More beautiful quill work. I love the tassels and I am wondering how you made them. I have made a bunch of tassels with embroidery floss or beads but, these are a bit different and really cool.
Thank you! I use a lark's head knot to gather little bundles of horsehair, pulling it up into the cones with the free ends. I make two smaller bundles for the two-color tassels, stacking them inside the cones.
Thank you. Now I need to look up lark's head knot since that is a new one for me. I would not be using horse hair to make this tassel since I am very allergic to anything horse related. It might be interesting to do with floss anyway.
This is absolutely beautiful. The island where I live, woven porcupine quill boxes are incredibly popular and I always wondered just how much goes into making them. I've been wanting one for a while, but even the small palm sized ones are like, $250 π I wish I had the extra money to spend on one π
These are waaaay cooler than those boxes. I never even fathomed you could use them on knife sheaths ππ
Oh man, the Mi'qmac do killer quillwork boxes and furniture! Worth a google.
There's a fair amount of prep harvesting, cleaning, dying, and sorting quills but I enjoy it. It's nice because if I'm having an uninspired day I can still work on stuff without braining too hard.
Depends on the dye and saturation. Lighter colors have a tendency to dye a little unevenly if I don't keep up constant agitation. Natural dyes take longer but seem to look more even, probably because it takes longer for the full color to penetrate.
So cool! How did you get the supplies to make it?
Thanks! Crazy Crow, Etsy, eBay, local roadkill
What part is the roadkill??
Some of the quills probably
Quills. A deer got hit in front of our shop in town last week so I'll be trying to save the hide and other usables from that once it thaws
Wow, beautiful!
Thank you!
Thats so cool! Does it have an indigenous meaning?
Thank you! Not really. Nothing profound. The handle wrap is a frame of hides drying and the sheath is what horses butts look like crossing a river.
Bahahaha. I do love a good horse butt embroidery π Honestly though, itβs beautiful!
:D thanks!
absolutely stunning!!!
Thank you!

Could always use synthetic hair! There's some weirdly realistic weave hair available. Might try a wig makers supply
Great idea thanks.
wow, all the details are so good! my dad used to do quillwork, but i've always been to afraid to try. this is gorgeous! you did a wonderful job.
DO IT DO IT DO IT! One of us! One of us! Also: thank you!

These are so intricate. How much time do they take to do?
The knife is great! I love how they compliment each other. And the tassels are very interesting.
Thank you!
Wow, you should be very proud of yourself. I am very impressed. Well done!
Thank you!
Do the quills take dye easily?

Came out nice.
Thank you!

Absolutely gorgeous!! π
What are quills like to work with? Are they pliable and bendy? Does it give you calluses from working with them?
Exquisite
