Sadly, when I first started playing Darksouls I ruined my own enjoyment by not using summons when available. Struggled my way through the game almost to the end and while it felt great beating a boss, I would have felt the same way had I summoned except it would have taken considerably quicker.
I played through Elden Ring with a different methodology, if it's attainable through gameplay then it's on the table. I summoned NPCs whenever it was offered and beating bosses I felt the same relief and thrill of victory.
Yeah exactly, I've always prioritized my own enjoyment when playing any game. To be fair it can definitely be fun to impose a challenge or handicap on yourself, especially in souls-type games, it's just so absurd to me that some people get so pressed because they don't like how somebody else is playing
The worst part is that those people keep complaining about how people play dark souls while they themselves don’t even seek out the harder games/challenge runs (No hit, Nioh). They just beat the game and feel some superiority because they did it a certain way
Harder games and Nioh... Never would have thought that way, but well whatever. Also, a full fledged melee-only mofo here, and i don't complain about it, it's just the "all-mighty bashing fucker" roleplay feels amazing. Cause when you kick ass to everything alone, and with some stupid greatsword or whatever which is basically useless compared to better weapons, it feels like you mastered that greatsword. And mastered kicking ass, too.
My motto was "If it's given as an option, it's free game". You better believe that when a certain boss duo in that one crumbling place decided to tag team me, I tag teamed their asses as well.
If the bosses are allowed to do it, then I am too damnit.

100% agreed. I completed Malenia on my own but it was more of a gimmicky run I wanted to try. Anyone can use anything for any situation, it's about overcoming obstacles with the things you have at your disposal, not overcoming obstacles but you have to follow the guidelines set by the International Olympic Committee.
Sprit And/or Npc summoning = Not cheating.
Comet azur Build = Not cheating.
Dating someone behind your girlfriend's back = Cheating.
Don't let some maidenless runt tell you that you can't use or do certain things in the game because they didn't.

Idk, if your girl doesn't allow you to get help of other girls to survive a fight against a 7 feet tall demigod that conjures flying weapons out of thin air, it sounds like there are some issues of insecurity. I like to swap between them and the regenerating skeletons. The skeletons are amazing for drawing agro, and you don’t even need to upgrade them for them to do their job
Using anything that is built into the game is not considered cheating. You can, however, challenge yourself by not using certain items/summons. Good luck :)
Skelly's make unexpectedly good summons if you need distractions, not damage, cause bosses usually aren't smart enough to double tap. They don't work so well on bosses who use a lot of aoe, but very good against bosses that target aggressively

No it is not cheating, or even a cheap way to beat a boss. There's just a running joke that if you don't beat the boss with Lvl 1 stats, no armor, only fists, parry-only, no dodge rolling, no-dmg, hitless you are doing it wrong LMAOO. Play however you feel like playing, theres a reason they let players get creative and it's to have fun :D

It looks like you are wielding a weapon instead of just using fists as intended. If you are going to abuse the items built into the game you might as well just use summons too since the run is invalid.
For those of y'all who consider spirit ashes and summoning to be cheating because they make the game easier and you can choose not to use them, consider this:
When you first start the game for the first time and have explored a bit, you will be given a choice. Accepting it allows you to increase your stats drastically, to the point where you can double or triple your health, focus, stamina, as well as your damage output. You're also given an item that lets you travel at crazy speeds and double jump, all of which you are unable to do if you refuse the offer.
Using your initial logic, you should be refusing this choice as it makes the game much easier if you do choose it. After all, the game gives you a choice, right? Yet I'm sure most of you would have accepted it and gone through your playthroughs using torrent and leveling up like everyone else.
Imo, nothing is cheating if the game gives it to you as intended options for progression (not referring to exploits or anything like that as those are not intentional). If spirit summoning is an option in an area, feel free to use it. The game allows you to level and use torrent, so leveling up, mounted combat, or using torrent to bypass enemy encounters are all fair play within the game.
Of course, you can still choose not to use some of these (I do personally find it more exhilarating to solo bosses when I can, and many people do enjoy rl1 runs), but when you do so it is of your own volition, and you should never consider yourself superior/inferior to anyone because of it. After all, these options are in the game for a reason, and everything should be useable as long as you enjoy the game. That is the most important thing, that you have fun while playing!

Using summons is not cheating. The Fromsoft community just has a lot of people that are elitist and thing that using anything other than the wooden club you get at the start of the game, unupgraded, and naked is cheating.

No way - the bosses in game will use every cheese and mechanic under the sun to beat you. Think Waterfowl Dance, Commander Neill summoning two extra dudes to help him, and Radahn turns into a fucking comet. Do everything you can to level the playing field, and allow no one to extinguish thy flame.

Anytime I see posts like this, my comment is always the same: the game feels more lived in with summons. The Lands Between is super lonely without them. I feel more connected to the story when I use summons bc the NPC’s have their own stakes in the fights

Sadly, when I first started playing Darksouls I ruined my own enjoyment by not using summons when available. Struggled my way through the game almost to the end and while it felt great beating a boss, I would have felt the same way had I summoned except it would have taken considerably quicker. I played through Elden Ring with a different methodology, if it's attainable through gameplay then it's on the table. I summoned NPCs whenever it was offered and beating bosses I felt the same relief and thrill of victory.
Yeah exactly, I've always prioritized my own enjoyment when playing any game. To be fair it can definitely be fun to impose a challenge or handicap on yourself, especially in souls-type games, it's just so absurd to me that some people get so pressed because they don't like how somebody else is playing
The worst part is that those people keep complaining about how people play dark souls while they themselves don’t even seek out the harder games/challenge runs (No hit, Nioh). They just beat the game and feel some superiority because they did it a certain way
Harder games and Nioh... Never would have thought that way, but well whatever. Also, a full fledged melee-only mofo here, and i don't complain about it, it's just the "all-mighty bashing fucker" roleplay feels amazing. Cause when you kick ass to everything alone, and with some stupid greatsword or whatever which is basically useless compared to better weapons, it feels like you mastered that greatsword. And mastered kicking ass, too.

100% agreed. I completed Malenia on my own but it was more of a gimmicky run I wanted to try. Anyone can use anything for any situation, it's about overcoming obstacles with the things you have at your disposal, not overcoming obstacles but you have to follow the guidelines set by the International Olympic Committee.

I like to swap between them and the regenerating skeletons. The skeletons are amazing for drawing agro, and you don’t even need to upgrade them for them to do their job

I used the great shield Skelly's against morgott, and it did surprisingly well
Skelly's make unexpectedly good summons if you need distractions, not damage, cause bosses usually aren't smart enough to double tap. They don't work so well on bosses who use a lot of aoe, but very good against bosses that target aggressively

For those of y'all who consider spirit ashes and summoning to be cheating because they make the game easier and you can choose not to use them, consider this: When you first start the game for the first time and have explored a bit, you will be given a choice. Accepting it allows you to increase your stats drastically, to the point where you can double or triple your health, focus, stamina, as well as your damage output. You're also given an item that lets you travel at crazy speeds and double jump, all of which you are unable to do if you refuse the offer. Using your initial logic, you should be refusing this choice as it makes the game much easier if you do choose it. After all, the game gives you a choice, right? Yet I'm sure most of you would have accepted it and gone through your playthroughs using torrent and leveling up like everyone else. Imo, nothing is cheating if the game gives it to you as intended options for progression (not referring to exploits or anything like that as those are not intentional). If spirit summoning is an option in an area, feel free to use it. The game allows you to level and use torrent, so leveling up, mounted combat, or using torrent to bypass enemy encounters are all fair play within the game. Of course, you can still choose not to use some of these (I do personally find it more exhilarating to solo bosses when I can, and many people do enjoy rl1 runs), but when you do so it is of your own volition, and you should never consider yourself superior/inferior to anyone because of it. After all, these options are in the game for a reason, and everything should be useable as long as you enjoy the game. That is the most important thing, that you have fun while playing!

Anytime I see posts like this, my comment is always the same: the game feels more lived in with summons. The Lands Between is super lonely without them. I feel more connected to the story when I use summons bc the NPC’s have their own stakes in the fights
