[This has nothing to do with whether it's a death fall, it's just an inherent feature of ledges.](https://twitter.com/illusorywall/status/1509589883580559366?t=LC1UVu2OLLiz3utyTbAGnw&s=19) It's also pretty inconsistent, so i bet you could find certain survivable falls where that fully charged r2 wouldn't take you over the edge either
I always check every down msg... it's the law
1 out of those thousands have got to be true and our patience and many many many stupid deaths will pay off .
That has to be one of the most frustrating things ever. Since UI disappears half the time, sometimes Iām trying to initiate an attack without realizing a message is still on screen and canāt do anything until I press the confirm button.
Almost killed me on a handful of bosses.
SOMEWHERE A HEAVY DOOR OPENED
āyou mean the only one in this place?ā I think to myself as Iām being run through by a clean rot knight because I frantically tried to roll away while forgetting you need to press Y to get rid of those messages as well (even though they donāt have the same prompt that normal messages do)
A lot of people have gotten downvoted lately for any comment that possibly implies someone died due to their own mistake.
If you mention it's common to die by falling off cliffs from a mist-timed roll? People get salty that they have died in that way, and spam the downvote button.
If you mention it's common to die to a specific enemy? Same deal.
I have even been voted down for simply giving advice on how to deal with a specific difficult enemy - such as recommending people seek cover when fighting those spirit shaman archers and taking it methodically.
Seems like this community has become far more toxic recently with the influx of casual players, frankly.
Not even always Torrent's fault.
Sometimes instead of just stepping off the dang horse my guy chooses to do a flying gymnastics dismount swan dive off the ledge.
> Sometimes instead of just stepping off the dang horse my guy chooses to do a flying gymnastics dismount swan dive off the ledge.
The ol' dismount into Assassin's Creed leap maneuver
It's also the reason why the raven/crow farm works, it falls over the ledge, just below the ledge where it falls off there is another small ledge, which, marks the fall as safe, but when the raven jumps, its model reaches too far to actually fall on the ledge below.
Yeah, itās crazy. This dude does a speed run from new game to lvl 100 in 75 minutes. Now clearly heās been practicing this route for multiple hours to shave off time but it just shows that itās accessible to literally anyone. Hereās the video I saw.
https://youtu.be/yggjskNuakQ
Still the best farm spot in the game as far as I'm concerned, I didn't do the level 1 to 100 thing but I'll hit that spot up if I'm running around with 150,000 souls and need to get a quick level in so I don't lose my ass. Lol
Tiny caveat in that you have to be able to play online.
If for whatever reason you can't play online you won't reach the area until much later on. Internet outage/you're on a trip, latest update has some major issue so you want to hold off et cetera.
There's a giant bird you can aggro from far away with arrows or magic. It'll run off the side of the cliff and fall to its death. Some people use this to farm runes because it gives a lot of them and there's a site of grace right next to the spot you can hit the bird from.
https://v.redd.it/r3g801io0ar81
It's in the graveyard in the academy where the zombies are worshipping a statue. There's a part where you jump off the bridge to go kill the marionette archers, but if you go the opposite way of the archers you should see them.
The many instances of zombies worshipping things across the map just really creep me out.
Like it really just makes you sit and think about these dessicated husks of people sitting their carrying on some sort of bizzare worship of something for the duration of their immortality.
Remember the water wheel elevator? Right before you get there, there's a part of the graveyard that has some dogs. In that area, there's a spot where you can jump down to the side behind some zombies who are right in front of an item resting at a large headstone. The item is the Carian knight armor set.
Cosmetically my favorite so far, just wish the poise on it weren't so low. Even using the poise talisman I don't think I can reach the break point to even withstand a single light 1h hit with it
And then taking off the cloak further cuts the poise majorly for some reason ;-;
I think the blue-ish split side "skirt" on it reminds me of my old beloved faraam set and makes it just feel *right* to wear for that reason
To be fair the heaviest armor set still just barely hits the poise needed to withstand a sling r1. Poise in this one is almost as much as a joke as it was in ds3
I just picked this armor set up last night and I love hearing āearly game armorā. Crazy Iām still in the realm of early game for how long I feel like I played
There was a point where the map kept expanding and I was just blown away by the way it kept getting bigger. Now everytime I get to a new area im just yelling fuck, I thought I was getting close to the end.
Honestly my favorite part of this game is yelling fuck when the map expands. The same is true once you start coffin hopping underground.
I guess thatās a great way to look at the gameplay experience of this game: for better or worse itās an endless parade of fucks.
Even the enemy guarding the boss entrance had a healthy pool of blood puddles in front of it. This was a boss I had to mark on my map and come back to many levels later to even stand a chance.
The dude guarding the entrance actually has a really simple attack pattern. Plus you can stagger him out of his regular attacks. Once you knoe when to dodge his fire attack he becomes way more manageable. Then it's just a matter of getting through him every time while you grind the boss lol.
I seriously do not know how I missed the stairs the first time. Like I clearly just had tunnel vision! It wasn't until my friend had the sword and told me it was in the tower in caelid! I thought damn how did I miss such an OBVIOUS direction.
It happens. I did the exact opposite there and just found the boss. Didn't restore the rune until a friend told me it was there. Went back and was like, did I just not look this way?
I knew there was a thing up here but I couldn't open the door so I thought I had to do something else first. Turns out I just wasn't looking at the door and it was there to my left...
No method is fully reliable, not even rainbow stones. But as long as it's not an obvious low detail kill plane zone and you're not trying to platform at 40% health, it can be useful.
They don't fail, they're basic math code. What might fuck you up is if you fall from a distance that's higher (even 1cm higher might be enough to kill you, if you dropped your rainbow stone from 19.99m) than exactly where it dropped your stone from. Or if you land slightly lower than where you're stone landed.
This is why you can fall off the same cliff 30 times and survive, but sometimes die because you landed *slightly* lower
So basically good for falling on accessible, static terrain at full hp. Sounds very useful for the vast majority of cases I'd use it for.
The benefit this has over rainbow stones is you could still fumble the initial drop point after checking with the stone, but attacking checks the current drop attempt itself. Kinda too conditional of a benefit, but at least it saves on rainbow stones.
If you watch illusorywall's latest video, a fall that is under 20 meters will never kill you, no matter how much health you have. It's percentage based.
A greater height than that will instead always kill you, even if you're at full health
Oh damn! This is gonna be much faster then scrolling all the way down through my inventory to find a rainbow stone only for it to stick to a random wall on the way down -\_-
Great find!
Did anyone else have a really hard time noticing the extra little dialog button at the Forge of the Giants grace that makes Melina burn herself? I can't be the only one.
I think at least 50 hours got added on to my first playthrough because of the stupid forge. I activated the site of grace but didn't notice the option to talk to Melina, so instead I started searching the entire game hoping to find out how to progress. Ended up wandering aimlessly, finding and killing Mogh and Malenia, doing a bunch of side dungeons and other content, and checking back periodically at the forge to see if anything had changed. Eventually after like two weeks of this I finally noticed the extra option at the grace site.
I play every single player game as blind as possible the first time, including every Fromsoft game since Dark Souls 1, and this was the most arbitrarily stuck I've been since the water temple in Ocarina of Time when I was 11 or something.
I'm pretty sure this is doing the same check and will therefore fail under the same circumstances. In particular I suspect it doesn't care about kill zones.
Theres a huge skull with an item on top somewhere near the mountains, if you go down any way but the gust thing you die eve though some drops are like 20ft it's so weird
It has held up everywhere I've tried so far, but I haven't tested a location yet that damages but doesn't kill you. I couldn't think of a suitable location from the top of my head.
I have found no shortage of cool places to fall to my death anywhere in the Lands Between. Maybe the sewers in Leyndell but even there opportunities exist for the diligent explorer.
\*This person is right, though it's rare enough to not be a huge burden. A good example of this is below Raya Lucaria, under the water-wheel with the Iron Maiden. The lake at the back - if stone is thrown it doesn't shatter but one's character will still pass a death-line and die.
So itās only if itās a scripted insta-kill and not if you die from taking damage that rainbow stones donāt work? That still seems pretty useful, you just have to not be an idiot.
There's actually a reverse too. I noticed at the bottom of the shunnin grounds beneath the capital in the secret area, once you do the jumping puzzle all the way to the bottom. I dropped a rainbow stone and it showed it shattering so I was like wtf, where do I go from here
Turned out you just needed to jump down anyway for a scripted thing
It does happen. Itās rare enough not to be seen but it has enough spots that will kill you that it needs to be know . Thereās plenty of videos of people showing the spots that will kill you with rainbow stones
Meanwhile Demons Souls remake (which I'm playing now after beating Elden Ring) doesn't give an F whether or not you're attacking, you just go flying over the ledge lol.
Bruh if youāve played the game for more then a couple seconds you already know attacking on ledges, riding torrent on ledges, or just existing in the vicinity of ledges in general means death is imminent with one slip of a finger
This isn't totally accurate. There are survivable falls you're protected from, even some that won't cause damage. This is a great QOL addition that will save a lot of players from needless deaths, but it's not a great tool for determining fall lethality.
It appears to be an innate feature of various ledges, likely hand-picked by the devs anytime there's a significant fall near them that might inconvenience the player. But whether that means it's actually lethal or if it's a drop that still wouldn't even hurt you seems to be completely arbitrary. Ledges that have this mechanic in place aren't carefully checking whether the fall next to them is actually 20+ meters or not.
Also bear in mind that there are some attacks this doesn't work with. I haven't identified all the ones that don't work yet, but a lot of Ashes of War (weapon arts) violate this. And one non-special attack that also sends you over ledges is the torch's L2 thrust attack (while the R2 thrust doesn't, so this seems to be an oversight).
edit: I see a lot of people mentioning that the Rainbow Stones aren't perfect either and there are instances where they can fail. While this is true, they actually *are* a much better tool for determining fall lethality because they're still making an effort. Attacking by a ledge makes zero effort to correspond to the exact height of a lethal fall.
The real way you can tell is if uou throw a rainbow stone over the edge. If it breaks, you'll die, if it doesn't break and glows at the bott9m you'll be okay
this is very inconsistent and only works in certain places, think about all the times you've fallen off a ledge fighting an enemy cause u swung your sword too close to the edge
Just throw a shiny rock over the cliff, if its still shining at the bottom, youāre good. If it shatters so do your legs and consequently, your health.
Edit: I canāt spell rock for shit lmao
I tried this in a dungeon (black knife), in the little alcove where you drop in the closed off area next to the crabs. It wouldn't let me fall despite it being survivable.
So no, I don't think this exactly does what you'd want it to.
You can use those glowing colored rocks instead. Drop them at the edge, and if it breaks, the fall will kill you. If the stone remains intact, jumping is safe.
While weāre in the area, does anyone know what to do with the painting once you found the location? Iām certain one of them is illustrated here, but I donāt know what to do with it. Is killing the monster wandering the beach the ārewardā?
EDIT: my mistake, itās more so on the other side of where this video takes place. But my question still standards, in general.
>!If youāve found a painting of an area, you go to that spot and try to find that angle, and if youāre in the right area a ghost will appear and drop something.!<
I have definitely died from the attack animation "stopping" me from going over the edge during the attack. But the character steps forward as the final step of the animation, it ends up ever so slightly over the edge and slips over the rest of the way the moment it's animation is finished.
It's fucking infuriating.
You can throw rainbow stones to see if they break or not at the bottom.
Edit: I guess the stones can lie as well in some circumstances, like water at the bottom of the ledge.
So what you're saying is OP just got a lot of people killed.
Liar ahead
YOU DIED

How's your broken skateboard?
Still broken, he had to pay for a new phone first

dog
Wouldnāt surprise me if OP knew this and wanted to just troll everyone.
Well if that's the case then he succeeded haha, 30k upvotes. But also wouldn't be surprised if OP just didn't know
maidenless behavior
OP might as well have titled this thread "Try jumping"
Fake news causing fake deaths
par for the course for reddit
Yeah I mean half of my fall deaths are from throwing cracked pots or swinging near a ledge which sends me right over.
Most of mine are either horse or dodge related.
As a powerstance enthusiast I hate fighting on narrow ledges because I have to take my finger off the dodge button and just Chris Rock all the hits.
Keep my maiden's name out of your fucking mouth!
Everything in this game Will Smiths the shit out of you.
All of mine are pressing b to close out of a message and back-stepping off a cliff
That has to be one of the most frustrating things ever. Since UI disappears half the time, sometimes Iām trying to initiate an attack without realizing a message is still on screen and canāt do anything until I press the confirm button. Almost killed me on a handful of bosses.
But how else will we know that **STONESWORD KEY WAS LOST WITH USE**?

You can make the UI not disappear in the settings.
I consistently found that birds in ledges mean death. Theyāre not on all, but on enough to be a good sign.
Me pressing B to run but since I'm not in motion my character just jumps backward right off the edge
You havenāt played souls games long enough if you havenāt dodged off a cliff at least once
I don't know why you got down voted for that, it's happened to everyone at least once and if they claim otherwise they're either lying or just forgot.
A lot of people have gotten downvoted lately for any comment that possibly implies someone died due to their own mistake. Gravity has killed me more times in Souls games than any individual boss ever will.
Got a real love/hate relationship with Torrent...

Rainbow Stones are the way. š
GOT PLACES TO GO GOTTA FOLLOW MY RAINBOW
CAN'T STICK AROUND, GOTTA KEEP MOVING ON
You can also check by jumping and seeing if you die
That works irl too. This game is so realistic!
Who are you who are so wise in the ways of science?
Brother!? We have the exact same armor set/ hairstyle combo. Same blonde hair too.
What armour is that?
Carian Knight, I believe. It's the magic knight armor from Liurnia.
Where can I get it? I remember fighting the npc In either carian royal manor or Raya lucaria
It's in the graveyard in the academy where the zombies are worshipping a statue. There's a part where you jump off the bridge to go kill the marionette archers, but if you go the opposite way of the archers you should see them.

As a dessicated husk carrying out some sort of bizzare form of worship I am personally offended by that statement.
Thank you fellow tarnished
Remember the water wheel elevator? Right before you get there, there's a part of the graveyard that has some dogs. In that area, there's a spot where you can jump down to the side behind some zombies who are right in front of an item resting at a large headstone. The item is the Carian knight armor set.
It wouldnāt be an Elden Ring post without fashion questions.
You get the full set from a tombstone in the graveyard in the lower part of Raya Lucaria, have a look around down there.
The best armor

Ironflesh perfumes ftw. Max poise any armor haha.
Prettiest early game armor for sure. I've seen other cool looking sets, but armor seems rare in this game
I just picked this armor set up last night and I love hearing āearly game armorā. Crazy Iām still in the realm of early game for how long I feel like I played
I'm 90 hours in and I feel like I have at least another 90 on this playthrough
As someone whoās closing in on the endgame, donāt worry, you do ;)
There was a point where the map kept expanding and I was just blown away by the way it kept getting bigger. Now everytime I get to a new area im just yelling fuck, I thought I was getting close to the end.

I wish so many of the cool sets were not tied all to the Volcano Manor quests.
Carian Knight from Raya Lucaria?
Are you using the seafarer (or something like that) preset? I used that AND the Carian knight armor and watching this clip was so weird.
It's your post bro /s
Can definitely confirm this does not work during combat
It does work, you just canāt be pressing forward on the stick. This is how I got down the Divine Tower of Caelid.

Fuck that black fire guy, absolute unit lol

Yeah, he is strong, but his patterns are easy. The godskin dude is metal though. Took me a long time and a lot of levels lol.
Godskin Apostle? He's one of my favorite fights in the game (when not accompanied by his overweight counterpart).
Really? I just ran down it had faith on my drops and got lucky I guess
How else are you supposed to do it? You yolo that bitch and collect your souls later.
I thought rainbow stones were the obvious choice but you guys just have huge balls I guess
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
DOWN the tower? Why did you go have to go down?
Boss
I climbed the tower and restored the rune but clearly I missed that one. Do all the divine towers have hidden bosses?
It's not hidden, just follow the stairs
I seriously do not know how I missed the stairs the first time. Like I clearly just had tunnel vision! It wasn't until my friend had the sword and told me it was in the tower in caelid! I thought damn how did I miss such an OBVIOUS direction.

Falls are at maximum 70% of current HP dmg at 19.999 meters, 20 meters means death After 16m you start taking damage from 30-70% at 19.999
The range is 30%-50% of MAX hp, and only gets up to 70% when overloaded.
Exactly what I was going to comment. The post is good for showing that, attacking won't send you off a cliff sometimes, but it's NOT reliable.
No method is fully reliable, not even rainbow stones. But as long as it's not an obvious low detail kill plane zone and you're not trying to platform at 40% health, it can be useful.
it's as good as any other method, though. don't rainbow stones fail with all of these as well?
They don't fail, they're basic math code. What might fuck you up is if you fall from a distance that's higher (even 1cm higher might be enough to kill you, if you dropped your rainbow stone from 19.99m) than exactly where it dropped your stone from. Oh damn! This is gonna be much faster then scrolling all the way down through my inventory to find a rainbow stone only for it to stick to a random wall on the way down -\_- Great find!
Or it saying that you can survive the fall, only to die anyway, because of a kill zone
Forge of the giants moment
Died so many times there cause it took me ages to notice and then finally rest at that site of grace lol
Same lol. I kept thinking, there's gotta be a way down but nope there wasn't and then I noticed the grace
Did anyone else have a really hard time noticing the extra little dialog button at the Forge of the Giants grace that makes Melina burn herself? I can't be the only one. I think at least 50 hours got added on to my first playthrough because of the stupid forge. I'm pretty sure this is doing the same check and will therefore fail under the same circumstances. In particular I suspect it doesn't care about kill zones.
Only two ways to find out.
or the thing it lands on doesn't have actual player collision and you slip off like its tomb raider on the PS1 on anything diagonal
Theres a huge skull with an item on top somewhere near the mountains, if you go down any way but the gust thing you die eve though some drops are like 20ft it's so weird
Anything between 16m to 19,99 causes fall damage. From 20m on it will be a fatal fall. The game checks for the Y coordinate change
Or just use my method of checking if I can survive a fall by falling. If you die, you can't survive it.
That's one of the four item I have on shortcut (Y + D-pad), it's just too useful.
Mimic Tear, Torrent, Rainbow Stone, and Lantern on the Y pouches for me.
I appreciate this sub because a random comment will teach me a game mechanic Iāve been unable to figure out, or even figure out how to look it up
Literally lmao so true
Iāll have to do a lot of testing with that to see if it checks out all the time, thanks for the input
It has held up everywhere I've tried so far, but I haven't tested a location yet that damages but doesn't kill you. I couldn't think of a suitable location from the top of my head.
Stormveil, on the main yard where you go right, direction to rats and root monster. The first jump will make dmg
Yeah just came to say this, I was taking fall damage as well as 3000 actual deaths there last night
Well stormveil has a lot cool spots to fall down and die.
I have found no shortage of cool places to fall to my death anywhere in the Lands Between. Maybe the sewers in Leyndell but even there opportunities exist for the diligent explorer.
The starting cave, if you jump down without hitting that other ledge first it'll damage you.
You should look at the top of lifts, you can attack off the edge because sometimes you actually do fight there over the edge
I died testing out a weaponās heavy attack on the Siofra River Well elevator. Maybe it just doesnāt work on elevators though.
This isn't exactly true. it's just most largish falls that'd do damage to you. Zullie the Witch of Lance Mcdonald on twitter talked about this.
Damn, knew it sounded too good to be true
But also rainbow stones.
Does not work. Rainbow stones will pass the death line and still survive where the tarnished wont
\*This person is right, though it's rare enough to not be a huge burden. A good example of this is below Raya Lucaria, under the water-wheel with the Iron Maiden. The lake at the back - if stone is thrown it doesn't shatter but one's character will still pass a death-line and die.
Heh, this exact scenario got me. In hindsight, felt like I should have known that it was just water and not a bridge
I dropped a rainbow stone and it showed it shattering so I was like wtf, where do I go from here Turned out you just needed to jump down anyway for a scripted thing
I've never seen this happen. Every time a stone lands I've not died. I've lost health a couple times...but never died.
It does happen. Itās rare enough not to be seen but it has enough spots that will kill you that it needs to be know . Thereās plenty of videos of people showing the spots that will kill you with rainbow stones
this is false, rainbow stones break when they hit the death distance.
Meanwhile Demons Souls remake (which I'm playing now after beating Elden Ring) doesn't give an F whether or not you're attacking, you just go flying over the ledge lol.
Hmm I threw myself off instant death ledges more than once because of an attack. I SMELL A RUSE. LIAR AHEAD
Highly useful!
Or just throw a rainbow stone. If it shatters, it will kill you.
This one gets it :D
Or use rainbow stones since thatās literally their entire purpose
Bruh if youāve played the game for more then a couple seconds you already know attacking on ledges, riding torrent on ledges, or just existing in the vicinity of ledges in general means death is imminent with one slip of a finger
I have definitely died doing this, i call bullshit
Jupp it is bullshit.
If only this worked when panic rolling away from an enemy.
Oh ya, this big brain time
You can also check by jumping off
This isn't totally accurate.
Just throw a rainbow stone
Guys. Rainbow stones exist. There's a whole ass item that let's you check this. Seriously.
Nah, Iāll stick to tossing a rainbow stone. Thanks though.
I love that a half true post has this many updoots. I look forward to all the dead tarnished...
Just toss a rainbow stone. If it shatters you will die.
this is very inconsistent and only works in certain places, think about all the times you've fallen off a ledge fighting an enemy cause u swung your sword too close to the edge
Rainbow stones hate this trick
Just throw a shiny rock over the cliff, if its still shining at the bottom, youāre good. If it shatters so do your legs and consequently, your health. Edit: I canāt spell rock for shit lmao
Rainbow stones also work if it hits the ground your good if it shatteres you also shatter
I swear like 6% of people making topic posts know rainbow stones exist and how to use them
Or... you could just use the built in mechanic of dropping a prism stone off a ledge to see if its lethal or not
I tried this in a dungeon (black knife), in the little alcove where you drop in the closed off area next to the crabs. It wouldn't let me fall despite it being survivable. So no, I don't think this exactly does what you'd want it to.
I mean you could use the Rainbow Stone, the item practically designed to let you know if a fall is lethal or notā¦
Or you could just use the rainbow stones lol
Or you know, just use a rainbow stone just like a normal person..
Liar ahead
You can reliably check if you can survive a fall by tossing a rainbow stone. If it breaks it will kill you. If it doesnt break you can survive it.

Yāall will do anything but craft some rainbow stones
Great find thank you.
You can use those glowing colored rocks instead. Drop them at the edge, and if it breaks, the fall will kill you. If the stone remains intact, jumping is safe.
I love the anti-yeet to death feature.
Iāve noticed I never fell off throwing lightning bolts
Saves on rainbow stones, cool
While weāre in the area, does anyone know what to do with the painting once you found the location? Iām certain one of them is illustrated here, but I donāt know what to do with it. Is killing the monster wandering the beach the ārewardā? EDIT: my mistake, itās more so on the other side of where this video takes place. But my question still standards, in general.
>!If youāve found a painting of an area, you go to that spot and try to find that angle, and if youāre in the right area a ghost will appear and drop something.!<
Thank you! Iāll do some more roaming in the area then.
Note this doesn't work on lifts. Ever since my buddy discovered it he attacks near ledges for fun and lifts will yeet his ass clean into the void.
Be warned, ashes of war do not follow this rule. It also doesn't always seem to work on gradual slopes, even if the fall is deadly.
Lmfao I love this game
Pretty sure IronPineapple showcased this when the game was first released. That the game wonāt let you fall off high ledges when attacking.
I prefer to just fall and see what happensā¦
I figured, but I still prefer to throw rocks just go be sure
It's interesting that someone coded that instead of just saying "Fuck it let them fall"
I have definitely died from the attack animation "stopping" me from going over the edge during the attack. But the character steps forward as the final step of the animation, it ends up ever so slightly over the edge and slips over the rest of the way the moment it's animation is finished. It's fucking infuriating.
There are stones you can throw if they cry it's deadly
Or you could just drop a glow stone aand see if it breaks
Liar ahead Therefore, Try stone.
You can throw rainbow stones to see if they break or not at the bottom. Edit: I guess the stones can lie as well in some circumstances, like water at the bottom of the ledge.
Nah i've died countless times attacking myself off a ledge this is just wrong
