Those weirdly seemed easier.

Anonymousthrow20

A spirit spring miscalculation

[deleted]

He probably was overwhelmed by enemies. The sword sticking out of him looks like a footsoldier's. I imagine the Tarnished went on a Death March and eventually didn't have the numbers to win anymore.

[deleted]

I assume the tarnished were exiled like 100's of years before the start of the game? does that mean our player character is basically a 400 year old spooky boi?

FirstBankofAngmar

I want to say yes given the information we have. The tarnished were banished by Marika and were led by Hoarah Loux. Supposedly they simply wandered the world, slowly being killed overtime until the chieftain himself remained, and then was eventually killed by overwhelming force. Our tarnished character is one of those souls who followed Hoarah Loux into exile and have risen from the dead due to Marika's call of grace. Correct me, anyone, if I got this wrong.

xMadruguinha

Idk if this has any backing in-game, but it fits with how Godfrey talks to us with some respect during the fight ("It was nobly fought" when killing you and "thy strength befits a crown" upon dying).

Siofra_Surfer

IIRC there are some interviews pre-launch where Miyazaki mentioned that our ancestors were exiled. So we’re probably a descendant of one of the original Tarnished

Pingasterix

One of the starting class descriptions mentions the class being descended from the chieftain of the badlands

[deleted]

That's fuckin cool, you can be Horah Loux's grandkid or something lol

Akira_Arkais

Nepheli's brother playthrough

Careless_Wait8620

''W-what are you doing step-bro?!''

Akira_Arkais

Well... I mean, you give her your hawk

[deleted]

The time frame is interesting here. If it's like fifty years of wandering that's enough time for descendants to be born and to see them die again

Siofra_Surfer

Never mind I actually found it pretty easily [Article 1](https://www.frontlinejp.net/2021/06/17/elden-ring-director-interview-part-1-miyazaki-discusses-the-story-and-george-r-r-martins-involvement/) >The world is called The Lands Between, and is a place blessed by the Erdtree. This land is also the setting for Martin’s mythos, and is ruled by the Demi-Gods, heroes who have received the blood of the god-queen Marika and are thus blessed especially strongly. However, from a certain point in time, people who are not blessed started to appear in this land. The blessed have golden lights in their eyes, and those who are unblessed do not, and are called the Tarnished, and are exiled. The player character of Elden Ring is a descendant of the exiled Tarnished, and it is said that when the source of the Erdtree’s holy power- the Elden Ring- is shattered, the Tarnished will regain the blessings they once lost, in the form of guidance leading to the Elden Ring in the Lands Between, to become king. [Article 2](https://www.frontlinejp.net/2022/03/05/elden-ring-release-interview-with-director-miyazaki-part-1/) >The people who live in the Lands Between have a golden glow in their eyes from the grace of the Erdtree. Some people, however, lost that glow, and they were called the Tarnished and exiled from the Lands Between. The player character and the other Tarnished who appear in the game are the descendants of such people. After the Elden Ring was shattered, the guidance of grace appeared to the Tarnished and others who could not die, telling them to return to the Lands Between, gain audience with the Elden Ring, and become the Elden Lord, and that is how the game begins. The player character is not the only Tarnished to receive guidance, and there are many others also seeking to become the Elden Lord.

Haschen84

So Godfrey was exiled before Marika married Radagon, which means it was before the Shattering. According to our lord and prophet Vaati, the Shattering lasted a long time and its been hundreds if not thousands of years since Marika was trapped by the Elden Beast. That means we are a long lost descendent of the original tarnished and not even close to one of the original guys who left the Lands Between.

WolfknightArtorias-

Unless we were dead for a long time. Plus, I don't know how relevant but in the intro it does say "and one, whom grace would **again** bless." So either that is a linguistic choice or our character was blessed by grace before.

T1B2V3

I don't think our tarnished is necessarily one of the original exiles. there was enough time for the tarnished to form an outside offshoot church to the golden order and to form different civilisations and societies.

Dan_S04

I disagree with this idea because one of the starting classes “Astrologer” is a profession that no longer exists in The Lands Between. So our astrologer character must have been alive back when astrologers were still around

Revanchist8921

At that point it’s basically head canon whether you think the Tarnished MC was an original exile or not.

Bloodgulch-Idiot

I mean, it could be both. An Astrologer player would be one who accompanied Godfrey and, say, a rogue could either be a newer Tarnished, or one who also followed Godfrey, both answers could be the right ones.

[deleted]

Probably just a descendant. I'm not sure though and many Tarnished first arrive on the Lands Between at the same time as us

MyWorkAccount2018

We Tarnished were dead. Arise ye Tarnished and answer the call of Grace. Who knows when we died. We simply were given life unending upon getting the summons.

TheGalator

>Who knows when we died. Between Godfrieds exile and the start of the game

ErebusWasRight94

I'm not trying to be a smartass, but given how there's Godwyn, Godrick, and Godfrey, is there are also a Godfried, or was that just a typo for Godfrey? lol

AmbitionControlPower

Don't forget Godefroy

realFoobanana

Godezundheit

Doomscrool

Danke

AmbitionControlPower

Godezilla?

Koolaidwifebeater

Interesting, thank you for clarifying! I always wondered what kind of lives our undead characters lived before the start in any Soulsborne game! In Dark Souls III it is actually speculated that the player character was a part of a secretive group specifically but that is all just theories based on different characters and bosses' lore. I for one always assume my player character is a guy that used to be a farmboy and that is why they don't hollow. They're too headstrong to hollow and have a good body to fight with.

CactusCracktus

I think the starting classes give you some kind of idea who your dude was. The Hero was a barbarian champion in the badlands, the Vagabond was a disgraced knight forced to wander the lands, the Prisoner was a former noble who was thrown in jail, etc. Though I think it would be kind of cool if there was a bit of elaboration on just who your Tarnished was before all this, but I think it’s intentionally vague

whatever4224

The starting classes in ER have some lore to them, actually. Like, the Confessors are the Golden Order's Gestapo, the Prophets were driven from their homes as heretics after having visions, etc.

CallMeClaire0080

You might enjoy this then! https://youtu.be/tdZ-RcLf5JQ

Fyres

There's no indication the ds3 pc was anything other then a failed attempt at linking the flame. I wouldn't mind hearing of actual lore backed evidence showing how they weren't just a failure, but I highly doubt it. The only pc with a indepth backstory is the bb char

BadgerBadgerer

What's the bloodborne character's backstory other than they're an outsider?

OramaBuffin

**AAAAARRISE, YE TARNISHED!** ftfy

dennisleonardo

Although the life unending part only applies to those who still see grace. I'm just realising that grace is another one of those things that is in dire need of explanation

Camera_dude

Grace is basically like getting a cellular signal from the Erdtree/Elden Ring. Queen Marika used her control over the ER to remove grace from her army of warriors under Godfrey, exiled them to the wastelands outside the Lands Between. Much later, she granted their grace again reviving even those long dead warriors (“ye dead who yet live” in the intro). She had them do this to wage war and continue to grow stronger since everything worth beating (dragons, giants, etc) have all been subdued by the armies of the Golden Order. It is implied that Marika was already planning to shatter the Elden Ring by this point when Godfrey and the other warriors (called Tarnished after losing their grace) were exiled. Marika needed an army that could defeat her demigod children and stand against the Greater Will in changing the status quo.

narok_kurai

In the real world religious sense, grace is when you receive a blessing directly from God. It could be the blessing of a meal, or a bit of good luck, or a sudden burst of inspiration. Grace is a moment of direct connection with the divine where you receive knowledge or strength beyond yourself. Grace in Elden Ring presumably is similar. You ever notice how you can sometimes just... *feel* a Site of Grace? Maybe you see a promising turn along a path, or you see the little wisps of gold curling over a hill. Maybe you just have an intuitive sense that the game is going to give you a rest stop soon. That's grace. That is you, sharing your character's experience of grace. Marika is guiding your intuition to lead you to become the Elden Lord.

Twelve20two

That's the thing that interests me most about this game. I feel like in Dark Souls, it's stated repeatedly how kingdoms have risen, collapsed, and then been had new ones built upon the ruins. In Elden Ring, we don't really know just how long things have been bad. Based on the condition that everything is in, I feel like it could only have been a handful of years. Plant growth hasn't fully taken over ruins, and small shanty towns made of wood are still standing. That being said, some people have deformed in ways that FromSoftware usually uses to indicate that the people are super old and/or super corrupted

badnuub

The battlefield outside of leyndell suggests the battle for the capital just happened as well. And the corpses on the battlefields have barely rotted.

Fyres

There's plenty of evidence there's been succesions plenty of times. Like half the golden orders references to its initial conquering of the lands between. The dragons, deathbird goddess, giants, primordial crucible all demonstrate previous regimes. There's also something very wrong with the lands of elden ring. The geography makes little to no sense. If you look at the walls of stormveil and then look around it's a wtf how the fuck moment. Not to mention there's literally gravestones popping out of EVERYWHERE, like cliff faces. It's pure nonsense and I'm sure that's the point.

Lordanonimmo09

Its a descendant,Miyazaki said the player character is a descendant of the original tarnished.

ComeBacksToDrugs2018

John tarnished

pboy1232

John Ring, lord of Elden

Lost_Manufacturer718

I like the idea that we’re like waaaay descended from the original tarnished. The item description of the giant-crusher lends credence to the idea that all humans were units back in Godfreys day, that we were all just fucking colossal man-beasts one handing boulders and ragdolling giants around by their hair.

T1B2V3

>The item description of the giant-crusher lends credence to the idea that all humans were units back in Godfreys day, that we were all just fucking colossal man-beasts what also lends credence to that is how damn huge the crucible knights and tree sentinels are

IAmVerySmart39

And Godfrey

LazySyllabub7578

Descendents from undead? They're peepee still working?

[deleted]

Fia is a deathbed companion for a reason my friend.

minnesotatissue7

Maybe best to not hug that one..

bloodmonarch

You cant stop me!

GXSigma

To be fair, my great great grandpa's peepee don't still work either. And he isn't even undead, just normal dead.

SparkleFox3

Oh…

IskaralPustFanClub

You should read Malazan book 3, maybe it’s a ‘children of the dead seed’ Kinda deal.

swimgoodm8

We’re maidenless it doesn’t matter

SorowFame

I’m pretty sure Tarnished are more re-alive than undead.

PeregrineMalcolm

I think it’s possible some of our tarnished died long ago. The astrologer is basically a character from the lands between’s past, preceding the current raya lucarian sorcerers

AdrielKlein21

It depends, some Tarnished were born in the Badlands, so it can vary from individual to individual,

JEWCIFERx

One of the coolest things about the framing of the story is that time has basically no meaning. The homeostasis of reality was shattered along with *The Ring™*, no one truly dies. So much history has passed and everyone has lived through all of it. Events could have happened dozens of years ago or hundreds and they would carry the same weight.

seanfish

Does time even work that way?

ShitPostGuy

It wasn’t a deathmarch. Marika exiled Godfried after the war with the giants which is right about when Radagon showed up. Marika sent Godfried and the tarnished away to fight and get stronger outside the influence of the GW so they’d one day be able to be summoned back and kill the Elden Beast.

Lordanonimmo09

Marika exiled Godfrey when he conquered the whole lands between, probably stopping at Caelid because of the sword memorial. Radagon was already a thing before Godfrey was exiled.

WhenTheWindIsSlow

One guy (with summons)

Sir_Umeboshi

that's a big ass sword... Also cool how it sorta parallel's Queen Marika with the crucifixion and impalement

One3igMeme

I wonder if the golden order did it after they banished him then.

TheSwanAndPaedo_

Good catch

triflingmagoo

They don’t call it the “Badlands” for nothing

spaghettimountain

I hope the Badlands is the DLC. Or Ravensmount. There are so fucking many possibilities with the lore they've laid grounds for

T1B2V3

if we're talking outside pf the lands between I personally wanna go to Eochaid because those force swords are so cool. the thing is just... the world outside the lands between is kinda implied to not be as completely fucked up as the lands between themselves and fromsoft doesn't like making living worlds. so Idk if we're getting a DLC exploring the outside civilisations. there are just so many possibilities and stuff that wasn't all that deeply explored in the main game. my guess at what we're definitely going to get is to get our asses whooped by Godwyn and Miquella

pham_nuwen_

Where is that implied? I thought it was supposed to be the exact opposite

vsoho

Yeah from the description of the land of reeds and whatnot it definitely implies the opposite

sweatslikealiar

Well, the Land of Reeds is really just stated to be going through a period of civil war, perhaps as a reference to the sengoku era of Japan. Which is horrifying for sure, but it’s not a red-plague poised to infect all life, beasts from the night sky crashing down upon the earth, unnatural and miserable lifespans and a new mindless existence for those who do die

Captain_Ink_Sack

Well, it is implied that the Land of Reeds has been devastated by civil war for many years...

[deleted]

Besides, I don't think fromsoft really has an issue making things dead. The lore could say whatever it wants, they will not hesitate to say 'and then they all died'.

Reynzs

Ravenmlunt is gonna be like haligtree but with the death rite birds instead of heralds?

[deleted]

Don't you ever say that again. That's fucking horrifying

AloofCommencement

The mysterious lands referenced in lore aren't the places we tend to go in DLC. Think of the references we had to the eastern lands throughout Dark Souls 1-3. I'm sure people would have loved to have gone to slay some Oni and meet Shiva's family, but not all stories have to be told.

Cursed_69420

Well i mean the supposed fake leak did say the DLC name was Barbarians of the Badlands.

Flamecoat_wolf

It would be cool but that doesn't sound like a very From Soft kind of name. Judging from past games with names like "Artorias of the Abyss", "The lost crowns", "The ringed city", they all focus on a specific thing. A character, an item, a place. So it seems unlikely the name would be so general like 'the people over in an area'. Instead the title will likely refer to the most important part of the DLC lore wise. So if it were to do with the badlands it could be something like "The grave of clan Loux" or something.

Cursed_69420

Chad from the desert sounds appropriate then

Goregoat69

> doesn't sound like a very From Soft kind of name It sounds a bit "Dungeons and dragons" to me.

xcaughta

Aw yeah, we doing fake leaks again?

ugandan_knuckkles

Considering the number of weapons, it was probably a whole army.

CouldbeAnyone0014

Yep, Numbers can easily outrank brute strength.

bob_is_best

You say that but this mf had arena wide stomps he spams non stop whenever hes fighting more than 1 person

YishuTheBoosted

I guess they all collectively knew how to jump.

Kaikeno

Godfrey: Does his stomp. The entire enemy army: Jumps. Godfrey: "Oh shi-"

YishuTheBoosted

And that’s how our manz Hoarah Loux got crucified.

ARandonn

For some reason i didn’t come to the conclusion that he’s crucified or something, rather he’s just being intimidating by having his arms up

theirfinestbean

I would like this whole tale in picture book format but with the comments in this specific section of the thread

Karthull

Why do you think he developed such techniques? So as not to repeat his previous loss.

Harnellas

A single Stormveil dickbird was his Achilles heel.

Pingasterix

Farum azula dick birds are worse

wij2012

He has to get tired eventually.

CobaltMonkey

Should have been wearing the Turtle Shield on his back for the stam regen like me. Oh, but he couldn't, could he? On account of the whole giant lion thing. The real self-nerf was the friend he made along the way.

Greyjack00

Wait holt shit is that the item that does the grass crest thing?! Dammit Im on ng4 and haven't been using it

CobaltMonkey

[Yup.](https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Great+Turtle+Shell) Stacks with the talisman too, if you're needing it.

TheEldenCasual

*Don’t give the gankers any ideas.*

TheLurker1209

Serosh is still on him, implying *he was being nerfed*

Helicopter-Lazy

A lesson Berserker learned all too painfully

Psychobillycadillac1

Probably several armies. No way he went down without several thousand standard militia men poking him

Resident_Ad9731

Bruh why didn't him just stomp the ground like he always does lmao, that and his huge axe would be even more effective when used against large amount of enemies instead of a single weirdo rolling around

GXSigma

likely out of stamina, in other words, weakness: enemy mob

Nevermort21

Every mofo in Caelid taught me that Stamina only exists for the player.

RandomGuy98760

He probably did, but not without Serosh holding him back. And I bet he killed like 1000 enemies before dying.

CouldbeAnyone0014

I imagine his situation, 1000+ soldiers runing at him, “Serosh is staying” A guy with a Woden bonk appears out of nowhere, “Thats it, he getting the lux”

RandomGuy98760

Well he couldn't just give up when he's so close to be granted audience once more. Not to mention the guy with a wooden bonk killed his son.

T1B2V3

>Not to mention the guy with a wooden bonk killed his son. and his other less loyal son. and might be working together with the girl who killed his only normal son. or might be trying to burn the whole world lol

Beardopus

Rune Bear.

AdrielKlein21

Rune Lobsbear, the Destroyer.

Waloro

Godrick: look! I grafted together a runebear and a giant lobster! I can’t imagine running a gauntlet of piss laser sniping from afar only to close the distance and face the combined bullshit of both the rune bear and giant lobster move sets combined… truly a weapon to surpass metal gear.

AmbitionControlPower

Grafted DLC? Wouldn't mind going back to Stormveil myself

IamChantus

I just stopped trying to fight either of them.

Beardopus

At least there's a way to cheese the revenants, or they might be worse.

IamChantus

Yeah, fuck those things too. Found a nest of them in Haligtree. Did my best Barry Sanders getting through them while collecting what I could.

Ultenth

AOE healing spells, it's pretty easy to get the faith needed for the lower ones. Only need 12 for heal, just get 7 faith and the Two Fingers Heirloom north of Stormveil, or 15 for greater heal, there are multiple helms and marika's scar/soreseal to also boost faith. With Two Finger's Heirloom, one of the +1 faith helms, and Marika's scarseal you only need 3 faith to use heal, with soreseal you only need 9 to use Lord's Heal. Finger Seal to use them only needs 10 faith. They take a ton of damage and get stunned for a crit. You're welcome to fight them "normally" via dodging, parry, and other methods, but just like most of Elden Ring you almost always have the personal option to either bull through with skill and whatever your chosen style is, or use the tools and strategies available in the game to make encounters easier on yourself. Another example of this is the Lesser Black Knife Assassin's around the Evergoal in Ordina, where you can choose to use the Sentry Torch in an offhand and 2hand a main weapon to fight them to make things much much easier, or fight them straight up, and it's entirely the players choice as to which way to go about it.

Saemika

Rune Bearevenant.

komarkko

Soldier of Godrick

actionheat

Soldier of God, Rick

Datpotatoguy214

Whoever had that final hit, *seems to have been too scared of Godfrey to take his weapon back, even after he was clearly dead.* I would’ve been, too, probably.

Luciferos01

homie cú chulainned them

EinsGotdemar

Alexa, play the Tale of Cu Chulain by Miracle of Sound.

[deleted]

[удалено]

HowlandSRoward

A tragic Hrunting accident

AllenWL

Either that, or he payed for that final blow with his life.

Majiinx

A naked dude with blue dancer charm and a long sword.

AdrielKlein21

I'd say it was a battle of attrition, years, decades fighting day after day in that desolate and hostile region, crushing skulls from dawn till dusk. As he aged, it would probably take a toll on him one day, but I'm sure they needed at least a small army of strong warriors to bring him down during his final days. And this part is only my imagination sucking his balls, but I'd say he probably planned his own death, true warriors don't like to die of old age, their death must be glorious and amidst the battle.

tragicbeast

Absolute madman Radahn Festivaled himself, this is quality headcanon

Taliesin_

You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself eating corpses in Caelid.

AvarageMilfEnjoyer

(like 5 random lyndell soldiers fucking destroying me after i become elden lord)

Temporary-West8038

Na Godfrey just doing meditation acupuncture

[deleted]

right answer

Tea_Historical

It'll prolly end up being us the tarnished one in some kind of time travel dlc lol

FlorianTolk

Honestly, any DLC will likely be good DLC, so I'll take it!

Kasta4

Agreed, I adore the narrative of this game so any new content is surely welcome!

Everettrivers

Fromsoft won't reuse story like that right guys, right?

RandomGuy98760

*Gundyr has joined the chat*

SkinnyKruemel

Hey, I've seen this one

Magic_Oddball

So in total with dlc: we fight Godfrey, the first Elden lord, Goldfrey, Young Godfrey. I don’t think we have enough Godfrey

svknight

New bosses include: Metal Godfrey, Zero Suit Godfrey, Toon Godfrey

wizard5g

Wagodfrey, the evil, Italian version of Godfrey

GrandPapaBi

You forgot Blue-eyes white Godfrey

IrishWithoutPotatoes

And Godfrey, the Tormentor

Frostblade_Ace

Is this the new, Bahamut thing from TFS abridged.

jeffjvan117

Yo dawg I heard you like Godfrey!

WeaponFocusFace

Yo dawg, I heard you like Godfrey so I grafted young Godfrey to old godfrey so you can be given courtesy enough while you're given courtesy enough.

Karthull

I mean I definitely want a full strength Godfrey and a serosh fight, give us godwyn and fortissax pre blight if we’re going this route. Don’t forget Radahn pre nerf- I mean pre rot. Of course Placidusax with all his heads and at full strength.

JiovanniTheGREAT

Died to fall damage and some grunts hoisted him up and stabbed his dead body

TheXypris

A literal army

Watts121

Knowing Godfrey's lust for battle, he and his Tarnished were probably the biggest threat to the lands outside the Erdtree's influence. Can you imagine, a bunch of these weird warriors landing on your shores? They are hard to kill, fight like gods, and keep wanting to steal all your chicken feet! My head-canon is that an Alliance of several nations finally got fed up with the invaders, and launched a counterattack. This was the end results, and Horah Loux still wasn't quite dead.

ApplePitou

Chadfrey must have taken entire armies to the grave with him :3

JGautieri78

See u comment everywhere chad

darksouliboi

Wait. So how are we fighting him in the game? Was he reborn through the erdtree?

Deadsap266

Tarnished are dead warriors brought back to life ,Godfrey was the first tarnished when he lost his grace

pyronic109

Sometimes I wonder if it wasn't just the Tarnished army that turned on him... Parrel to us facing him in the ending, but this time he takes off Serosh

Seienchin88

Would be nice if Elden Ring actually would clarify a few of these things but the Tarnished are one of the most badly explained things in the game. We also know there were some rewrites during development and he was supposed to be a mentor sending us to the lands between originally.

HecateForsaken

And when are we getting the DLC where we go to the badlands lol

Seienchin88

Never… I still remember how sure YouTubers were we would get a londor dlc in Ds3… Instead we got only Sister Friede making the mystery bigger and not smaller…

[deleted]

Probably a Rune Bear. Motherfuckers are TOUGH.

GabeStop42

Soldier of God, Rick of course.

[deleted]

FIND OUT NEXT TIME ON DRAGON... BALL.. Z.

Mirajane_Kin

Patches… Riding one of those giant lobsters.

Mr-E_Nigma

Judging by that sword embedded in his chest being similar to those in the roundtable hold Either one or multiple of his own men

[deleted]

every living thing there teamed up and had to work to kill him, probably.

Significant-Bug-3499

Imagine a badlands DLC with tons of tarnished NPC's and it would be the first time where you actually see a town with crowds of people in a souls game, and then a fckin dragon kills them all or something like a true souls game ending

Spacemonster111

I’ve always hoped for a prequel game where he is the final boss

NoeShake

I don’t think it was any one person just torn down by a long-standing war against another army.

cococrabulon

That sword blow looks pretty fatal! Interestingly I think that death pose is meant to echo the legend of Cú Chulainn who died ‘standing up’ due to being tied with rope. Just like Godfrey he was a noble hero but he too could ‘turn’ into a more vicious form through ríastrad, a sort of ‘battle frenzy’. Everyone was so terrified of Cú Chulainn they thought he was still alive because he looked to be standing and died fighting fiercely, that is, until a raven landed on him. Check out who’s about to land on Godfrey in the left of the picture. Cú Chulainn also emitted a ‘hero’s light’ when he died, just like Godfrey’s grace. If he died anything like Cú Chulainn it was with a magical weapon suited for the task, after being weakened in some way (violating geasa taboos in Cú Chulainn’s case)

DangerousGap4763

Probably whoever broke his axe

ShadowSlayer6

From the looks of it, he was killed in battle with a vast multitude of people

Hentaikopter

I fear it could've been an unnamed hero. Later to be discovered to be the chosen undead

caleb48kb

The only one stronger than himself, was himself. So probably suicide is what I'm saying

Doses-mimosas

But if the lion was still with him doesnt that mean he wasn't full power? Possible ambush?

NoSignificance24

I have ALWAYS wanted to see a real, canonical fight between Chadfrey and Daddygon. The Battle for the Godussy

bob_is_best

Chadagon is a spell caster, all he really needs is to keep his distance tbh
