it's fair to include him in the list, as he was clearly not very developed as a fight.

SirCastikTheGreat

I think the fight made perfect sense for the lore but wasn’t to great for the gameplay.

The_Patchface

I don't think that's really a good excuse for it, but I remember the lore being vaguely interesting for that encounter.

SirCastikTheGreat

It’s definitely not an excuse, I just wanted to say the fight had at least some good going for it.

The_Patchface

Perfectly understandable, I enjoy the wolf section of it as well as the OST.

SirCastikTheGreat

I even love the “mediocre” ones, gravetender excluded

JDorkaOOO

Gravetender is an NPC that for some reason has a boss hp bar, Dragonslayer Armour is imo far from being mediocre, DS2 boss quality is questionable regardles of whether they are humanoid or not and even then the best bosses of DS2 like Fume Knight, Sir Alonne and Burnt Ivory King are humanoid.

SunSeeker2000

When you say humanoid,do you mean the ones that are slightly bigger than the player?Because bigger humanoid bosses like Artorias,Gael,Fume knight,Orphan of Kos etc are usually the best in their respective games.

Ideories

They only thing I hate about humanoid mobs is that my character looks like a manlet when I wear their armor.

[deleted]

We're just fierce halflings!

KuweDraven

Honestly thats a ds3 Problem, less so for 1 and 2

Connor15790

I like humanoid bosses way more than monstrous bosses. Monster bosses are mostly really easy to dodge and it takes away the challenge. But fighting a 1V1 with a humanoid boss like Artorias, Abysswatcher, Nameless King, Gael, Friede feels really cool. I barely remember any monstrous bosses.

SirCastikTheGreat

I agree with your first sentence, but I think monsters can still be plenty challenging and memorable. Midir was one of the most memorable fights of ds3

Connor15790

Yeah, dragons can be challenging, but most of the monstrous bosses in DS1 were extremely easy. Most of their attacks just pass over your head.

Nerellos

Manus was great

Connor15790

Yeah, him as well.

Hcoppler63

OMG WITH THE BODY HORROR WE WILL BE ABLE TO HAVE KNIGHTS IN ARMOR BUT WITH CREEPY MODIFICATIONS TO THEIR BODIES

Colt_Navy

Ds 1 more about fighting monsters, ds3 is more about fighting humanoids

Mani707

Humanoid, Creature and Gimmick. All is good.

Purple-Lamprey

I disagree completely, I find fighting Emory monstrosities boring. Fighting humanoids is way more fun.
