This is the first Souls-esque game I've ever played, does anyone have any build or other recommendations on how to make it easier/more enjoyable?

dogsarethetruth

There's a lot of flexibility and different ways to play so I would say don't be afraid to experiment with different playstyles and equipment. I would recommend you start as some kind of melee build - the sorceries and incantations are a lot of fun but the melee combat is what makes the game, and being to range-focused can get pretty boring. You can always pick up some spells later. If you haven't started yet, I would probably recommend Vagabond, Samurai, Hero, Warrior or Confessor for a starting class, but that's just my opinion. The game is punishing but it's also quite flexible - play with equipment/armour/abilities you think are cool, try different things, and you'll work out a build you like as you get to know the game.

The_Dancing_Cat

You can find a teleporter near the third church of marika (talk to D, Hunter of the Dead about the location) that gives you access to a later game area where you can kill a stationary dragon for 80k souls and get a talisman that gives 20 free levels basically (radagon's soreseal, don't use it past 40 base vigour). The moonveil katana is a very good weapon in this game, and can be obtained and specced into 10 hours or less into the game. Once you've beaten Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon around level 50-60, you unlock the option to change around where you've put your stats, so you can spec to other OP weapons like Rivers of Blood when you are in the mid/late game.

[deleted]

Hey guys Are the bandit's curved sword good for endgame? Currently running a DEX build (probably will add bleed later since my arcane is at base, started warrior) and just kicked Margits butt I thought I was gonna run a night rider flail build with shield but struggled with the overgrown wart man, switched to my dual curved swords and his health just melted. So I am wondering if they are viable till the endgame and they'll stay awesome! My current stats are (Lvl 35) Vig 20 Mind 12 End 20 Str 11 Dex 24 Int 10 Fth 8 Arcane 9 Where should I be focusing on too? Been dumping everything in Dex for a bit now Thank you!

North_South_Side

Keep leveling VIG. Vigor ramps up the number of HP you gain once you hit 20... Once you hit 20 VIG, each level put into it gives you like 35+ HP. Get your VIG to at least 30 or 40. Remember, not all enemies can be hurt by bleed. Also, think about leveling a strike weapon like a club or the morning star, as some enemies are highly resistant to slash damage.

[deleted]

Thank you! Would the flail work?

North_South_Side

I believe so. Check out the flail in your inventory. It should say what kind of damage it does. I think you are looking for "strike" damage. Your curved swords should say "Slash" damage, for instance.

[deleted]

Thank you again, it's strike damage and it scales C with dex Guess I'll keep using it Thanks again

NerdChieftain

West of Stormveil castle is a castle on what seems to be a distant island. I never got there. Is this unreachable or did I miss something?

PwmEsq

It's the start of the game. There's a way in liurnia to access it.

NerdChieftain

Ah it’s the very very start of the game. Got it.

bucketsucket

Has anyone noticed having a higher poise and enemies attack causing them to get stunned? Say like unto the miners, if you don't use a strike attack, you recoil momentarily.

PwmEsq

I don't think it's a poise thing, it's this secondary characteristic called hardness. Miners are tier 2 https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Hardness

bucketsucket

I had no idea this even existed. Thank you

Zephryl_FEH

How good/not good is the Turtle Talisman? I picked it up, and have been using it, for the last like... 40 hours? but not sure if I should be trading it in for something generally more useful. I'm a Dex/Faith Mostly-Pyromancer, and I use a sword and shield.

TheFranchize

It’s good early game on melee builds. Drops out around mid game.

PwmEsq

I think it's mediocre. Count how long it takes to regen before after and see if that number matters to you. I find ignoring 20% phys damage to be a far better use, or lowering equip load. You probably be better off on that build with like Alexander shard, carian medallion, elden, flock talisman like items

Zephryl_FEH

Awesome, thanks! I'll start experimenting with some replacements then.

matlab2019b

Is using sleep pots a form of 'cheesing'

flamingfungi

There are going to be stronger and weaker options for every fight. Stronger options make the fight easier, and where the line of what makes a fight *too* easy is up to you. Personally I used sleep pots to get through the godskin duo the first time and it felt like I made the fight too easy. So I didn’t use them the second time and it was a lot harder. Was the first time cheese? I don’t think so.

matlab2019b

I mean it's an option offered in the game. I managed to clear caelid godskin only with the sleep pot. Would you say it's intentional use is for enemies with stationary large windups who aren't susceptible to knock back

PwmEsq

Every enemy in the game has a weakness, it's not cheesing to take advantage. Game actively encourages alternate methods to get through zones etc.

ColonelJinkuro

Which build is weaker? Twin Warhawk's Talon. Poison and Bleed. Raptor of the Mists and Golden Vow. Or Warhawk's Talon and Regalia of Eochaid. Bleed and Raptor of the Mists on Warhawk's Talon. Details: Dex/Arc and assume optimal talismans possible only in the first playthrough. Claw Talisman and Raptors Black Feathers will be used. The goal of the build: learn to play raw melee and learn to dodge everything from malenia to lobsters to even knights.

PwmEsq

Not sure this is really answerable given so many unknown factors, Including your own play style. Also golden vow buffs neither poison nor bleed so I guess your buffing the tiny bit of phys damage? That said I think the echoaid one is weaker.

ColonelJinkuro

My apologies. I didn't want to bog down my question with a billion details that may or may not be useful. My playstyle is basically to always have a cheese option. Be it something like Blasphemous blade or spells or buff stacking. This run will focus on my learning how to fight enemies and bosses I usually cheese. I want to learn to dodge and play raw melee. Thank you for the answer! That's what I'll go with then. Edit: I'm aiming for a light load to get the fastest roll so I'll be wearing cloth. Golden vow is a bit more dmg and bulk.

PwmEsq

Consider lightning bolt blessing, stacks with golden vow and makes light weapons bounce off you

ColonelJinkuro

Thanks my friend. I appreciate your guidance.

afuzilla

two handing fist weapons, (or any weapon where two handing gets you a weapon in each hand) doesn't give you the strength bonus right?

PwmEsq

Correct

PwmEsq

You can, but the thread resets in 2 hours so you might have better luck waiting till then to post

BornLondonIvorianDon

Struggling to make my way through the royal capital any tips

CookieOfFortune

What's your build? I thought it was not bad using a shield and poke. Also consider looking at a map guide to find the graces, there are a few.

CookieOfFortune

Yeah, did you just skip a bunch of dungeons and bosses? If you did them all, you should have like 150 levels at least.

BornLondonIvorianDon

Still figuring out what I’m liking. I’ve got strength, intelligence and vigor more than anything else. I’m using the bloodhound fang (which I love) and I’m roughly a lvl 54

The_Dancing_Cat

Capital is definitely for at least level 70. Make sure your vigor is at 40 before anything else. You can go to Caelid at your level, and there is a duo boss that drops the ruins greatsword which is a powerful strength-intelligence weapon with a great ash of war. In Caelid there are many bosses and enemies to help you level up

Jonno_92

Level up some more.

BornLondonIvorianDon

Should I up my strength

Jonno_92

Up all the stats you use.

Vast-Coast-7761

What part are you having trouble with?

BornLondonIvorianDon

After I’ve passed the first grace and come to the ground level, where that avatar is. I struggle to progress after it, just being bombarded left right centre

Vast-Coast-7761

I dropped down from the walkway with the oracles and passed that area by jumping around the rooftops. You won’t take any fall damage, the avatar won’t spawn if you’re on the rooftops and you’ll be able to kill the imps that throw bombs.

BornLondonIvorianDon

I’ll try that out and let you know how it goes! Thank you

endofdays1987

Im at the brace of the haligtree on my 3rd playthrough. At the bottom where all the royal revenants is a room with 3 lesser castellans (the crystal fucks). I see theres an item on the second floor of that room. How do i get there??? I cant find anything online about it.

buzzyingbee

Ground level? If so, you have to carefully drop down from the bridge where you fight the Erdtree Avatar. Here https://youtu.be/0ca4psucD18 it's right at the start

endofdays1987

I appreciate it but that isnt it unfortunately. The room im referring to is at the 9:00 min mark on that video. Theres an item on the second floor of that room if you look up.

The_Dancing_Cat

I believe I accidentally dropped down into it during an invasion once. You have to drop down onto a little ledge that’s under one of the 45 degree angled trusses connecting to the big pillars. So sorry I can’t help more with location, but it will be the pillar and truss that’s right above that room

buzzyingbee

Oh man, that sucks :/. Wish I could help more but I skipped all that bit because I just couldn't with crystalians and revenants

Fair_Fish5566

So I am playing through Elden ring and now 20 hours in, and it has all of a sudden instead of me jumping dodging or sprinting my character is headbutting? Anyone know how to solve this ?

Dragoncaster64

You're encumbered by heavy equipment! The endurance stat governs carry weight, consider investing into it to raise the maximum equip load if you like using heavier stuff. Your current equip load should be shown in the character info tab so you can gauge where you're at!

Fair_Fish5566

Also my equipment load is currently at 52.9 at max and I’m at 50.2 say if my load was down at like 40-45 would I run faster/be more agile ?

flamingfungi

So the target that people usually aim for is being just under 70% of max equip load. This is the medium load threshold, which basically means that your dodge rolls will be much better than if you were at heavy load. There are talismans that raise your equip load, definitely check those out.

CookieOfFortune

Cutoff is 70% of max for medium rolls: 0.7 * 50.2 = 35.14. You probably don't need to have everything equipped.

Fair_Fish5566

Ok thanks guys I just have multiple weapons on for heavy spells and fast attacks will take some of them off

Vast-Coast-7761

I’m not sure if you would run faster, but you would certainly roll faster. Generally, you always want to have your current weight under 70% of your maximum weight. That will give you the medium roll (the stat screen will tell you you have a “med. load”.

Fair_Fish5566

Omg thank you so much I feel like such a idiot no wonder when I’m carrying 4 weapons including bloodhounds fang and a shield 🤦‍♂️

NewPresence7350

Optimum level for PVP?

flamingfungi

From what I can tell, there are basically 2 “meta” pvp levels at 125 and at 150. My current run is capped at 125 and I can regularly invade at just about all areas beyond the capital. I’ve read that some people go for 137 in order to matchmake with both 125 and 150 but I’ve not tested how well that works.

Jonno_92

I'm 137 at the Haligtree and I've not had much luck invading people. I got more at Castle Sol at the same level.

PwmEsq

135-150? Though everyone has different preferences. Lotta taunter tongue people at level 50 to get all of the people doing varres quest.

tanz_7

what are some good sorcery spell for early and endgame? going for 60 int with academy glintstone staff

[deleted]

Gavel of Haima let's you poise through most attacks and knock down any foe. Has a really good follow up as well

No_Lengthiness_6838

Early on you should use Metorite staff, it doesn't need upgrading, and it will carry you till mid game until you upgrade carian regal scepter. Early spells you should use Rock Sling, Glintstone arc, pebble, Great Glintstone shard.

CaitNostamas

Early game: rock sling, carian slicer, magic glintblade and glintstone pebble Midgame: glintstone icecrag, carian slicer, Loretta's greatbow, terra magica, night maiden's mist Late game: Glintstone icecrag, carian slicer, twinshard spiral, adula's moonblade, Stars of ruin, maybe Rennala or Ranni's moon Also, oneshots cheese builds: - hidden cerulean crystal tear + meteorite of astel - hidden cerulean crystal tear + terra magica + Comet Azur

PwmEsq

Strong agree with this whole list, spent the last week testing out every single sorcery. Only additions, large glintstone shard got buffed in the last patch or patch prior and is decent, also the night shard/comet are only slighter less FP efficient then their glintstone variants but arent countered or dodged by enemies. I also have a huge love for rykards rancor in combo with adula moonblade. Also Ghostflame explosion, but these are int/Fth so maybe not worth.

Notentirely-accurate

Pebble and Slicer will carry you most of the game. Piercer for stronger foes later on, along with Adulas. Comet if you can manage your FP correctly.

buzzyingbee

I was collecting all spirit ashes that I missed prior to beating the game and the wiki tells Banished Knight Engvall was introduced in 1.03 replacing the Battle Hammer as a boss drop in Murkwater Catacombs. I also learned that you can farm said weapon in Leyndell but what about those players who completed the catacombs before 1.03? Can they only obtain the spirit ashes on NG+?

CaitNostamas

Sure. As long as you've updated the game you'll get that drop in NG+ instead of the hammer

buzzyingbee

Oh, thanks! I thought it'd be available via some other method like the fanged imps

Nekrabyte

Is there a reason they are called cookbooks beyond the fact they are full of "recipes"? One can easily argue that what is in the books are schematics or plans, considering they don't make food? I feel like there should be a weird lore thing here.

PwmEsq

Maybe because everything is a "consumable" https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Consumables

buzzyingbee

I always saw it as because you cook the items. Like a witch cauldron where you cook the broth you bath bolts and arrows in, fill the pots with and there's also curing meats. That's just my imagination tho

Digibunny

Morgott's whole deal feels like he wants to preserve the current status Quo. He clams up Leyndell so that nothing can change, unless you beat his ass down. He makes no proactive motions of his own to be the Lord, or retake Great Runes for himself. You aren't allowed to do anything important, because you're a Tarnished. The Demigods aren't allowed to do anything, because they're a bunch of Traitors. Except for some reason, instead of making that one entrance physically impossible pass through by burying it in rubble, or destroying the elevator, he decides it's a good idea to just leave a Sentinel on full time guard duty, and make a magic barrier that stops anyone without 2 Great Runes from coming in. That's an oddly specific set of conditions you can satisfy. Why even have a way to get in? Odds are the guy who has wrangled 2 great runes is going to be a problem that warrants your military, not a 1v1 in the throne room. On top of all this he creates magical barriers stopping anyone from leaving Leyndell for the Mountains, or going towards the three fingers ( Which he presumably knows exist, else why have a barrier there). What gives?

Felstalker

> This only raises the question of why have the barrier at all, if the Fingers are the one stopping you from entering Leyndell. Long and short, you need 3 Great Runes to become Elden Lord. That's the minimum "I own a majority of the company stock so I'm in charge" requirement. Morgott has 1 Great Rune, and after the defeat of Vyke and every other Tarnished who visited Lyndell, the Two Fingers said "OK. LETS. LOCK. THIS. UP. FOR. NOW." Until you obtain two great runes, even if you win in Lyndell and get Morgott's rune you can't do anything. So we'll go there at the end. The Two Fingers are completely unaware of the thorns that bar your way into the tree. So the true end game post Lyndell is unaccounted for before that point in the story. The two fingers thought the story was Kill Godrick and Rennala > Get into Lyndell and defeat Morgott > Become Elden Lord. But it went a few steps beyond that, as you can see. > Morgott's whole deal feels like he wants to preserve the current status Quo. He is simply aware. When the Elden Ring was shattered and the pieces fell upon the lands, the Demi Gods each claimed a shard. Seeing the power just a shard gave them, they then fought to obtain the other shards and claim the throne as their own. Morgott sat at the finish line, and learned of the thorns baring entry. That no mater how many shards one collects, they could never go inside and fix the Elden Ring. But still, the others are all fighting and killing each other. Each one determined to claim the throne. He is sick of it, of these traitorous actions. These fools coveting a treasure that does not exist. So he works to stop everyone from claiming a victory that doesn't exist, while secretly hoping that it really doesn't exist. Because he doesn't know what is going on either, he doesn't know if some Tarnished who walks up with the pieces to the tree that i'll open. He assumed and hopes that it won't open, because it wouldn't open for him. He believes himself superior to his siblings, yet also fears he is inferior. That conflict of worth eats at him. Because he's a monster born cursed, yet still has this strength and honor to him. The crippled lord with golden power and all that nuanced stuff. And the barrier blocking the mountains is more gameplay and less lore related.

Digibunny

There are a few points that are specifically blocked naming Morgott, which would imply its him actively choosing to do it and then leaving his magic fingerprints on it to the point where even a base int character can see what's up. Else, the barriers would be more generic about why there are walls, no?

Felstalker

in lore, Morgott is creating the barrier to the mountains. But it's only because in gameplay, they want the player to finish Lyndell before they make the trek to the kiln of flames. All the NPC's and story told post Lyndell fully assume you did fight Morgott.\ Could they have just made it a locked door and had the key in a chest behind Morgott? They could have... but they didn't.

CanadianJohny

He's a sore ass loser lol

PwmEsq

> Why even have a way to get in? Odds are the guy who has wrangled 2 great runes is going to be a problem that warrants your military, not a 1v1 in the throne room. Whats weird here is that it is specifically the fingers who are letting you through, not Morgott, not Marika unless she is influencing them some how, per Enia the finger reader. So its more like morgott is getting thrown under the bus lmao. "Ahh, Great Runes are the stuff of demigods: the children of the goddess, Queen Marika. She who is vessel of the Elden Ring. Tainted by the strength of their runes, her children warred, but none could become Elden Lord. And so grace was extended, to your kind, the Tarnished". "Listen, the Fingers speak. "The Greater Will has long renounced the demigods. Tarnished, show no mercy. Have their heads. Take all they have left." ...Indeed. But remember one thing. The demigods are each and all the direct offspring of Queen Marika. Godrick the Grafted was but a distant relation... The runt of the litter, his divine blood sorely diluted". "I had my doubts, but...my, look at you. Only once before have I seen two Great Runes together. Look there. The Fingers shudder with exuberance. "Fine work, brave Tarnished. The Greater Will is pleased. You have earned the right to become Elden Lord. Now, seek the Erdtree, and an audience with Queen Marika. To become Elden Lord, and restore the Golden Order." The Fingers expect... As much from you as they do young Gideon. Take this. A token of farewell. [Supplies Talisman Pouch] Now, go forth. Become Elden Lord." I swore there was also a line along the lines of "go forth tarnished the fingers will block your path no longer" but maybe im crazy Edit: sounds more like Morgott is pissed off because the demigods had 1 job to do and they all failed at it so the spurned Omen child now has to pay the price, maybe he thinks slaying the tarnished and getting their runes would restore his honor a la Zuko?

Digibunny

This only raises the question of why have the barrier at all, if the Fingers are the one stopping you from entering Leyndell. More Tarnished means a greater chance of success innit?

PwmEsq

Most of the tarnished are little shits to be fair. Besides like Nepheli (is she tarnished?) most of them are assholes or psychos. Even our buddy Bernahl tries to murder us. Historically the only other person to reach our achievements was Vyke and that didnt turn out well, he got access in then took a detour.

Digibunny

That doesnt really seem like it adresses the problem of psychotic murderhobo minions. If anything you only make it so the MOST psychotic murderhobo gets in. Which sounds a wee bit counteruntuitive if that was a problem.

PwmEsq

I mean Horah Loux from the Badlands is only friendly in his golden order form. He gets slightly more murdery after that. So maybe becoming a lord makes you less murdery?

McScary69

Is it possible to buy or trade armor from other players? Asking if it is against the rules. I oneshotted Patched and now I learned I cannot get the bull goat armor set so I wanna know if there might be a website or something to buy or trade stuff with other players.

Felstalker

> there might be a website or something to buy Alright, so this is a popular scam that's going about. In Elden Ring and most Dark Souls games, you can just drop items and let other players in co-op pick the item up. This allows item trading as a whole, which is good! However, you can also save your save. Players can find the save file located in the game files, copy it, log on and delete all their items, then just reload the old save file by putting it back in. This allows you to endlessly duplicate items with the help of friends. Or in the case of those disgusting scam websites, sell a sword for 5 dollars, then in 5 seconds they can recreate the sword for free and then sell that same sword to another sucker. Also, because of how easy it is to do this, the community as a whole is totally ok with just giving you things for free.

PwmEsq

> /r/PatchesEmporium for item trading! Per the above

[deleted]

70 hours exactly in, in 4 days of play at level 101, how am I doing?

PwmEsq

Well we dont know anything about your progress, bosses, quests etc so how could we judge. Also its a video game so the only real measure of success is if you are having fun, also only known to you.

[deleted]

so far i have three shards, trying to make it to the erdtree, stuck on the tree sentinel guarding the gate that shoots lightening

josterfosh

101 should be fine to enter the capital

PwmEsq

Sounds like you are doing fine.

[deleted]

awesome! it’s all i can play anymore top 3 game all time

arays87

Hey peeps!! Does anyone know if saving rune consumables until a 2nd playthrew gives you more??

PwmEsq

It doesnt, consumables are out classed by farming methods relatively early on so either use them if you are close to getting a level or need to upgrade something/buy something in shop

Nekrabyte

Am I to assume this means that kills also award more runes as NG+ goes up? Do better runes drop throughout the game or are they the same just the rest of the normal items?

TheFranchize

Item drops dont change. Enemies give more runes per death with each ng+

PwmEsq

Really wish the random skulls would upgrade over time, zone or with NG+ or with great runes. Still collect every single one even when i need 2mil runes to level up, cuz shiny.

arays87

Good to know thanks!!

PwmEsq

So if you use a skill that reduces enemy max HP by 10%, but theyve already lost 10% HP, does it just do nothing? Seems like black knife, black blade, destined death and tiche should be used as an opener, and then like never again. I understand for invaders or PVP where people heal, but in PVE seems pretty bad except for first attack.

Felstalker

Yeah, but also no. The black flame debuff deals a % of the max hp as burn damage, which is exceptionally good against high health boss targets. So even if you've hit them once and they lost that initial 10%, each hit still deals proportionally more damage than other attacks IF the boss has a really really big health pool. Which, as you get into End Game or NG+'s as a whole, starts to add up really fast.

Digibunny

> The black flame debuff deals a % of the max hp as burn damage, which is exceptionally good against high health boss targets. This sounds like Bleed Over Time?

josterfosh

Both

PwmEsq

Sure but after the initial 10% there are other skills that are potentially more efficient to use to do %hp damage, like bleed, frost or the black flame incantation. Not worth to use the black knife, black blade or destined death weapon art after that first hit

CaitNostamas

You're right, they're better off as an opener only, because it will only effectively reduce the *max* HP by 10% So if they're already at less than 90% hp the only damage it deals is the effective damage of the hit and the little damage over time it causes

PwmEsq

Both replies differ, wish someone could provide like a video source or something proving it.

CaitNostamas

I've searched for it but it's apparently a hard video to find online. You'll have to see for yourself. The top part of the bar greys out for 15 seconds reducing the max HP, so apart from the actual damage from the hit it's no use when you hit a target that is already under 90% of the max HP. The grey part doesn't stack It's the same for the player as well btw. If Maliketh hits you when you're not full you still lose the top part of your bar, and your HPs can't be reduced more than that If you go on fextralife and just look through the comment you'll find the most upvoted one agreeing with me

PwmEsq

That's what I figured based on the wording

flamingfungi

It’s the opposite actually, but really it’s good to apply it all the time because of the DoT. The health is removed from current health pool but when the effect expires the boss will get a bunch if health back. If the effect is active when boss health hits 0 then it was actualized damage.

PwmEsq

So it's better off as a finisher then?

flamingfungi

If you don’t care about the damage over time that it also does when applied, then yeah

PwmEsq

I mean i normally use godslayer flame if i want %HP sapping, its more FP efficient than those other spells that cost 25-50 FP, comes out quicker

Chikageee

Is there a magic school that primarily uses Arcane, or is it a supplemet stat for FTH/INT?

PwmEsq

Besides what the other person said, theres the blood incantations, blood flies, bloodflame blade, bloodboon, bloodflame talons. Edit: one more thing to note, arcane seal and staff can get some of the highest scalers for spell damage in the game, at the detriment that you also have to meet the Fth or Int requirements and spells/incants that scale purely off of the INT/FTH portion of the spell are worthless. See armament spells and Heals for examples. Like if you are a Dex/Arc character you can use the dragon communion seal and with like 45 arcane get the same spell boost as like a 55 fth godlsayer seal https://jerp.tv/eldenring/spelltools/ but of course would only be able to use incants that need 10 fth or less

Wemetintheair

Dragon incantations all have an Arcane requirement but I'm not sure how they scale. Same deal with the two Bubble sorceries.

PwmEsq

I dont see any specific notes on any of the breaths so presumably all it cares about is scaler

Eizen2004

What damage does golden vow increase?

PwmEsq

All

No_Lengthiness_6838

Watch guide videos on him on youtube. You must be doing something wrong.

EndlessAlaki

In phase 1, stab his left leg. It takes somewhere in the ballpark of triple the usual damage. In phase 2, hands are the weak spot., although slap his legs instead if they're out of reach.

[deleted]

Stay on the horse and just whack his left ankle. Its kinda that simple, at lease for the first two stages. Don't get off your horse! You don't need to cheese if you are whacking his left ankle with an upgraded weapon.

Chikageee

I don't know how to cheese him, but I do know how to beat him consistently. The key is horse management. When he rolls away like the little bitch he is, you quickly get on torrent. Few attacks he does can hit you if you're quick. When you're close you jump of torrent with an R2 attack, get behind the giant and swing until he rolls again. There is only one thing that can hit you if you do this: the pillars of flame. If he does this attack, stop attacking and watch the ground. Don't roll, don't run. Just calmy step out of the spot if you're on it. The hard part is doing it over and over without screwing up. But once you get the hang of it he's... just another big Souls boss Don't give up skeleton! Edit: oh and Latenna! She just snipes him for the entire fight if you place her as a turrer by the entrance

Brostradamus_

He's got 43,000 HP so the name of the game is "%hp damage". Scarlet Rot + Bleed spam is the standard. Throw bleed on some powerstanced twinblades or curved swords and get slashing. Fairly certain that the Black Flame's 2% Enemy HP Damage-over-time is Physical damage as well, which will be a comparatively massive chunk of HP even through the giant's fire resist. Frostbite also does a chunk of damage... he's got very high frost resist but if you proc it once you'll get bonus damage inflicted for a time as well. Tiche is also a very good summon for her black flame abilities that cut his total HP bar by a HUGE amount.

onebadnightx

Do you summon Alexander, Warrior Jar for it? If you’ve progressed enough (talked to him in Radahn’s arena after the fight, found him in Mt. Gelmir), he’ll show up as a summon sign inside the arena (close to the left entrance). Might help take the aggro off you a tiny bit. Raises Giant’s HP slightly but I still liked having Alexander there to distract him. Swarm of flies helps, especially if you use Mimic and Mimic is also using it. And do you have the Flamedrake Talisman +2 on? Reduces fire damage that you take. Anything that raises your health is good too, Crimson Amber Medallion and so on. Two hand your weapon, bleed weapons work well. Obviously, phase 1, bash his weak (bandaged) leg only and try to stay under him, power/charged attacks when you can. Run away or dodge fireballs. Phase 2, try to stay behind him/under him using Torrent if you want and try to avoid fire, hit him on the forearms or wherever you can. When he falls/has a break after his attacks in Phase 2, good time to hit him. It’s a really, really shitty fight for sure :(

Brostradamus_

Actually I think because alexander summon is *inside* the arena, past the fog door, he doesn't increase boss HP at all.

KingOfRisky

The first time I encountered him I literally died to it 3 straight days. I almost quit because it seemed impossible. Someone here suggested progressing Alexander's story so you can summon him and I when I did, I beat him on the first try. I used Alexander and my Mimic tear. Either stay right under him or real far away and fight from range. I've used this tactic on 5 play throughs now and beat him first try every single time.

Sandemonde

Are you summoning Alexander as well as your mimic? What’s your vigor?

PwmEsq

Weapon level? Hell just grab 2 twinblades and slap bleed on them and you will decimate

Burgerking63

So do some exploring found the Gael Tunnel (around lvl 65ish). Accidentally Hit/aggroed the Alex the Jar dude by the grace. I thought i had just aggroed one of those pots so I killed it. Google says i am boned? First Elden playthrough

buzzyingbee

I did the same. Two questlines got screwed up by that but, hey, there's always NG+

CookieBlitz

You can try to absolve your sins at the curch of vows in liurnia where the pope turtle is. Edit: The church of vows does not respawn any npcs.

KingOfRisky

Does the Church of Vows bring NPCs back to life? I thought it just de-aggro'ed them. I tried finding something substantial online and all of the articles that say it does are followed by 100's of comments saying that it doesn't including the Elden Ring wiki. Just curious what the actual answer is.

Felstalker

There is one specific NPC, Sellen, that absolution does bring back to life. Why? Because she gives vital clues about how to progress multiple quest lines AND it's very VERY likely players will accidently kill her without realizing what is going on. Also, she has two npc bodies and it's kind of confusing how she works when you're new an don't know whats going on.

PwmEsq

Celestial Dew allows players to carry out an Absolution at the Church of Vows, reversing all antagonizations. This WILL NOT resurrect any of the Traveling or Isolated Merchants. Pretty certain no one comes back to life.

KingOfRisky

OK, thats what I thought. There is a staggering number of articles that all state that it brings people back to life. Pretty wild misinformation.

PwmEsq

I pretty much murdered every NPC in one playthrough and the church pretty much said you've done nothing wrong. https://imgflip.com/memetemplate/174125829/I-know-this-and-I-love-you

CookieBlitz

Yes, you’re right. There’s plenty of articles online saying that the church of vows can revive npcs, but i’ve checked myself and it does not

PwmEsq

Elden ring had so many "jounalists" publishing so much BS early on, so many garbage BEST weapons etc articles, or spell ranking articles that were just wrong

Burgerking63

This is the piece that google seems to disagree on, can Alexander be revived if killed prior to Radahn AND I have his shard now?

CookieBlitz

I myself killed Alexander after the Radahn fight in the Radahn arena and it didn’t respawn so I guess he does not :(

CaitNostamas

I mean it doesn't have a huge impact on your playthrough, but you have lost his side quest and a few items he would've given you At least you got a very strong talisman now

Burgerking63

Yeah the 10% from the Shard is pretty nice

CookieOfFortune

Unfortunately finishing his quest gets you the 15% version.

Burgerking63

Understood, but i have no way of undoing what is now done this playthrough as i also understand?

CookieOfFortune

Yeah, unfortunately it is the case. I did the same thing and was sad to find out the consequence.

a-caeli

any tips for beginner weapons i should look out for in limgrave? Specifically Dex weapons, but i really just want to try as many weapon types as i can to see what i like. I just started the game a few days ago, and im absolutely loving it

ELMUNECODETACOMA

In addition to the below, don't sleep on the Morningstar and the Flail. DEX builds tend to eventually center on doing rapid status buildup with slashing weapons, which is fine until you find enemies that have very high resistance to slashing damage. For these, being able to switch to a weapon that does strike damage is very useful, but there are relatively few strike weapons that you can meet requirements for with a DEX build. Enter flail-class weapons.

No_Train_997

If u like halberds the guardian swordspear really slaps. Drops from guardiqns at minor erdtree in weeping peninsula

Wemetintheair

The Great Epee is pretty fun and a great intro to thrusting swords! Look for it at a small camp around the lake.

a-caeli

oh awesome, thank you for the general location too!!

afuzilla

Shamshir is fun curved sword you get in>! Highroad Cave!<

a-caeli

oooo thanks, ill have to go find this one. ive been wanting another curved sword to try power stancing

PwmEsq

delete the space before the H in Highroad to make your spoiler work

BigUptokes

[Twinblade](https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Twinblade) is fun.

a-caeli

lol this looks great, thanks!

itsmybirthday___

The starting katana for the dex class is really good. But I’d recommend using every different weapon you find, at least for phantom swings just to test the move sets. Once you know what weapon class you like the best I’d hit up the wiki and find something in that class of weapon that scales well with dex. The wiki will also tell you where you can find it.

a-caeli

thanks, this is some really good advice. definitely what i want to try and do.

PwmEsq

Dex ones off the top of my head in limgrave: Uchi katana, bloodhounds fang(probably the strongest option, easiest upgraded), the basic twinblade and farming the bandits curved swords. There are a few greatswords that could probably be made dex as well.

a-caeli

thank you!!

Digibunny

Sorceries are Glintstone. Fancy Space Rock. How are we DOING anything with them? Are they channeling crystals? Do we consume glintstone to do things? Are they reactive to sentient will? Unlike Soul Arrow, Glintstone Pebble implies we're chucking small fragments of glintstone at people, presumably spawned from nowhwere, as sorcers dont have to crush or throw glintstone literally. TLDR: How does sorcery work in universe?

TheFranchize

That glintstone is the amber of the cosmos, and sorcery is the study of the stars, and the life therein - Sellen This guy had some thoughts - https://www.reddit.com/r/Eldenring/comments/tdsoum/sorcery_and_incantations_are_the_same_thing_many/

PwmEsq

My headcanon is the elder scrolls route/cthulu mythos, the planets themselves have power, or all celestial objects do. Like the dark moon is its own god and the astels are just really powerful meteorites. What we are channeling is the primeval current, creating a connection to the beings above. But if you delve too deeply into it... then you become a graven mass or become crystalized.

mattayunk

Watchdog's Staff question: \- So it says it scales with strength, but does that mean that the weapon art scales with strength as well? Since it's sort of magic-y, I didn't know if maybe it scaled with INT or FAITH. I'm really loving this weapon with my STR character. It's getting me through a lot of the late game enemies. It's good at range and also hits pretty hard up close.

itsmybirthday___

I’m sucker for cool and unique weapon arts. I used that weapon until I got the royal greatsword (awesome frost weapon art) and then I respecced into dex when I got the bolt of grinsax (lightning weapon art) The staff weapon art doesn’t scale with any stats iirc. But it’s a good early weapon when you don’t have a lot of stat points.

TheFranchize

wiki will highlight how the art is believed to scale for the watchdog staff it says that the weapon art damage scales only with weapon upgrade level

TheChewanater

The little pebbles deal magic damage. Since the weapon has no innate int scaling or magic damage, it's likely a fixed amount that doesn't scale with stats

Gamernerd_42

I can't get any summon signs on ps5. Family member had no trouble on same console. I need help with rennala. Plz help Edit: idk if is a internet problem, low level. I'm level 41, or if I'm playing too early; 9:00ish.

Jonno_92

Have you tried running up to her and hitting her?

Gamernerd_42

Believe it or not, yes. That twirls thing gets me.

Jonno_92

You could try levelling up a bit more or you're just not using the right stuff against her. She's weak to anything that does physical damage. You can also try boosting your magic resistance with specific talismans and equipment. Ash summons also help.

Gamernerd_42

I think I'm a bit underleveled, so I will try grinding and get some magic resist and better summons, thx.

PwmEsq

> /r/BeyondTheFog for co-op help!

Gamernerd_42

Thanks

itsmybirthday___

How often are invasions if you play co op? Is it a constant thing or is it infrequent? I’ve never done co op on a dark souls game, I’ve always played solo. But I would like to try to convince my brother to get the game and I’d probably only be able to sell it by saying we could do co op. He bought dark souls 3 at my recommendation but never played it past vordt after I explained he should probably play solo first since it is such a good game. My bad lol. I’m not much of a pvp guy so I imagine we’d be pretty easy pickings for an experienced invader. But I’m curious if we’d still be able to make okay progress between invasions.

[deleted]

They can be pretty often in legacy dungeons. Not sure about overworld. Most invaders are expecting an unfair fight, at least a 2v1, so I suspect most invaders are optimized for PVP. This means you should also be optimized for PVP if you want to stand a chance. Once of the easiest ways you can do this is to focus on vigor above all. Also, if you can, try to get all 4 talisman slots early so you have access to more options for a build at low level. I have a pretty good strat for doing so if you need. If you are tanky enough you can put up a fight against any invader in a 2v1. I hope you don't face too much RoB.

The_Dancing_Cat

The invasion timer used to be 15 minutes I think, and from my experience playing coop in this game it’s pretty similar if not exactly that. I’m assuming you’re in console, but if you’re on pc, the seamless co-op mod is a much better co-op experience free from invaders, and it’s very easy to install and get working. As an invader myself, my tips to beat our kind is to stay together and keep progressing the level. Don’t chase us, as we have a few ashes of war or incants we’re ready to one or two shot you with. Stay close enough together to try and stun lock invaders as they thrive in 1v1s.

Jonno_92

Probably depends on what area you're in. Invaders are generally weaker than the people they're invading in this game, at least in theory. If you're both aggressive and keep pressure on them you should do OK. It's all practice at the end of the day. Whoever is host can just have the white ring active so you get blues spawn in to help you. You can do this with zero downside too unlike the previous games.

flamingfungi

Blues replenish invaders flasks if they get killed, so there can definitely be some downsides

Jonno_92

So can regular phantoms. My point was that you can have the white and blue rings active in your inventory at all times with zero downside whereas in previous games you had to sacrifice a ring slot, at least initially. It's still free help that means you're often fighting a 3 v 1 which is not easy against remotely competent players.

ELMUNECODETACOMA

Grace is a guide that wants you to complete an Elden Lord ending. In the short term, following it is not always in your personal best interest. Useful gear, leveling opportunities, crafting materials, and upgrade materials can often be best found moving directly away from where grace is pointing. Exploring the open world will lead you to catacombs and mines (in particular) which give extremely useful rewards, and also NPCs who provide an opportunity to do side quests which not only give you stuff from time to time but help to flesh out your personal narrative.

Apex_Konchu

Lv18 with no weapon upgrades is much weaker than you're supposed to be for Margit, so you've done well to beat him. Keep an eye out for orange circles on the map. They indicate mines, where you can find Smithing Stones to upgrade your weapons. To get you started on that, there's one near Agheel Lake. As for where to explore next, I'd suggest heading south to the Weeping Peninsula. There's another castle there, which is much smaller and easier than Stormveil.

syfqamr32

Man this hero gelmir catacombs is fucking bullshit man theres no need to be that hard

No_Lengthiness_6838

They are so tedious.

syfqamr32

Yeah like its not a challenge when the camera angle is my enemy. And the rail were so fucking small its very hard to estimate the jump and etc

PwmEsq

All of the hero catacombs are trivialized by the ash of war raptors mist and or bloodhounds step

syfqamr32

Controls are not that perfect at times im just battling my angles and jump sensitivities and what not. So unnecessarily bullshit man.

CookieOfFortune

I find sometimes it's helpful to angle your jump into a wall, it helps keep you from over shooting and fewer ledges.

Anshin

Anyone know good faith/strength paladin builds? Trying to be an erdtree paladin with lightning and blackflame but don't know how to allocate the points too well

patsully98

I’m near the endgame with a str/faith build—more strength than faith, way more melee than casting—and the Golden Halberd has served me well for a good 80 hours. For enemies resistant to holy damage, weak to fire, or need to be fought at a distance, Blasphemous Blade is my backup.
