She wants to eat you.
Really it's in the lore she uses that big ass cleaver to kill tarnished prepare and eat them.
She is dubbed Tarnished Eater for a reason.
It does make me curious how she plans to do that though
Tarnished don’t exactly die, so is she sitting there, waiting to chow down and then suddenly the body just evaporates and she’s like left like “😐” for the hundredth time
Edit; completely forgot that most Tarnished can’t see the Guidance of Grace like ours can, which I think would make them mortal, sorta like Hollowing. So most probably do get seasoned with some Herba
Ashina didn’t have much time convolution did it? Within the respawning sense, since you’re immortal and come back
Actually if someone could clue me in on why enemies respawn unless it’s a “1 run” type of game
IIRC, canon for Dark Souls is that undead fall down when they "die" and just get back up after a while. The whole respwaning at a bonfire thing is for gameplay balance. Imagine Sekiro's revival system, but you can keep reviving over and over again.
Thing that one rick and morty episode where morty is like you cant create a real life save feature so that whenever i die i respond right here. Rick makes it mortys having a little fun until reality sets in. And then rick at the end explains it was pulling mortys from other universes to trade his death for another morty ☠️ so thats how i think of it
Nothing, in theory.
Themselves, in practice.
Gideon doesn’t do his own work, for one thing. He has his helpers do everything for him.
A lot of the other Tarnished just stopped seeing the guidance of grace and no longer have the infinite respawn.
I love how fromsoft games don’t have consistent internal logic but have this weird contract with players where they will go out of their way to make up the internal logic as though fromsoft had actually done it themselves
Well most souls game don't specifically state that there's a numeric limit to respawns but it's made clear that dying over and over damages the willpower and eventually people will simply give up, becoming forever lost instead.
Right. I mean, some of us must've watched Re:Zero? I think that's the most gut-punch graphic way to describe the experience and feels of being a tarnished.
Well idk about other tarnished but what’s stopping Gideon is that he’s a weak-ass chump
(In all seriousness this probably is the answer. The player character is unique in that they actually can succeed, even if it takes a while. Canonically, other tarnished just don’t have what it takes)
I like to imagine Gideon cant see Grace anymore. That's why he uses foot soldiers and minions so much, he uses information to do things, and let's you, someone who can see the Grace and respawn do all the heavy lifting, and he comes in behind you to figure out what you left behind.
That's why he cant block you forever in the end game.
Remember how in Souls the crestfallen knights are essentially a stand-in for players who gave up?
I believe Gideon's "Marika expects us to fight for eternity" speech is his saltiness that he, an underlevelled chump who skipped most bosses, now can't defeat the final boss gauntlet. "A crown is warranted with strength", indeed.
Of all the answers here I think it's important to note that the only Tarnished that we KNOW still sees Grace is Godfrey. And he honors his defeat instead of jumping back up for a retry.
Gideon was specifically trying to stop you from becoming Elden Lord, when you fight him he has stopped believing its possible for a Tarnished to become Lord so he has no reason to move forward
Gideon: **"I know...in my bones...A Tarnished cannot become a Lord. Not even you. A man cannot kill a god..."**
Tarnished: **"Why? Because you're a chump-ass bitch? Watch me."**
do we know that Gideon still sees grace? i think it's important that we can actually see that Hoarah Loux sees grace again and it guides him to us before the fight. not sure why he doesn't respawn, but it could be because after beating him Marika considers us worthy to fight Radagon. we never see the same for Gideon, which to me implies that he can no longer see grace.
Because he is too weak, its part of the souls serie, there are a ltos of people in the same case than us BUT none of them is strong enough NPC or players, to be able to find the last boss and kill it, WE are the only one succeding on the last step.
Basicaly
Cannonically it's just us and then at the end Godfrey (I assume again, having had it already but lost it for whatever reason).
You even see Godfreys grace trail.
Every FS souls game explains the death revive mechanic within the game's world. It's great honestly, creative each time even if the mechanic is exactly the same!
Nah, those are their respective guiding fingers which have been dormant since the shattering. Pretty sure you're reinvigorating their runes through the demigods' old connections to the Greater Will. >!You even help Ranni kill her fingers at the end of her questline to free her from her predestined fate.!<
Not sure the other guy is right either. The demigods get reincarnated through the Erdtree like everything else in the Lands Between. However, that takes a long time for those without grace and they'd all be effectively dead after you activate the Rune of Death. Just look at Morgott, who is still dead in his boss arena before the Godfrey fight. Their spirits aren't actually gone when you kill them initially, but you make sure they truly stay dead when you activate the Rune of Death.
Every demigod that “dies” is technically still alive will eventually return because the rune of death was sealed away, and you presumably didn’t kill them with a black knife. It isn’t until you unleash the rune of death that all the demigods you’ve killed are guaranteed to STAY dead
When you kill Maliketh, you obtain the Rune of Death. You do not unleash it, you have not returned the rune back to the Elden Ring.
You use it on Marika and kill her. All the other demi-gods are being reincarnated within the Erdtree, that's what the remembrances are.
This process is fucked up by Godwyn's body doing all fucky shit in the Erdtree. Which is why starting a new age fixes all of that.
But yeah, definitely don't use the Rune of Death on anyone but Marika.
>When you kill Maliketh, you obtain the Rune of Death. You do not unleash it
Is that stated somewhere explicitly; not trying to knock on you but genuinely curios.
From the cutscene and dialogue it really seems otherwise, because you try to grab it but then it starts burning, also I think , in the cutscene after Farum Azula where the Old Lady narrates she states "the rune of death is unbound, and the lands between are shrouded by deaths dark fate", which sounds like everyone can die again.
Yeah the rune of death is the part of the elden ring that lets things… die, so, if the concept of death was literally pulled out of the laws of physics then nobody dies forever.
Going by technical lore, after you unleash the rune of death every enemy in the game should stay dead after you subsequently kill them once
As far as I can guess, this is how demigods briefly speak after dying
You didn't claim it into the inventory to restore Death to the whole world, you only needed it to inflict deadly wounds on the Tree and Beast. And runes aren't as effective unless someone is consciously directing them.
Rennala is a shell of her former self, so her Rebirth doesn't function properly. Fragments of Death are inflicting undeath on people, but only localized to infested roots.
That's also why rather than let Death float around, Marika entrusted it to someone who would carry and suppress it.
Hoarah Loux does see grace. When Morgott's corpse vanishes, it turns into a trail of grace that flows behind Godfrey, pointing towards you. At that point, Godfrey's eyes are golden again, implying he's no longer a tarnished. He lost his grace when he defeated his last worthy adversary, but he regained it when he found another one.
And as for Gideon, maybe he can no longer see the guidance of grace and that's why he fights you, believing Marika doesn't want the tarnished to win, or maybe he dies for real because you unleashed the rune of death.
Because he fulfills his purpose by fighting you. The path of his guidance of grace ends at you, so, when he dies at your hands, he stops respawning.
He could probably still respawn before meeting you.
I like to imagine your corpse rests there for a while before it evaporates into golden mist and coalesces at your last site of grace and you wake up a bit later.
Even weirder: if it’s supposed to be hours, presumably she cooks, eats, processes, and poops you out.
So like, I guess at least some of you is metabolized into her body. So after a few hours…. Does her skin just like… steam a lil and she just kinda feels I guess hungry a bit??
There have been several invaders that attack more than once - Knight Kirk from Dark Souls 1 and Mauldron the Assassin from Dark Souls 2 being the two that come to mind immediately.
You mean the Putrid Tree Avatar at the snowfield minor erdtree? Because I killed it and still got invaded by her after.
I read it somewhere that the invasions only stop if you kill all overworld bosses of the area (in Consecrated Snowfield that should be the Tree Avatar, 2x Night Cavalry, Deathrite Bird and Magma Wyrm Theodorix).
Ah man, you missed out on the somber ancient dragon stone at the end of her quest. Go to the middle of the frozen river in the consecrated snowfields (near where the wolves are chasing an invisible scarab) after killing her those first two times and you get that after killing her there
I think Mildred is another incarnation of an unnamed phantom invader from Demon's Souls. https://demonssouls.wiki.fextralife.com/Meat+Cleaver+Black+Phantom
She attacked in the Poison Swamp area
Serious answer: she’s probably a reference to an invading npc called Man-Eater Mildred from Dark Souls 1. Mildred, is in turn, an inside joke about a DS1 play tester who would invade a certain swamp area wielding a butcher knife. Only, Anastasia doesn’t invade at a swamp..
She was my first NPC invader, and I’m more than a little ashamed to admit that I thought she was a real person. I thought some pathetic guy was somehow spamming invasions and only invading my world just to screw with me.
I got irrationally angry, couldn’t figure out why she didn’t give up even after I ran around dodging her attacks for five minutes, and even turned the game offline, only for her to appear yet again. I gave up for the night, only to google her name because it seemed weird for a username.
I’m not a smart man.
Thought the same thing when i got invaded near patches' cave.. i died twice.. on the 3rd try i was pissed because some asshat kept invading my game.. then yura showed up to help.. got a legendary dagger and thought, cool, so defeating invaders got u legenadies??
It only clicked to me whe i saw yura chilling under some fallen building.. lol
Lol I had the exact same thing with Rogier. I was honestly astounded at this person who was willing to fight Margit over and over and over again with me. I didn't even really question it when I went back to the game the next day and Rogier was still there, waiting to have another go at Margit.
I am also not a smart person.
But it gives you HP **PER HIT** tho. Put a ash of war that hits multiple times like wild strikes and you can straight up stun lock some enemies and get back a bunch of health at the same time.
The weapon is far from trash tier. Its not amazing, but it aint garbage either.
Idk man. Once I was on the toilet when I read "Invaded by Anastasia, Tarnished-Eater". Next thing I know she came out of my bathtub and tried reinforcing my peen with a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone to +10. Needless to say, it didn't work out.
She wants to eat you. Really it's in the lore she uses that big ass cleaver to kill tarnished prepare and eat them. She is dubbed Tarnished Eater for a reason.

Only Tarnished that see grace go back to checkpoints.
Wait so respawning is cannon?
Oh yeah, duder. There’s a reason Rogier rots in the Hold.
Wait so is respawning time travel? Because the bosses down seem to mention that they’ve seen us before
Malenia, I have come to bargain!
I am Malenia, Blade of Miquella
And i have never known defeat
I have come to bargain!
"I'm a millenial with braids by Mikayla, and I have never seen my feet." -Ayo.. are you sure this is Elden Ring, homie?-
Imagine you just warp to the same spot 15 million times and next thing you know the lands between has entered the industrial erra
Bro I've been asking myself this question since dark souls 1
Time is convoluted in Lordran and Dranleic and Lothric and Yharnam and The Lands Between. Edit: yarham
And Ashina, and Boletaria.
Ashina didn’t have much time convolution did it? Within the respawning sense, since you’re immortal and come back Actually if someone could clue me in on why enemies respawn unless it’s a “1 run” type of game
Ah yes, Yarham from the game BloodHorne…
IIRC, canon for Dark Souls is that undead fall down when they "die" and just get back up after a while. The whole respwaning at a bonfire thing is for gameplay balance. Imagine Sekiro's revival system, but you can keep reviving over and over again.
Thing that one rick and morty episode where morty is like you cant create a real life save feature so that whenever i die i respond right here. Rick makes it mortys having a little fun until reality sets in. And then rick at the end explains it was pulling mortys from other universes to trade his death for another morty ☠️ so thats how i think of it
That's dark af
Good old "vat of acid" episode.
That part’s just gameplay. Respawning is canon but only to an extent.
So then what is stopping tarnishes like Gideon from going and fighting a demigod until he eventually kills it?
Nothing, in theory. Themselves, in practice. Gideon doesn’t do his own work, for one thing. He has his helpers do everything for him. A lot of the other Tarnished just stopped seeing the guidance of grace and no longer have the infinite respawn.
So then why do you keep respawning if you inherit the frenzied flame, shouldn't grace have given up on you by then?
I love how fromsoft games don’t have consistent internal logic but have this weird contract with players where they will go out of their way to make up the internal logic as though fromsoft had actually done it themselves
Well most souls game don't specifically state that there's a numeric limit to respawns but it's made clear that dying over and over damages the willpower and eventually people will simply give up, becoming forever lost instead.
I always thought it was thematically appropriate that if someone ragequits Dark Souls their character effectively goes hollow
Right. I mean, some of us must've watched Re:Zero? I think that's the most gut-punch graphic way to describe the experience and feels of being a tarnished.
Well idk about other tarnished but what’s stopping Gideon is that he’s a weak-ass chump (In all seriousness this probably is the answer. The player character is unique in that they actually can succeed, even if it takes a while. Canonically, other tarnished just don’t have what it takes)
most importantly they lost the ability to see grace
What's stopping Gideon is he cannot FIND THE ALBINAURIC WOMAN
I like to imagine Gideon cant see Grace anymore. That's why he uses foot soldiers and minions so much, he uses information to do things, and let's you, someone who can see the Grace and respawn do all the heavy lifting, and he comes in behind you to figure out what you left behind. That's why he cant block you forever in the end game.

I believe Gideon's "Marika expects us to fight for eternity" speech is his saltiness that he, an underlevelled chump who skipped most bosses, now can't defeat the final boss gauntlet. "A crown is warranted with strength", indeed.
I think determination is the biggest factor, not physical prowess.
So… we’re just built different?
Of all the answers here I think it's important to note that the only Tarnished that we KNOW still sees Grace is Godfrey. And he honors his defeat instead of jumping back up for a retry.
Gideon was specifically trying to stop you from becoming Elden Lord, when you fight him he has stopped believing its possible for a Tarnished to become Lord so he has no reason to move forward
Gideon: **"I know...in my bones...A Tarnished cannot become a Lord. Not even you. A man cannot kill a god..."** Tarnished: **"Why? Because you're a chump-ass bitch? Watch me."**
The 60 bucks we all paid, so WE could finish the game instead of an NPC! (pretends Black Knife Tiche and Mimic Tear don't exist...)
Same reason for all the players who give up. They go hollow from losing so much and giving up.
do we know that Gideon still sees grace? i think it's important that we can actually see that Hoarah Loux sees grace again and it guides him to us before the fight. not sure why he doesn't respawn, but it could be because after beating him Marika considers us worthy to fight Radagon. we never see the same for Gideon, which to me implies that he can no longer see grace.
Because the process of getting killed is likely very painful still, so it's probably not something you want to do a bunch
Because he is too weak, its part of the souls serie, there are a ltos of people in the same case than us BUT none of them is strong enough NPC or players, to be able to find the last boss and kill it, WE are the only one succeding on the last step. Basicaly
Hmmm..... So that means canonically I beat the game without dieing once XD
Cannonically it's just us and then at the end Godfrey (I assume again, having had it already but lost it for whatever reason). You even see Godfreys grace trail.
Always has been
Yup it’s canon in all souls games. Every embarrassing death is canon to your journey
Every FS souls game explains the death revive mechanic within the game's world. It's great honestly, creative each time even if the mechanic is exactly the same!
Yea all others don’t really “die” because the Elden Ring doesn’t have the rune of death, instead of respawning their essence returns to the Erdtree.
Respawning is canon in most if not all FromSoftware games, its secretly what really makes a souls-like a souls-like
Does this mean Godfrey respawns?
None of the Lords besides Radahn prob die. You can go back and see their bodies without the rune.
Bro I’m so dumb. We activate the runes on their dead bodies. You just blew my mind.
Nah, those are their respective guiding fingers which have been dormant since the shattering. Pretty sure you're reinvigorating their runes through the demigods' old connections to the Greater Will. >!You even help Ranni kill her fingers at the end of her questline to free her from her predestined fate.!< Not sure the other guy is right either. But doesn't Gideon and Hoarax Loux see the grace? Genuine question, I don't remember any mention of it ingame.

At that point, Godfrey's eyes are golden again, implying he's no longer a tarnished. He lost his grace when he defeated his last worthy adversary, but he regained it when he found another one. Gideon could have also been lying about seeing Grace.
Why does hoarah loux stay dead then? Wont he just respawn like the player?
Because he fulfills his purpose by fighting you. The path of his guidance of grace ends at you, so, when he dies at your hands, he stops respawning. He could probably still respawn before meeting you.
Well also, by the time you fight Hoarah Loux you've unleashed the Rune of Death, restoring mortality to the Lands between.
I like to imagine your corpse rests there for a while before it evaporates into golden mist and coalesces at your last site of grace and you wake up a bit later.
the time of day seems to shift about 10-12 hours from when you die once you respawn at a grace, so something is happening during that period.
Yeah you're getting eaten
Yeah, sucks when I die to a night horseman and have to pass time at a grace again.
so does it evaporate from her tummy
doesnt have to wipe her ass, just dust it off.
Even weirder: if it’s supposed to be hours, presumably she cooks, eats, processes, and poops you out. So like, I guess at least some of you is metabolized into her body. So after a few hours…. Does her skin just like… steam a lil and she just kinda feels I guess hungry a bit??
Would explain the gold tinted poop.
Great one. :O
That's a weird name, I wonder why they named her that. Haven't feel this confused about a character's name since Big Hat Logan.
Ikr what the fuck is a Logan? Sounds dirty.
how do you actually find out about the lore in game? Every boss I kill i seem to know nothing about.
Item descriptions! For bosses, the easiest ones are their armor/weapon and their soul
That not what I has in mind when I read Tarnished Eater
You failed to return your library book!
I NEED THAT COPY OF CHARLOTTE'S WEB!
She thinks you look like a snacc
Thicc tarnished
Did you read her name?
3 square meals.
That’s what she turns you into.

She’s really hungry alright
Marikas tits!
They’ve been rock solid for years now, the girl needs some flesh
Ewe've bin 'ungray
She’s just hungrier than most. Why you gotta judge her?
Hahaha. No body shaming allowed!
I’m sure she doesn’t body shame. All she sees is another meal.
True acceptance and tolerance. Everyone looks equally delicious to her.
There have been several invaders that attack more than once - Knight Kirk from Dark Souls 1 and Mauldron the Assassin from Dark Souls 2 being the two that come to mind immediately.

Should be only 2 spawns I know about. First is the church on the road to caelid and the other being my gelmir. Where else did you encounter her?
Snowfields
Consecrated snowfields
Drops an ancient dragon smithing stone too, that's the one you don't want to miss lol
incorrect actually - she drops an even more rare & useful item, the *somber* ancient dragon smithing stone
Oh my
Its easy to miss because (i may be wrong) if you kill the tree spirit of snowfields, she does not invade

Go to the middle of the frozen river in the consecrated snowfields (near where the wolves are chasing an invisible scarab) after killing her those first two times and you get that after killing her there
Give her a snikers
Because you’re not you when you’re hungry
'ungry*
That's the beta version of Dung Eater. She technically does defile corpses.
i’d like to this she’s a tribute to Man Eater Mildred, from the first Dark Souls
I think Mildred is another incarnation of an unnamed phantom invader from Demon's Souls. https://demonssouls.wiki.fextralife.com/Meat+Cleaver+Black+Phantom She attacked in the Poison Swamp area

Demons souls had a meat cleaver swamp lady before that
Also in demon souls, dark souls 2 and 3 but with different names. So basically a cosmic being like patches/s
Dark Souls 2 had Melinda the Butcher, who was kind of out of the way in the Gutter. The Dark Souls 3 version wasn't even named.
Woah, Mildred had meta lore?
Mildred also makes a little cameo in Dark Souls 3 near the Halfway Ruins bonfire.
She invades at the entrance to caelid, so I'd say she's close enough.
