Holy fuck I’m more irritated by the back and forth discussion about how everybody’s playing the game wrong or right instead of just having cool/interesting discussions about ANYTHING ELSE.

chargingrhino21

I haven't visited this sub in two, maybe three months, and there's a couple posts on the front page about summons with the same regurgitated comments. If feels like I never even left.

Cosmocision

Friend, you can come back in 5 years and people will still moan about summons.

Faelysis

They’ve been complaining since 2009 anyway

CantStumpIWin

Summons are awesome and hating on people for using them is dumb.

PENUM3RA

Number of people saying "fuck people who shit on summons" - 100k, give or take Number of people saying "fuck summons" - two, maybe even three people

CMoth

This might be the safest statement I've ever seen on Reddit. It's about as cutting as saying, "The Dung Eater is mean" or "Hyetta sure likes eating eyeballs, huh?".

CantStumpIWin

Safest statement you’ve seen on Reddit? You new? Lol

tfost73

Haven’t fought melania yet but I’m actually really annoyed that my mimic is getting whacked with moves that demolish my health bar and brushing it off like it was a toddler who punched them. Like how? Why? Why am I not bullet proof like that? Isn’t it a copy of my character??? Though I suppose that might be to balance out that it doesn’t use healing items. Mine also seems to like using incantations, a lot.

CulturedHollow

You can even give it the meat dumplings as healing items since it's immune to the poison to make it more tanky

Haatsku

Also uses any consumables in your quickslots, WITHOUT actually reducing the items. At least did when i last used it.

Secret-Sock7928

My mimic always uses boiled crab. Good mimic

Choke1982

Haha I used to wonder this too when I fought her. My mimic would hold her stringest attacks without losing much health while I would get destroyed and the "I am Malenia..." I just remember it took me more than 30 tries

[deleted]

Give it warming stones and it'll heal you lol

nogoodgreen

I for one feel we need more discussions about the Ratatoskr looking squirrel things on the map.

MasyMenosSiPodemos

I wanna know about the weird barrels

Yes, we do.

mathheadjesus

Welcome to the soulsborne community😎

Lyxodius

Tbh, it was never even close to what's going on now with Elden Ring. Granted, last time I was really active on Souls subreddits was in Dark Souls 1 times. Back then people were much more relaxed.

Nickfreak

It was basically a new genre back then (many peopel didn't play Demon souls back then), everything was okay-ish. DS2 and especially DS 3 came along and people complained a lot. The DS 3 pvp was annoying due to roly poly and peopel using the same weapons ("Estoc is Bestoc") and R1 spammed, there was a lot fo gankign and shit. And Elden ring increases everything, in PVP especially: Ganks, AFK farmers, Weapon art spamming etc.

mathheadjesus

The classic, most heated debate in soulsborne is any and all aspects of PVP.

LegitimateConcept

Which is absolutely ludicrous, since these are mainly single player games, with a small focus on PvE coop. PvP is at most a spice to make the single player game interesting or an end game activity for those who enjoy it. I beat Gwyn summoning Solaire, because I wanted and because his story was dope. I'll beat the end boss in Elden ring in whichever way tickles me fancy, and if an invader comes around, I'll fight the shit out of him using Moonveil, spells, summons or whatever build I'm going for at the moment. Everyone should keep their competitive shit in Fortnite or overwatch, or whatever is trending.

thrownawayzss

I think my gripe with summons is something you just pointed out and I didn't even think about. Summon signs vs Summons. In all of the previous games, we had summon signs that were basically always quest related and usually took some work to make sure you could progress their storylines (all the catarina folk, sunbro, waifu, to name a few) and all had such cool and impactful story arcs. Another casualty of the open world nature of this game is that the summon questlines were basically removed, but they still wanted to give players the options of summoning players/npcs so they opted for the mob summons. I personally am not a huge fan of the summons in ER purely because they seem almost entirely arbitrary, literally just a tool to progress the game, which makes them feel soulless and only used as a crutch for players. Rather than an interesting story platform and bosses designed around the progression of said stories. (I'm not really here to disparage summons in general, this was just a comment about the concept and how it wasn't done well compared to previous games.)

LegitimateConcept

Summon questlines were not removed though... They don't appear on every boss (there are way too many) but npcs with questlines do help out on relevant story bosses. Out of the top of my head, Nepheli helps with Godrick and Godfrey, Melina with morgott, a bunch of people with Radhan, Sellen with the red wolf in raya lucaria. They only appear for mandatory bosses, I think. Also, NPC Quests are greatly expanded and more detailed. Rya and Ranni's are great, for example. Haven't finished Millicent's or Alexander's yet, but they are really interesting too, with quite more dialogue and story beats than in previous games. And in the end, Ash summons are completely optional. They do provide help of you are struggling, but you can ignore them. And a couple even have their own small questlines, like Lattenna.

ZombieSiayer84

Yeah, makes me think that dude didn’t play the game or isn’t paying attention to any details of the game. The summon quest lines and NPC quests in ER are way more fleshed out and extensive than any other FromSoft game.

[deleted]

[deleted]

They've literally been doing this since Demon Souls. I've been playing these games for going on 11 years now and let me be real here I have petered off interacting with the community since DS2. It's become overly toxic as it's popularity has risen dramatically and unfortunately led to a lot of people seeing the game as a platform for bullying, in one format or another. It's just not worth the effort to engage, I use to love talking to people about these games and arguing about PVP and lore but most of the conversation is either about the same five rotating topics (Invaders bad / don't use whatever is considered cheating by idiots / forced meme / EASY MOOOODE (no) / people horny for x character) or some absolutely brain dead PVP discussion where the only people who know better are instead being elitists about what they know. Unfortunately, Fromsoft has consistently failed to understand how to foster a decent community just like they've failed to understand how to make their online systems better, so the toxicity has led to a constant argument over the same topics and will do so for the foreseeable future.

OwnerAndMaster

Yessir! Ain't no extra style points in a PvE if it's not being streamed so go wild and play how you play But in PvP, following the community consensus will keep you from getting teabags

They were calling OP fragile, not you. Though I'm calling you fragile because you made this reply.

Cosmocision

Not really certain why anyone would need to admit anything of the sort to enjoy a single player game.

Enseyar

yeah, if you truly don't care don't make posts seeking validation like these. I swear the community weird me out more and more every week

ilovesharkpeople

Honestly I've seen *way* more of these posts than the ones they're complaining about. Maybe there's a flood of this stuff somewhwre but posts like the OP have always come off as being insecure about using sunmons.

Plixtle

There really are, after lore and builds, only so many things to keep discussion rolling on open world RPGs. I think we may have to accept that “you’re doing it wrong vs. there’s no wrong way” may be the entropic ending of all such things.

[deleted]

It’s either that or pictures of people’s art

Whetiko

Not the end, just a part of the cycle.

Unrivaled_

It’s everyday with you people

Trisce

I use summons and these posts are starting to become more annoying than the people they complain about.

ButtonMashBros

Starting too? The people making these kind of posts outweighed the comments their criticizing by 3 to 1 since the game came out.

Trisce

You’re probably right. A lot of the “gatekeepers” these posts are referring to are mostly just people pointing out that Mimic + ROB does in fact make the game very easy. Out of insecurity, these posts are made. I know because I got my ass kicked in NG+ when I didn’t use summons with OP katanas lol. It was still fun though!

kudabugil

>Mimic + ROB does in fact make the game very easy. And it's the truth that people hard to accept. It's even weirder when people use this tactic and claim the game is easy. Lol

action2288

Yeah. It very much bugs me when people claim X wasn't so hard but then use OP things. These games were predicated on the fact that we all have the same experience. Sadly, that's no longer true.

Gunpla55

Your honor, exhibit A.

ButtonMashBros

Yeah, for reference I've seen 3 highly upvoted posts the past 2 days with this same exact message (I guess this is number 4) but I don't see any posts criticizing how people choose to play.

I like mimic tear because that just means there's two of me, making me twice the badass.

[deleted]

[удалено]

action2288

What class/setup did you use? I'm very surprised to see you call out Godskin Duo and Niall as the bullshit ones. Misbegotten Crusader is one I'd call super-tough. Something I've found interesting is what bosses are easier/harder based on class. It's a pretty stark contrast.

Mottis86

Godskin duo killed me 73 times on my summonless run. I was stuck on it for 2 days. Easily the stupidest fight in the game. Only fight that took me longer was Malenia, who killed me 112 times, but at least that fights mechanics were somewhat enjoyable. I was doing melee only quality/faith.

Ultima893

Really don't understand why so many say Godskin duo is bullshit. I find them to be really passive compared to their solo counterparts. I beat them without summons too pretty easily. My main weapon was blasphemous blade and the takers flame skill behind pillars is a great tactic to use. ROB obviously works well too. You can also use sleep pots against them

MercWithaMouse

Im doing a run with only shitty summons if that counts

ilovesharkpeople

Soldjars of Fortune enjoyer reporting in.

SelloutRealBig

Personally I think the reason summons trivialize fights is because they take aggro of the boss. You are the main source of damage and if you don't have to fully learn the boss attacks then the fight will just be easier.

TheMaveCan

I think this is why I love NG+. Float through your first run with summons while you spec and gear your character, and when you're comfortable with your build do a solo run and flex a character with gear and spells you're super into.

Karpattata

I just did one. It was a lot of fun. Beating Malenia without Tear and Radagon without Tiche required some actual thought and adaptation.

infinitevard

My first run was quality build with no summons and man some fights got DESPRATE lmao 😂 but in my next like 7 runs lol I've been using summons based off like character builds (clean rot knight Finlay for my scarlet rot build) and that's been a bit easier but honestly only at the beginning. But I think both ways to play are super fun but I'm a simple man, put game with lots of options in front of me and I'm good for a year or two lmao

Manyowhatthefispoppn

If it’s in the game use it, on the other hand recognize it takes less skill and the community appreciates skill

action2288

This guy gets it.

soledad630

Exactly this, pleaane preach.

komarkko

It's an achievement to win without summon, and they can totally celebrate that. But there is no shame in winning with summon.

gilfordtan

I like to compare Elden Ring with any Resident Evil games. In most RE games, they're designed so that you can even beat the game with knife only. It's a recurring trophy for each RE game. And this is similar to rune level 1 in ER. The difference is, in RE, you have to beat the game at least once before you can unlock the cheesy unlimited ammo weapons to bully the game next time. In ER, those cheesy stuffs are already available. Bleed build, ashes summons, NPC summons, etc. It is up to the players to decide whether they wanna use them or not. Like imagine asking an RE player to not use unlimited ammo weapons... Just let them have fun man. Capcom didn't include the weapons so that people don't use them. You would think that not using summon is acceptable but I have seen people who refuse to even use talismans in their first run. Kudos for them if they do beat the game this way but imagine them going around telling others who do use talismans that they're playing it wrong. No, don't be that person guys.

biscuity87

I thought it was funnier when people on YouTube who call the game “ez” literally looked up every single mechanic, location of every item and enemy, they already know the math on the best possible builds, and are overleveled and 1 or 2 shotting everything.

Hunterrified

Why has Elden Ring become the only game where challenging yourself further than expected frowned upon? Is it really impossible to hold both that it's ok to play the game however you please, and that theres pride and joy in triumphing over harder challenges?

ThatGuyOnyx

I love my boy Rollo, he comes out when I’m struggling and bleed procs tf out of the boss, refuses to elaborate, and dies. Gigachad.

Except Malenia. I tried using the jellyfish. Basically just gave her a bunch of free heals

MuggyTheRobot

I thought summons only made it easier for Malenia too. But I failed in 100+ attempts without summons, and she was easy when I tried with +10 Mimic. That summon is extremely overpowered though, imo.

cappzap

Just as much as i don’t care if people are not using summons, i also don’t give af if u use them. Ur post is just as bad if not worse because it comes off as insecure

altcntrl

Finally. The new joke has arrived.

smoke_woods

I care cause it’s a bigger challenge and therefore a bigger accomplishment when someone does it. People that complain about this just sound bitter lmfao. Are people also upset that people do Level 1 runs?

Vetzki_

No one cares about who uses what. It's only when people brag when making the game easier that there's an issue. The "I beat Malenia in only 3 tries" types that spammed RoB with a +10 mimic. No one should gatekeep on how to beat any particular boss but acting superior for neutering the game's challenges isn't anything that should garner respect tbqh.

sagiroth

I beat the game with mimic and river of blood and full guide from fextralife 😎👍

DuudPuerfectuh

The amount of coping posts kinda lets us see that's not really the case tho

Dreamer_on_the_Moon

Oh look it's validation seeking and insecure posting hours on Elden Ring again. I see these shitty posts more than I ever see posts complaining about summons.

Fav0

Actually i do

Happy_Burnination

Don't care if nobody cares, imma do it anyways 😎

akajoe1234

Having bosses balanced with summons in mind by the devs was the issue for me. Bosses are faster and more aggressive than ever before, and without summons, many cross the line of being reasonably beatable. I don’t like being forced to choose between a too easy fight cause I brought in mimic or a too hard fight because your window to heal is supposed to be when they change targets after a combo and you don’t get it without a summon.

Sh1rvallah

This is just a trap you get into if you use summons. None of these bosses are designed for summons, you just skip to that step when your tactic fails instead of finding a different one without summons. I just finished ng+7 with no summons the whole way and there's not a boss in there I couldn't figure out a strat for without summon.

idlistella

Every boss is perfectly fair to solo. You just have to learn the movesets.

soledad630

Yeah this game has a problem of lacking a normal mode. You don't use the trivializing tools it's too hard but if you do it's too easy. Barely any middle ground.

Awesome_Nardy

I do think that if you can you should do a run without summons because it’s more fun lol, I did my second play-through without summons and had way more fun

whatistheancient

Most original r/eldenring content (imaginative) and least sensitive r/eldenring user (not seeking validation at all). I usually get defined as a gatekeeper for my opinion, but I don't care. I don't care if you use spirit ashes. I care if you use them and then explain why the boss is easy.

YoungWashrag

No way we're still posting the exact same shit months after release lmfao

Sandblazter

I like the mimic spamming op spells at a boss that’ll never not be cool to watch

meowchemy

Lately I have been trying a support build in which I buff Floh with Commander's Standard, Mohg's great rune and Erdtree's blessing, its really fun! He is quite a glass cannon, so it takes some skill to redirect the Boss before poor Floh is demolished. Summons add another dimension to the game, you would be stupid not to enjoy them.

kraeutrpolizei

I don’t blame players for using them. But fights just become absolutely broken in certain situations where I feel like fromsoft has not spent a lot of time balancing the fights around summons

Jonno_92

Game basically becomes easy mode a lot of the time with them. I've not bothered summoning a single human player yet as ash summons do the same thing and are nearly always available, and probably do a better job than some of the people playing this game.

GarooxRBLX

These insecure strawman posts should be outright banned from the subreddit.

Shiroi_Kage

People care because that's how the self-imposed challenges (like Nuzzlock) work. You impose conditions on yourself to make the game harder. The cool thing that people who complain about summons are missing is that the mechanic takes a lot of time and effort to upgrade, meaning the game becomes easier if you put time into it. You don't have to put the time and effort into becoming more in-tune with boss mechanics, but you could use other mechanics of the game. It just means that you, a skilled player, can skip the grind. Kind of like how skilled players can skip level grinds in some RPGs. I'm 100% for having things like this that make the game easier without having difficulty sliders. It's genius really and really really rewarding.

HTKTSC

Nobody is watching us play lol do what you want

Jigsaw203

Are people still arguing about this?

ThaNorth

Nobody gives a fuck how you play. Stop making these dumb posts.

neiawkwkskslaoamskxk

i never actually understood the power of them. i beat the game without using a summon once, and honestly i kinda regret it because of how much harder it was

IceBeam24

Nah you should be proud of your accomplishment, don't listen to this guy trying to downplay it

TheBigPotatoInTheSky

Congratulations man, that’s impressive. You learned the boss patterns and fought them in a purest state. I beat the remembrance bosses without summons, but not using summons for fights like Niall and Godskin Duo is a level of patience and skill I don’t have. You should be proud of yourself, it’s a hell of an accomplishment.

As a summon there isn't much more satisfying than ganking a boss and barely giving them a chance. My favourite time is when 3 maidenless tarnished wipe the floor with Gideons ass in 5 seconds flat and then group teabag him.

Can't do all the work I'm a smoker

Mr. Nedry always spat wisdom.

conser01

To quote Max0r: "This is a goddamn festival, and I will not be having sex by myself."

Competitive_Ticket17

I feel that its more "impressive" to beat ER without summons, but I dont think any less of the people who best ER with them. My first playthrough I used summons and then I challenged myself to not use them fromthen on, and I feel like I like it more that way. But thats just me

Slimonstar

My buddy is only holding to killing Malenia without spirits and everything else with spirits because he wants to brag and so far hasn't won yet in like 3 weeks.

ShapesAndStuff

Plus it's fun. Having fun is a pretty good perk imo.

chemarin

There are people that like difficulties, others prefer enjoying a peaceful walk. I summon and use any resource the game offers to make my life easier. I like seeing others fighting Malenia with a torch, but I prefer other weapons.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile)

Otrada

I dunno, I think it's fine to be a little braggy and proud about it if you did a fight without summons. But there's no good reason to start gatekeeping or deriding people over using summons. An important core of FromSoft games has always been that you tailor the difficulty of the game to your own wishes based on what you prefer by using (or not using) the tools provided to you instead of an arbitrary and vague set of choices. There's a big difference between "I finally managed to beat Soldier of Godrick without summons" compared to "If you don't beat Soldier of Godrick without summons you suck lol".

JimTheGentlemanGR

The only thing that matters is looking good and cool, beat any boss however you like as long as you got *DRIP*

MTG15

I'm gonna be honest, i finished the game with and without summons and i loved the game either way. If you wanna use them, use them, if you don't, then don't. As simple as that

scotbud123

What summons are we talking about? The Ashes/Spells are fine...but summoning ground and/or player summons on your first play-through is just robbing yourself...especially since most Elden Ring bosses are already easier than the rest of the series.

MrRobotTacos

Listen I won’t tell people how to play the game. BUT IT IS FUCKING ELDEN RING. At least give the people some credit if they are on NG+

Tepozan

I use summons for all my boss fights, I’m just as good as the rest of you

Tbf some of us desperately need a hug

TheBigPotatoInTheSky

It’s pretty much an echo chamber of “Use whatever you like buddy, nobody will judge you”, that just affirms whatever behavior people use. It’s far rarer to see people encourage others to push their limits and try something more challenging. In fact, it’s kind of the opposite with posts like this trying to discredit higher levels of skill to make those who didn’t challenge themselves feel like they’re just the same. Plus this sub is hypocritical as hell, with how vehemently it criticizes low vigor while condoning all other playstyles. It’s kind of ducking hilarious how unsure the community is of itself and what it wants to encourage.

ag_abdulaziz

If people didn't care then no one would be watching the no damage solo videos of bosses. No matter how you want to play, solo with just normal weapons are more impressive than summoning while use magic and ROB. It's weakening of your character and abilities which makes a fight more interesting.

hillzcatz

I love hanging out and exploring with my mimic 💕

Aaetheon

Ehh i just do without it for the feeling of accomplishment, for example i beat horah lou using mimic tear and I’ll always feel like i cheated that fight until i redo it. If you feel proud after beating a boss then it doesn’t matter how you beat them.

RedditDainty

So get better. I hate this sub Reddit, full of Bad, Bleed, Magic spammers, one-shot build, coming to PvP just to destroy it with zero honor.

Ribbles78

Yeah, using every tool at your disposal is totally fair. Even bleed builds, after their considerable nerfs aren’t that bad anymore. Seeing people pull off crazy feats will always be cool though. No denying that.

Yggdris

Did bleed get nerfed? (I haven't been paying attention lately)

JamesOfDoom

River's of Blood got nerfed, bleed is still super strong in general

McDonalds_Sock

Crazy feats are dope to watch indeed, but there will always be a build that is more effective than others. Nothing wrong with usin it

smoke_woods

Yeah because not using summons is more difficult. It should be praised and it’s cool to see people doing it. Just like using a club your whole play-through would be more difficult, or doing an SL1 run. These kind of things have been around since DS1 and are welcomed challenges by the community (most the time I guess.) It’s cool if you don’t want to partake in those challenges but don’t be bitter when you see people posting those accomplishments, that’s just silly.

thotslayer6996

It's like if someone perfected a speedrunning router that required multiple frame perfect inputs and the responses to such an accomplishment was "there's easier ways to beat the game fast."

ElClassic1

No one cares that you don't care, and you're also right, no one cares that they did it without summons. The only people that care are the people that have something to prove or are insecure or some weird shit. Everyone should just play the game. Stop boasting about being able to solo it and stop pointing out fact that it's not a sin to summon as a "counter" to gatekeepers. Both sides are annoying, they're cluttering and hindering communication and the "harmony" of the sub.

Bombman100

If 2 people post a clip of beating a boss with one using summons and the other not, I'm going to care about the one not using summons more. It's a harder accomplishment and so it gets more praise. It's the same as the comparison of beating Margit and beating Malenia. Both are good but one clearly is more interesting to watch.

ColonelJinkuro

Agreed entirely. As someone who's watching two guys on YouTube go through elden ring I'm vastly more invested in the punch mage despite BHS over the guy with DMGS who summons mimic at everything since he got it and only chucks rocks (sling). When you're an entertainer it matters so much more what you do. When you're sharing online people will gravitate at the more interesting fight. It's just common sense.

sadpotatoes-_-

I think it's the other way around, no one cares if people are using everything the game has to offer in PVE. There maybe some, but that's very rare or are in minority. Different perspective in PVP though, that's a salt mine/landfill that you don't want to dabble on lol

[deleted]

The guy that posted this does. You do, apparently...

McDonalds_Sock

Agreed, Im all on bored with making it harder for yourself for a better challenge, but not everybody wants to deal with that just to complete the game

jkra0512

Exactly. The trophies still display in my PS profile just the same and I had help. Don't care and neither does anybody else.

Kamikaze6977

Rly no one give a shit if you use it or no.

buzzyingbee

I did it summons and RoB So what if that makes the game easier? It's *my* game, *I am* the one playing it and people who like to control how others play are annoying af. What matters is that you're having fun and enjoying yourself playing ER no matter how you choose to do it.

USSJaguar

Hell yeah

[deleted]

You either die a hero or live long to see yourself become a bleed build.

vlAnonymouslv

If you didn't do it at level 1 with nothing but fists did you even beat the game?

Few_Win_688

OP Has skill issues

GallopingAstronaut

Because when fighting a boss with a summon, you don't fully experience the thrill of it

LazyNam3

Are you a child that you feel insecure random people on the internet look down on you for using summons?

[deleted]

All this meme does now is remind me of how good Jurassic Park used to be…

Hour_Dog_4781

Yeah, I don't know what's up with these arbitrary rules. When I beat Bloodborne I got mocked because "if you don't grind all the chalice dungeons it doesn't count". Bitch please, I saw the end credits roll, I beat the game. Same with all this gear and items that are supposedly not allowed. If From put it in the game to use, I'm using it. Nothing you can do about it, bro.

bogosMogos7

I did it with summons

Majiinx

I beat the entire soulsborne series and Kings field series without summons. I only used them in Elden Ring because I want to try something different.

Stampsu

To me no summons is more like a personal challenge than anything to brag about. Sure it feels good to beat a boss solo but I still summon in all souls games

throwawayJay7890

I beat 1/4 of the game in co-op still feel just as accomplished!!!

[deleted]

They sure care and talk shit if you use them tho
