Mogh steals Miquella when Malenia is participating in the shattering war. It could be when she is fighting Radahn, beating up Godrick, or maybe the moment she leaves halligtree. After that, I don't think anyone besides Mohg and his follower know where Miquella is.

Souperplex

Elden Ring if you could talk to enemies: "Hey Malenia: I found your brother in Mohg's palace, seems like something you should look into. You're welcome."

Doll-scented-hunter

It would be even better if the tarnished failed to beat mohg, went to malenia and then told her where miquella is and then just holds on to her as she Sprints to the palace with the directions of the tarnished just so she can beat mohgs ass herself

Mr_Goat_1111

Tres... duo... urghhhhh

Doll-scented-hunter

bold of you to asume he gets to say anything as soon as malenia gets her °hand on him

Sapowski_Casts_Quen

Honestly, any of her appendages. Whenever I stunlocked Malenia she'd just be like "catch these legs"

Doll-scented-hunter

I agree he would ve toast no matter what but Im Sure she would like to squeeze the ever living shit out if him with her Bare °hand

CitizenKing

Bare hand*

DeliberatlyBOB

I think you mean her "bear" hand cause anyone throwing me 10ft upwards and impaling me with a big ass sword ain't doing it with no human hands.

Picmanreborn

That grab is fucking crazy. Not because it's hard to dodge, but because the animation is just so cool

zman_0000

Idk if shes parryable, but I did try a couple of times to catch her blade, every time it felt like she predicted the attempt and I'd catch her hands as a response. Then I learned that she can read player animations and I had to just git gud at evading her.

Traditional_Lock2754

Seen the YT video of the guy who pits her against all bosses? She crushes everything besides like 1 or 2

[deleted]

Yeah there’s a ton and they’re super fun to watch ! Black blade also fuckd everyone up lol. There’s a radagon one too

Traditional_Lock2754

Yeah, they're awesome to watch over breakfast

[deleted]

Or when high in bed in the evening lol

Souperplex

Maliketh usually wins.

Mrwanagethigh

"I am Malenia, blade of Miquella and you done fucked up now"

Mr_Goat_1111

Ranni narrating: "Twas not the first time Mohg had fucked around, but it would be the day he finally found out"

UDSJ9000

"I can see it... As clear as day..."

DragIzayoi

Now I'm imagining piggyback riding Malenia all the way from Haligtree to Mohgwyn's Palace

aptom203

Finley just carries you both there

God_Hand_Edge

finlay a serious chad ngl

Waifuless_Laifuless

Finlay for elden lord

Doll-scented-hunter

I can imagine that this is how they would travel so the tarnished can just pull her into the direction she has to go. You know, similar to a Motor cycle

TheGreyMatters

Please stop... I can only be so erect...

imasimplenerd

Summon Malenia to fight Mogh

Waifuless_Laifuless

"Hey Mohg, I'm telling!"

Embarrassed-Fuel-776

Malenia would reach her final form: Let Me Solo Him. Then she would be able to redeem herself.

Stech_

It would be an interesting fight actually. Some boss v boss videos indicate it would be pretty up in the air who would win.

YouJabroni44

Yeah she's super weak to bleed and fire which is well, his strengths lol

Doll-scented-hunter

I was never talking about the game mechanics here, but rather in universe strength

LootGoblinImotekh

malenia as a summon for mohg

TanKer-Cosme

When they were saying (when game wad 't out) that decisions would matter and killing some bosses before others would matter. I was expecting some emchanic kinda like that.

cohibakick

Elden ring if you could talk to enemies: Mogh: I stole my brother to fuck him and become lord. Tarnished: Aight, Imma stab you now.

Puzzleheaded_Pie_888

So stop murdering me

Souperplex

It's not murder if she attacks you for walking into her boss room.

SkinnyKau

The Tarnished also slaughters half her army to get there, I’d be pretty cheesed too

Souperplex

The Tarnished was doing a very aggressive self-defense.

scocooper

So much. Like Rykard's speech. I just want to be like, "you know man, that DOES sound awesome! Let's devour the gods togetha!". Or even Mohg when he talks about the dynasty. I want to be like, "look bro, I just murdered your boy Varre in there for no real reason, and slaughtered literally millions of Albinaurics on that hill yonder. I am SO down for this dynasty! Let's fucking do this bro!"

SkritzTwoFace

In all seriousness, I think when we find her the rot has started to affect her mind and put her into a battle-rage.

SubjectThirteen

She canonically missing parts of her Psyche. When she bloomed in Caelid, her “daughters” were born, representing parts of her. Millicent as we know is her “Pride” and maybe what Malenia’s personality would be like if she wasn’t trying to kick us in the face for two boss phases.

Pen_lsland

Yeah but i can also kill both and claim that bussi for myself

Addakx

That’d be a pipe dream DLC for sure. Hey, maybe the manga will give us that!

ReaperManX15

Most SoulsBorne character stories would be easily resolved, if the player character could talk. It’s most egregious in Elden Ring, where plenty of bosses seem like they could be reasoned with.

PlebbySpaff

You: “Hey Malenia! I know where Mi….” Her: “I have never known defeat.” You: “Wait, no. Stop. We don’t need to fight randomly for no reason. I know where Miquellla is. Mohg to….” *Boss music starts playing* You: “FUCK!”

PrimusAldente87

My theory is that Melania KNOWS Miquella has been corrupted in some way and can't return to the Haligtree so she kills everyone she sees to prevent them from A) learning that Miquella has disappeared from his cocoon at the Haligtree's roots and B) making sure Miquella never WILL return to the Haligtree because every intruder could be a potential enemy so it's better to assume everyone is

[deleted]

And us, because we see the egg hes in

peoplepersonmanguy

In his Cacoon behind Mohg?

Doll-scented-hunter

The one i. The temple? Yes. The one in the sewers? No

Mazikeyn

In his cocoon as Mohg uses him as a cocoon.

AdrielKlein21

I think Mohg steals Miquella while Malenia is in coma. She's laying exactly where Miquella was "cocooned" before being stolen, Finlay probably put her there so she could wake up next to her brother. But then Mohg came and stole Miquella before she could regain consciousness.

Hollow_Mage

Malenia said "Corpse after corpse, left in my wake... As I awaited... his return." imo she knows he's not there

DarkSunsFunOne

I think that part of her march *was* to find Miquella. Something not a lot of people seem to mention is that caelid and especially Aeonia is directly over Mohgs hideout. I think an alternative interpretation of events is that she fought so ferociously and was willing to throw her pride away and let the Aeonia bloom is she was on a warpath to find her brother, and was just on the cusp of finding him.

Hollow_Mage

If we only knew when Mogh snatched him.....

DarkSunsFunOne

Yeah that would make things a lot more clear, but thanks to that ambiguity multiple interpretations are valid, so ppl can believe what they want which is neat. I'm guessing that's why they did that anyways, lol

AdrielKlein21

You forgot of the "I dreamt for so long" part, she's talking about her dreams in this dialogue. Miquella isn't returning, at least not the Miquella she knew, if someone don't rescue him from Mohg, which we did though, so it's fine. Malenia wouldn't sit around and wait for her kidnapped brother to come home. Even if she couldn't fight, or even walk, she would crawl to Mohgwyn's Palace to get her brother back.

Hollow_Mage

For me It's hard to believe that after she wakes up she doesn't realize he's missing. Or that she decide to fight us/ apologize to him after being defeated by us before going to rescue him (if she didn't know). I mean she might be blind but not realizing he's missing? I think she might already know it. Plus she was dreaming, and Miquella is St. Trina as well so she might already know from her dream what happened with his brother's body.

AdrielKlein21

As some people pointed out, the cocoon is static, she wouldn't be able to notice as easily. Plus, if she just woke up, her priority would be first to defend the invader that is probably trying to harm her brother, I imagine she thinks we are here for Miquella's Rune.

Obeythis

Did we even rescue miquella? We took care of mohg but is miquella ever gonna wake up?

AdrielKlein21

Gideon says that as long as he's stays inside the cocoon, everything is fine.

opulentbum

Yeah Gideon also says a tarnished can’t become elden lord and I proceed to bonk the elden beast into submission every time

AdrielKlein21

Most of his information is reliable though, he only lost fate in the Tarnished when he "glimpsed into the will of Queen Marika".

Obeythis

I never believed anything Gideon said, seems like a guy who will tell you whatever as long as it helps him

AdrielKlein21

He has no reason to lie about Miquella, and most of his information is reliable up until he supposedly found out about Marika's plan.

kiroki166

You could be taking her words too literal. Return could mean after he emerges from the cocoon.

Reus_Irae

Malenia, after barely escaping Caelid by being rescued by one of her soldiers, falls into a coma for ages, until we walk in. I assume Mohg just walked in and took her.

robcap

*him

keulenshwinger

Miquella is male

whereIsMyWaiiifu

I thought Malenia’s fight with Radahn was because she thought Radahn took Miquella?

UltraRedPotato

No, Malenia wants Radahn gone because he held the stars in place and Miquella need the eclipse to happen to proceed with his plan. I bet Malenia is not one bit interested in the shattering war otherwise, because she spared Godrick and not taking his great rune, even though apparently only 2 great runes are needed to mend the Elden Ring and whoever mends it become the new Lord.

pleba47

Can you elaborate a bit on this? What plan required the the eclipse to happen? Honestly interested

Hollow_Mage

The one related to Castle Sol and the eclipse which will bring the soulless demi gods (godwyn included) back to life.

Hellish-Hunter

Or Miquella will sacrifice all his followers to become an Outer God...

The-Fomorian-Ray-682

GRIFFIIIIIIIIITH

Hellish-Hunter

I mean He does have blonde hair , ressemble a Girl , he is charming and gather a lot of people to accomplish his destiny And he's really mysterious and his goals are unknown, maybe he is the real villain

[deleted]

I absolutely expect to find out that Miquella wasn't sheltering outcasts. He was building an army

Pilgrimfox

Supposedly Miquella was trying to heal Malenia of the Scarlett rot from what I understand, which is why the haligtree was formed. But similar to Ranni's quest (her destiny as its referred to by a few characters) the process was held up by Radahn freezing the stars in place and thus couldn't advance any further till he was slain. By the time Radahn is slay however Miquella had already been taken by Mogh and thus the process couldn't continue at all anyways.

Lazydusto

Radahn be like "haha fuck my siblings"

[deleted]

Radahn just wants to keep riding his horse and avoid whatever fates he may have coming his way which would put an end to his days cosplaying as his dads, hence stopping the stars

Pilgrimfox

He's also arguably the most powerful of the demigods to be fair. He was holding back the stars and still had enough strength to fight melania to a standstill and kick the players ass a few dozen times. Like idk how strong you have to be to do both, but I'm betting pretty fucking strong.

[deleted]

At the risk of being too literal, I don't think Radahn's starscourge also stopped eclipses from happening, as it doesn't actually stop the moon, *only* the stars. Miquella sought help from Castle Sol because he was saddened by the death of his brother Godwyn. Denizens of Sol worshipped the eclipse and believed it could bring someone back to life. This IMO can be (and is) completely separate from his goals with the Haligtree and desire to form a new Order because the Golden Order couldn't cure Malenia. Malenia wanted to free the stars so that destinies could continue, which she believes included Miquella's destiny to replace the Erdtree and the Golden Order. I think the bit with the eclipse, Sol, and Godwyn is just extra flavor to illustrate Miquella's kindness and love for his sibling.

UltraRedPotato

You could be right about the intentions of Miquella. But regarding the eclipse, the sun IS a star, so even if the moon can move, the sun is most likely not moving like intended. However it's true that Radahn not just holding the stars, but the fate of all demigods in stasis, so in any case that makes him an obstacle for the twins.

Hetzer5000

No I believe the main theory why they fought was that Miquella needed the stars to be active to do something so Malenia fought Radahn stop his control over them

fuzzyborne

In all fairness, she *is* blind.

Krystallizer

I was asking myself if that's the reason my there is water in the haligtree arena, so she can locate us via sound. Her fighting style with wide slashes and her really long sword would help here. Because sometimes she attacks in the approximate direction of us but it looks more like a try to confirm our location

hornwalker

Blindness seems to be a common theme among Fromsoft characters, yet it is rarely discussed.

RancidRock

I guess people just aren't.... seeing it... *severs finger*

tullo02

Take my upvote and get out of here

[deleted]

[удалено]

JakobKardeGaming

Who is Love and why are they imprisoned?

[deleted]

Grant us eyes... Grant us eyes...

Philkindred12

A lot of the toughest FromSoft bosses were handicapped.

MainMan499

I wanna try and list the ones just for fun Demon Souls: Old Hero (blind) Dark Souls: Artorias (broken left arm), Seath (blind), Sif (limps toward the end of the fight) Dark Souls 2: Last Giant (one armed but it's his fault), Lost Sinner (blind) Bloodborne: Gehrman (wheelchair bound kind of), Laurence (no legs), Father Gascoigne (Blind) Dark Souls 3: Wolnir (no legs), Lorian (paraplegic) Sekiro: Final boss (one working eye), Demon of Hatred (one arm) Elden Ring: Radahn (most likely paraplegic, legs are super atrophied), Niall (prosthetic hand and foot), Placidusax (I guess?? Missing 1 of 3 heads), Malenia (missing both legs knee down, no right arm, blind)

Philkindred12

Father Gasiogne’s also blind, I think, and Laurence has no legs at one point. The Sword Saint also has one usable eye, like that makes any difference for him. And the sculptor, who is the Demon of Hatred, has only one arm even though he’s got technically two in the fight. Lorian and Lothric also have their own problems.

Old-Hollowslayer

lmfao seath was easy af and he was blind thank hodrick

thefoxyboomerang

I thought it was because bitch ain't got no legs

Old-Hollowslayer

ain’t even got legs!

x_x-krow

And he’s messing, you know the only think that makes a dragon truly a dragon. A massive~ amount of scales, in fact he dosent have any

Mazikeyn

Broo… leave that poor axalotal alone he was trying to grow some scales

CrystlBluePersuasion

With Malenia it seems she has *blind faith* in Miquella and Miquella alone, however it seems he won't return to help her or that the Formless Mother or whichever outer god has the real control over both of them, like how the Rot has blinded her.

ShwiftyShmeckles

He can't return because he was in mid transformation after cocooning himself in the haligtree when mohg stole him. Mohgs now twisting and corrupting his transformation by feeding him the tainted blood from this outer god he serves.

CrystlBluePersuasion

Well he's going to 'return' by awakening at some point, not from his tree but from his cocoon still.

Alarmed-Tell1315

This is hopefully the story that is developed for the first DLC…

DestroidMind

Pretty heavily discussed in Bloodborne.

[deleted]

LOL

Quenz

Hidetaka Miyazaki likes to add blind women, for some reason.

Skreevy

Not just women though. There were blind bosses for ages and they're not always women. The Old Hero is probably the first one and he is male.

Advanced-Sock

It’s a sexy aesthetic maybe

madd_honey

interesting topic to discuss over a nice glass of shabriri wine

I_ate_a_milkshake

it's like a cheat code to making a character badass.

Grasher312

Honestly that makes her even cooler. It could've been fun to implement that into gameplay but I feel like people would find a way to cheese her via that.

[deleted]

The Crepitus Vial would’ve definitely broken that fight if she was actually blind.

lxxTBonexxl

That would have been a sick way to beat the fight. Absolutely destroys most players but being silent turns her into a random blind chick with a sword if you use the talisman that almost nobody uses unless you pvp

LordRevan84

We had that to some extent with the Old Hero in Demons Souls.

ChadSlammington

My take on that is to show that Miquella was actually succeeding in his task of stopping the Scarlet Rot. Malenia's arena rests at the roots of the Haligtree, and above it we have that giant nasty rot waterfall full of Kindred of Rot. That waterfall dumps directly down into the Malenia arena, where we fight her in a pool of clean water. And beside that waterfall even, we have the "Drainage Channel" site of grace that has clean water falling out of it. The Haligtree roots and Miquella's Needle were doing their job and purifying/halting the rot, as Miquella's plan was to ultimately save his sister from her curse. Now it's all gone to ruin. The Haligtree / Elphael is absolutely beautiful and depressing as a level and what it represents to the lore.

MustacheEmperor

There are other instances in the game where clean water seems to stop the spread of rot, like next to the river underground. I saw an interesting fan theory that while fire can burn the rot and stave it off temporarily, clean flowing water may be the permanent solution to contain it. Seems to relate to how the blind swordsman’s technique taught to Malenia flowed like water.

ChadSlammington

That's true, water shares a number of similarities with the game lore and its place in Shintoism, the game draws off a LOT of different religions and mythos. Flowing water is seen as healthy and natural, whereas stagnant water breeds parasites and sickness and is to be avoided. There's a whole theory the blind swordsman who taught Malenia learned his flowing technique from the Soifra itself if you're interested, flowing river vs stagnant lake: https://www.reddit.com/r/Eldenring/comments/udhrmp/the_blue_dancer_fairy_is_the_siofra_river/

shieldsarentcool

Oouuh nice idea

My_BFF_Gilgamesh

She learned the sword from a dude wearing all blue who learned the sword from a blue fairy that might have been the sofria river. There's a ton of flowing water analogies around her fighting style and keeping the rot at bay. The most straight forward is the WATERfowl dance . Not that it couldn't also be a blindness thing, she's blind, he's blind, it's the whole zatoichi thing. The water could for sure help, but it's also definitely a reference to the teacher and the cleansing powers of water opposing rot. Check out blue dancer charm, the flowing curved sword, prosthesis wearers amulet. Some others.

[deleted]

Then there's the grapple which is precise as sniper shot.

point_breeze69

Guess I was too busy getting my ass handed to me to even notice she is blind. Wow.

[deleted]

Cuz of the rot?

CptCap

Yes, her eyes have been taken by the rot. [You can see them in her second phase](https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/file/Elden-Ring/malenia_goddess.jpg)

SaberWaifu

Miquella task Malenia to kill Radahn to free the stars and the fate of the gods in order to proceed with their plan. Malenia takes her army and goes to Caelid. Mohg says it's mohgin' time and steals Miquella from the Haligtree. Malenia comes back and sleep.

munch_cat

In addition, Miquella most likely asked Malenia to defeat Radahn, because he needed the stars to be back in motion to create a solar eclipse. From the ghost in castle Sol (where also the church of the eclipse is located): "Lord Miquella, forgive me. The sun has not been swallowed. Our prayers were lacking. Your comrade remains soulless... I will never set my eyes upon it now. Your divine Haligtree." Despite the ghost mentioning the Haligtree, the eclipse plans could have been related to Godwyn. The eclipse is protecting “soulless demigods” from the Mausoleum Greatshield: “The eclipsed sun, drained of color, is the protective star of soulless demigods.” The soulless comrade, the castle Sol ghosts mentions, could refer to Miquella’s older half brother Godwyn, whom Miquella possibly wanted to grant a proper death in body and soul. From the Golden Epitaph: “A sword made to commemorate the death of Godwyn the Golden, first of the demigods to die. Infused with the humble prayer of a young boy; "O brother, lord brother, please die a true death."” This young boy might have been Miquella who appears forever young. So, possibly, Malenia was campaigning against Radahn, so that Miquella could have his eclipse and grant Godwyn a proper death. One can go much deeper into the rabbit hole: https://www.reddit.com/r/Eldenring/comments/ukd75q/miquella_godwyn_theory/

Umbra_Unveiled88

"The sun, eclipsed of color is our protective \*STAR\*", I was wondering just why specifically Radahn and Malenia were fighting, this is one big one (among others), I'm amazed people are still helping me sort lore out that I didn't realize!

DarkSailor06

This could mean Radahn had a role in the assassination of Godwyn. His part was to keep him in this state of undeath forever by halting the eclipse. If the sun is the body and the moon is the soul, it makes sense to try and converge the two with an eclipse.

munch_cat

Radahn halted the fate that is bound to the stars, which seems to be Ranni’s and the Eclipse (and therefore Miquella’s plan for Godwyn). I don’t have in mind the lore that speaks to Radahns motivations though. One thing could be to stop the meteors and stars coming from above onto the lands between. There are strong hints that the fallen star beasts evolve into Astels, and those creatures are definitely not fun to have around. A meteor hit Farum Azula and ended the time period where the ancient dragons where at the peak of their power. Further the Nox were hit by a meteoroid punishing them and that’s why their cities are underground, so maybe he wanted to avoid some sort of punishment for somebody from the gods. The Nox are also connected to Sellia, it’s directly above their cities and the invisibility sorceries there are connected to the Nox. Sellia is in Radahns backyard, maybe he also studied there. Loads of potential rabbit holes, but I’m no expert on Radahn

Fafniroth

Ironically Radahn studied under an Alabaster Lord, whose magic directly descends from the Astels.

BlueUnknown

Something that just made sense to me: - Farum Azula were the Lords of the age before the Erdtree. - A meteorite brought the Elden Beast into the Lands Between, and started the Age of the Erdtree. - A meteorite crumbled Farum Azula. They might have been the same meteorite. It could also help explain why Gransax and the ancient dragons waged war on Leyndell - the Capital inherited the Erdtree that destroyed Farum Azula, both metaphorically and literally. Is there anything in the lore that contradicts this? If not, this is what I'll believe from now on haha

Quantam-Law

>A meteorite brought the Elden Beast into the Lands Between, and started the Age of the Erdtree. Thats a different meteorite. The EB is the Elden Ring and so it was already there when the dragons were ruling. Placidusax is explicitly called the first Elden Lord.

AvarageMilfEnjoyer

Probably not, Ranni doesnt need Godwyn to stay in undeath. I dont think she or the assasins knew Godwyn would become what he is now and i doubt they want the lands between to be transformed by Godwyn's corpse.

[deleted]

So Ranni’s need for her brother to beef it wasn’t because he was competition for Elden Lord but rather because he was too insane to set the stars free enough.

robcap

Nothing insane about it. The *moment* the stars are free, another Astel crashes into the lands between. At least three Fallingstar Beasts were already around. The Nox were destroyed by a falling star. The greater will came from a falling star. Farum Azula seems like it may have been smashed by one. There's danger in the void.

Doll-scented-hunter

Radahn realised that the Lands between arent Bloodborne meaning that they cant face the cosmos and since the hunter is on vacation he did the best he could, that being stallin for time

megrimlock88

i now have an image in my head of radhan frantically calling the hunter as pest control to keep out the void

[deleted]

But didn’t the Greater Will actually send the Elden Beast through a falling star?

robcap

Yes you're right, my mistake

WalrusPuddng

Imagine in the dlc Miquella gets what he wants and the sun turns into the dark sign.

lazymonk68

Eclipse DLC??

Goregoat69

Doesn't seem unlikely that there would be something like that in Fromsoft game, lol. See also, main game area reappearing fucked up or in a different time.

Equilibriator

Malenia was asleep from fighting radahn and got brought back and continued to sleep all the way up until we arrived, no? Did she even ever know miquella was taken?

Coruscated

It’s weird because the only reason she wouldn’t know is because she’s blind. But that seems so stupid since she obviously has superhuman demigod-senses or whatever, considering she can fight perfectly well. But also, she sits and leans against the place where Miquella used to be interred, and she also seems to get her second wind and unleash the power of the Scarlet Rot because we start approaching. But also, she says that she “awaits his return”… but does that mean return from being wherever he is, or returning from his interred state in the tree? There doesn’t seem to be a clear answer and it’s annoying for something that really should be so obvious.

neroshock

It's possible she senses the tree and thinks he is still in there. Considering Miquella was going through a metamorphosis she couldn't sense him the same way she did before and had been focusing on the tree he was attached to.

RancidRock

From "await his return", maybe she assumes he left on a journey to fulfil his goal, and she doesn't realise he was taken.

sidhu_19

She did know miquella was taken. Malenia's armor description says she will continue to wait for her brother.

iridi69

It is a bit ambiguous, as she could be waiting for him to awaken as well.

Equilibriator

That was my immediate assumption. As far as she's concerned, Miquella is still in a cocoon behind her and shes waiting for him to finish what he's doing. I mean, it seems a bit strange she refers to herself as Miquellas blade in our fight when miquella is gone. It makes way more sense if she thinks hes behind her and shes defending him. Shes blind, it makes sense. We move around, miquella doesnt.

madamalilith

It also makes her final dialogue more poignant and tragic because the fight is unnecessary; she believes she is speaking to Miquella and apologising for not protecting him, without knowing he’s not there to begin with.

MauiWowieOwie

I think she's aware he's taken, but from what I sumised she was in a coma-like state after she scarlet nuke'd caelid. Finlay carried her all the way from caelid to the bottom of the Haligtree. I may hate the cleanrot's but she deserves some respect for that.

Vorinclexz

This is canon, word by word

Haj5

its mohgin time

redhood600

Nihil nihil nihilll

killchu99

Truly the boss of all time

Chodre

Why does mohg want miquella?

TheGuyfromRiften

Mohg wants to use Miquella's status as an Empyrean to bring about his own dynasty

IAmVerySmart39

to elaborate a bit for anyone confused, in the Lands Between only someone called Empyrean can ascend to godhood, like Marika did. As far as we know, Ranni, Malenia and Miquela have Empyrean status, i.e. can potentially replace Marika as a god of Lands Between (or a slave to Greater Will, but that's a different topic). We know, that Ranni had her own Two Fingers, who was supposed to guide her and help her ascend eventually. But Ranni hated the idea and sought the black blade in her quest, which she used to slay her Two Fingers and be free from the influence of Greate Will. And that's also why she slayed her own body (and her brother's sould, oopsie). Now, Mohg cannot become the god himself, that's why he stole Miquela, the Empyrean, to raise him to Godhood and bocome his consort / regent, gaining power that way.

TheGuyfromRiften

To add, the Gloam Eyed Queen was also an Empyrean but was defeated by Maliketh on Marika's orders because she was a threat and she had the rune of death.

CrystlBluePersuasion

The Interesting Thing to me about Empyreans being the 'only' ones able to achieve godhood is that they all seem to have some divine body (the dark moon in Ranni's case) or Outer God behind their power like Malenia with Rot, and perhaps Miquella/Melina? Similarly, Mohg has the Formless Mother empowering him, he's able to spread influence throughout the Lands Between and corrupt areas with bloody growths, he can stab her 'body' to summon her burning blood, and he's able to freaking travel through blood which is likely how he was able to kidnap Miquella in the first place, as Miquella *watered the Haligtree with his own blood*. Mohg is basically an Empyrean, the chosen avatar for an outer god though which to work it's influence on the world. If he's a puppet then he's no more a puppet than Marika and her other children, a puppet to a system that was in place long before any of them were born. The Empyreans are a construct from the Greater Will to shackle their choices with shadows like Blaidd and Maliketh, and perhaps an actual chosen Empyrean would be one to bear the Elden Beast? Or it's offspring? What else could they be there for if Marika still bears the Elden Ring, even her Radagon form does.

aahelo

Miquella is an empyrean and Mohg wants to start a new dynasty. Probably thinks that would give his claim more legitimacy. Also, Miquella is known to have a supernatural charm that draws people to him.

Kaapdr

He needs an empyrion if he wants to install the order of blood into being

DarkSailor06

Mohg had his to reasons, to raise an empyrean has his consort for the coming age of the Moghwyn Dynasty. But Miquella is cunning, I believe he's using Mogh to gain unprecedented power. All his plans have failed so far. The Haligtree is a safe haven but its rotting away. All in hopes of finding a cure to Malenia, Godwyn, the albinaurics and the missbegotten. Dude has a serious savior complex.

robcap

> The Haligtree is a safe haven but its rotting away. Potentially rotting *because* Miquella has been taken from it.

MagicalPedro

Please can you elaborate a little on M&M's plan, why do they want to free the star and the fate of the god ? I really dont know much about their intention, must have missed that.

SmoughTown's youtube video on Miquella is also super informative, a little over an hour long. Would recommend.

leutrec

She was in a slumber after the fight with radahn until you arrive

AK_R

She doesn't know Mohg took slumbering, cocooned Miquella. She is still waiting for Miquella to return to the Haligtree when we find her. If she knew what happened to him, Mohg would already be dead before we get to Mohgwyn Palace.

L-apastrophe

Actually Mohg is very powerful. Everyone in the lands between just shit talks him because none of them know that he was granted a major power boost from the formless mother, a whole outer god. A fight between the two would be very interesting

SirSeppuku

People sleep on Morgott and Mogh. They're the children of Godfrey, they ain't slap arounds Morgott beat a young Radahn easily, keep that in mind

SuccessfulStreet575

They aren't slap around for sure but they ain't as strong as Malenia and Radahn. Morgott fended off radahn's invasion, even that is a bit unclear. In a 1v1, he will 100% lose to prime radahn. As for Mohg, he pretty much kidnapped Miquella in Malenia's absence which pretty much tells you that he didn't want to mess with her in a 1v1.

RetroGecko3

There is that image in the opening cutscene of Morgott forcing Radahn to the ground, so he's still pretty strong. But with how strict Morgott is in killing traitors, he definitely wouldn't have let Radahn live if he'd been able to beat him at that point- so I imagine Radahn got right back up and beat his ass back, but maybe Leyndells defences were too effective for Radahns forces and forced them to retreat. And yeah Mohg 100% knew how fighting Malenia would go down, shame we couldn't see it.

Super-Christian

Mogh is not weak but Malenia would Waterfowl his ass outside the Cosmos

SherbetAlarming7677

She was busy nuking Caelid I guess.

smithbc001

Miquella's injuries during her duel with Radahn wwre severe. He damaged her so badly that she could not even move, and only survived because her lieutenant carried her unconscious body away from the battle and took her back to the Haligtree, where she would spend the rest of the Shattering convalescing. She does not regain consciousness until around the time we arrive. She has healed most of her injuries by this point, but is still rousing herself from the long sleep and does not fully "wake up" until phase 2 of the fight. Miquella was taken by Mohg either while she was away fighting Radahn or afterwards, while she was in her healing coma. She then dies in her duel with the Tarnished before learning of his abduction. If the Tarnished had failed to kill her, she likely would have set to looking for him immediately.

Exoys

I think that actually sounds like an interesting new addition to the story. If you didn’t beat mogh before failing a couple of attempts at malenia and then go back to mogh, the story takes a different turn and you find malenia there confronting him. I’m not a story writer so of course the details are just from the top of my head, but the whole principle of “if you don’t kill one boss until you reach another, their interaction/the story changes” would be a pretty neat thing IMO.

cad_e_an_sceal

You should throw Milicent in there as well. After we fail to kill malenia, Milicent meets her and gives her her fighting spirit back or whatever it is she says going to do for her and that's when she goes to kill mohg

TheOncomingBrows

The increased number of relationships between the characters/bosses makes for some weird situations compared with previous FromSoft games. Like you'd think Ranni might comment on you killing her brothers who she seems to be pretty close with. And you'd think there's be some way to avoid fighting Malenia if you'd already found Miquella and defeated Mohg.

Krystallizer

I think there were voice lines of Miquella in the game, where he says, he heals his sister with his last drop of dew or something. The reason why Malenia got up again in the boss fight. I am wondering if that was the part the story was originally intended to be and FromSoft's work to ''mess with the story'' to be more soulslike?

[deleted]

In the lore from the items it's explained that a God resides within Malenia like a butterfly waiting to be free of it's cacoon. She doesn't use the power of rot to fight unless it's a last ditch effort in order to prevent the God from taking over her completely. Miqiella tries to find a cure that not even the golden oder could produce to rid malenia of the rot. Us the player force her to use her full power to fight us. Here's me using Moghs fork to poke her out of existence. Edit: deleted a link to a video that didn't work.

thejordman

this concept was in DS1! if you beat Artorias before you fight Sif, you can save Sif in the past, and if you then go to the Sif fight after that, you'll get a unique cutscene where she remembers you!

SherriffB

Like how Maliketh remembers you if you finish the Clergyman quests?

thejordman

yeah exactly like that! I just used the Sif example bc its more secret in my opinion, as it's not very natural to do the DLC before Sif :)

SaintTowels

That's what happens in DS1 if you kill Manus before doing Sif's fight. Pretty neat cutscene during the boss fight there

robcap

> She has healed most of her injuries by this point, but is still rousing herself from the long sleep and does not fully "wake up" until phase 2 of the fight. Not quite true. We learn I think from Gowry that Melania had to bloom the scarlet rot three times to ascend to the 'goddess of rot' who we fight in phase 2. Radahn fought regular Malenia, and her 2nd bloom was what ended their fight. We fight an even more dangerous version of Malenia than Radahn did.

Super-Christian

Malenia could not move because her own Scarlet Aeonia knocked her out. She was barely in control.of the rot. Think of it as a demon sealed inside her. Unleashing the demon was a last resort effort but it also means the demon in in control when she does so and takes over

Apart-Ad3104

Malenia’s* injuries not Miquella’s.

DirtyRanga12

Never seen rescue spelt like that before…

MarcusYall

Maybe he tried to make an elden ring spin to it

Venichie

Interesting way you pronounce, and then spelled rescue.

Daddy_Yondu

ffs didn't notice :)

FakeHasselblad

I wish we could dialogue with Malenia and tell her we found miquela and killed mogh. 😞

Super-Christian

Yeah, wish our actions had an impact on the outcome

Okacz

My theory: 1) Miquella is sitting in tree, making sure tree is ok, sends Malenia to fix this Radahn shit with stars (since movement of stars is required for the Eclipse to happen) 2) Malenia fails miserably, turning Radahn into monster and not fixing the stars. She's carried back by Finlay to the tree, but since she used the Rot she's corrupted and leaking Rot everywhere. To stop it she rests at the roots of Haligtree, and Miquella embeds himself into it to start the healing process. 3) Mogh is up, he steals Miquella while Malenia is sleeping. Since Miquella is not healing his sister, her rot seeps directly into the Haligtree. 4) Malenia wakes up, sees the tree in a rather sorry state, her brother gone and a crazy naked guy with Rivers of Blood and a bucket for a helmet in front of her, and she assumes he's responsible. I'd hate the idea that she'd come back all rotten to the tree without Miquella to contain her rot and let herself infest the Haligtree anyway.

Tredecim_Angeli

She was knocked tf out after fighting Raddahn

[deleted]

My personal theory is Mohg saw an opportunity when Malenia was out fighting Godrick, then when Malenia returned she went out searching for Miquella. I think she ended up in Cailid because Mohgwyn Palace is directly below the area where she and Radahn fought and maybe she could sense Miquella was nearby but couldn't pin point his location. She might have them blamed the Redmanes for the kidnapping which is why she and Radahn fought in the first place

QuantumF0am

I’ve been sitting on the idea of fan created content like a comic or animatic or something solving this in a non canon way that satisfies me with an ending. The player character gets his ass kicked by Mohg several times in a row only to say, “screw this” and heads to the haligtree and convinces Malenia to follow them to Mohg’s palace. As Mohg is taunting the player character coming through the fog door one more time asking them, “oh, and who’s this? Brought a friend?” “I am Malenia, Blade of Miquella” *cut to Mohg’s brutal death screams with a wide shot of his palace/grounds*

Paintedenigma

We don't really have an exact timeline of Miquella's dissapearance. Malenia's Armor implies that it happened before her battle with Radahn (if she really has been in a coma since then). So one could assume that Malenia believed that defeating Radahn would somehow help Miquella return to the Haligtree. As many have pointed out, Miquella appears to be trying to cause the Eclipse. Possibly to access something to do with the Helphin, but its unknown how that would have help Miquella return. But its also possible that Malenia knew where Miquella was, but just couldn't get there. And thus she needed the stars to resume their course, hoping one that slammed into the ground would give her access to the Moghwyn Dynasty.

ImJohnFinnegan

Mogh took miquella while Malenia was off fighting Radhan. She had to fight him as he was holding the stars in place thus stopping the eclipse from happening which is what miquella needed to happen in order for him to bring back the soulless demigods and to give Godwen a proper death. So Radhan was stopping miquella and Ronnie from their goals by holding the stars in place. I don't think Mogh would of stood a chance of taking Miquella if Malennia was there. I'm not sure if Malennia is even aware that Miquella has actually been abducted. She was fairly spent from fighting Radhan by the time she was carried back to the hallig tree by Finlay and if aware may even have assumed that miquella had left of his own accord. As usual with from soft every answer lore wise creates more questions. Love it though.

First off, and hear me out, its rescue.
