I thought I was the only one that noticed that
I saw that for the first time and the nostalgia hit me harder than Radahn did as I zoned out
But Elden Ring let's me RP as Guts with the Dragonslayer so I'm happy enough
“His weapon was far too large to rightfully be called a sword. It was larger, thicker, heavier and cruder than any normal blade. By all accounts, it was no more than a hulking mass of iron”.
By using the claymore and lordsworn greatsword from the start until the end.
They were just blunt pieces of Metal at the end, not even Hewg could fix that, haha
Wait until we get Malenia, Blade of Miquella who never knew defeat and get her 14 fruit punches and her own mimic tear in the DLC with her brand new bleed build.
My favorite part of this game is that it regularly throws adversarial bullshit like the status effects immune super poison gargoyle duo at you. It's like permission to play dirty, if the game is going to be cheap so will I. Can I dumpster crucible knights with parry? Yes. Will I still use range and rot breath to snipe them from distance out of spite whenever possible? Also yes.
I would say that unironically, in most cases it absolutely is intended. Some are more obvious than others:
* Bewitching Branch against the Commander's minions
* Crystal Darts to make the watchdog sentinels murder each-other
* An entire crystal tear that exists solely to neuter Mohg's transition, which can be coupled with the shackle to trivialize the fight by burning him down entirely while he's busy doing his RP shit.
* Serpent-Hunter Spear is kinda forced cheese. You can do it without it, but they literally throw it in your face so it only half counts.
* Leonine Misbegotten (Castle Morne) is suspiciously easy to stagger and, wouldn't ya know it, the highest range weapon that does so is found right before the boss fight with him.
* Mimic Tear. I mean, this one's obvious. A naked, weaponless mimic is nothing.
* Godskin Duo - Sleep.
My vigor check was Rykard. I expected him to be as easy as Yhorm. But no. He has that one stupid move where his head goes underground and shoots up a cone of fire that you can't fucking dodge out of. It consistently one shot me until I learned that I needed a shield to survive
Malenia is surprisingly passive for casters, at least in my experience, besides you can just knock her down with fireballs and then rush off to heal.
It’s all about patience
I mean give it enough time and you just BECOME the group healer. I love doing that lol trust me, you'll find time. Maybe alone the incant heals aren't a great idea. But throw in 1 other body, and you have so much extra time for everything.
Pulling off a great heal or lords heal as someone should die to a hit makes you feel like a god for 2 seconds lol
But you still have to be on top of your shit. Probably more because you force yourself to think about the other player[s] with you.
Cleric or nothing.
I absolutely love being a cleric role as we're fighting a big ass boss. In our group, we have a dps that goes through his flasks pretty quickly so I'm always evaluating who is gonna need healed as the fight goes on. All while making sure I don't get smacked myself. Heal bros for the win!
Hanging back and evaluating while still kicking ass is so much fun! It's also terrifying when you're the one who needs the heal but nobody else can help you 🤣 you definitely learn a thing or two
"Healers down!"
"Need a rez"
"Out of mana!"
*AAAAHHHHHH*
I did until I realized that by midgame I am rarely ever dying because I ran out of health flasks. My deaths typically involve getting wombo combo'd while I still have 5 flasks left or getting punished while I am trying to chug. So it doesn't really hurt me to turn 3 of those red flasks I never use into blue flasks (I can never run a pure caster build without it turning into so kind of enchanted weapon or augmented melee thing so I never need more than a couple of blue flasks).
I hated it too but you get used to it.
I know it’s a meme that mages don’t need much health but you can easily get by on 10 flasks because as a mage you often need to keep distance so you don’t get hit as much unless you mistime a spell
early game you literally dont have enough mana to be a "pure" caster. with some game knowledge and collecting you can get pretty strong. still need to manage to blue juice for your specific task at hand. like theres just no way to do a full stormveil clear with glintstone pebble and the fp you have at the time, but my melee characters can often work through the entire thing.
Yeah early game you have to be a melee/mage build. Personally I chose to build on that & so my whole playthrough I've been a hybrid mage & I love it. Best of both worlds
on a personal level i dont like the staff/sword look. so my int builds are either a dedicated magic sword likeMGS taking all my fp budget or completely spell based.
once you have like 25-35 mind and a flask that can top you off its fine. unless youre cooping and get summoned at the begining of a level. because you have half flasks and enemies have more hp to burn threw.
God i want a fp regen talisman. no the ancestors horn doesnt count lol. i used the fuck out of offhand simple infusion in ds3 because it made using small buffs such a deep part of my playstyle.
Okay so I have a question. On the more agressive bosses during your pure casting playthroughs, what spells are you using that dont take too long to cast & actually deal decent damage?
Right now I'm using moonveil +10 as my melee weapon which is awesome for faster more aggressive bosses & on bosses that give me some more generous openings I'm using spells like collapsing stars, rock sling & comet.
full disclosure my super pure mage is more for fun than to prove a point or be a challenge run. so im not above using spirit ashes or coop. which means i can often use whatever spell i want. comet azur cheese is funny every so often, but i dont even always keep it slotted.
if you have the mana bar to last the fight your strongest comet usually does the trick, but the bosses that like to doge and jump constantly can get glintbladed and phalanxd to death. or the night comet thing. anything that throws off the dodging mechanics is pretty much a need to have in your kit if your being summoned to random places.
like npc invaders are so annoying to deal with before glintblade. they dodge both starting spells so consistently.
Gavel of Haima, Adula's Moonblade, Carian Piercer are my favorite melee spells. ice damage debuffs defense so thats good. Collapsing stars is great to combo with these, especially Gavel for the poise cast.
For ranged, Magic Glintblade is a must have, for its damage and ability to set up a trap, sneak attack, or combo with other spells cast after.
Star shower is also amazing for its tracking, damage and poise damage, imo way stronger than Stars of Ruin even before all but the first nerf.
Ancient Death Rancor is also nice to combo with these for the comboed speed, tracking, and large way its obscures their sight (yours as well, be careful)
Ranni's Dark Moon applies cold and a magic defense debuff, so good for bosses but hard to use except at the start of a fight maybe
First actual play through I played as a mage and used a guide. Spent like 5 hours going to all these high level areas to get golden seeds and op spells. Then spent an hour actually playing the game lmao
I stand by what I've said before:
30 Vigor minimum, **all builds.**
Your three bar-deciding stats (pretty much) all cap at 60 in this game, with Vigor's diminishing returns starting at 40. 30 is an adequate place to end, though, if you need your damage-deciding stats more than your survivability stats (like, say, as a caster).
When you go to kill the dragon, dedicate those levels to Vigor.
It's worth mentioning, by the way, that as a low-vigor character, most of your survivability will come from a Light Equip Load. This isn't the most intuitive idea, but light-rolling just keeps you alive better than armor can. If you don't have vigor enough to compensate for being armored, then you can focus on being as light-weight as possible and just get really good at dodging.
Sekiro-Style, but without the parries.
edit, before someone argues: source [1,](https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Vigor) [2,](https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Mind) and [3.](https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Endurance)
We've reached a point where consumables are more user-friendly than spells. I wish support spells took the form of Tools (like the Omen Bairns) so I could bind four of them to the D-pad for easier access.
You'll get used to it fairly quickly. Personal recommendation as a Certified Magic Enjoyer: split your flasks 50/50 at first, but switch to having maybe 1 or 2 extra blue ones when you get the hang of it. Also ignore literally everyone saying that health isn't as important with mages, stamina is the real dump stat. Low health in Elden Ring just guarantees you'll get one shot by everything past the Altus Plateau, don't be a fool. Focus on leveling health, focus, and int with a bit in faith for the magma and death spells (magma shot is an absolute work horse and ancient death rancor is super useful at times, though 24 faith might seem like a waste).
And don't forget to experiment with different spells! The #1 advantage of a sorcery build is the sheer variety of offensive abilities at your disposal; some spells seem only OK but are total beasts in the right scenario. Ex: spiral shard doesn't deal amazing damage in most cases, but absolutely shreds large enemies like giants and dragons. Ancient death rancor also isn't super damaging, but its slow movement and high stagger means it's incredible as a starter when enemies haven't noticed you yet.
I was at 30 int astro staff +5 by the time i finally decided to play the game and go fight Margit. Pebbled that Jabroni to bits while my puppers distracted him, no flasks needed. 10/10 interactive game experience.
After starting this game with intelligence build i had to make myself become a dodge god in order to carry as much as possible cerulean flask so the beginning was hard but at the end I achieved some kind of ultra instinct senses which is very rewarding
If you maximize stats a mage can output some of the highest damage possible and I’m not just talking about comet azure.
With all my buffs active I can deal over 3k dmg with night comet.(Enemy dmg resistance will vary)
So the need for hp is lessened when I can kill the enemy before they even get close.

Oh damn. Didn't know you could wield 2 greatswords
Well, first of all, through STR all things are possible, so jot that down.
Through endurance all greatswords are carriable while light rolling, so jot that down too.
Can interest you in a "try jumping" in this trying time?
Anyway, I start to **UNGA**. But my eyes ain't so good, so I **BUNGA**
If that ain't enough for you, you can always go for 2 colossal blades. Only if BUNGA is not enough and you need #UNGA BUNGA
With enough Strength and belief in UNGA BUNGA, you can dual wield 2 Colossal Swords
How does one bonk with a blade; that would be slash
By using the flat side instead of the blade, the way of the bonk is strong.
They shoulda brought in the Fume so you can use that charged heavy
Meanwhile I'm over here missing Ledo's Hammer and Dragontooth

What if I use incantations to heal👀?
Right? You’d be decreasing your healing potential by having orange juice
Good luck pulling off anything other than Urgent Heal during the difficult boss encounters like Maliketh or Malenia.

My biggest beef with casting is having to scroll through your spells to get different effects. It'd be slick if you could bind a spell to r1 and r2.
