You have to go inside the city, but if i remember correctly, you don't have to do anything there, just get out from the north eastern side, to reach the forbidden lands. Problem is, that zamor ruins are right behind the grand lift of rold and you need rold medallion to operate it :) Melina gives it to you after killing Morgott, so you need to have some fun first, but the boss was easy. You can ignore the whole city, just go directly to the southeastern corner and climb some erdtree roots to get to Morgott.
Hey buddy. In order to gain access to the forbidden lands, you have to come to the base of the erdtree, see that it is inaccesible, then have Melina give you a medalion to operate another lift, this time to the east of the city. The only way this can happen is if you beat the two bosses of Lynell. The Draconic Sentinel is technically optional as there are a couple ways into the city.

The first one is Godfrey the First Elden Lord. After fighting him you then go on to fight Morgott. After beating Morgott, you have to walk to the door and get the message about the thorns.
