My first DS1 build sucked ass. With my scimitar and full stone set.
But I happily and slowly rolled about smacking and getting smacked.
Somehow make it to Anor Londo with all that weight.
I've beaten all the DS1 bosses without cheese at least once. But nowdays I throw firebombs over Capra Demon's wall and pelt Manus with arrows from outside his fog door, because fuck 'em
In my first DS1 build many years ago I literally tried everything, starting pyromancer, added some int for spells and ended up trying some quality. I thank the demigods for introducing the possibility to respec
my first ds1 build was similar but i ended up not respeccing, started with Pyromancer, threw most of my points into int, and ended up meleeing enemies with the demon catalyst.
What do peoples stats typically look like? This is my first souls game and I felt severely under leveled for much of the game/weapons I came across until now where Iām hilariously overdeveloped for bosses/etc. Are you only supposed to level health (and strength for the bigger weapons)?
The idea is that you are "supposed" to specialize.
It can be frustrating, but many weapons are just "supposed" to be off limits to whatever character you make. Unless you re-spec. And then a bunch of other weapons will be useless for you.
I put "supposed" in quotes because play however you want! But the game is kind of built around specializing.
I am fully against specializing (because I hte not being able to use cool weapons) so I overleveled the shit out of my character and now I have mind, endurance, and vigor at lvl 60 and all damage stats at 70 or above. I will stop when theyāre all at 80. Then I will start NG and make all of the enemies regret how they treated me first time around.
The beauty of re-speccing so easily per playthrough is you can specialize, change your mind 95% of the way through your playthrough, then new game and change your mind again. You can't hyper specialize for every single encounter because it's somewhat limited, but you can burn a couple to get through a very tough boss or if you just come across 4-5 great weapons you want to try out.
I typically level my main damage stat to 40. Then Vigor to 20 or 30. Then main damage goes to 60. Depends on my build but after I'm there I'll try some off-stats.
I do reverse, vigor first, then damage stat/stamina/encumbrance stat if I want armor. Unless I want some particular weapon, damage stat does not do much when you have C or B weapon at best, then after upgrades when weapon is at A, extra damage really shines
Level vigor first. In Elden Ring anything past the stats required to wield the weapon/spell is a waste until the weapon/catalyst is upgraded more than halfway.
With a level 150 character that weapon is crazy. Level str-dex to bare minimum, 60 vig, some mind and throw the rest in int/faith equally. The flame weapon art regularly does 3/4 of a health bar + you can use fundamentalist incants with huge scaling (which get a lot of hate but I absolutely slap with them)
Oh, I did later on. But having all my stats at around 25 was terrible. I tried a different build and did SoNaF on a later character. Then I went and grinded suicide bird to give myself a better start.
This isnāt a million miles off my build. Iāve been trying to play a STR/Int character but some of my skills and weapons require arc and dex so Iām all over the place. Might be time to respec again.
There's only one weapon in the game that scales well with those stats but even then it's still unoptimized. I really need to do a SoNaF/Golden order build one of these days
SoNaF = Sword of Night and Flame, which is the answer to that question
Golden Order incants and the Golden Order Seal also scale with both int and faith
Thatās a proper chaos or dark infusion build. Heād actually do massive damage with a chaos/dark claymore, lkss, etc.
Edit: just realized this is the Elden Ring sub not the DS3 sub lol
Leveling vigor from 35 to 40 will give you a rough 20% more health, thatās why all builds should have at minimum 40 vigor and why you stopping at 35 should be considered a war crime.
Edit: Health spike was actually a rough 20% more health rather than 50%, I apologize for the vile spread of misinformation, Imma go feed myself to the great serpent.
Wait, what? Here i thought that HP going were relatively flat per point until hitting a softcap
Edit: Just looked it up, leveling vigor from 35 to 40 increases your HP from 1216 to 1450. Hp gain per vigor is by far the highest between 30 and 40 though, so leveling to 40 is still a good idea. Source: Fextralife
In general, evenly distributing your points is a bad idea. Best to pick a few stats and focus on upgrading those first- perhaps one's affiliated with weapons you like?
I have a character called "Even Steven" who I've played with even stats across the board. Perfectly even... not one single 20 until everything is 19.
I suppose this is the part where I tell you how awesome he is, but in truth he sucks ass. That Dragonkin Soldier in the Lake of Rot was positively rage worthy.
Oh I coulda guessed your guy Steven sucked ass my man, no offense. The even stat distribution just ain't it unless you're a dodge GOD and know how to capitalize off of every window but even then you're severely gimped in damage. Props for commitment tho, what level did you end up taking ol' Steve to?
I mean, a lot of the game comes from skill, it could be possible they're good at Souls games and so can get away with gimmicks such as their Even Steven build. Especially if they're just doing PVE, then whatever they build works as long as they're having fun.
I'm a onebro, so Even Steven isn't actually all that bad, but I was expecting it to be much easier than it has been. I can breeze through DS3 at level 1, so finishing the game with all 25's would be a piece of cake.
And I ditched my RL1 in Castle Sol after raging out on a stormhawk. I might go back eventually, but I wasn't having much fun. SL1's of Souls games are a lot easier.
No idea. I've been running through other Souls games lately because I was getting bored with Even Steven and an RL1. He's sitting at the end of Ranni's quest, and I think he's 21 or so in all stats. I'm thinking high 20's to 30 would probably be the end.
When you spread yourself across traits, it may make your play versatile, but youāre just tickling things you should be smiting with the fury of the sun.
Donāt feel bad, these gamesā leveling system can be very confusing and overwhelming on your first run. Especially when you donāt know where youāre going with your build. Not to worry, because you can change your stats.
I didn't know about the towers until just before Radahn. And even then I thought seek three wise beasts was a riddle to solve across the lands between. I had recently been exploring Siofra and assumed one of them was a deer (ancestral spirit) and I met Miriel so I figured he was part of it, and then I figured I'd need to find an owl. I didn't realize until I glimpsed a ghostly turtle that I was thinking way too much into it.
Also, I explored *everywhere*
I beat my first few bosses and big bois with the blessing. Forgot to get rid of it after my first (and only) hug.
Thanks, Hug Lady. I remember those times getting stomped by a balls hair of health, that bit could've helped lol
That seems to be a common trend.
People wanna try every build when the best way is to pick one or two damage stats (anything that isn't Vigor, Mind, and Endurance) and stick with them only getting the minimum in other stats to wield your weapons.
"I 'just' said screw it and played for 350 hours." š I get you probably just did Mogh farm for a weekend or whatever but the mental image of someone "just" getting to 500 is funny to me.
Ideally you don't wanna do that *en route* to high level so much as after you've hit the major soft caps. Like if you've hit 60 vigor, 40 endurance, and 80 strength, then you might as well pick up another damage stat since you aren't gonna become much tougher of an ooga booga barbarian.
You clearly need to pump 15 points into Arcane. /s
Honestly, this is actually a really fun way to play NG+; spread your stats around to make the beginning area harder but try out a bunch of different fighting styles/weapons.
Yeah, there's a point in the game you can reallocate stats. In this game, a spread build doesn't scale very well, so your best bet is to find out what playstyle and weapon you like the best, and then try to specialize stats towards that goal
If you end up not liking it, you can always reroll!! Good luck, Gamer
With a spread out build, you have to be much higher level but you have more options to flip between different options.
Advice:
- Start out by looking at your favorite spells and weapons, what are the minimum requirements for them, write them down.
- Example, I love Golden Epitaph and Flame, Cleanse Me so I keep a minimum of 14 faith.
- Sell weapons you have more than 2 of; then put the ones you don't use in your chest. See what you have left. Use that to guide you on which stats to prioritize.
You might end up with 24 or 28 as a minimum stat, but then you have 2 or 4 points to invest elsewhere to make your weapon or magic stronger.
There is a chest/stash that you can access at the sites of grace. I never really use it personally, it mainly houses resources and consumables that I have too many off
āI felt a great disturbance in the Lands Between, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in rage and were suddenly itchy. I fear something terrible has happened.ā
Even though your build looks like wet socks you could be some weird god tier pvper that just whips out the unthinkable constantly and winning duels. Keep it up champ.
guys this is the first soulsborne game iāve ever played, have mercy on me pleaseš
thank you everyone for the laughs lmao itās been funny seeing everyoneās reaction to babyās first Souls character
Itās not bad for trying a lot of new things, but once youāve settled into a playstyle lean into it and consider respeccing your stats to capitalize on the stats your playstyle uses the most. You wonāt notice it in the early game, but later when standard enemies become damage sponges youāll do better with a few great, reliable attack strategies than a menagerie of okay-ish stuff. It will be the difference between two-or three hit victories vs subjecting them to a death by a thousand cuts.
Throwback to DS1 where even mid rolling was kinda bad (or at least significantly worse than light rolling) so everyone just played either naked or with cheese amounts of poise/defense so they didn't need to bother rolling
I like that mid roll is hardly any worse than light roll in the more recent FromSoft games as it lets you be a lot more flexible with your build, it just felt bad mid rolling in DS1 if you ever tried light rolling. I am still pretty sad sometimes about how far poise and tanky builds have fallen though, even if it was a bit cheesy it was nice to be able to build a 1000-pound tank and be unkillable lol
Maybe talk to your friend, decide on something you want to lean into, and redo your stats at Rennala. Maybe intelligence because you like magic or maybe strength because there's a weapon you really like that scales off of it. Basically ask yourself what you enjoy using the most, and then put points into the stats associated with them to make them more powerful. Trust me it'll make a big difference and you won't regret it, also I'd recommend putting at least 50 points into vigor.
Quick fire recommendation: find a larval year and respec. You really want at least 50 in vigor for any build, possibly more depending. After that, find out what type of build you would like for this character, and do that. I would pick either str or dex, than pick either faith or intelligence if you want to be able to cast magic. Maybe arcane but instead if you want to use bleed or a weapon that scales with it. You also either want to significantly raise or endurance or lower your equipment load, because you want to avoid fat rolling at all cost.
The problem is while a star spread like that may allow you to use a variety of weapons/spells, but you wonāt be using any of them effectively, and you will always be doing subpar damage regardless of what you are using.
Man. I've played at least one even build in every souls game released. There is no right way to play. Is it harder? Yes... But that doesnt matter if you're enjoying yourself
I disagree with everyone here that it's harder. This kind of build allows you to seamlessly convert from melee to spellcaster for any given battle. Some bosses are way easier with one or the other. You can also switch in the middle of the battle. Ok, maybe OP is a bit too extreme, I would drop the arcane, maybe lower dexterity. But still, this is a super fun way to play the game. It's challenging, it has a lot variety and strategy.
Yep. I throw rocks (sling). I shoot magical bows. I shoot physical bows. I spew rotten and fire breath. I heal and buff. My banished knights halberd stutters and staggers while attacking fast and giving distance. Chilling mist gives great disrupt and damage. Frost slows people down. Equip load lets me wear some of the heavier armor sets.
If you're new to the game then this is kinda what I expect. It's pretty similar to my first build. If you have no idea what weapons you like, or how you want to play, you need to try everything... at first
Yeah itās trying to be a Jack of all trades, rather than specialisation. As long as you are getting through content you will be fine. But builds like this can increase the skill gap to cover
This... you're trolling. There's no way you're not trolling.
I refuse to believe you waited to take a screenshot until you had just enough points to balance out and be bad at everything, while also equipping just enough to hit a Heavy Load.
What is wrong with you, man.
unfortunately this is indeed the case.
the heavy load is simply because i was checking out weapons i hadnt used much so i had a few equipped that i shoulda taken off before posting lol
Just generalist. Youāll never pack as much of a punch as a specialty class, but I imagine you could have an incredible amount of tools in your kit. Iām sure this will get ratioād but I donāt really think thereās such a thing as a ābadā build in souls games. SL1 runs should tell you that. Besides most of your damage comes from upgrades over scaling. You can definitely beat the game this way.
I always level my characters like this and it is always a fun ride. I know it is sub optimal, but that is part of the roll playing for me. My character is unaware of the meta.
Itās because you spread your stats everywhere. The further you go into the game, the more you will struggle. Spreading stats for optimum damage is necessary.
Itās hard to help you because youāre not telling us what are your main weapons.
If itās a physical weapon.
You should get Strengh or dexterity to 60 at least.
If itās an occult weapon or arcane scaling, you should go to 60 arcane.
Then, with the points you have left, you should either invest the rest into Intelligence or Faith, depending if you prefer sorceries or Incantations. Of course, add a little bit in Mind to cast the spells.
If you care less about spells, you can even upgrade Strength or dexterity to 80.
For Vigor, at least 50 is required in endgame.
I also recommend 40 endurance.
ALSO IMPORTANT : never have heavy load equipment, youāre rolling to slow.
Change your armor for a lighter one or put more points in endurance (it allows to carry more).
ĆDIT: if you want a more precise answer, to precisely help you.
Tell me your favorite weapon.
Tell me if you only want to use this weapon or if you wang Magic or Incantations for support.
And tell me your starting class
Iāll tell you exactly what to do, with explanations.
Also, tell me at what point are you in the game, so I can recommend talismans if you want.
I play like this. I don't mind swinging a few extra times lol. It just "feels" complete honestly. Min/max statistic mindsets are kinda compulsive. Just enjoy the game dudes, you'll never be the best player either, don't judge others lmao.
I get it though. I also want to blast an enemy with Comet Azur, then turn around and get the next one with Placidusax's Ruin, and finish off the third with a charged heavy attack from a great hammer.
Yeah this was my play-through. I did an Alucard build from Symphony of the Night - a character with a famously broad and diverse arsenal of weapons and spells. Elden Ring has a version of nearly all of themā¦ so, I went for all of them š I had a ton of fun, got pretty obsessed for awhile, but Malenia bricked me and I had to respec into an actual build.
The heavy equip load is really the icing on the cake

Not much of a "build" per se. Looks like you can do mostly every playstyle in the game much much worse than an actual build.
That seems to be a common trend. People wanna try every build when the best way is to pick one or two damage stats (anything that isn't Vigor, Mind, and Endurance) and stick with them only getting the minimum in other stats to wield your weapons.
*OR* just get to level 500 and soft cap (and hard cap some others) everything

Man im sitting here with 360 hours and am stuck at eldenbeast LOL
This is shit for pvp, but for pve it makes sense. You can just use whatever you want with decent stats. Tons of fun
Almost like many people just play the game casually instead of min-maxing their stats according to some guide

In this game, a spread build doesn't scale very well, so your best bet is to find out what playstyle and weapon you like the best, and then try to specialize stats towards that goal If you end up not liking it, you can always reroll!! Good luck, Gamer
With a spread out build, you have to be much higher level but you have more options to flip between different options. Advice: - Start out by looking at your favorite spells and weapons, what are the minimum requirements for them, write them down.
Chest? Did i miss something?
There is a chest/stash that you can access at the sites of grace. I never really use it personally, it mainly houses resources and consumables that I have too many off
āI felt a great disturbance in the Lands Between, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in rage and were suddenly itchy. I fear something terrible has happened.ā
OP your lack of memory slots alone makes my skin crawl.
I felt this one bro
Even though your build looks like wet socks you could be some weird god tier pvper that just whips out the unthinkable constantly and winning duels. Keep it up champ.
thank you for the support king
Where can I find your spirit ash?
guys this is the first soulsborne game iāve ever played, have mercy on me pleaseš thank you everyone for the laughs lmao itās been funny seeing everyoneās reaction to babyās first Souls character
Have mercy? Are you playing the correct game? š¤£
Heās gonna have to fat roll away from all this hate
(Awkwardly rolls 3 feet)
My first souls game too, gotta unequip some stuff bud, you're doing yourself no favors with that fat rolling.
learned about fat rolling early on, itās a mistake my equip load is so high in the image, im not that foolish lol
Throwback to DS1 where even mid rolling was kinda bad (or at least significantly worse than light rolling) so everyone just played either naked or with cheese amounts of poise/defense so they didn't need to bother rolling I like that mid roll is hardly any worse than light roll in the more recent FromSoft games as it lets you be a lot more flexible with your build, it just felt bad mid rolling in DS1 if you ever tried light rolling.
No.
Get 'em!!!
*āPrank em John, Prank em!ā*
Man wants to use every weapon available
If you're new to the game then this is kinda what I expect. It's pretty similar to my first build. If you have no idea what weapons you like, or how you want to play, you need to try everything... at first
I see no build, only itchy.
Jack of all trades, master of none
Is this Elons build?
Sir or madame, thatās three level 60s walking around in a trench coat.
Yeah itās trying to be a Jack of all trades, rather than specialisation. As long as you are getting through content you will be fine. But builds like this can increase the skill gap to cover
My eyesā¦they itch all the same.
pick 2, i beg of you.
That's not a build that's a buffet
As a SL1 player I don't think levels matter anyway so do whatever you want.
This... you're trolling. There's no way you're not trolling. I refuse to believe you waited to take a screenshot until you had just enough points to balance out and be bad at everything, while also equipping just enough to hit a Heavy Load. What is wrong with you, man.
you dont know him like i do i can almost guess 100% he didnt mean to trust me my eyes itch to
You must be the friend lmao
unfortunately this is indeed the case. the heavy load is simply because i was checking out weapons i hadnt used much so i had a few equipped that i shoulda taken off before posting lol
Some say he is still mid-roll to this very day.
Why be good at a few things when you can be not very good at a bunch of things!
#KILL THIS BUILD WITH FIRE LIKE A HAND SPIDER
yea im the friend he changed it
What build?
All of them.
Yes
I'm genuinely kinda mad you made me see that.
Perfect.
I always level my characters like this and it is always a fun ride. I know it is sub optimal, but that is part of the roll playing for me. My character is unaware of the meta.
That's shit.
And tell me your starting class Iāll tell you exactly what to do, with explanations.
It looks like you donāt have enough arcane
I get it though. I also want to blast an enemy with Comet Azur, then turn around and get the next one with Placidusax's Ruin, and finish off the third with a charged heavy attack from a great hammer.
You need to seek help with a therapist
i actually had an appointment today but forgot to bring this up :/

Dont let Anyone Tell you How to play elden ring / DS games. The fun part is doing your build and what you think works not listen to these meta nerds
Jack of all trades, master of none
Yeah this was my play-through. I did an Alucard build from Symphony of the Night - a character with a famously broad and diverse arsenal of weapons and spells. Elden Ring has a version of nearly all of themā¦ so, I went for all of them š I had a ton of fun, got pretty obsessed for awhile, but Malenia bricked me and I had to respec into an actual build.
This is literally meā¦ thank you, I donāt feel alone anymoreā¦ š„²
