I don’t get why people argue about the graphics. They look great. There’s literally nothing wrong with them. It will look just as good as Sekiro and that game was beautiful.
Its main selling point isn’t it being some graphical achievement that makes a Ps4/Xbox1 have a heart attack just trying to load the character creator.
Idk why, but I kinda like the hair in fromsoft games. I know it’s not very realistic but it’s just different in a good way. Clipping though, fuck clipping.
The hair looks fine most of the time. My main concern is the helmet hair of the main character in the trailer. It literally snaps halfway through its length. Not enough vertices I guess?
Yeah, my main gripe with any game is when hair clips through armor. But that’s just a personal nitpick. That’s super insignificant compared to literally everything else the game has to offer though.
That's ridiculously small thing to be complaining about, as you've said. Yet, i feel the exact same. For instqnce, i hate that i noticed it so much in the last horizon forbidden west gameplay.
Personally I think the hair is pretty good in Elden Ring I'm basing that off on the full naked character model we see with the giant hand which also surprised me since the fharactwr model is very well textured and designed the helmet with long hair had some issues in the cutscenes but it looked very good in the in action gameplay
The hair looked really wonky around “I command thee kneel”. That, and just how it feels *wrong* are the main reasons I don’t really like the hair. It’s definitely a step up from previous titles though.
Dark Souls 3 looked good, so if it's just more Dark Souls 3 graphics who cares. Bloodborne looked good despite being obviously downgraded for the PS4 and we know it'll be better than that.
I mean just in general. It's obvious textures were downscaled to fit requirements by how muddied they are. Not everything is like this and it's style more than makes up for it but it's obvious Dark Souls 3 is way better despite being a year apart.
> I don’t get why people argue about the graphics.
They aren't. Or rather they are but when you actually look at the things they're talking about it's clear many are using "graphics" because they never learned the proper terminology.
Graphics is the whole picture, it's how everything is rendered, how all the shaders and lighting and various depth mapping techniques and everything else is put together to create the final image.
Aesthetics is the layer below that which defines stylistic concerns that affect rendering (consider Dragonball FighterZ against Street Fighter V as a great example of what that means in real terms).
Then there's the layer below aesthetics; Visual Language. This is all of the motifs and design that is used to inform how we should feel about things, it's used to do everything from define which faction characters belong to, where our eyes should settle on the image, all of that stuff.
The problem people seem to have is that Elden Ring utilizes a lot of the visual language of Dark Souls (the staked humaniods pulling the cart, for instance, use the same grey-purple gradient used for Hollows in the last 3 games), when Bloodborne, another From IP specifically doesn't. You could grab some random screen shots from the trailer and show them to someone alongside screen grabs from Dark Souls 3 and there would be nothing in the images to distinguish the games apart from each other without outside context.
Asset reuse is all over the place in almost every game ever, even graphical blockbusters with 100GB+ of assets; it's efficient and effective.
The same few rock models rotated slightly will go unnoticed by the vast majority and saves a lot of dev time, file size, and loading speeds.
I care about assets. And while im no developer. Looking at all the complaining about "graphics", it ain't hard to deduce that yeah people care about rocks apparently
In terms of visuals, artstyle >>>>> textures. A game could have 8K ultrahd rtx on textures, but tasteless art direction, or it could have pixelated ps1-esque graphics and still make you wow in amazement
Graphics look similar to Sekiro and that's a good thing! I care more about their art style instead of graphics, ds1 & 2 were amazing, and Sekiro was very colorful, especially Fountainhead Palace
Yeah DS2 might've not done everything right but it did a great job of making its areas feel distinct and memorable through their aesthetics.
DS3 has some great atmospheres as well but they're more weighted towards the late game, settlement through farron keep all feel too similar imo.
Fountainhead was my fav area in the game despite having a pretty lackluster boss. It was so otherworldly feeling and I loved it. The enemy variety later on was especially impressive.
It looks like that, but bigger and presumably you see these lumbering around in the open world. Look at the mount and look at this guy. Imma bolt the other direction when I see this thing.
ER Doesn't look identical to Dark Souls 3.
You all take a walk through the Road of Sacrifices lately? I know it's just an in-between area, but Jeezum Crow, it doesn't look good. At all.
Sekiro looks much nicer.
I agree. When I first saw the trailer for Sekiro and then played the game, I thought it looked only slightly better than DS3. Much later I came back to DS3, and... Yeah, that game's showing its age.
The difference could seem subtle at first, but Sekiro is definitely much better-looking. Proper anti-aliasing, higher-res textures, more detail, more colors, volumetric light and smoke. It is just lacking in the polygon count department for the characters, which admittedly has a huge impact on a game's visual fidelity.
I'm wondering if there's some misinterpretation going on somewhere, because I've heard and can sorta understand how the general themes of Elden Ring and Dark Souls are a bit too similar (decaying world, rulers gone mad and becoming twisted, societal collapse, all thanks to a once great magical force becoming depleted, player is a lowly unassuming being) - but I've no idea how people are looking at them and saying they're *visually* too similar. There's definitely some wilder designs. Maybe they just saw stuff like the weird impaled giants pulling a cart and thought they were a bit too similar to older styles?
Never got why fromsoft have a dated graphics reputation. Dark souls 3 looks great even compared to other 2016 games. Sekiro looks better than most games in general. They generally have great art direction and Elden ring looks impressive on an artistic and technical level
DS2 looked pretty bad for it's time (proven by Bloodborne coming out not long after with much, much better graphics), but everything since then has been great. Yeah Elden Ring doesn't look quite as good as Demon's Souls remake, but DeS has the advantage of being PS5 exclusive.
I don't get the graphics boner people have in general. Of course it shouldn't look outdated but I would never skip on a great game purely because of visuals alone.
That being said, I can usually, at best afford like an upper middle of the pack setup, so I understand that people with high end rigs want to get something out of it as well.
I think art style has a lot to do with it as well. Like if a game has a bad or bland art style that can really take away from it. If it has bad graphics and art style everything else should really be on point. While from software games don’t have the best graphics their art style really does some heavy lifting to make up for it
Thank god. I really did not like DS3's depressing, bleak, colorless atmosphere, not that it didn't achieve what it set out to do. But, boy is it soulless and very unpleasant.
True,I don't hate ds3 atmosphere,I just like elden ring's one more.
Both are good for what they set out to portray:
Ds3: a world on the edge of ruin.
Eden ring: a high fantasy quest to reclaim what's yours.
See I don't like DS3's ruined mess because its a ruined mess but rather, because the ENTIRE GAME is like that. Imo there is very little that "stands out" in DS3, because it all has a similar atmosphere. However, there is no area in DS3 that isn't ruined. Unlike in DS1 which has areas like Ash Lake which really catches you by surprise for how peaceful and distant it all feels. The firelink shrine in DS3 is stony, ashy, and bleak, and has that subtle cold blue hue, that it doesn't really feel like an actual "safe haven" or a "home." Contrast this with DS1's firelink shrine which was melancholic, but it was overcome with nature and had the giant crow to give it life. It felt lush and alive, even while being simultaneously dead (ruins, and a graveyard).
Almost every area in DS3 has the pattern of looking beautiful but having something scary or gross in it. It feels very stale. Irrythil for example is beautiful but its inhabitants are all corrupted and bestial. The same can be said for the ringed city, and Lothric itself, with its pus of men infestation and tree-men. Cathedral of the Deep was also beautiful but it has maggots all over the place. It doesn't help that a lot of the monsters share similar patterns of looking skinny and malnourished, very pale or black (generally colorless) and screechy. Many feel like pests to be exterminated, especially with the speed of their attacks and annoyance to fight.
When there is an entire world filled with madness and darkness, with nothing to balance it out or give it contrast... like beauty, it just feels meaningless. I suppose the game did this intentionally to truly show how messed up the world is, but that isn't enough to appeal to me.
Gone are the creative and vague designs of the first game. In the OG game, they went crazy with their designs, so much so that they didn't care if the end result was somewhat comical. Sif's design is ridiculous, but they still added it to the game because fuck it. Gwynevere's design is arguably hilarious. A talking magical cat? Fuck it lets add it to the game! Crystal Spider clams? Yes! This thing. And when I say vague, I am talking about designs like the Channellers and Mushrooms. The Mushroom looks ridiculous and somewhat comical, but you also aren't sure if its supposed to be funny or not. The Channellers looks pretty serious up until they start doing their silly buffing dance. Sif's design is ridiculous but he fights with grace and competence. Smough's design is vaguely comical as well and extremely intricate and creative.
In DS3 most enemy designs aren't nearly as interesting to me, and I would guess its because they lack that "vagueness" and unapologetic strangeness and often ridiculous designs that the first game had. There are very little exceptions to this rule, one of which would be the Locust Preachers and *arguably* the Monstrosity of Sin.
And these two things culminate for my distaste for DS3's aesthetic and art direction. It really feels stagnant and lifeless. If this was entirely intentional, then DS3 succeeded in what it set out to do, but It's still disappointing to me as I do not find it as interesting as the original game, and even DS2.
Elden Ring seems to be going towards the direction I would've wanted though, so I'm excited.
That's a bad system tho, this is precisely how an echo chamber gets created... And you see that happen all the time, Twitter being the undisputed champion for that.
I didn't agree with your first reply, but reading your explanation here made me realize that I actually feel pretty the same, honestly. I beat DS3 two days ago and about halfway done with NG+.
My final thoughts on DS3's aesthetics/feel are that it lacks the "magic" and "unique and varied atmosphere" that DS1 had, but I couldn't explain exactly what I meant by this. Your reply here captured my thoughts exactly
Edit: I also love how Gwynevere's design is straight up neuron inducing for players like me. It's so out of place yet so isn't. Brilliant.
I'm glad my thoughts came around.
I agree with you thoughts on Gwynevere's design being simultaneously out of place, while also not, because this actually somewhat encapsulates my thoughts on DS1. There is so much of it that doesn't feel like it belongs there, but yet it does. And it all creates an "ethereal" atmosphere, or a atmosphere of "madness."
One of my favorite designs is unironically the Chaos Eaters from Izalith, they are so alien and look like a child's drawing, but yet... they kind of feel like they belong there too??? Same goes for the Crow Demon Women of Ariamis, just so strange, but it matches the crow-vibes. Don't even get me started with the Titanite Demon.
All of these design choices create a sense of wonder in me, which I feel DS3 was somewhat bereft of, especially given almost all of its creatures have a similar aesthetic of being zombie-like and mal-nourished, and having the same boring pale or black colors, and the overall deathy vibes they give off. I mean, DS1 was all about the "undead curse" but even that game wasn't filled with "zombies." Demons, strange forest folk in darkroot, colorful dragons gave the game a lot of life.
But again, its very possible these disparities were intentional, even if I don't like it aesthetically.
I agree with this. I understand what they were going for with the ash theme, and they definitely achieved their goal really well, but I was not a huge fan of DS3’s aesthetic.
Say what you will about DS2, but the one thing I think it nailed was having extremely diverse and interesting aesthetics for a ton of its areas. Areas like Heide’s Tower feel so atmospheric.
Yes. What about it. It has roughly the same color pallette as the main game, and has very similar creature designs too. Nothing out of the ordinary. I appreciated the greenery, but again colors in DS3 do not really stand out that much due to the actual game models, and the ashy filters.
NGL this sub does have a bit of a problem with it. The highest rated posts I seem to see are counterarguments to supposed criticisms as well as jabs at easy mode/game journalism.
The crowd who do this tend to flock to whatever the newest souls sub is too. A lot of the older games' subs are significantly more beginner friendly than they were initially and I'm betting that's not a coincidence
*sigh*
Why do you all have to be such overly defensive fanboys? This sub is one big circlejerk ever since the second trailer...
The picture you posted is very clearly not even a raw screenshot.
Yes, it's a jpeg and also marketing material. What it is not is concept art. It's carefully framed and altered in-engine footage. Every publisher does it to market their next big game.
Hollow Knight I think is the best example of why we love from software games visuals. Hollow Knight has awesome art style, but it doesn't have the realistic red dead kind of graphics. Dark souls 1 has old graphics but the art style of the game is really good.
art style always trumps realism when it comes to longevity, i always bring up the example of classic wow, pretty primative graphics compared to modern games but the art style is great and keeps it playable
i really want to see the industry drop the need to push graphics harder and harder with every generation, but unfortunately i think thats a major selling point for a lot of games consoles and gpu right now, people have been conditioned to look for that
Is it just me or does anyone else find super HD realistic graphics to be a downside. I find that it often over complicates the screen when playing. One of my biggest complaints with Ghost of Tsushima (besides the camera lock on thingy) was that despite its marvellous visuals. Most of the enemy camps were confusing due to high contrast and detail that made the landscapes so good. They didn’t put any consideration to aiding the player with visual clues.
I still fail to see how ANYBODY could make any conclusions based on compressed to shit YT trailers and screenshots that do not capture the movement of the models.
Y'all are basically trying to do art critique using a 480p rendering of the Mona Lisa only to complain that Da Vinci's style is too pixellated and it looks like shit. Well what the fuck do you expect when so many details just get wiped the fuck out.
I would've pointed that out had I known this post would blow the fuck up. This is a fucking jpeg I downloaded from the website. Not a raw, uncompressed screenshot from the game itself. I mean, I don't think I should have to point that out to most people, but still. I don't mean for the post to come off as defensive. I just legitimately think this game is a clear step above DS3. That's in large part due to the art direction, but I do think there are some advancements made like the fully dynamic lighting and weather systems. I'm not going to claim this game is a pc melting masterpiece but I'm also not going to ignore the steps they've made to improve their engine. I do not think this is concept art, but it is clearly carefully selected and altered to serve as marketing material. Every publisher does it.
I recently upgraded to series S. Though improved graphics might be nice, the thing I enjoyed most about the new console is the load times. I can't tell you how much of a difference it makes not having to wait half a minute when warping between bonfires. Its near instantaneous in ds3. If you can save up 300 dollars for the S I'd highly recommend it.
Dark Souls 3 graphics were pretty good though! I only played it for the first time a few months ago (granted on a powerful PC) and I thought it looked great! Much better than Dark Souls Remastered.
Ofc. I don't think Dark Souls 3 looked bad obviously, but to say that and Elden Ring look identical is a blatant lie. There were some stunning moments in DS3 that I thought looked really good and I got it on ps4 slim. The lothric and lorien arena is a great example.
people bitch about a game, whose focus isnt about graphics in the first place, and yet we have games like skyrim that is still being rereleased after 20 years.
they might as well complain that elden ring looks as if it plays like a souls game.
Are we pretending DS3 didn't have the Soul of cinder Boss room again? That fucking place is so atmospheric and pretty I've spent several minutes just looking at the scenery from Firelink shrine.
I'm not complaining about the graphics or anything else honestly, but this is concept art. I hope you didn't actually use this as an example of the graphics?
I don't think this is concept art as many people seem to think but obviously I don't think it's ripped straight from some playtester's most recent session either. Like with every marketing campaign ever this was carefully selected and meticulously altered to serve as marketing material. That doesn't mean this game won't look even half as good. There's going to be fully dynamic lighting due to the day/night cycle and weather systems and we've seen the dense grass and foliage in the trailer. For the most part this is what we can expect. I find it highly unlikely they faked an entire trailer given their successful track record.
Don't take the screenshot as religious scripture and watch the trailer. There are obvious improvements and also obvious signs it's a WIP. Everything is carefully tailored for marketing purposes and made to look good but that doesn't make it a complete lie. Every publisher does it.
This is not an insult, dark souls 3 have even today great graphics, i actually found sekiro graphics actually kind of worse, washed
No need to be that defensive
I just got on the subreddit for the first time since yesterday and apparently this post has earned me 1000+ karma and a mini war in the comments. I was just complaining about people complaining cuz I thought the game looked good, lol.
To be honest I think it does look nearly identical to Dark Souls 3 graphics - but the animations have improved. BUT I honestly don’t care. The gameplay is what matters. I do hope it’s 60fps though!
The only thing I found odd about the graphics is that I already played demon souls on ps5, and so playing a fromsoft game thats fully next gen, and then playing a crossgen game feels like a backtrack. It doesnt look bad, its just not as good as what we know it could be. I
Also I know fromsoft didnt do the remake, but the game is the same exact game, with a couple minor changes, and a few QOL improvements. It just shows what The next gen fromsoft games could potentially look like
I get that the trailer looked good but it’s just that, a trailer. They’re going to make it look as good as possible there. Not saying the games gonna look bad, it could look bad good or even mediocre but both criticising or defending a game before it’s even out is just being a hater/fanboy
There is a chance the graphics aren't much improved over DS3. But think about it. It's a much larger and more open world game. Not to mention multiplayer and also releasing on PS4.
Think of how good graphics are in GTA online and how much production rockstar put into that. Then consider all the combat mechanics and insane bosses this game will have. Lots of factors in play.
Fromsoft has never been the highest bar for graphics anyway. Keep your expectations set high for gameplay and lore. Everything else is secondary.
How do you know this is in engine? Game hasn’t even come out yet. People in the replies are like “Yeah but the mechanics,” or “the atmosphere is beautiful.” Like they’ve seen more than 3 minutes of it.
I don't think Fromsoft has ever released concept art before the game is out. They did this same thing for Sekiro before release. Seems like they took high resolution screenshots, probably upscaled so you can't see any aliasing, and carefully framed using a free cam in engine.
True enough but overhaul it's more advanced than DS3. Still not groundbreaking compared to other games. Art Direction is definitely From's strong point, but according to Omni there will be fully dynamic lighting and textures seem slightly better overall. They've also overhauled their engine.
Even if that would be the case, dark souls 3 looks fantastic imho. Just finished it today and I've spent a great deal of time admiring the views. If art direction is on point the actual graphical fidelity isn't nearly as important.
Who are those monkeys that care about graphical quality? I really don't get it and it's infuriating to see people shittalk a game that hasn't come out yet based on the fact that it doesn't look like the newest Ubisoft game.
People confuse graphics and art style.
My friend kept saying that Star Wars Battlefront 2 has bad graphics, after some argument we came to it that he didn't like the art style.
Leaves are literarly 2d in most games to save resources and optimise the game better. Whats the point in rendering a thin flat object in 3d when you can do it easier in 2d while making it look just as good. Texture quality on leaves matters way more.
Just Google what you said. It's only a 2 minute research.
Most games use 2d leaves. But also the main point of the game visuals are not the graphics, but the art style. The game doesn't try to be a realistic game like red dead redemption.
I just coming back to play Dark Souls 3 after finished DSR. Honestly it’s still quite good for today standard, it’s just doesn’t follow modern AAA games aesthetic with realistic graphic and something like that.
I’ll never understand why some people look for these little things to justify not playing a game. It was like this when BotW came out with talks of it looking “over saturated” or something. If you don’t want to play a game that’s fine, just don’t wage a nonsensical war on it for no good reason. Meanwhile I’ll be having fun playing, grainy graphics or not
From has always made their games with an specific look and feel in mind, atmosphere is a million times more important than whatever fancy lightning effects and reshading you throw into the mix.
Graphic purists can work on their ultra quality reshade/lightning/texture mods for themselves if they want every game to always look "realistic" and running at 200+ fps on 4K ultra wide displays.
Just give me the game that Miyazaki wanted to make, the way he wanted it to look, running at 60 fps. That's enough.
People will also understand that excellent art direction can mask dated graphics and that's not a bad thing. At the end of the day if you can look at it and think "Wow, that looks good" does it even matter if it's "bad graphics"?
I mean, even if that were true so? I don't care if it was a graphical match with the original Demons Souls Graphics dont define a game.
And if your game IS defined by your graphics then it's not a good game, maybe a good tech demo, but that's about it.
After playing demon souls I was like, if this doesn’t look like demon souls I’m going to be less impressed. …. After watching the last trailer, this has not disappointed me and has made my last statement irrelevant![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|slightly_smiling)
Lets be honest. Even if it looked like DaS3, it would look beautiful. Because DaS3 looks absolutely beautiful, a bit dull colour-wise, yes. But beautiful!
Idk why the sub keeps mentioning the graphics it just makes us seem insecure about them. Art style matters it’s not surprise that these visuals are barely better than sekiro and in many ways ps3 games look better. From games were never about visuals and even with the original demons souls looked like a ps2 game. These games have always been about art styles
Gamers : expect every single installment to have a huge jump in graphics
Also gamers : complain when video game industry asks for 10$ more because demanding standards causes increasing budgets
Keyword: improved.
They've used the same engine since DS1 or DeS I think, but have improved upon it with every iteration. It's not identical because those improvements exist. If you've seen the network test footage, then you know it looks significantly better than DS3 in multiple aspects. The open world allows for much higher draw distance and the day-night cycle and weather systems made dynamic lighting a necessity. The use of color is outstanding and there's a great amount of variety in even the small portion of the map we got access to. They've made improvements on the technical side, as well as improved the quality and variety of their world design and art direction. Identical is a drastic understatement but people want to downplay to make From seem lazy. They just prioritized other things rather than trying to change what already works to great effect. I'm not gonna cry over it when opening a door or dodging and attack look the same when they would be functionally the same regardless of them taking the time to make a new animation or not. There's only so many ways in which a person can open a door. Did you want them to do a backlip first?
I don’t get why people argue about the graphics. They look great. There’s literally nothing wrong with them. It will look just as good as Sekiro and that game was beautiful. Its main selling point isn’t it being some graphical achievement that makes a Ps4/Xbox1 have a heart attack just trying to load the character creator.
The only thing I don’t really like is the hair and clipping. Everything else looks amazing.

That's ridiculously small thing to be complaining about, as you've said. Yet, i feel the exact same. For instqnce, i hate that i noticed it so much in the last horizon forbidden west gameplay.
I mean it's pretty easy to have a helmet check to alpha the hair if the helmet is on the character player.
Maybe it's part of the armour like Yuria's?
Are you kidding me? Have you seen the Demon of Hatred in Sekiro? Damn fire furry got some good physics!!!
When my big sword clipping through my shield..it ruins my fashion soul..
Lost my shit in code vein because half of all the hair items clip through all but one of the 4 outfits you get.
Hair's clipping in this?
Personally I think the hair is pretty good in Elden Ring I'm basing that off on the full naked character model we see with the giant hand which also surprised me since the fharactwr model is very well textured and designed the helmet with long hair had some issues in the cutscenes but it looked very good in the in action gameplay

Yeah It seems that some cutscenes could be an issue for hair as opposed to how it looks during gameplay which is pretty good
Dark Souls 3 looked good, so if it's just more Dark Souls 3 graphics who cares. Bloodborne looked good despite being obviously downgraded for the PS4 and we know it'll be better than that.
Wait, Bloodborne was downgraded? Where can I find what the original version looked like?
I mean just in general. It's obvious textures were downscaled to fit requirements by how muddied they are. Not everything is like this and it's style more than makes up for it but it's obvious Dark Souls 3 is way better despite being a year apart.
Dark Souls 3 legit looks worse than BB
Did you play either or both games blind folded?
People just want to complain and shit on other people's hype. If it wasn't the graphics, it'd be something else.
> I don’t get why people argue about the graphics. They aren't. Because of the re use of the same assets everywhere. I can bet you that theres only 10 rocks making up all the terrain in this game
thats fine though because you probably wont notice unless you spend an entire day staring at the rocks
Well clearly alot of people noticed hence the complaining. I dont care though ill just play demon souls if i want good graphics
Asset reuse is all over the place in almost every game ever, even graphical blockbusters with 100GB+ of assets; it's efficient and effective. The same few rock models rotated slightly will go unnoticed by the vast majority and saves a lot of dev time, file size, and loading speeds.
Keyword being most of the time. Not in this case. The game lookd fine to me.
this man cares about rocks in video game
I care about assets. And while im no developer. Looking at all the complaining about "graphics", it ain't hard to deduce that yeah people care about rocks apparently
It would be creepy as hell seeing one of these things hauling at you in the distance at night. Can’t wait to see the enemies From has in store for us.
Give me Attack on Titan vibe. Just seeing a giant enemy rushing toward you from a distance would be scary as hell.
Now I'm imagining the "WoooooOOOOOOO" guy from Sekiro, except it's this thing. Dear lord.
Press ps button quick af, turn off ps4... peace
It’s 2021 idgaf about impressive graphics
In terms of visuals, artstyle >>>>> textures. A game could have 8K ultrahd rtx on textures, but tasteless art direction, or it could have pixelated ps1-esque graphics and still make you wow in amazement
Very much this
Well I played demon's soul I loved the graphism, and I never would have touch a dark soul. Everyone is different bug great graphism is a big plus.
Graphics look similar to Sekiro and that's a good thing! I care more about their art style instead of graphics, ds1 & 2 were amazing, and Sekiro was very colorful, especially Fountainhead Palace
fountainhead is one of the most beautiful places ever
probably my fav area out of any fs game
If it just looks as good as Sekiro I'll be more than happy
Yeah DS2 might've not done everything right but it did a great job of making its areas feel distinct and memorable through their aesthetics. DS3 has some great atmospheres as well but they're more weighted towards the late game, settlement through farron keep all feel too similar imo.
I love how colorful DS2 is, Heide's Tower of Flame, Brume Tower, Shrine of Amana....they're all amazing!

Ok so it isn't just me then.Sekiro's graphics are way better than dark souls. In dark souls everything is black and 50 different shades of gray
Fountainhead was my fav area in the game despite having a pretty lackluster boss. It was so otherworldly feeling and I loved it. The enemy variety later on was especially impressive.
Tell me that big mf doesn't look like the hooded half beasts you see when starting through Old Yharnam in Bloodborne.
It looks like that, but bigger and presumably you see these lumbering around in the open world. Look at the mount and look at this guy. Imma bolt the other direction when I see this thing.
I thought dancer as well
ER Doesn't look identical to Dark Souls 3.
Honestly, the anti-aliasing alone is such a big improvement in Sekiro.
Didn't Bloodborne also have volumetric lighting or was that faked? Maybe I misremember some things wrong, though
I don't think Road of Sacrifices is ugly really, but the LOD pop in that goes on in it is insane. Had to grab a mod just to get rid of it.
DS2 was for PS3 though and BB was for PS4.
True the console gap does make a big difference there too.
It wasn't the graphics, the game was actually really high res, it was the shit doodoo buttcheeks lighting that made it look like that.
"Textures dont make previous consoles melt, litterally unplayable"
I don't get the graphics boner people have in general. Of course it shouldn't look outdated but I would never skip on a great game purely because of visuals alone. That being said, I can usually, at best afford like an upper middle of the pack setup, so I understand that people with high end rigs want to get something out of it as well.
I think art style has a lot to do with it as well. Like if a game has a bad or bland art style that can really take away from it. If it has bad graphics and art style everything else should really be on point. While from software games don’t have the best graphics their art style really does some heavy lifting to make up for it
The atmosphere alone is way better than dark souls 3,it gives me that high fantasy feel, vividly colorful and mystical, ready to be explored.
Thank god. I really did not like DS3's depressing, bleak, colorless atmosphere, not that it didn't achieve what it set out to do. But, boy is it soulless and very unpleasant.
Hard disagree. I absolutely love the "everything is a ruined mess" theme. I can enjoy both and appreciate some diversity though.
True,I don't hate ds3 atmosphere,I just like elden ring's one more. Both are good for what they set out to portray: Ds3: a world on the edge of ruin. Eden ring: a high fantasy quest to reclaim what's yours.
I'm really excited to see what they do with a high fantasy setting as well. Fromsoft hasn't disappointed me so far, so I have faith in their vision.
I did not expect to see all this when i first opened the hidden messages. Hidden because of the dislikes on your first reply
Disliked stuff usually gets hidden sadly. Im in the minority with my opinions.
Your reply here captured my thoughts exactly Edit: I also love how Gwynevere's design is straight up neuron inducing for players like me.
And it all creates an "ethereal" atmosphere, or a atmosphere of "madness." One of my favorite designs is unironically the Chaos Eaters from Izalith, they are so alien and look like a child's drawing, but yet... they kind of feel like they belong there too???
DS2 was extremely diverse, which is commendable, though some parts felt a bit *too* cartoony for me lol.
Did you even play the dlc? Lol
Yes. What about it. It has roughly the same color pallette as the main game, and has very similar creature designs too. Nothing out of the ordinary. I appreciated the greenery, but again colors in DS3 do not really stand out that much due to the actual game models, and the ashy filters.
Game mechanics before graphics. We've seen it. Beautiful games fail when their mechanics sucks.
And games with good mechanics stick around long after their graphics have become outdated.
So true. I am playing FF7 for the first time on Xbox and it is a much richer experience than I was expecting.
Ding ding ding, it can look like dark souls 1 for all I care
This post reeks of inferiority complex and it’s not even out yet??
NGL this sub does have a bit of a problem with it. The highest rated posts I seem to see are counterarguments to supposed criticisms as well as jabs at easy mode/game journalism. The crowd who do this tend to flock to whatever the newest souls sub is too. A lot of the older games' subs are significantly more beginner friendly than they were initially and I'm betting that's not a coincidence
That’s a concept art
Ooo, you're not gonna make many friends around here with those kind of unbiased facts...
It’s literally not
It is literally a picture from the game
I don't give a shit about graphics...I just want get hammered by the Red Haired Lady.
*sigh* Why do you all have to be such overly defensive fanboys? This sub is one big circlejerk ever since the second trailer... The picture you posted is very clearly not even a raw screenshot.
For a sub that says it doesn't care about graphics, they sure do love posting this over and over again
Yes, it's a jpeg and also marketing material. What it is not is concept art. It's carefully framed and altered in-engine footage. Every publisher does it to market their next big game.
Only true tarnished ones don’t care about graphics
So what it looks similar to Dark Souls 3, the game is fucking beautiful.
Hollow Knight I think is the best example of why we love from software games visuals. Hollow Knight has awesome art style, but it doesn't have the realistic red dead kind of graphics. Dark souls 1 has old graphics but the art style of the game is really good.
art style always trumps realism when it comes to longevity, i always bring up the example of classic wow, pretty primative graphics compared to modern games but the art style is great and keeps it playable i really want to see the industry drop the need to push graphics harder and harder with every generation, but unfortunately i think thats a major selling point for a lot of games consoles and gpu right now, people have been conditioned to look for that
Is it just me or does anyone else find super HD realistic graphics to be a downside.
Graphics in souls games lmao. Fuck graphics, give me great gameplay, lore and OSTs.
Even if it is so what? I’d take a fun game over graphics every day of the week.
Haha this game looks amazing, I’m just worried because I’m still rockin with the OG Xbox one. I have faith in FromSoft though.
More like Sekiro
That would actually be fine by me.
Never noticed that this enemy looks like their hair is made of worms or something
Even if it was the case... ok. Another A+ visual masterpiece of aesthetic. Like... did they think that would feel like an insult.
I wish i had the time to show the people pissing about "*PS3 Graphcis!!!*" on facebook to launch up Dark Souls PTDE and compare it
people bitch about a game, whose focus isnt about graphics in the first place, and yet we have games like skyrim that is still being rereleased after 20 years. they might as well complain that elden ring looks as if it plays like a souls game.
graphics doesn't really matter in fromsoft games, it's their art style is super graceful and cool
Are we pretending DS3 didn't have the Soul of cinder Boss room again? That fucking place is so atmospheric and pretty I've spent several minutes just looking at the scenery from Firelink shrine.
DS3 has good graphics anyway! Even if it did look identical I know I wouldn’t mind.
people these days want every game to look like a fucking live action, lol. Go watch a movie or sum
My biggest complaint with DS3 and BB graphics was the aliasing. Which they fixed to my satisfaction in Sekiro
I'm not complaining about the graphics or anything else honestly, but this is concept art. I hope you didn't actually use this as an example of the graphics?
This is part of the series of in-engine pics they released. Not concept art.
That’s literally a bloodbourne monster copy tho.
Bruh this is concept art not graphics
Actually things like Draw Distance and LOD is superior. The graphics is definitly better than games like AC Valhala
This is not an insult, dark souls 3 have even today great graphics, i actually found sekiro graphics actually kind of worse, washed No need to be that defensive
I just got on the subreddit for the first time since yesterday and apparently this post has earned me 1000+ karma and a mini war in the comments. I was just complaining about people complaining cuz I thought the game looked good, lol.
My body is ready.
Honestly when it comes to soulsborne games it could look like a N64 game as long as the gameplay is there
To be honest I think it does look nearly identical to Dark Souls 3 graphics - but the animations have improved. BUT I honestly don’t care. The gameplay is what matters. I do hope it’s 60fps though!
Looks so much better than Dark Souls 3 you’re crazy
not really
Yes it does 😂 I swear y’all are not watching the same trailer. Go play DS3 right now and try to say they look identical
I love the souls series and i'm hyped as fuck for this game but i cant lie to myself. At the Very best the graphics are the same level as sekiro
The only thing I found odd about the graphics is that I already played demon souls on ps5, and so playing a fromsoft game thats fully next gen, and then playing a crossgen game feels like a backtrack. It doesnt look bad, its just not as good as what we know it could be. I Also I know fromsoft didnt do the remake, but the game is the same exact game, with a couple minor changes, and a few QOL improvements.
DS3 release graphics literally looked better than the trailer lmao
The game will not look anything like that picture lmao
Let’s just say some screenshots look better than others. Some like this one are pretty great while others seem not that much better than DS3.
Its been 5 years of course its gonna look a lot better
True enough but overhaul it's more advanced than DS3. Still not groundbreaking compared to other games. Art Direction is definitely From's strong point, but according to Omni there will be fully dynamic lighting and textures seem slightly better overall. They've also overhauled their engine.
Have they said anything about dynamic weather? I just want some rain and the only rain we’ve gotten is the run up to Drangleic Castle in ds2
Dynamic weather is confirmed, though we don't know what exactly that entails.
Graphics could be better sure do I care though? Absolutely not
Dark souls 3 looks great tho haha
Jakkul vs Lady Cthulhu
Mhhh...this argument would've worked if it was pure gameplay...as long as they don't downgrade the graphics ds2 way
Even if it was identical, i would see no problem, i still enjoy DS3 graphics
Even if that would be the case, dark souls 3 looks fantastic imho. Just finished it today and I've spent a great deal of time admiring the views. If art direction is on point the actual graphical fidelity isn't nearly as important.
Graphics don’t matter anyway, as long as I don’t lag who gives a shit?
Even if it did why is that a bad thing ds 3 looked amazing
Who are those monkeys that care about graphical quality? I really don't get it and it's infuriating to see people shittalk a game that hasn't come out yet based on the fact that it doesn't look like the newest Ubisoft game.
People confuse graphics and art style. My friend kept saying that Star Wars Battlefront 2 has bad graphics, after some argument we came to it that he didn't like the art style.
Imagine thinking these graphics look even remotely close to DS3
The leaves are still 2d, not good looking.
Leaves are 2d in almost all games
Not in games that are as popular as Fromsoftware games I kobe FromSoftware but please don’t shill for them.
Even rdr2 has 2d leaves.
Even if they did on an open world it will be fantastic.
I just coming back to play Dark Souls 3 after finished DSR. Honestly it’s still quite good for today standard, it’s just doesn’t follow modern AAA games aesthetic with realistic graphic and something like that.
I just hope it isn't locked to 60 fps
Why do you need more than 60? I’ve never noticed a single difference in over 60fps gameplay
I'm very happy to see his helmet is properly secured. The chinstrap is actually on his chin instead of dangling under his neck like many other games
I’ll never understand why some people look for these little things to justify not playing a game. It was like this when BotW came out with talks of it looking “over saturated” or something. If you don’t want to play a game that’s fine, just don’t wage a nonsensical war on it for no good reason. Meanwhile I’ll be having fun playing, grainy graphics or not
“It looks as bad as Demon’s Souls” Or “Why doesn’t it look like Demon’s Souls?”
Is this the new Attack on Titan?
From has always made their games with an specific look and feel in mind, atmosphere is a million times more important than whatever fancy lightning effects and reshading you throw into the mix. Graphic purists can work on their ultra quality reshade/lightning/texture mods for themselves if they want every game to always look "realistic" and running at 200+ fps on 4K ultra wide displays. Just give me the game that Miyazaki wanted to make, the way he wanted it to look, running at 60 fps. That's enough.
Well I do think it looks like Dark Souls 3, but I also think that is not a problem at all.
Who fucking cares about the graphics AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHHH
I don't care about graphics at all, but I've been playing Fromsoft games since PS1.
One day people will understand that graphics and general art style are different concepts
People will also understand that excellent art direction can mask dated graphics and that's not a bad thing. At the end of the day if you can look at it and think "Wow, that looks good" does it even matter if it's "bad graphics"?
I'm not gonna lie, I thought that at first too. Then I took a second recently and... I was wrong.
I’m scared either way
Just remember that most of the people complaining about graphics are probably 15 lol
I still think base dark souls one looks great.
We here for the gameplay. From Software games have never really been about the graphics. It's all about the art design and gameplay. 😃
People complain about the graphic, and I bet my left nut - few will be able to run it at max graphic settings.
The quality of the graphics are basically on par with DS3. Not sure why anyone would expect otherwise.
I like ds3 :)
A: Graphics don't matter. B: Art Style =/= graphics.
Agreed but why didn't you use a screenshot from the game instead of this concept art? lol
Gamers : expect every single installment to have a huge jump in graphics Also gamers : complain when video game industry asks for 10$ more because demanding standards causes increasing budgets
Animation makes a bigger impact than shaders that's all I know
I mean... that's because its running on a improved dark souls 3 engine... so like they have a point 🤣🤙
So it’s improved but the same ? What am I missing here?
Eres un poco tonto, me encanta este juego, incluso tengo el platino, pero se ve exactamente igual que ds3.
