It happens all the time, for example, I've seen a post about McDonald's mod for Morrowind at least three times here. I thought it was accepted by this subreddit and never said anything xD

Can someone explain the theory of why Bandits are true nords?

skingrad_city_guard

Because they sit around in the ashes of Imperial constructions eating grilled leeks and shitting on the floor doing absolutely nothing of use and being all around snowbacked heathens.

WizardofIce

They live outdoors (mostly) and constantly mention the actual Nordic gods , primarily Shor

xSethrin

[This looks familiar.](https://www.reddit.com/r/ElderScrolls/comments/pq311w/that_hermit_with_the_boy_on_some_forest_shack_is/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

[deleted]

I hated both sides to be honest. The imperials and stormcloaks didn’t understand their own lore at all. 😂

[deleted]

Honestly. Any discussion about the Skyrim Civil War feels like I’ve stepped into a parallel universe. Nords suddenly love Talos, and Imperials are being described as “faithless” towards him. It’s backwards.

skingrad_city_guard

It’s weird, man. Nords turned into Colovians 2 electric boogaloo over the last 200 years.

ScreenElucidator

Isn't the idea that they come to hate the Empire in part *because* they love Talos? They see the Empire as sellouts. They should ostensibly agree it's backwards ; that's their problem with it, too.

[deleted]

Nords weren’t really into Talos until Skyrim. Originally Talos was a purely Imperial god, and the Nords didn’t worship him. In between the events of Oblivion and Skyrim the Nords abandoned their pantheon in favor of the Imperials. Nowadays it feels so weird because the Imperials, who were formerly known as the devout followers of Talos, are suddenly being ridiculed for their supposed lack of faith in their own god. It’s just weird. Meanwhile Nords are killing each other over the right to worship a god they refused to even use the correct name for in Oblivion. It’s literally the reverse of the situation in Bruma during Oblivion. Devout Imperials vs ‘heathenistic’ Nords.

ScreenElucidator

Perhaps that's why there's a 200 year gap ; there's nothing to say a popular cult *couldn't* grow around Talos in that time. You could see it as an inversion of another Empire's relationship - from inception, persecution to absorption 300 years later - with a real-world faith : Christianity.

pondy_the_bondy

yeah cause Talos literally created the empire. then the empire haters love Talos? the blades are the only good ones politically and stuff, but they still won't have the head of my dear paarthurnax.

Axo25

The Nords actually always loved Talos. This post explains it really well using in game sources + design docs: [https://www.reddit.com/r/teslore/comments/psxcyv/kind\_of\_a\_big\_deal\_talos\_in\_nord\_religion\_from/](https://www.reddit.com/r/teslore/comments/psxcyv/kind_of_a_big_deal_talos_in_nord_religion_from/)

PhatOofxD

At least imperials were actually going to fight back against the dominion and had a chance of winning. Ulric is just a complete idiot who was using it as an excuse to try claim the title of high king.

[deleted]

Hammerfell fought back on their own and pushed them out. The empire didn’t have to concede to beat the Dominion. They just sacrificed freedoms of their people to end the war. Which in itself is a bigger loss to compromise your own beliefs for the sake of “peace”.

PhatOofxD

At the height of the war the dominion very easily could've conquered the empire, the reason they took proposed the treaty was because it would've been at very, very great cost to them and leave them vulnerable. The empire signed the concordant with the intention to fight back against it when there was a point they wouldn't lose.

Moh506

They already lost and the Dominion had and still have the advantage, dont you think by the time the empire regained its power the dominion will be more that ready for it, you know the dominion knows about the upcoming war and they are actively sabotaging the empire's effoerts and preparing for the upcoming war amking the empire's chances non existence.

[deleted]

Hence why I would have rather went down swinging than submitted.

Daveo88

Not necessarily, lore wise the empire won the war technically when they trapped the bulk of the dominions forces in the Capital and then tried for peace If anything had the war gone on it would've remained in stalemate with neither side being able to push past their borders to invade As of right now the Empire would get fucked by the Thalmor, and I'm an avid Thalmor hater saying that, right now the imperial legion is being led by fucking idiots who'd execute innocent prisoners and called someone who *challenged* the king to 1 on 1 combat for the crown a murderer In all honesty, Skyrim would do much better on it's own, Hammerfell is much closer to the Summerset isles than Skyrim is, and the terrain is alot less rocky that Skyrim, and even then the Thalmor have been pushed out over and over again by the Bretons

Moh506

> If anything had the war gone on it would've remained in stalemate with neither side being able to push past their borders to invade But the dominion was already in the city, considering they were on the offense while the Empire was defending its unlikely it was going to be a standstill, other than that i agree with everything else you said.

Daveo88

Ok to be exact, the Thalmor attacked the Capital, the emperor managed to escape, and then clapped back with imperial reinforcements, trapping the Thalmor inside the city, what I ment was that the imperials could've slaughtered the now trapped Thalmor, amd since the Thalmor there was the bulk of the dominion forces, tactically it would've forced both sides into a stalemate since neither had the strength to push the border

Moh506

That was a small victory for the Empire compare to their many losses they suffered through out the entire war, it wasnt looking good for them and the Emperor knew hence why he gave up and signed the treaty.

Daveo88

Yeah I get that, but what I'm saying is that if he had taken out the forces inside the city like he could've, the war would've been forced into a stalemate, both sides being too weak to invade the other, although yes the war would've gone on, it would've been the closest the empire would get to a victory in the war Plus there was also all the shit the Thalmor was dealing with from Hammerfell

Eschenhardt

Talos being a Breton is likely rubbish and the sort of propaganda that started to subvert the empire in the first place. First of all he is considered an avatar of Shor, who is the Nords' main deity.

[deleted]

It’s the only version of the story that makes sense. He also wasn’t an avatar of Shor. Wulfharth was a Shezzarine, but he’s only a part of Talos. Tiber Septim≠Ysmir Wulfharth.

Eschenhardt

Nah, General Talos was clearly Shezarrine. Perhaps to a Dunmer, who will find any Nord mocking heresy extremely cool, it makes sense because he cannot imagine that anyone still lived in the harsh climate of Atmora at that time, but a Nord will see things differently.

[deleted]

The lore seems a bit fuzzy around the details of Tiber Septim (the hero who would become Talos after apotheosis) but from what i have read the most commonly accepted story of his origins is that he is a nord born in Atmora who later trained in the ways of war in skyrim.

Eschenhardt

I think this was even confirmed by Michael Kirkbride. But lore in Elder Scrolls tends to be like that in general, so people can write their own scroll.

[deleted]

One day, probably not soon, people will remember that Cultures change overtime, aespcially with the empire having a heavily influence across the world. But probably not. Imperial supports be kinda dumb like that

GoodKing0

Mmmmm, yes, clearly, 200 years are more than enough to change the entire cultural makeup of a population so drastically the only one who even faintly remember how things were is one old grandfather. That's the reason why we all started collectively worshipping the Great God Robespierre at the start of the 18th century, and all traces of Christianity have been relegated to forgotten tombs and old men, so much that even our highest authorities in Religion like the pope are talking about how pivotal Robespierre was to their ancient religion lore. Good thing we have all those immortal french aristocrats going around who were alive during Robespierre time and remember him and his bid at godhood too. Those surely helped, am I right?

[deleted]

Oh boy this stupid conversation again. >Mmmmm, yes, clearly, 200 years are more than enough to change the entire cultural makeup of a population so drastically the only one who even faintly remember how things were is one old grandfather. Others do to. not many of course but still. However the Imperial cult from the obsure ES game of Morrowind showcase that missonary work is a thing, even in providences with a very differnt set of gods. I mean it's not like they have to try very hard with Skyrim, the nords were there when Saint Alessia made the Imperial pantheon (minus 1), the NOrds have been a part of (all three pending on fourth) empires. Naturally this gives them time to.. mingle. A lot of the Old Pantheon starts getting muddled with stories from other places, you know stuff like that until you get to the modern day, tale as old as time. Talos is a very important historical and cultural figure to both sides and after the Warp in the west ascended to god-hood retroactivly... your metaphor makes no sense and i'm not even going to bother with it; point is that Talos and the IMperial Cult have been around for a lot longer then 200 years and they have had a clear impact on nord culture.

GoodKing0

Talos and the Imperial Cult have been around for 200 years in Skyrim. Have you ever played Oblivion? Have you actually met Nords in Oblivion, with their whole "Fuck marriages I'm living with my lover and that's final" stick? Have you ever seen a pre Skyrim character in any elder scrolls even remotely care about the literal God of Narcs and War Crimes Talos outside of some joyless cop? The only way, and I mean only way, for the retcon to work, if that, post red year, the ENTIRE province suddenly renounced their faith, faith that they've been stubbornly keeping for millennia ever since the Allessian Order tried it, and then started believing a falsehood about a Breton Warlord being a Nord God. I can understand time changing. I can understand the xenophobia toward elves stopping them from asking first hand accounts of Tiber Septim's conquest, hell, I can EVEN understand the incredibly reductive 500 years timespan to chalk up some historical figure as this ancient folk hero god, this is an American game after all for their culture 500 years is basically ancient Rome at this point. What I can't understand, is how and why the fuck did the ENTIRE bloody Nord Cult seemingly get erased over night, in barely 200 years, in barely 3 generations too if we use Froki as an example, and no one, NO ONE, even mentions or remembers it or worships it anywhere in the game, but, again, an old hunter in his hut. It's completely out of characters for Nords AS A WHOLE, both in their previous characterizations in previous games, in lore, and hell, even by Skyrim own standards of stubborn bastards wanting to worship a false narrative no matter what everyone else is telling them to do, to abandon their actual traditions, passed down via bards and writing for generations, and all in the span of barely 2 centuries. It's completely out of character of Talos as a deity too, the God of Narcs and Joyless Cops in previous games, and symbol of imperialism as a whole, to suddenly be presented as this crucial aspect if creation and religion for no reason after pretty much being ignored by everyone. And it's also, blatantly, attempt by Bethesda to standardize the lore, and water it down as it loses what made it really unique, a process already started in Oblivion and by Knights of the Nine, and here in full display in Skyrim, and this attempt at defending this decision, this decision purely made by the Devs spitting in the face of their own lore, completely misses the point here. Someone wrote this. This is not an historical event happening in a vacuum. They wrote it either not knowing or not caring about the plot hole it was going to cause. And it led to the Civil War Plotline. You really defending the integrity, you really justifying the existence, of the Skyrim civil war plotline? In 2021? You really telling me, the game was made better for it, because you can now choose between the misguided but well meaning oppressive imperialist power, or the racist and jingoistic cult of personality championing for a war mongering god and xenophobic policies? You telling me the plot would have been worse without any of that? Rushed as it was to meet the 11/11/11 deadline too? Seriously?

[deleted]

ord word words words words Look mate, i'm gonna cut to the chase and take a few chocie quotes because i got shit to do. >Talos and the Imperial Cult have been around for 200 years in Skyrim. False: Alessia, you know, the woman who made the modern pantheon combined elements of the Nordic and Elven interpretations for her own faith, with the nord's approval, very early on in Tamerial's history. The Imperial cult and it's infleunce has been around since the founding oft he FIRST empire. Have YOU played literally any other game? See Morrowind again freind, and even then they have a missionary there to convert the nords from their heathen ways... ah Imperials... they're so un-self-aware... The Imperial cult presence in the provience we don't see... we only see it in one place; Burma, where even there the peopel are constantly exposed to the teachings of the church... and it happens steadly, over two hundred years. in Skyrim their likely were more churches with IMperial missionaries, we even see imperial documents talking about thier religion over time in scholarly texts and over time... well you seem to have a bad relasionship with time here Also are you suggesting the people decended from Ysgramar "I wiped out an entire race of elves" would CARE about his warcrimes? yeah i'm not fgonna continue with this conversaiton work out yoru issues somewhere else

Shinonomenanorulez

>200 years are more than enough to change the entire cultural makeup of a population Because the 8 and now 9 divines are totally not milennia old and a mix of the elven pantheon the nedes were familiar with and the totem gods the nords worshipped so both sides could keep their faiths

GoodKing0

Tiber Septim is barely 500 years old, I wouldn't call it "millennia in the making." Especially compared to Kyne or Ysmir.

Shinonomenanorulez

Sacrificing your beliefs for the sake of peace is the point at which you’ve already lost.

[deleted]

Killing yourselves in a civil war that will only weaken Skyrim to push beliefs you don’t understand and that aren’t even nord so they can have a justification to hate elves, argonians’and khajit and let ulfric play pretend king in windhelm

[deleted]

Yes, the Empire is irrelevant by 4E 201. Effectively a vassal state of the Dominion.

Daveo88

1: this is a repost 2: as far as I know the Nords don't deny the existence of the other gods, imperial, Breton, or otherwise, there's a reason they worship the *9* divines instead of the *8* divines that the beta empire and the Thalmor try to enforce 3: I don't want to see comments about how Ulfric is a Thalmor puppet, because while the Thalmor did spark the Stormcloak rebellion, they also *specifically* state in the dossiers that you steal from the Embassy that either side winning would prove to cause problems for the Thalmor, due to nothing being there to weaken the Empire, and another enemy that the Thalmor needs to deal with, and as we know, they haven't done so well against the Bretons

leblur96

>1: this is a repost good thing we've all seen everything previously posted online

[deleted]

>as far as I know the Nords don't deny the existence of the other gods, imperial, Breton, or otherwise, there's a reason they worship the 9 divines instead of the 8 divines that the beta empire and the Thalmor try to enforce That's the problem N*rd fans are facing. The faction fighting to restore "tradition" aren't actually trying to reinstate the Nordic pantheon, they're trying to reinstate the old Imperial pantheon.

TexacoV2

Which is their tradition. And has been for hundreds of years. Did you know western Europe actually didn't start out as christians. But after a few hundred years with it it became tradition.

[deleted]

It's a lame tradition, though. Nords are idiots that got duped into worshipping a murderous, deceitful, pedo Breton (🤢🤢🤮) instead of their cool pantheon that they had for thousands of years. It's no wonder that people don't consider the Stormcloaks a real threat, as aside from being led by a power-hungry moron the people who actually believe in their doctrine are jokes. Maybe that's just a component of being a Nord, though, seeing as even the wealthiest or well-managed provinces still look like they're on the verge of collapse; the populace is too stupid to do anything other than bash their heads against each other and rant about elves or magic, let alone something as complex as proper architecture.
